During that span, he has directed a Jets offense that has averaged 32.3 points per game, an amount that ranks second in the NFL. see page 25 The Jets top the NFL with a plus-eight advantage in takeaway/give-away. The defense has registered nine takeaways (tied for third best in the AFC), while the offense has turned the ball over once (a lost fumble in Week One). With the win at Buffalo, the Jets are now 3-0 in the AFC East, with all three wins coming in consecutive weeks. His passer rating is fourth best in the NFL behind Peyton Manning (112.2), Tom Brady (109.1) and Michael Vick (108.8). Veteran Mark Brunell signed with the Jets as a free agent on 7/28/10 to serve as the backup for Sanchez. Coming off a Super Bowl victory with NO last season, the three-time Pro Bowler enters his 18th season in the NFL and has thrown for 31,928 yards and 182 touchdowns and rushed for 2,421 yards and 15 touchdowns during his career. He saw his only action of the season in the Jets win at BUF (10/3). Fifthyear passer Kellen Clemens serves as the emergency quarterback on game day. For his career, Clemens has completed 146 passes, five touchdowns and 11 interceptions on 282 pass attempts. Running Backs (5), Returning Starter (1), Coach Anthony Lynn: Future Hall-of-Fame running back LaDainian Tomlinson leads the team with 341 yards and three touchdowns on 56 carries. Recorded 133 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries at BUF (10/3), his first 100-yard effort since 10/26/08 at NO (19-105). Second-year runner Shonn Greene has rushed for 223 yards on 52 carries. Three-time Pro Bowl fullback Tony Richardson has helped his teams rush for 20-or-more touchdowns in seven of the past eight seasons, including league-highs in 2002 (KC), 2003 (KC), 2004 (KC) and 2007 (KC). Selected by the Jets with the 139th pick overall in the fifth round from Kentucky rookie fullback John Conner sees action as a key reserve on offense and on special teams. Wide Receivers (4), Returning Starters (2), Coach Henry Ellard: Returning veterans Jerricho Cotchery, Braylon Edwards and Brad Smith lead this group, with Super Bowl XLIII MVP Santonio Holmes expected to make his New York Jets debut in Week Five versus Minnesota. Edwards leads Jets wide receivers with 12 receptions for 227 yards and three touchdowns, two of his three touchdowns have been on passes of 40 yards or more. Cotchery, who has led the team in receiving the previous three seasons has recorded 11 receptions for 90 yards. Smith has caught one pass for 11 yards and has rushed for 79 yards on eight carries. He threw the first touchdown pass of his career at BUF (10/3), a three-yard toss to TE Dustin Keller. Smith has scored his six career touchdowns in five different ways (pass, reception (2), rushing, kickoff return and blocked punt return). He also keys the Jets Seminole attack. Tight Ends (4), Returning Starter (1), Coach Mike Devlin: Third-year man Dustin Keller leads all Jets receivers with 19 catches for 254 yards and five touchdowns. Ben Hartsock serves as the second tight end. Matthew Mulligan serves as the third-string tight end and has seen action in all four games, making a start in the season opener vs. BLT (9/13). Undrafted free agent Jeff Cumberland made the roster as the fourth tight end, but has not seen any action during the regular season. Offensive Line (8), Returning Starters (4), Coach Bill Callahan: Four of the five starters return for an offensive line that helped the Jets lead the NFL in rushing a year ago with 2,756 yards. LT D Brickashaw Ferguson has started 68 consecutive regular-season games at left tackle and earned his first Pro Bowl appearence in Second-year man LG Matt Slauson earned the starting job after an impressive offseason. All-Pro C Nick Mangold has started 68 regular season games and has earned two Pro Bowl appearances. 