Both teams are coming off primetime losses in their last action. Carolina dropped a decision at Miami on Sept. 27, while Virginia Tech suffered a loss to Notre Dame Saturday night in Blacksburg. Saturday's game will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU. CAROLINA-VIRGINIA TECH SERIES NOTES Carolina and Virginia Tech are meeting for the 41st time overall and 15th straight season since the Hokies joined the ACC. Virginia Tech leads the overall series, Five of the six ties were scoreless. The last tie was a score in Four of the last 10 meetings have been decided by a field goal. Five of the last 11 have been decided by a touchdown or less. Virginia Tech has won two straight in the series after last fall's 59-7 decision in Blacksburg. In the last meeting in Chapel Hill, Jarod Evans threw for two touchdows and ran for a third as Virginia Tech won a top-25 showdown UNC's last victory in the series came in 2015, when the Tar Heels won in overtime to clinch the ACC Coastal Division. The Tar Heels led in the fourth quarter before Virginia Tech mounted a tremendous comeback to tie it in Frank Beamer's last home game. After a Virginia Tech field goal in overtime, quarterback Marquise Williams found Quinshad Davis in the corner of the end zone for the winning score. Carolina and Virginia Tech met at least twice in every decade from the 1890s to the 1940s. The teams met 25 times from and 14 of those times at least one team did not score. Tar Heel great and College Football Hall of Fame member Charlie Choo-Choo Justice made his collegiate debut against Virginia Tech in a tie on September 28, 1946, in Kenan Stadium. Eight current Tar Heels are from Virginia: defensive end Malik Carney (Alexandria), defensive tackle Jeremiah Clarke (Alexandria), defensive end Chris Collins (Richmond), defensive tackle Aaron Crawford (Ashburn), offensive lineman Jay-Jay McCargo (Alexandria), wide receiver Dazz Newsome (Hampton), defensive end Tyler Powell (Midlothian) and cornerback Patrice Rene (Alexandria). TAR HEELS UNDER THE LIGHTS Saturday will mark the first Saturday night game for Carolina since a win at Illinois early in the 2016 season. It will be almost three years since the last Saturday night game in Kenan Stadium. On Oct. 17, 2015, the Tar Heels routed Wake Forest Under head coach Larry Fedora, UNC is 6-1 in regular season Saturday night games, including a perfect 5-0 mark at Kenan Stadium. In those five wins, Carolina has scored an average of 47.6 points, including at least 50 points three times. The first game played with artificial lighting at Kenan Stadium was a win over Duke on Nov. 19, 1983, for which portable lights were brought in to assist in TV coverage for a late afternoon start. 3 QUICK HITS DE Malik Carney was added to the Ted Hendricks Award Watch List following his performance at Cal. The senior had career highs of 3.5 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks, and also matched a career best with eight tackles (seven solo). The Hendricks Award honors the nation's top defensive end. The Tar Heel defense held Cal to 279 total yards in the season opener. That total marks the first time UNC has held an opponent under 300 yards since Stanford gained 283 yards in the 2016 Sun Bowl. The 279 yards were the fewest allowed since Virginia gained just 253 yards against the Tar Heels in Carolina has 16 total kick and punt return touchdowns since the start of the Larry Fedora era in That total was tied for the lead among all FBS programs during that six-year time frame. The Tar Heels were one of only five teams nationally to have multiple kick return touchdowns and over 1,000 kickoff return yards in Carolina returned the vast majority of its offensive playmakers from UNC scored 41 TDs a year ago and 36 of those are back in 2018, including Michael Carter, who led the team with nine scores. PK Freeman Jones, who led the roster with 64 total points, is also back. In total, 90 percent of the team s total offense - 4,003 of 4,435 yards - returns in Carolina runners were very secure with the ball in The Tar Heels lost just six fumbles in 12 games, tied for the fewest fumbles lost in school history with the 1996 squad. They have lost just one fumble through three games in Fedora sports a mark at Kenan Stadium during his career in Chapel Hill. His 25 home wins in his first five