Sanchez recorded a passer rating on 16-of-25 passing for 194 yards and three touchdowns in the club s win at NE (1/16). It was the first time he has thrown three touchdown passes in a postseason game, and tied the club record for most in a single postseason game. He led the Jets on a five-play, 40-yard game-winning drive, in which he completed all three of his passes for 38 yards in the Wild Card victory at IND (1/8). The Jets win marked Sanchez s third postseason win, the most by any QB in franchise history. His eight career rushing touchdowns is third amongst Jets quarterbacks in club history. In Week Three, Tomlinson recorded the 160th touchdown of his career. He finished the game with five receptions for 116 yards. It was his first 100-yard receiving game since 2003 (at GB 12/14). In 2010, he led the team with 914 yards and six rushing touchdowns on 219 carries last season. His 52 receptions were second on the team. He recorded the second-most productive postseason game of his career at IND (1/8) when he rushed for two touchdowns and 82 yards on 16 carries (5.1 avg.). Undrafted rookie free agent Josh Baker was signed to the active roster as a FB/TE (9/27/11) after TE Jeff Cumberland suffered a season-ending injury at OAK (9/25). Baker appeared in his first NFL game in the Jets 24-6 victory over MIA (10/17). Wide Receivers (5), Returning Starter (1), Coach Henry Ellard: The lone starter returning in 2011 is Santonio Holmes. Since 1983, no NFL receiver has caught more touchdown passes (5) in the final 1:00 of 4th quarter/overtime (including playoffs) than Holmes. The Super Bowl XLIII MVP re-signed with the Jets this offseason and was named captain by Coach Ryan. The new members of the Jets receiving corps are 10-year veteran Plaxico Burress, 2011 fifth-round selection Jeremy Kerley, Patrick Turner (who saw limited action in 2010) and first-year player Eron Riley. Burress returns to the NFL for the first time since last seeing action in In Week One, Burress recorded four receptions for 72 yards and a 26-yard touchdown, his first touchdown since at PHI (11/09/08). The two players started 82 consecutive games together before Mangold missed his first two NFL contests at OAK (9/25) and at BLT (10/2), eventually returning at NE (10/9). The streak made them the only two players who entered the league together to start their team s first 75 regular-season games on the same offensive line since Ferguson earned his secondconsecutive Pro Bowl nod for his play last season. He was also awarded 2010 Pro Football Weekly s Midseason All-Pro team honors, 2009 Pro Bowl honors and 2006 All-Rookie Team honors by Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writer s Association. During his first four seasons, Mangold earned Associated Press All-Pro honors (09, 10), three consecutive Pro Bowl selections (08, 09, 10) and All-Rookie recognition in 2006 as voted by Pro Football Weekly and the Pro Football Writer s Association. 6 in a trade with Green Bay (9/3/11) OVERVIEW BY POSITION Defensive Line (7), Returning Starters (2), Coach Mark Carrier and Coach Jeff Weeks: Led by veteran starter DT Mike DeVito (5th season) and defensive captain NT Sione Pouha (7th season), the Jets field a defensive line with four players who have three-or-less years of experience. The leaders of this group teamed up to make a huge play in the season opener vs. DAL (9/11) when DeVito recorded the first full-sack of his career dropping QB Tony Romo and forcing a fumble at the Jets two-yard line that Pouha would recover for the fourth fumble recovery of his career. The group was infused with two draft selections this season, DE Muhammad Wilkerson (first round, 30th overall) and NT Kenrick Ellis (third round, 94th overall). DeVito earned 11 starts and recorded 46 tackles in Pouha started 29 games in the seasons and helped the Jets defense finish first overall in 2009 and fourth in Wilkerson earned his first-career sack in Week Two, when he dropped Jaguars QB Luke McCown in the end zone for a safety. It was the first time a player recorded a safety on his first-career sack since 2008, when Ravens LB Jameel McClain did it for a Rex Ryan-led defense in Baltimore. Marcus Dixon, who was awarded to the Jets off waivers (9/5/10) and registered his first-career sack when he dragged down Bears QB Jay Cutler at CHI (12/26/10), helps provide depth along with Ropati Pitoitua, who missed all of 2010 due to an injury and earned his first-career sack at NE (10/9) when he swung down QB Tom Brady, and Martin Tevaseu. Ellis earned his first start vs. SD (10/23). Linebackers (8), Returning Starters (3), Coach Bob Sutton: Led by inside linebackers David Harris and Bart Scott and flanked by Calvin Pace and Jamaal Westerman, following the season-ending injury to Bryan Thomas, this unit allows the Jets defense to use multiple schemes. Harris was re-signed to a long-term deal this offseason and has responded with another productive season, recording two sacks and an interception this season. He scored the first touchdown of his NFL career at BLT (10/2) when he returned an INT 35 yards. Scott, who is the tone-setter