15 SEASON SUMMARIES 8/31/12 ST. JOSEPH 14, MARSHALL 12 DICKINSON N STADIUM ST. JOSEPH Sometimes you win ugly, but in the end you still win. St. Joe won a hard fought defensive battle against Battle Creek Lakeview at Dickinson Stadium to give the Bears a 2-0 start for the third straightt season. The game started slow for both teams but also sloppy for the Bears. St. Joe s defense stepped up after a muffed punt reception gave Lakeview the ball at the Bears 7 yard line. On the very next play, Mason Shinrock intercepted Lakeview s Camden Hanes and the threat was over. After both teams traded punts on the next three drives, Lakeview got on the scoreboard first with just 8 seconds remaining in the first quarter as Riley Davis had a 4 yard touchdown run but the extra point was blocked by Jordan Askew, but Lakeview had a 6-0 lead. St. Joe s Terrill Wilburn carries the ball in the Bears win over Battlee Creek Lakeview (photo Don Campbell - HP) Neither team was able to add any points in the second quarter, but a few mistakes by the Bears gave Lakeview some golden opportunities which were stopped by the St. Joe defense. Two turnovers by the Bear offense gave Lakeview the ball inside St. Joee territory twice, plus a bad snap on a Bear punt gave the ball to the Spartans at the St. Joe 11 and the defense again kept Lakeview out of the endzonee and off the scoreboard too end the first half. The Bear defense allowed 38 total yards for Lakeview in the first half. Lakeview s struggle on offense would continue on their first drive of the second half, going 3 and out. After the Bears got the ball back at the 50 yard line, St. Joe went on a six play drive to take thee lead when James Morris threw a nine yard touchdown pass to Jalen Holmes, adding the extra point by Ryan Kitron, St. Joe took the lead at 7-6. Lakeview would retake the lead with 53 seconds remaining in the third quarter when Mike Campbell had a 30 yard touchdown run. The Spartans would attempt the 2 point conversion, but it failed with the pass was intercepted, but Lakeview still had the lead at St. Joe wasted little time to respond as Jack Turak had a 53 yard touchdown run on the second play of the drive with Kitron again adding the PAT and St. Joe had the lead once again at Neither team s offense could muster any scoring chances the rest of thee way, but the Bear defense stepped up again to stop any Lakeview attempt as Mason Shinrock intercepted a halfback optionn pass from running back Nick Ayers on 4 th and long.. St. Joe would get the ball at their own 5 yard line with just over a minutee left in the game and ran out the clock to go to 2-0 on o the season, while Lakeview fell to 0-2. The areaa is where the current high school now stands. Around that same time the citizens of St. Joseph recognized the needd for a new athletic and recreation area. The St. Joe football team played their games att Wells field (where Jefferson elementary currently sits). There was no parking for the fans, except on the neighboring streets, and the wooden grandstands were in danger of collapse. It was then that the St. Joe residents got the ball rolling for a new facility. After receiving numerous recommendations by various experts, the planning committee, commissioned architect Robert V. Knox to develop the sketches and conceptual drawings of the stadium. The Board of Education would take these plans to the various service clubs around St. Joseph to rally the community involvement in the project, Every group that were presented the plans went on record as supporting it. The voters overwhelmingly passed the $170,000 bond proposal on July 25, 1949 for the new stadium and track. A little over a year later, on September 22, 1950, the original Dickinson Stadium opened. Dickinson Stadium held it's last event on October 19, In the 51 yearr history of the stadium it was the home to thousands of events, including football games, track meets, soccer games, band competitions, and commencement ceremonies. The new Dickinson Stadium The idea for a new stadium came aboutt when a commission was charged with reviewing and making recommendations on the future of the facilities of the St. Joseph Public School system for the next years. After a review of the old stadium it was determined that to bring the stadium's aging and deteriorating steel support and infrastructure up to code would be a very expensive project. The commission visited newly constructed high schools around the Midwest and made recommendation