UNC is 1-5 on the year and 1-3 in the league following a loss at Syracuse last Saturday. Carolina rallied from a halftime deficit to lead late in regulation before the Orange forced overtime. After the teams traded touchdowns in the first extra period, SU prevailed on freshman Tommy DeVito's third TD pass of the day, a 4-yard strike to Ravian Pierce. Virginia is 5-2 and 3-1 in conference play after a win at Duke last weekend. Quarterback Bryce Perkins ran for two scores and threw for a third to move the Cavaliers into second place in the ACC Coastal. Saturday's game will be broadcast on Raycom Sports and locally on WRAL. 3 QUICK HITS QB Nathan Elliott established a new school record for pass attempts without an interception with 52 in the loss at Syracuse. Elliott finished one attempt shy of the overall program mark of 53 set by Kevin Anthony against LSU in His 34 completions rank third in UNC history behind Marquise Williams (38 vs. Georgia Tech in 2014) and Mitch Trubisky (35 vs. Pitt in 2016). DE Malik Carney was added to the Ted Hendricks Award Watch List following his performance at Cal. In just three games this season, the senior leads the team with 5.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss. The Hendricks Award honors the nation's top defensive end. The Tar Heel defense held Cal to 279 total yards in the season opener. That total marks the first time UNC has held an opponent under 300 yards since Stanford gained 283 yards in the 2016 Sun Bowl. The 279 yards were the fewest allowed since Virginia gained just 253 yards against the Tar Heels in After Dazz Newsome's 75-yard punt return touchdown at Syracuse, Carolina has 17 total kick and punt return touchdowns since the start of the Larry Fedora era in The Tar Heels were one of only five teams nationally to have multiple kick return touchdowns and over 1,000 kickoff return yards in Carolina returned the vast majority of its offensive playmakers from UNC scored 41 TDs a year ago and 36 of those are back in 2018, including Michael Carter, who led the team with nine scores. PK Freeman Jones, who led the roster with 64 total points, is also back. In total, 90 percent of the team s total offense - 4,003 of 4,435 yards - returns in Fedora sports a mark at Kenan Stadium during his career in Chapel Hill. His 25 home wins in his first five seasons were the most by any UNC coach in his first five seasons. Fedora-coached teams have been responsible for five of the top 10 offensive seasons in UNC history. Carolina has established more than 100 school single-season and career offensive records since In 2016, the Tar Heels established 36 individual records and six team records. Former UNC standout wide receiver Mack Hollins was part of the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl LII-winning team last season. Hollins became the 22nd different Tar Heel to win a Super Bowl, and those 22 winners have combined for a total of 29 rings won. SYRACUSE POSTGAME NOTES UNC played its first overtime game since the victory at Virginia Tech on Nov. 21, The game is only the third multiple-overtime game in Carolina history. Ironically, the first came against Syracuse during the 2003 season, a Orange victory in triple OT at Kenan Stadium. The other came against Tennessee in the 2010 Music City Bowl in Nashville, Tenn. The Tar Heels won over the Volunteers. QB Nathan Elliott finished the afternoon 34 of 52 for a career-best 321 yards and two touchdowns, setting career highs in both completions and attempts in the game. Sophomore WR Dazz Newsome scored his first career touchdown on a six-yard pass from Elliott on the game s opening drive. He caught a careerhigh seven balls for 90 yards. Newsome later added a 75-yard punt return for a touchdown midway into the third quarter, marking the first punt return TD by UNC since Ryan Switzer vs. Miami (78 yards) in Junior WR Anthony Ratliff-Williams hauled in a career-high nine receptions for 79 yards against the Orange. His previous high was five catches set multiple times in the 2017 campaign. Junior safety Myles Dorn made a career-high 14 tackles, including 10 solo tackles. RB Antonio Williams scored his team-leading fourth rushing touchdown of the season early in the third quarter. He later scampered for UNC s longest rush of the year for 56 yards in the fourth quarter. He registered the second 100-yard game of the season with a career-best 116 yards on 15 attempts. Nine different Tar Heel receivers caught a pass against the Orange, and six players ran the ball at least once. CARTER NAMED ACC RUNNING BACK OF THE WEEK Sophomore TB Michael Carter was named Atlantic Coast Conference Running Back of the Week after an outstanding performance in week 7 of the 2018 season. Carter rushed 18 times for a career-high 165 yards before a sold-out Kenan Stadium Saturday night against Virginia Tech. He averaged 9.2 yards per carry and caught two passes for 19 yards. The Navarre, Florida, product has gained 280 yards on 31 carries in 2018, averaging 8.6 yards per rush in three games. OFFENSIVE LINE AMONG NATION'S BEST IN PREVENTING SACKS Through six