5 Sun Belt Conference East Division Notes Florida Atlantic Florida International Middle Tennessee FAU notched its first win of the season over Palm Beach Atlantic on Thursday night. The Owls got their first game at the newly renovated FAU Arena, which underwent a $10 million facelift over the summer. The most notable accomplishment in that game happened when senior guard Shuteamia Brayboy became the Owls all-time assist leader. Brayboy passed Sherri Pla, who had 413 assists during her time at FAU from Brayboy had 12 assists in that game and has extended the career mark to 424 after Sunday s game at Kentucky. One other noteworthy accomplishment from that game, every player on the Owl roster played at least 10 minutes. And every player scored, led by freshman forward Jaimie Givens 20 points. South Alabama Troy Western Kentucky With the 2-0 record this past week, USA improved its record to 4-0 on the young season. The 4-0 start to the season is the first for USA since the club began the season with 12 straight wins. It is also just the third timeusa has began the season with four straight wins. In the win over at Ohio, true freshman Siedah Banks recorded a career-high 15 points off the bench. Banks was 6-of-8 from the field. The 42 points scored by USA against Tulsa on Nov. 17 were the fewest ever scored by a Pietri coached team in a win and the fewest in a win for USA since the season when USA defeated Judson College The point tally for USA was also the second fewest points scored by Lady Jags in a win in the program s 34-year history. Since the opening of the Mitchell Center back during the season, the 76 combined points by Tulsa and USA were also the lowest total ever in a game in the arena. The 76 combined points were also the second fewest ever in a Lady Jag game. Troy went 1-1 on the week after a game-winning basket by Kylie Morrissy against Kennesaw State on Monday night. The Trojans opened with a loss to Auburn on the road, but shot 50 percent from the floor and 53 percent from behind the arc. Senior Charlotte Marshall has posted double-digit rebounds in all three of WKU s games this season, capping off the week by tying a career high with 13 boards against Evansville. Marshall also added 13 points against the Purple Aces for her fourth career doubledouble. Crystal Kelly dropped in a season-high 27 points to lead Lady Toppers to the 19-point win over Evansville. That helped move her less than 200 points away from the WKU career scoring record, and just 201 points shy of becoming the Sun Belt s all-time leading scorer. Freshman Whitney Ballinger has scored in double-figures in each of the past two games to provide a spark off the bench for WKU. She scored a season-best 14 points at Notre Dame, then followed that up with 11 points and nine rebounds against Evansville. Format for the Sun Belt Conference Basketball Championships 1. Each divisional winner will receive a bye into the conference tournament along with the team with the next best conference record regardless of division. (The Wild Card Concept) 2. The first round of the tournament will be played at campus sites with the higher seed hosting the lower seed i.e. 4th seed vs. 13th seed, 5th seed vs. 12th seed, 6th seed vs. 11th seed, 7th seed vs. 10th seed and 8th seed vs. 9th seed. 3. The winners of these five on campus games will advance to join the top three seeds at a common site where the quarterfinals, semi-finals and finals will be held. Scheduling Criteria for Sun Belt Basketball Regular Season Play The conference has developed an 18-game, 3-year schedule that places emphasis on the following scheduling criteria: 1. Securing Saturday games featuring historical rivalries. 2. A balance of number of total contests (18) and home/away contests (9/9). 3. Allocating a similar number of home and away games for each school per month. 4. This strategy replaces the existing travel partner scheduling formula, which will also give schools greater flexibility to move games (i.e. for television, holidays). 5. Over the course of three years, schools within each division will play the same number of games against each opponent.

The Sun Belt Conference While there are 31 NCAA conferences that sponsor multiple sports, the Sun Belt is one of only eleven to participate in the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) and Division 1-A football, now known as the Football Bowl Subdivision. The Sun Belt was formed in 1976 with six members competing in four men s sports, and today comprises 13 institutions of higher learning while sponsoring 19 championship sports for men and women. The conference has influence in a region that carries significant importance, as its membership is spread out over eight states that represent 113 total electoral votes. Thus, if you carry the Sun Belt, you are almost half way to the White House! The Sun Belt Conference enters its 32nd season in with a proud history of athletic and academic success. The conference sponsors 10 women s sports - basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor and outdoor track and field, and volleyball; and nine men s sports baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, swimming and diving, tennis, and indoor and outdoor track and field. Each of the 19 sports has seen numerous team and individual accomplishments, and 12 Sun Belt Conference schools are currently graduating its student athletes at a rate higher than their school s student body. All Sun Belt schools are committed to excellence in the 21st century, and facility upgrades and expansion are occurring on virtually every campus. Because of its status as a member of the Division 1-A football coalition, the Sun Belt Conference has a permanent seat on the NCAA s 17-member Board of Directors. As a result, the conference has a crucial voice on some of the most pressing issues in college athletics and will always have a role in the implementation of any future NCAA legislation and guidelines. The conference continues to utilize television to grow and promote the league. Adding volleyball, baseball and softball to the conference s television package has resulted in more national and regional television exposure for the league than at any time in its history. The conference s regional television package enables live telecasts of Sun Belt events to reach over 20 million households. Additionally, ESPN televised the conference s men s basketball championship game for the 27th straight season in 2007, marking its longest affiliation with any conference in the country. The Sun Belt Conference has partnered with XOS Technologies, Inc. to deliver a full-service, customized, public and premium web site to provide fans with a broad range of real-time information and content about the conference s athletic teams. The Sun Belt is one of the few conferences in the nation to provide video highlights and features on its website from each of the league s respective championships. This technology serves as a great recruiting tool for schools by enabling anyone in the world with internet access to view the conference s championship events, and fans in five different countries viewed the conference s most recent soccer championship. Prominent Sun Belt alumni include United States Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice (Denver), NFL Hall of Fame football player Mean Joe Greene (North Texas), Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star baseball player Luis Gonzalez (South Alabama), former member of the United States Senate and House of Representatives John Breaux (Louisiana-Lafayette), country music superstar Tim McGraw (Louisiana-Monroe), and actor Andy Garcia (Florida International). The conference s first 30 years have also produced numerous individual national champions along with Olympic track medalists including Earl Bell, Tom Hill and Al Joyner (Arkansas State), Hollis Conway (Louisiana-Lafayette), and Tayna Lawrence (Florida International). Old Dominion s Anne Donovan received the Naismith Trophy recognizing the nation s top women s basketball player in 1983, helped the United States win the Olympic gold medal in 1984, and helped the Lady Monarchs capture the national championship in 1985 (one of eight women s Final 4 appearances by Sun Belt schools: Old Dominion , 1985; WKU 1985, 1986, 1992; Louisiana Tech 1994, 1998, 1999).