seasons were the most by any UNC coach in his first five seasons. Fedora-coached teams have been responsible for five of the top 10 offensive seasons in UNC history. Carolina has established more than 100 school single-season and career offensive records since In 2016, the Tar Heels established 36 individual records and six team records. Former UNC standout wide receiver Mack Hollins was part of the Philadelphia Eagles Super Bowl LII-winning team last season. Hollins became the 22nd different Tar Heel to win a Super Bowl, and those 22 winners have combined for a total of 29 rings won. OFFENSIVE LINE AMONG NATION'S BEST IN PREVENTING SACKS Through four games, Carolina has allowed just four total sacks, three of which game in the Thursday night loss at Miami. With just 4.0 sacks allowed, the Tar Heel offensive line ranks tied for sixth nationally in the category. MIAMI POSTGAME NOTES TB Michael Carter s first four carries of the game each went for a minimum of 13 yards and totaled 81 yards alone in the first quarter. QB Chazz Surratt, who missed the first three games of the season due to suspension, called his own number on his first drive of the year and scored on a 17-yard scamper in the first quarter. True freshman DB Trey Morrison registered his first career sack and had two TFLs. True freshman DB Bryson Richardson had UNC s first interception of the season in the third quarter. DE Malik Carney had two forced fumbles, two TFLs and a sack. The senior has 3.5 sacks in two games this season. ELLIOTT NAMED A MANNING STAR OF THE WEEK Nathan Elliott is one of eight quarterbacks named by The Manning Award as its "Stars of the Week" following his standout performance against Pittsburgh. Elliott set a career high with 313 passing yards. His previous game high was 278 yards at NC State in Elliott was 22 of 31, threw for two touchdowns and posted a QB rating of It s the second straight game he completed a career-high 22 passes. SWEET EARNS ACC OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK HONORS North Carolina junior offensive tackle William Sweet was named ACC Offensive Lineman of the Week after his performance in Saturday's win over Pitt, the league office announced Monday afternoon. The Jacksonville, Florida, product graded out at 91 percent and had a team-high 10 knockdown blocks to lead the Tar Heels to a win in the team's ACC opener. Sweet did not allow a pressure or a sack on the day, helping pave the way for the UNC offense to rush for 173 yards and three scores and gain a season-high 486 yards. PITT POSTGAME NOTES Carolina won its home opener for the sixth time in seven years under head coach Larry Fedora. UNC also won its ACC opener for the third time in four seasons. Carolina is now 10-3 against Pitt including wins in each of the last six games against the Panthers. Saturday's three-point margin of victory for the Tar Heels is the 11th time in 13 games between the two schools that the margin of victory was 10 points or fewer. Including today, the last eight matchups have been decided by a total of 31 points. QB Nathan Elliott set a career high with 313 passing yards. He is the first UNC running back to score multiple rushing touchdowns in a game since Michael Carter had a pair against Virginia in TB Michael Carter missed the first two games this season due to injury, but returned to the lineup today and caught a 31-yard TD reception in his season debut. It was his second career touchdown catch. True freshman WR Dyami Brown hauled in his first career TD in the third quarter, a 19-yard pass from Nathan Elliott. WR Dazz Newsome set career highs with six catches for 110 yards. His previous high for yardage was 66 against Louisville in LB Cole Holcomb made a game-high 12 tackles (10 solo). He had two tackles for a loss (including a sack), broke up one pass and had a quarterback hurry. PK Freeman Jones made 1 of 2 field goal attempts. His miss in the fourth quarter was his first in eight attempts dating back to the 2017 season. Carolina s defense limited Pitt to -5 yards of total offense in the third quarter. The Panthers compiled 297 total yards in the first half and led at halftime. The Tar Heels out-scored the Panthers, 17-0, in the third quarter. The 35 points allowed by the Tar Heels are the most by an opponent in a win since UNC beat Florida State, 37-35, on 10/1/2016.