games, Carolina has allowed just eight total sacks, good for second in the ACC and tied for 17th nationally. Tackle William Sweet was honored as the ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week following the win over Pitt. Through six games, UNC has rushed for 5.1 yards per carry, third-best in the ACC behind only Clemson and Georgia Tech. VIRGINIA TECH POSTGAME NOTES Carolina gained a season-high 522 yards of total offense. The previous high was 486 yards in a win over Pittsburgh. TB Michael Carter went over 100 yards rushing for the third time in his career. The sophomore had a pair of 49-yard runs en route to a career-high 165 yards on 18 carries. He averaged 9.2 yards per play. Carolina rushed for a season-high 235 yards, its second straight-game going over 200 yards on the ground this season. UNC rushed for 215 yards at Miami in its previous game. Cade Fortin became the first true freshman to start at quarterback for the Tar Heels since Cam Sexton in Fortin finished 10-for-18 with 97 yards passing before exiting the game due to injury in the second quarter. QB Nathan Elliott connected with TE Carl Tucker for an 80-yard reception in the fourth quarter, the longest pass of Elliott s career and longest catch for Tucker, who finished the night with a career-high 123 receiving yards. His previous was 79 yards against Old Dominion in Tucker s 80-yard catch is the longest in UNC history by a Tar Heel tight end. The previous was 79 yards from Marquise Williams to Eric Ebron against Duke in Tucker gained more yards on that play than he had in any previous game in his career. Dazz Newsome returned three punts for a total of 51 yards. That surpassed the Tar Heels season total of 44 punt returns yards coming into the game. Carolina made nine tackles for losses, including four quarterback sacks (two each by Jason Strowbridge and Malik Carney). UNC also broke up five passes (two by Patrice Rene) and intercepted a pair (J.K. Britt and Rene). It marked the first multi-interception game by UNC since the Notre Dame game on The Tar Heels entered the evening with one interception on the season. Britt made a team-high 10 tackles.

4 PK Freeman Jones converted 4 of 6 field goal attempts. He tied his career high for made field goals in a game, set earlier this season at East Carolina. The six attempts also ties the UNC single-game record set by Clint Gwaltney (made 4) vs. Maryland in 1990 and Josh McGee (made 6) vs. Duke in MIAMI POSTGAME NOTES TB Michael Carter s first four carries of the game each went for a minimum of 13 yards and totaled 81 yards alone in the first quarter. QB Chazz Surratt, who missed the first three games of the season due to suspension, called his own number on his first drive of the year and scored on a 17-yard scamper in the first quarter. True freshman DB Trey Morrison registered his first career sack and had two TFLs. True freshman DB Bryson Richardson had UNC s first interception of the season in the third quarter. DE Malik Carney had two forced fumbles, two TFLs and a sack. The senior has 3.5 sacks in two games this season. ELLIOTT NAMED A MANNING STAR OF THE WEEK Nathan Elliott was named one of eight quarterbacks named by The Manning Award as its "Stars of the Week" following his standout performance against Pittsburgh. Elliott set a career high with 313 passing yards. His previous game high was 278 yards at NC State in Elliott was 22 of 31, threw for two touchdowns and posted a QB rating of It s the second straight game he completed a career-high 22 passes. SWEET EARNS ACC OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK HONORS North Carolina junior offensive tackle William Sweet was named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week after his performance in the win over Pitt, the league office announced the following Monday. The Jacksonville, Florida, product graded out at 91 percent and had a team-high 10 knockdown blocks to lead the Tar Heels to a win in the team's ACC opener. Sweet did not allow a pressure or a sack on the day, helping pave the way for the UNC offense to rush for 173 yards and three scores and gain a season-high 486 yards. PITT POSTGAME NOTES Carolina won its home opener for the sixth time in seven years under head coach Larry Fedora. UNC also won its ACC opener for the third time in four seasons. Carolina is now 10-3 against Pitt including wins in each of the last six games against the Panthers. Saturday's three-point margin of victory for the Tar Heels is the 11th time in 13 games between the two schools that the margin of victory was 10 points or fewer. He is the first UNC running back to score multiple rushing touchdowns in a game since Michael Carter had a pair against Virginia in TB Michael Carter missed the first two games this season due to injury, but returned to the lineup today and caught a 31-yard TD reception in his season debut. It was his second career touchdown catch. True freshman WR Dyami Brown hauled in his first career TD in the third quarter, a 19-yard pass from Nathan Elliott. WR Dazz Newsome set career highs with six catches for 110 yards. His previous