5 OVERVIEW BY POSITION Defensive Line (8), Returning Starters (2), Coach Mark Carrier: Lost Pro Bowl NT Kris Jenkins in the season opener but has still held opposing rushing attacks to 3.2 yard per carry, which is good for third best in the NFL. This group is led by two-time Pro Bowl defensive end Shaun Ellis, who s 71 career sacks as a Jet ranks third all-time in team history. On the season, Ellis has recorded three sacks, nine tackles and one forced fumble. Mike DeVito has earned two starts following the loss of Jenkins and leads all Jets defensive linemen with 12 tackles. Sione Pouha has started all four games (three at NT and one at DT), moved over the center to replace the injured Jenkins and has recorded seven tackles and has recovered two fumbles. Versatile defensive lineman Vernon Gholston earns snaps on the line and at linebacker and has seen action in all four of the Jets games this season. Trevor Pryce signed with the Jets on 9/29/10 after being released by BLT and is expected to help the interior pass rush. Providing depth on the defensive line are Matt Kroul, who spent the 2009 season on the practice squad and Howard Green, who was re-signed by the Jets on 10/4/10. Marcus Dixon was awarded to the Jets off of waivers on 9/5/10 and has been inactive for all four games this season. Linebackers (8), Returning Starters (4), Coach Bob Sutton and Jeff Weeks Led by inside linebackers David Harris and Bart Scott, this unit features the NFL active sack leader Jason Taylor, versatile linebacker Bryan Thomas and 2009 Jets leading sacker Calvin Pace. Harris leads the team with 29 tackles and has two passes defended, while Scott is third on the club with 22 tackles, one forced fumble and one pass defended. Thomas continues to do everything asked of him recording 14 tackles, one sack, one pass defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Taylor has added two sacks this season to bring his career total to 129.5, the most by any active player in the NFL. Kenwin Cummings and Lance Laury provide depth inside while second-year man Jamaal Westerman earns snaps inside, outside and on the defensive line in passing situations. All three reserves have key roles on special teams. Defensive Backs (10), Returning Starters (2), Coach Dennis Thurman and Jim O Neil Group is directed by six-year player Jim Leonhard and All-Pro Darrelle Revis. They welcome three new players, Brodney Pool, who has started one game and has recorded eight tackles and an interception, Antonio Cromartie, who leads the team with two interceptions and rookie first-round selection Kyle Wilson, who earned a start in Week Three due to an injury to Revis. Fifth-year veteran, Drew Coleman, began training camp as the sixth corner on the depth chart, but has played his way into the rotation, earning a start at BUF (10/3). For the season he has six tackles, two passes defensed and recorded the second interception of his career when he sealed the Jets second victory of the season at Miami in Week Three. Eric Smith, who started three games while Pool was limited, rounds out the secondary with young-veterans James Ihedigbo and Dwight Lowery. All three players serve significant roles on special teams. Specialists (3), Returning Starter (1), Coach Mike Westhoff and Ben Kotwica The only player to return in this group is punter Steve Weatherford, who joined the Jets before opening week in Through the first four games, he has placed eight of his 20 punts inside the opponents 20-yard line while averaging a 38.8 net average. His average is good for fifth best in the AFC. The Jets welcomed a former Pro Bowl kicker, Nick Folk, this offseason. For the season, Folk has conected on seven-of-nine kicks with a long of 49 yards. For the first time since 2001, the Jets long snapping duties are not being handled by James Dearth. This season, first-year player Tanner Purdum has assumed the role. NEWYORKJETS.COM 5

6 INDIVIDUAL SERIES HIGHLIGHTS RB LaDAINIAN TOMLINSON In two games against the Vikings, Tomlinson has posted 202 yards and three touchdowns rushing on 32 carries (6.3 average) and 82 yards on 12 receptions. In an 11/19/03 game against Minnesota, Tomlinson gained 162 yards on just 16 carries, scoring twice, first on a 73-yard run in the first quarter and again on a one-yard run in the second quarter. The 73-yard score marked the second-longest touchdown run of his career, while his 162 yards on the ground represent the most rushing yards the Vikings have allowed since His 207 total yards are also the most allowed by Minnesota since FB TONY RICHARDSON Richardson, the former Viking, had faced