4 ECU POSTGAME NOTES Junior QB Nathan Elliott completed a career-high 22 passes on 38 attempts for 219 yards. Junior TB Jordon Brown scored his first touchdown of the season in the second quarter. He rushed for four touchdowns last season and has six total TDs in his Tar Heel career. Brown rushed for 59 yards on 13 carries. Senior kicker Freeman Jones set a career high with four field goals on Saturday. He previously made two FGs each in back-to-back games against Miami and Pitt during the 2017 season. Jones is a perfect 5-for-5 this season and has made six straight field goal attempts going back to last year. Sophomore safety Miles Wolfolk was in on a career-high 11 tackles (nine solo) to lead UNC, and tops the eight stops he had at NC State during his freshman campaign of Freshmen defensive lineman Chris Collins and Jahlil Taylor, quarterback Cade Fortin and wide receiver Antoine Green made their Carolina debuts. CAL POSTGAME NOTES Ten freshmen made their UNC debuts on Saturday - OG William Barnes, WR Dyami Brown, LB Jeremiah Gemmel, DB DeAndre Hollins, DL Jake Lawler, DB Trey Morrison, DB Bryson Richardson, OG Billy Ross, DB Ben Stobaugh and TB Javonte Williams. Brown and Ross started the contest for UNC. Barnes, Brown, Hollins, Morrison, Richardson and Williams gave the Tar Heels six true freshmen on the field Saturday. In addition to the first-year players, TB Antonio Williams started in his first game since transferring from Ohio State in the offseason. Antonio Williams scored his first career Tar Heel touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 3-yard rush. Williams scored three TDs in 13 career games as a Buckeye. WR Anthony Ratliff-Williams caught three passes for a team-high 62 yards and a touchdown. The receiving touchdown was the seventh of his career. DE Malik Carney had a career day on Saturday. The 279 yards were the fewest allowed since Virginia gained just 253 yards against the Tar Heels in ELLIOTT NAMED TO EARL CAMPBELL TYLER ROSE WATCH LIST The sixth annual Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award Watch List was announced in August at the Tyler Area Chamber of Commerce East Texas Kick-Off Luncheon, and North Carolina junior quarterback Nathan Elliott is among the candidates. Elliott appeared in five games in 2017 and threw for a team-high 10 touchdowns in leading the Tar Heels to a pair of wins in the final three games of the season. A native of Celina, Texas, Elliott completed 171 of 264 pass attempts for 2,624 yards, 44 touchdowns and 10 interceptions in leading Celina High School to a 13-3 record and a berth in the state semifinals as a senior. The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award recognizes the top offensive player in Division I football who also exhibits the enduring characteristics that define Earl Campbell: integrity, performance, teamwork, sportsmanship, drive, community and tenacity; specifically, tenacity to persist and determination to overcome adversity and injury in pursuit of reaching goals. In addition, the nominee must meet one or more of the following criteria: born in Texas and/or graduated from a Texas High School and/or played at a Texas-based junior college or four-year college. Among his many activities, Murphy coordinates the student-athlete pen pal program that connects members of all 28 sport programs with local elementary school students. The Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service," is presented annually at the All Sports Association's Awards Banquet in Fort Walton Beach. Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Danny Wuerffel from the University of Florida, the Wuerffel Trophy is awarded to the FBS player that best combines exemplary community service with athletic and academic achievement. RATLIFF-WILLIAMS ON HORNUNG WATCH LIST, PRESEASON ALL-ACC The Louisville Sports Commission named 43 multi-talented college football players to the 2018 Watch List for the Paul Hornung Award presented by Texas Roadhouse, and North Carolina junior Anthony Ratliff- Williams was among the candidates listed. A native of Matthews, North Carolina, Ratliff-Williams had a breakout season a year ago in his first season as an offensive starter. He led the Tar Heels in receptions (35), receiving yards (630) and receiving touchdowns (6). He also established himself as one of the best kick returners in college football with a pair of kick return touchdowns and 895 return yards, secondmost nationally. Ratliff-Williams, who was a first-team All-ACC pick as a return specialist and a third-team selection as an all-purpose back in 2017, was named to the All-ACC Preseason Football Team as a specialist. TUCKER NAMED TO MACKEY AWARD WATCH LIST The Friends of John Mackey have released the 2018 John Mackey Award Preseason Watch List and North Carolina junior Carl Tucker is among those under consideration. Given annually to the most outstanding collegiate tight end, the award recipient is selected by vote of the John Mackey Award Selection Committee and the 2018 Mackey Award recipient will be announced on December 5, 2018, and then presented live on December 6, 2018, at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show on ESPNU. Throughout his time at UNC, Tucker has shown a knack for big plays, averaging more than 15 yards per catch for his career.