high for yardage was 66 against Louisville in LB Cole Holcomb made a game-high 12 tackles (10 solo). The Panthers compiled 297 total yards in the first half and led at halftime. The Tar Heels out-scored the Panthers, 17-0, in the third quarter. The 35 points allowed by the Tar Heels are the most by an opponent in a win since UNC beat Florida State, 37-35, on 10/1/2016. ECU POSTGAME NOTES Junior QB Nathan Elliott completed a career-high 22 passes on 38 attempts for 219 yards. Junior TB Jordon Brown scored his first touchdown of the season in the second quarter. He rushed for four touchdowns last season and has six total TDs in his Tar Heel career. Brown rushed for 59 yards on 13 carries. Senior kicker Freeman Jones set a career high with four field goals on Saturday. He previously made two FGs each in back-to-back games against Miami and Pitt during the 2017 season. Jones is a perfect 5-for-5 this season and has made six straight field goal attempts going back to last year. Sophomore safety Miles Wolfolk was in on a career-high 11 tackles (nine solo) to lead UNC, and tops the eight stops he had at NC State during his freshman campaign of Freshmen defensive lineman Chris Collins and Jahlil Taylor, quarterback Cade Fortin and wide receiver Antoine Green made their Carolina debuts. CAL POSTGAME NOTES Ten freshmen made their UNC debuts on Saturday - OG William Barnes, WR Dyami Brown, LB Jeremiah Gemmel, DB DeAndre Hollins, DL Jake Lawler, DB Trey Morrison, DB Bryson Richardson, OG Billy Ross, DB Ben Stobaugh and TB Javonte Williams. Brown and Ross started the contest for UNC. Barnes, Brown, Hollins, Morrison, Richardson and Williams gave the Tar Heels six true freshmen on the field Saturday. In addition to the first-year players, TB Antonio Williams started in his first game since transferring from Ohio State in the offseason. Antonio Williams scored his first career Tar Heel touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard rush. Williams scored three TDs in 13 career games as a Buckeye. WR Anthony Ratliff-Williams caught three passes for a team-high 62 yards and a touchdown. The receiving touchdown was the seventh of his career. DE Malik Carney had a career day on Saturday. The senior had career highs of 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, and also matched a career best with eight tackles (seven solo). The 279 yards were the fewest allowed since Virginia gained just 253 yards against the Tar Heels in ELLIOTT NAMED TO EARL CAMPBELL TYLER ROSE WATCH LIST The sixth annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List was announced in August at the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce East Texas Kick- Off Luncheon, and North Carolina junior quarterback Nathan Elliott is among the candidates. Elliott appeared in five games in 2017 and threw for a team-high 10 touchdowns in leading the Tar Heels to a pair of wins in the final three games of the season. A native of Celina, Texas, Elliott completed 171 of 264 pass attempts for 2,624 yards, 44 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in leading Celina High School to a 13-3 record and a berth in the state semifinals as a senior. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/ or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college. MURPHY NAMED TO WUERFFEL WATCH LIST The Wuerffel Trophy announced its Watch List of 106 players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), and North Carolina senior deep snapper Kyle Murphy is among those under consideration. Murphy enters his fourth season of handling snapping duties on extra point and field goal attempts in The Charlotte, North Carolina, product is also a leader in the community for the Tar Heels, actively participating in a number of outreach programs throughout his time at UNC. Among his many activities, Murphy coordinates the student-athlete pen pal program that connects members of all 28 sport programs with local elementary school students. The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually at the All Sports Association's Awards Banquet in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. RATLIFF-WILLIAMS ON HORNUNG WATCH LIST, PRESEASON ALL-ACC The Louisville Sports Commission named 43 multi-talented college football players to the 2018 Watch List for the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, and North Carolina junior Anthony Ratliff-Williams was among the candidates listed. A native of Matthews, North Carolina, Ratliff-Williams had a breakout season a year ago in his first season as an offensive starter. He led the Tar Heels in receptions (35), receiving yards (630) and receiving touchdowns (6). He also established himself as one of the best kick returners in college football with a pair of kick return touchdowns and 895 return yards, second-most nationally. Ratliff-Williams, who was a first-team All-ACC pick as a return specialist and a third-team selection as an all-purpose back in 2017, was named to the All-ACC Preseason Football Team as a specialist. TUCKER NAMED TO MACKEY AWARD WATCH LIST The Friends of John Mackey have released the 2018 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List and North Carolina junior Carl Tucker is among those under consideration. Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2018 Mackey Award recipient will be announced on December 5, 2018, and then presented live on December 6, 2018, at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU. All future announcements can be found at A native of Cornelius, North Carolina, Tucker was limited to just four games due to injury in 2017, finishing the year with six catches for 100 yards. Throughout his time at UNC, Tucker has shown a knack for big plays, averaging more than 15 yards per catch for his career. CARTER A PRESEASON CANDIDATE FOR DOAK WALKER AWARD The PwC SMU Athletic Forum released the preseason candidates for the 2018 Doak Walker Award. Carter, a native of Navarre, Florida, rushed for 558 yards and a team-best eight touchdowns as a true freshman in SCHEDULE NOTES Carolina opens the 2018 campaign with a pair of non-conference road contests, a first for the Tar Heels under seventh-year head coach Larry Fedora. UNC will travel to Berkeley, California, to take on Cal on Sept. 1 before a visit to Greenville to take on East Carolina on Sept. 8. Carolina opened the 2016 season with a neutral-site game against Georgia in Atlanta before a road win at Illinois. The Tar Heels host UCF on Sept. 15 in the home opener before kicking off league play in Chapel Hill against Pitt on Sept. 22. Carolina will play a Thursday night game for the eighth consecutive season when the Tar Heels travel to south Florida to face Miami on Sept. 27. UNC is 9-8 all-time on Thursday nights, with a win at Pitt last November in its most recent primetime appearance. After an open week, the Tar Heels will host Virginia Tech on Oct. 13 before another set of back-to-back road games. On Oct. 20, Carolina will visit Syracuse for the first ACC meeting between the two schools, which have not faced off on the gridiron since In four all-time meetings, the road team has won all four contests - Syracuse won in Chapel Hill in 1995 and 2003 while the Tar Heels were victorious in the Carrier Dome in 1996 and UNC and Virginia will face off in the 123rd edition of the South's Oldest Rivalry in Charlottesville on Oct. 27. The Tar Heels have won four straight at Scott Stadium since snapping a 14-game road losing streak to the Cavaliers in Carolina will spend the entire month of November in the state of North Carolina, starting with a home game against Georgia Tech on Nov. 3. After the earliest Duke game in series history in 2017, the rivalry game returns to the season's final month in 2018 on Nov. 10 in Durham. UNC will host Western Carolina in its final non-conference game for the second straight year. The Tar Heels' win last season was the first meeting between the two schools. For the fourth consecutive season, UNC will close out the regular season against NC State, with the Tar Heels hosting the Wolfpack for Senior Day on Nov. 24. SPECIAL HOME GAME DESIGNATIONS North Carolina has announced several home game designations at Kenan Stadium for the 2018 football season, including Family Weekend on Sept. 22 vs. Pittsburgh, Homecoming on Nov. 3 vs. Georgia Tech and Military Appreciation Day on Nov. 17 vs. Western Carolina. 6 and former North Carolina head coach Mack Brown was among the 13 individuals honored. The inductees were selected from the national ballot of 75 All-America players and six elite coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and the 98 players and 31 coaches from the divisional ranks. Brown, who was honored in an on-campus celebration in August, will be officially inducted at the 61st NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4, 2018, at the New York Hilton Midtown. During 10 seasons as the head coach at North Carolina from , Brown won 69 games tied for the second most victories in school history. Brown's Tar Heels posted winning records in his final eight seasons and went to bowl games every year beginning in 1992, including a win in the 1993 Peach Bowl, the program's first bowl appearance since The 1996 ACC Coach of the Year led North Carolina to three 10-win seasons, and the team finished in the top 25 four times, including a No. 10 ranking in 1996 and the No. 4 spot in HUFF NAMED TO NFF HALL OF FAME BALLOT The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced in June the names on the 2019 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, including 76 players and six coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 100 players and 32 coaches from the divisional ranks. UNC's Ken Huff, a 1974 consensus first-team All-American and first-team All-ACC selection, is on this year's ballot. That season, Huff was the recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the ACC's best offensive lineman and he served as a team captain on a squad that set school total offense records and finish fifth nationally. Huff was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and was Carolina's ACC Legend at the 2015 conference championship game in Charlotte.