his old team three times prior to joining them in In three contests with KC, he gained 72 yards on 17 carries, including 57 yards on 11 carries on 12/12/99 to lead KC in rushing. Always a fullback first, he paved the way for teammate Priest Holmes to score three times on the ground in the 12/20/03 game. Those three rushing touchdowns are tied for the most given up by Minnesota in a game since LB JASON TAYLOR Taylor has played in three career games against the Vikings, but has posted a pretty complete stat line. He has registered 2.5 sacks for 11 yards lost, recorded three forced fumbles, had two fumble recoveries and picked off a Brad Johnson pass that he returned 51 yards for a touchdown. His most complete game came in 2006, the year he won Defensive Player of the Year as he posted one sack, the 51-yard interception return and two forced fumbles in the 11/19/06 contest. S BRODNEY POOL Pool, inactive for the game against Minnesota his rookie season, played against the Vikings for the first time in last season s opener as a member of CLV. In the game, he recorded four tackles and a six-yard sack of Brett Favre. WR JERRICHO COTCHERY Cotchery has appeared in one game against the Vikings and it came the year he became a full-time starter in In the 12/17/06 contest in Minnesota, Cotchery caught six passes for 56 yards. WR BRAYLON EDWARDS Edwards has played against the Vikings twice in his career, both times as a member of the Browns. In his rookie season in 2005, he registered four catches for 42 yards. It is rare for a career AFC player to face an NFC team in consecutive seasons, but Edwards will accomplish the feat this season after appearing against the Vikings in last season s opener, when he caught one pass for 12 yards. WR SANTONIO HOLMES Holmes has seen action just once against the Vikings in his career, when PIT faced Minnesota on 10/25/09. 18 JETTING AROUND DURING THE OFFSEASON... Although away from the football field, Jets players were busy this offseason. From charity events to visits to award shows, members of the team traveled throughout the country. MAY: Mark Sanchez and D Brickashaw Ferguson attended the State Dinner at the Whitehouse to honor Mexican president Felipe Calderon and his wife, Margarita Zavala. Dustin Keller was honored at the United Way s Gridiron Gala at the The Waldorf=Astoria Hotel, for his work with the Jets SchoolFood Program that promotes healthy eating in New York City. It s huge. It s as great an honor as I ve ever received or ever will receive, he said at the United Way s 17th annual Gridiron Gala. For an organization that does as much as the United Way does, it s huge for me and it means a lot. Braylon Edwards hosted the Braylon Edwards Foundation Advance 100 Awards Banquet in Cleveland, OH. The Braylon Edwards Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to addressing and meeting the needs of underserved youth in the concentrated area of education. BEF s goal is to emphasize the importance of education by providing scholarships and incentives to youth who demonstrate strong commitment and effort to excelling in academics, citizenship and community volunteerism. JUNE: Mark Sanchez presented an award to Memphis at the 64th annual Tony Awards at Radio City Music Hall. Calvin Pace filmed a public-service announcement for DKMS, a group that recruits bone-marrow donors for leukemia patients. In his PSA, Pace urges people, especially minorities, to register. Minorities are under-represented in the national registry, according to DKMS. Each year, more than 140,000 people are diagnosed with a blood cancer, such as leukemia or lymphoma. Less than 30% of patients can find a match in their own family; the other 70% must search for an unrelated donor. According to the NMDP, 55% of Hispanics or Latinos in need of a life-saving transplant do not receive one and 83% of African Americans in need of a transplant to not receive one. JULY: Jerricho Cotchery preformed with the 12 Angry Mascots Scott Rogowsky at the Gotham Comedy Club in New York, NY. LaDainian Tomlinson granted the wish of nine-year old LaJerrick Keyes through the Make-A-Wish foundation. Keyes, who suffers from congenital heart disease traveled to New Jersey, where he spent the day with Tomlinson and the Jets at the team s training facility. The day began with LaJerrick being escorted to his own personal locker, where he met Tomlinson. He then watched and participated in the team practice with head coach Rex Ryan, got autographs from the players, played catch on the field with Tomlinson and even played video games with LT in the lounge. 