for the Jets defense, finished second on the team last year with 94 tackles, one sack, one forced fumble and one pass defensed. He is currently tied for third on the team with 2.5 sacks. Pace played in his first season opener since 2008 and recorded a sack of DAL QB Tony Romo. Including the playoffs, he recorded a sack in five consecutive games dating back to the 2010 season finale vs. BUF (1/2/11). His streak ended in the 32-3 victory vs. JAX (9/18). He currently is tied for the team lead with three sacks. Third-year man Westerman took on a greater role following the injury to Bryan Thomas. In his first game taking over for Thomas at NE (10/9), he recorded two sacks of Brady. Second-year LB Josh Mauga has solidified himself as the third ILB and has earned and a greater role at OLB after serving on special teams last season. He recorded the first interception of his career in Week Two. Former BUF first-round selection Aaron Maybin and first-year man Garrett McIntyre provide depth at the outside linebacker positions while Nick Bellore, the club s lone 2011 undrafted free agent to make the team out of training camp, provides depth on the inside. Maybin recorded the first sack and forced fumble of his NFL career in his first game with the Jets (at BLT 10/2). In four games with the Jets, he has three sacks and three forced fumbles. Bellore and McIntyre are first and second, respectively, on the team in special teams tackles. Thomas suffered an achilles injury in Week Four at BLT (10/2) and was placed on injured reserve on 10/8. Defensive Backs (11), Returning Starters (4), Coach Dennis Thurman and Jim O Neil This group is led by All-Pro Darrelle Revis, who set up the Jets game-winning field goal in Week One vs. DAL (9/11) when he intercepted a DAL QB Tony Romo pass intended for WR Dez Bryant and returned it 20 yards to DAL 34. Revis tied the team record with a 100-yard interception return vs. MIA (10/17). Currently, Revis is tied for third in the NFL with four interceptions. The secondary also returns starting S Jim Leonhard, who returns to action after a season ending injury in The safety tandem of Eric Smith and Brodney Pool split time in 2010 as starters and both re-signed with the Jets for the 2011 season. Pool started 12 of the 2010 contests, but Smith, who started six games last year, got the starting nod in 2011 and recorded the second sack of his career in the second quarter vs. DAL (9/11) and the fifth interception of his career vs. JAX (9/18). CB Antonio Cromartie, who this summer re-signed to a long-term deal with the Jets, is also back in the fold and has three interceptions, a 23.6 KOR avg. and recorded a rush for one yard. Second-year cornerback and 2010 first-round selection Kyle Wilson is joined by Donald Strickland, a former Jet who spent 2010 with the San Diego Chargers, as nickel cornerbacks. Wilson registered the first INT of his career vs. SD (10/23/11). The secondary is rounded out with young veterans Marquice Cole, Emanuel Cook, Ellis Lankster and Isaiah Trufant, who recovered a blocked punt for the game-tying touchdown in Week One vs. DAL (9/11). This group has been pivotal in holding opposing passers to a 60.5 passer rating, best in the NFL, on 118-of-218 passing with 4 TD and 11 INT. Specialists (3), Returning Starters (2), Coach Mike Westhoff and Ben Kotwica Kicker Nick Folk and long snapper Tanner Purdum return to a group that adds new punter T.J. Conley. Folk has connected on all ten of his FG attempts this season, including a game winning 50-yarder in Week One vs. DAL (9/11). As a Jet, he has connected on three game winning FGs, including an overtime kick at DET (11/7) and a kick at IND (1/8) in the AFC Wild Card playoff game. Conley secured the punting job in his third training camp with the Jets. 12 REX RYAN RYAN=DEFENSE Like most sons, Rex Ryan always knew he wanted to be in the family business. For the Ryans, the family business is stifling defense. In 1985, his father, Buddy Ryan, led what is widely considered to be the best defense in NFL history. Known simply as the 85 Bears, Buddy s unit allowed 12.4 points a game. For the season, they allowed 20 touchdowns (9 rushing, 10 passing and 1 on a return). Rex has been a part of some of the NFL s best defenses himself. In 2000, he served as the defensive line coach for a Baltimore Ravens team that allowed an NFL best 10.3 points a game. In 16 games, the 2000 Ravens allowed 18 touchdowns (5 rushing, 11 passing and 2 on returns). As a defensive coordinator in 2006, Rex almost matched his father s 1985 feat, allowing 12.6 points a game with the Ravens. Rex s 2006 team led the NFL in 11 categories: yards per game (264.1), yards per play (4.51), rushing yard per game (75.9), rushing yards per play (3.31), interception rate (5.5%), sacks per pass attempt (11.79%), first downs per game (14.8), third-down conversions allowed (28.9%), red zone pct. (33.3%) and points allowed a game (12.6). In 2009, Rex returned the family business to the Jets, where his father earned his first NFL job. Rex took a defense that ranked 10th in scoring for the 2008 season to the top of the NFL rankings