ns for the St. Joe schools, including a new football stadium. In March of 2001 a plan for a bond proposal was presented to the St. Joe taxpayers, which not only included the new stadium, but also a new athletic fieldhouse and other various projects att the high school, and a new auxiliary gym, offices, library and orchestra room at Upton Middle School. The bond issue passed on September 25, 2001, less than a month later, the last game at the old Dickinson Stadium was played and demolition begun. The new stadium still has one feature from the old stadium, and that is the electronic WAYLAND-UNION scoreboard/message center that was installed prior to the 1998 season. The scoreboard was dismantled and moved from it's previous location to where it currently stands. Thee stadium now also has an 8 lane running track, the old stadium had 7 and only 6 were useable. The first games were played on Thursday, Septemberr 4th, by the Freshman and JV teams who gave the stadium its first shakedown before the t Grand Opening a week later. The official dedication was prior to the game between St. Joseph and Kalamazoo Central, which St. Joe won Less than a year after the opening, the new Dickinson Stadium had the honor of hostingg country musicc and TV star Reba McIntyre for a performance benefiting Harbor Habitat for Humanity, The concert was part of Reba's 2004 tour which was sponsored by Whirlpool Corporation. 20 PRESSS CLIPPINGS Herald Palladium 8/22/12 Run, run, run for Bears AL AREND HP Spots Correspondent St. Joseph plans on running the football about 65 percent of the time this season. "I like our running backs, We have lots of talent there." said second year coach Gandalf Church, whos squad went 7-3 last season. "Our offensive line can be good, it just needs time to jell. But the talent and potential is there; they just need game experience. A main reason for Church's running game optimism is the return of 6-foot, 200 pound senior tailback Alex Rutherford. Rutherford rushed for 1,207 years and 14 touchdowns last fall, averaging yards per game. He is a mere 333 yards away from breaking the school's career rushingg mark set by Mike Ryan (2,366 yards in ). "We'vee got a lot of kinds that can run the ball, including juniors Justin Gambrell and Jack Turak," noted Church. "I expect us to run it about 65 percent of the time." Churchh said his biggest concern is the inexperience of his defensive line. "We'ree strong at linebacker and in i the secondary, but the four guys up front are goingg to have to learn fast," stated Church. The Bears return five starters on offense and four on defense. Returning on offense is senior quarterback James Morris, who completed 50 percent of his passes for 1,005 yards and six TD's a year ago. Also back are Rutherford, tight end Kam Stortz, center Dawson Laney, and tackle Dakota Wieffenbach, all seniors. "Morris is doing real well and we expect him to have a good year," Church said. Defensive starters back inclune seniors Matt Boozer at end, Zach Kirkpatrick at free safety, Stortz at linebacker and junior Gambrell at safety. "Offensively we plan to run our of an I-base, but can break out in to multiple formations," added Church, "Defensively, we'll stick with our 4-3 base." Others expected to start on offense include junior full back Jack Turak, junior tight end Conner Hubble, 6-3, 320-pound tackle Birch Bradford, guards Jordan Askew and pound senior Zach Weisser. Five are battling for the two wide recever spots. They include juniors Mason Shinrock and Joe Fratzke, plus senior Dominique Eddie, Collin Churchill, and Kirkpatrick. "Offensively, wide receiver is our least experienced position," noted Church. Starting on defensee besides Boozer, Stortz, Gambrell, and Kirpatrick will be Weiffenbach or Hubble at end. Four others aree vying for the two tackle spots in sophomores Connor Myer and Wes French, and seniors Askew and Weisser., Turak will bee at outside linebacker. The corners will be Shinrock and Churchill. Senior Ryan Kitron returns as punter and place kicker. Senior starter Jalen Holmes (WR and CB) is still recovering from a dislocated should he injured in the Lakeshore game last fall and is not expected back until the third or fourth week, according to Church. "Offensively we have to try and keep teams off balance; try to do the opposite of what they expect us to do," added Church, who expects the Big 16's West Division "to be very competitive" with returning champ Mattawan "to be very good."