5 CARTER A PRESEASON CANDIDATE FOR DOAK WALKER AWARD The PwC SMU Athletic Forum released the preseason candidates for the 2018 Doak Walker Award. The Forum annually presents the award to the nation's top college running back. University of North Carolina sophomore Michael Carter made the list. Carter, a native of Navarre, Florida, rushed for 558 yards and a team-best eight touchdowns as a true freshman in SCHEDULE NOTES Carolina opens the 2018 campaign with a pair of non-conference road contests, a first for the Tar Heels under seventh-year head coach Larry Fedora. UNC will travel to Berkeley, California, to take on Cal on Sept. 1 before a visit to Greenville to take on East Carolina on Sept. 8. Carolina opened the 2016 season with a neutral-site game against Georgia in Atlanta before a road win at Illinois. The Tar Heels host UCF on Sept. 15 in the home opener before kicking off league play in Chapel Hill against Pitt on Sept. 22. Carolina will play a Thursday night game for the eighth consecutive season when the Tar Heels travel to south Florida to face Miami on Sept. 27. UNC is 9-8 all-time on Thursday nights, with a win at Pitt last November in its most recent primetime appearance. After an open week, the Tar Heels will host Virginia Tech on Oct. 13 before another set of back-to-back road games. On Oct. 20, Carolina will visit Syracuse for the first ACC meeting between the two schools, which have not faced off on the gridiron since In four all-time meetings, the road team has won all four contests - Syracuse won in Chapel Hill in 1995 and 2003 while the Tar Heels were victorious in the Carrier Dome in 1996 and UNC and Virginia will face off in the 123rd edition of the South's Oldest Rivalry in Charlottesville on Oct. 27. The Tar Heels have won four straight at Scott Stadium since snapping a 14-game road losing streak to the Cavaliers in Carolina will spend the entire month of November in the state of North Carolina, starting with a home game against Georgia Tech on Nov. 3. After the earliest Duke game in series history in 2017, the rivalry game returns to the season's final month in 2018 on Nov. 10 in Durham. UNC will host Western Carolina in its final non-conference game for the second straight year. The Tar Heels' win last season was the first meeting between the two schools. For the fourth consecutive season, UNC will close out the regular season against NC State, with the Tar Heels hosting the Wolfpack for Senior Day on Nov. 24. Brown, who was honored in an on-campus celebration in August, will be officially inducted at the 61st NFF Annual Awards Dinner on Dec. 4, 2018, at the New York Hilton Midtown. During 10 seasons as the head coach at North Carolina from , Brown won 69 games tied for the second most victories in school history. Brown's Tar Heels posted winning records in his final eight seasons and went to bowl games every year beginning in 1992, including a win in the 1993 Peach Bowl, the program's first bowl appearance since The 1996 ACC Coach of the Year led North Carolina to three 10-win seasons, and the team finished in the top 25 four times, including a No. 10 ranking in 1996 and the No. 4 spot in HUFF NAMED TO NFF HALL OF FAME BALLOT The National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame announced in June the names on the 2019 ballot for induction into the College Football Hall of Fame, including 76 players and six coaches from the Football Bowl Subdivision and 100 players and 32 coaches from the divisional ranks. UNC's Ken Huff, a 1974 consensus first-team All-American and first-team All-ACC selection, is on this year's ballot. That season, Huff was the recipient of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy as the ACC's best offensive lineman and he served as a team captain on a squad that set school total offense records and finish fifth nationally.