in seven categories: yards per game (252.3), yards per play (4.24), passing yards a game (153.7), passing yards per play (4.91), first downs allowed (14.8), third-down conversions allowed (31.5%) and points allowed (14.8). SAFETY FIRST UNDER RYAN Since Rex Ryan became the head coach of the Jets in 2009, the team is tied for the NFL lead with four safeties (including the postseason). WR Santonio Holmes, NT Sione Pouha, CB Darrelle Revis, QB Mark Sanchez and S Eric Smith will wear the C on their jerseys for the 2011 season. Coach Ryan had this to say about his selection of captains. It was not voted on. This is something that I chose. I chose these guys based on what I see on the practice field, the game field, the classroom, their leadership, what they mean to their units, the pride and everything else. That s what I m looking for in those individuals. AFFECTING THE QUARTERBACK The Jets affect quarterbacks in more ways than just sacks. Since 2009, the Jets rank first in the NFL in opponents completion percentage (51.7%) and opponents passer rating (67.3) 2011: 10 different Jets combined for 18 sacks, eight less than NFL-leading Giants passer rating - best in NFL 54.1 completion percentage - fifth in NFL 2010: 14 different Jets combined for 40 sacks, eight less than the NFLleading Steelers with passer rating sixth in NFL 50.7 completion percentage best in NFL 2009: 10 different Jets combined for 32 sacks, 16 less than the NFL-leading Vikings with passer rating best in NFL completion percentage best in NFL. 8 TD passes allowed best in NFL. Aaron Maybin (NYJ 11-) Playing just four games since rejoining the team, Maybin has notched three sacks (tied for first this season) and three forced fumbles (tied for the league lead). Calvin Pace (NYJ 09- ) In Pace s first season with Pettine as Defensive Coordinator, he posted a career-high with 8.0 sacks in just 12 games played. Sione Pouha (NYJ 09- ) In two seasons under Pettine, Bo has become a stalwart in the middle of the Jets defense. He produced his two highest single-season tackle totals of 61 (2009) and 46 (2010). Pouha also recorded his first two full sacks of his career in Terrell Suggs (BLT 05-08) In four seasons under Pettine, Suggs posted his four highest tackle totals, collected four of his five career interceptions and posted three seasons of at least eight sacks, leading the team in sacks twice. Adalius Thomas (BLT 05-06) Thomas enjoyed his two best seasons in his only two seasons with Pettine when he notched 9.0 sacks in 2005 and 11.0 sacks in SCHOOLED BY SCHOTTY Drew Brees (SD 02-05) Schottenheimer arrived in San Diego for Brees second season and quickly became a large part of his development with 2002 marking his first season as a starting quarterback. In four seasons with Schotty, Brees averaged over 3,000 yards a season, completing 62.3% of his passes and compiling an 84.7 passer rating. Chad Pennington (NYJ 06-07) Schottenheimer s first season with the Jets coincided with the return of Chad Pennington from a season-ending injury the year before. Under Schotty s direction, Pennington posted a then career-best 3,352 yards passing, completing 64.5% of his passes for an 82.6 passer rating. Pennington also took home NFL Comeback Player of the Year honors as he keyed a Jet return to the postseason. Thomas Jones (NYJ 07-09) Jones was considered a journeyman for the earlier part of his career after spending his first seven seasons in the league with three different teams. In that time, he averaged yards and 4.9 touchdowns per season. In 2007, he was acquired by the Jets in an offseason trade and instantly became an integral part of Coach Schottenheimer s offense. In three seasons under Schottenheimer, Jones averaged 1,277.7 yards rushing and 9.3 rushing touchdowns a season and set career-highs in rushing yards (1,312) and rushing touchdowns (13) in Dustin Keller (NYJ 08-) Keller, the Jets 2008 first-round pick, caught 93 passes, the most by a Jets tight end in their first two NFL seasons. In 2010, Keller led the team in receptions with 55 for 687 yards and five touchdowns. Under Schottenheimer, Keller has become a go-to player with 199 career catches for 2,418 yards and 15 touchdowns, including the postseason Mark Sanchez (NYJ 09- ) Sanchez, the Jets 2009 first-round pick, was chosen to direct Schottenheimer s offense. Since then, Sanchez finished his second season with a career-high of 3,291 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions, making him the second youngest Jets quarterback to pass for over 3,000 yards. He is also the youngest quarterback in NFL history to throw eight touchdown passes and no interceptions during the first five games of the season. During Sanchez s two consecutive playoff runs, he tied the club record for the most postseason touchdown passes in a single game with three. He led the Jets to a club record of four road victories, and tied the record for the most postseason road wins in the NFL. Additionally, Sanchez is tied for the second-most victories by any quarterback in his first two NFL seasons, including the postseason, with R Pettine and Schottenheimer