19 JETTING AROUND THIS SEASON... The Jets look to continue there off-the-field work during the season. Here s what s has happened so far... NY Times magazine is now running its Fall for New York State ad to promote fall travel in NY. This offseason, Mark Sanchez, along with Rachel Ray, Tina Fay and Alec Baldwin, filmed a commerical for the 2010 I Love NY campaign. Sanchez s part was shot in Times Square, NY. On September 7th, members of the 2010 New York Jets Flight Crew signed copies of the 2011 Jets Flight Crew calendar at the Jets Shop in Manhattan. The event, which starts at 5 p.m. is part of the 2010 Kickoff Week. On September 9th, Tony Richardson filmed a PSA for Waste Management that will run on the video boards in New Meadowlands Stadium this season. Richardson spoke about ways to be environmentally friendly while enjoying the game. On September 28th, Jerricho Cotchery and Robert Turner presented a check for $150,000 to Public Schools Athletic League (PSAL) for support of two football teams: East Harlem Pride and KIPP NYC College Prep, as well as the continued support of the Heads Up! partnership. The money dontated to these schools allowed them to create two new football teams. On Tuesday, September 14, Dustin Keller participated in a poster shoot and public service announcement filming for SchoolFood. The poster will promote the Jets sponsored Pro Bowl trip contest encouraging and incentivizing parents and students to sign up for free and reduce priced meals. The PSAs will focus on taking advantage of the healthy meals the school cafeterias provide for all students. Beginning in 2004 the New York Jets partnered with the New York City Department of Education s SchoolFood program in an effort to encourage all New York City public school students to eat healthy and take advantage of the nutritious meals that are served throughout the schools. On Tuesday, October 5, John Conner, Jeff Cumberland, Vladimir Ducasse, Joe McKnight, Kyle Wilson and Martin Tevaseu along with representatives from the New York Jets took part in the NFL s annual Hometown Huddle, an NFL-wide day of service with United Ways across the nation, by renovating the playground at El Primer Paso, a non-profit agency serving Morris County s Hispanic preschool children. The players visited El Primer Paso to celebrate the completion of renovations to its playground. The entire project, estimated at $45,000, includes donation of a new playground structure featuring fitness-related equipment and fitness tips in English and Spanish in an effort to serve El Primer Paso s Hispanic students. The New York Jets, El Diario / La Prensa, and United Way of Morris County are exclusive sponsors of the project. Hollister Construction Services donated a handicap accessible ramp so that all students at El Primer Paso can enjoy the new play area. Mangiro Contracting donated the installation of new paver bricks. The project has been coordinated and managed by United Way of Morris County. During halftime of the Jets vs. Vikings game The Jets will commemorate the 10 year anniversary of the Monday Night Miracle when the Jets overcame a Miami lead to the the Dolphins on October 23, Vinny Tesraverde will speak on behalf of the players while owner Woody Johnson, GM Mike Tannenbaum, EVP, Business Operations Matt Higgins and EVP, Finance and Stadium Development join the 2000 team on the field. The Atlantic Health Jets Women s Organization (AHJWO) will partner with the American Cancer Society for their Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk on October 17, 2010 in Parsippany, New Jersey. From the lighting and LED signage to the massive video boards to the new plaza and tailgating options, the stadium will bleed green on Jets gamedays. Travelling to the game is easier than ever with three times the number of roadways and the New Meadowlands rail stop just outside the MetLife Gate. 23 REX RYAN Like most sons, Rex Ryan always knew he wanted to be in the family business. For the Ryan s, the family business is stifling defense. In 1985, his father, Buddy Ryan, led what is widely considered to be the best defense in NFL history. Known simply as the 85 Bears, Buddy s unit allowed 12.6 points a game. For the season, they allowed 20 touchdowns (9 rushing, 10 passing and 1 on a return). Rex has been a part of some of the NFL s best defenses himself. In 2000, he served as the defensive line coach for a Baltimore Ravens team that allowed an NFL s best 10.3 points a game. In 16 games, the 2000 Ravens allowed 18 touchdowns (5 rushing, 11 passing and 2 on returns). As a defensive coordinator in 2006, Rex matched his father s 1985 feat allowing 12.6 points a game with the Ravens. Rex s 2006 team led the NFL in 11 categories: yards per game (264.1), yards per play (4.51), rushing yard per game (75.9), rushing yards per play (3.31), interception rate (5.5%), sacks per pass attempt (11.79%), first downs per game (14.8), third-down conversions allowed (28.9%), red zone pct. SCHOOLED BY SCHOTTY Drew Brees (SD 02-05) Schottenheimer arrived in San Diego for Brees second season and quickly became a large part of his development with 2002 marking his first season as a starting quarterback. In four seasons with Schotty, Brees averaged over 3,000 yards a season, completing 62.3% of his passes and compiling an 84.7 passer rating. Chad Pennington (NYJ 06-07) Schottenheimer s first season with the Jets coincided with the return of Chad Pennington from a seasonending injury the year before. Under Schotty s direction, Pennington posted a then career-best 3,352 yards passing, completing 64.5% of his passes for an 82.6 passer rating. Pennington also took home Comeback Player of the Year honors as he keyed a Jet return to the postseason. Thomas Jones (NYJ 07-09) Jones, was considered a journeyman for the earlier part of his career, after spending his first seven seasons in the league with three different teams. In that time, he averaged yards and 4.9 touchdowns per season. In 2007, he was acquired by the Jets in an offseason trade and instantly became an integral part of Coach Schottenheimer s offense. In three seasons under Schotty, Jones averaged 1,277.7 yards rushing and 9.3 rushing touchdowns a season and set career-highs in rushing yards and rushing touchdowns last season. Mark Sanchez (NYJ 09- ) Sanchez, the Jets 2009 first-round pick, was chosen to direct Schottenheimer s offense in his rookie season and responded by setting franchise rookie records for completions and passing yards. His rookie season wasn t without its low points, but under Schotty s tutelage, Sanchez helped lead the Jets to two postseason victories, the third rookie quarterback in the AFC to accomplish that feat since WONDERFUL WORLD OF WESTHOFF No team in the league has had more kickoff return touchdowns since Mike Westhoff s tenure with the Jets began in Since then, the Jets have scored 12 times on kickoff returns. He led the Jets to the AFC Championship last season for the first time since 1998 and played his best football in the postseason, recording a 92.7 passer rating in three playoff games. 7-TIME 100 or GREATER PASSER RATING QB Mark Sanchez recorded a passer rating at Buffalo, marking the seventh game in his career that he posted a passer rating of or greater. During his career he has rushed for 12,831 yards and 141 touchdowns on 2,936 carries. The future Hall-of-Famer has also accumulated 4,037 yards and 15 touchdowns on 542 receptions. In his first four games as a Jet, Tomlinson has led all rushers in each game with totals of 62 yards, 76 yards, 70 yards and 133 yards. RB LaDainian Tomlinson earned his second start as a Jet and ran for 42 yards on the opening drive at Buffalo (10/3). 34 JETS NOTES DAVID HARRIS LEADS NFL S TOP-RANKED DEFENSE He s (Harris) one of the most complete linebackers in our league. He s an elite player who, for whatever reason, a lot of people don t appreciate. Jets Linebackers Coach Bob Sutton (New York Times, 8/1). In 2009, Harris led a Jets defense that finished first in the NFL in seven categories (yards per game, yards per play, passing yards per game, passing yards per play, first downs allowed, third-down conversions allowed and points allowed). Harris led the unit with 142 tackles and added 5.5 sacks, two interceptions, three passes defensed and two forced fumbles. In postseason play, Harris remained a dominant force as he led the team in both tackles (29) and sacks (2). He added one pass defensed and one forced fumble to his statline. Both of Harris sacks were of IND QB Peyton Manning. TACKLING MACHINE In three seasons, Harris has led the team in tackles twice and finished second with 87 tackles in 2008 despite missing five games. 36 JETS NOTES QB OF THE DEFENSE S Jim Leonhard joined the Jets as a free-agent from Baltimore in 2009 and quickly became the anchor of the NFL s top ranked defense. The defensive signal caller finished third on the team in tackles (95) and recorded 2.5 sacks, one interception, four passes defensed, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. Leonhard also contributed on special teams, recording 173 yards on 21 punt returns. The former undrafted free agent continued making big plays in the postseason when he tallied the second-most tackles on the team with 22 and added one sack, one interception, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. In the AFC Championship (1/24 at IND), Leonhard recovered a fumble forced by LB Calvin pace, leading to a 48-yard field goal by K Jay Feely. Leonhard helped put the Jets on top in the Divisional Game against San Diego (1/17 at SD) when he intercepted Chargers QB Philip Rivers at the end of the third quarter and returned the ball 11-yards to the SD 16- yard line. REX AND THE REX-PERTS The reshaping of the Jets, specifically the defense, started with the hiring of Head Coach Rex Ryan on Jan. 21, 2009, from the Baltimore Ravens. Ryan spent four seasons ( ) at the helm of the Ravens defense, considered one of the best in the NFL Ryan s first hire was Ravens OLB Coach Mike Pettine as the Jets defensive coordinator. Next came Dennis Thurman, who had left the Ravens in 2008 after six years in Baltimore, to coach the Jets defensive backs and he brought in Matt Cavanaugh, the Ravens offensive coordinator during their Super Bowl win, to coach the quarterbacks. Ryan added one more former Ravens coach to the Jets staff in 2010, when he added Mark Carrier to tutor the defensive line. Pryce rejoins former BLT defensive coordinator Rex Ryan, who he played under from For his career, Pryce has 555 tackles, 90 sacks, two interceptions, 15 passes defensed, 14 forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries. 38 JETS NOTES Special Teams Takeaways Last season, the Jets tied for second in the league with four special teams takeaways, recovering fumbles on punt returns three times and once on a kickoff return. Three of those recoveries were converted to touchdowns on the subsequent possession. KICKIN IT WITH FOLK Nick Folk, a former sixth-round pick by the Dallas Cowboys in 2007, made the Pro Bowl his rookie year after finishing fourth in the NFL in points with 131. That season he was a perfect 14-for-14 on field goals from 30 to 49 yards. No player in the league had a higher percentage of yard field goals made during Folk s first two seasons ( ). For the second time in two seasons, Eric Smith blocked a punt attempt when he got to Brandon Fields in the third quarter at MIA (9/26/10) allowing the Jets to take over possesion at the Miami 17-yard line. Smith s first blocked punt came last season when he blocked a Chris Hanson punt that Brad Smith scooped up for a fouryard touchdown at NE (11/22/10). WR/QB/RB BRAD SMITH Brad Smith s contributions to Mike Westhoff s special teams unit have ranged from solid to spectacular. The solid came from his 20 tackles on special teams last season, ranking him TRULY SPECIAL TEAMS fourth on the team. The spectacular came on his two special teams touchdowns, the team s only two special teams scores last season season. He scored the Jets first special teams touchdown when he picked up an Eric Smith blocked punt and walked in four yards for a touchdown and scored again after racing 106 yards with the second-half kickoff against the Indianapolis Colts in a must-win game in week 16.
