The Skyhawks are led by Mike Liabo, who averages 14.4 points per game. Myles Taylor leads the way with 4.7 rebounds per game. SERIES STUFF The Cougars and Skyhawks have met six times in men s basketball, including twice since SIUE made the jump to Division I. Each team has three wins in the series. This is the first meeting between the two teams as conference rivals. This is the only meeting between the two teams this year. VERSUS THE OHIO VALLEY CONFERENCE The Cougars are 3-14 against OVC opponents under Head Coach Lennox Forrester. Last year the Cougars were 0-9 against Ohio Valley teams with two losses each to Murray State, EKU, and Tennessee Tech as well as losses to Morehead State, UT Martin, and SEMO. NATIONALLY RANKED, NATIONAL TV The Jan. 21 game, when SIUE hosts Nationallyranked Murray State, has been selected for broadcast on ESPNU. Gametime has been moved to 8 p.m. to accomodate television. It will be the first Nationally-televised men s basketball game from SIUE. OPENING ACT SIUE opened its first-ever Ohio Valley Conference season, defeating Tennessee Tech Dec. 29. It was SIUE s first win over a Division I opponent this year and its first win over an OVC school since The Cougars defeated Jacksonville State Dec. 31. The Cougars will be eligible for postseason competition beginning with the season. SCHEDULE STUFF The slate features eight, and perhaps nine, games against teams that advanced to the postseason in That includes three, and possibly four, teams that played in last season s NCAA Tournament. SIUE has already faced Illinois and Hampton in the Cancun Challenge. Both were NCAA Tournament participants last season. SIUE could also face an NCAA team in the SEARS BracketBuster game in February. FROM WAY DOWNTOWN Earlier this season, SIUE connected on double digit three-pointers in three consecutive games, with 11 against Lipscomb, 10 vs. Hampton, and 11 vs. Robert Morris. Since the three-point shot was added to college basketball in 1986, that had never happened in school history. The other was a loss at Seattle Jan. 24, SIUE is 8-0 under Forrester when it scores 90 or more. DEEEE-FENSE The 45 points scored by Hannibal-LaGrange was a season low for a Cougar opponent and the fewest allowed by SIUE since a win over Missouri S&T January 4, MAKING HIS MARK Junior Mark Yelovich is 15th on the school s alltime scoring list with 959 career points. Should he reach the 1,000 point plateau, he would be just the 14th player in school history to achieve the milestone. The top 45 scorers in school history can be found on page 3. ON THE MARK Yelovich has scored in double figures in 10 of 11 games he s played in this season. He recorded his first double-double of the year, and the third of his career, with 16 points and 10 rebounds in the win over Tennessee Tech. He returned to game action Nov. 10 for the first time in nearly a year, scoring 17 points in an exhibition win over MacMurray. KEEPING UP WITH JONES Junior Jerome Jones has scored in double figures in 10 consecutive games. Jones was tabbed as the OVC s Newcomer of the Week following the 2-0 conference start for SIUE. He recorded his second double-double of the year (11 points, 11 rebounds) at SIU Carbondale. He was named to the Cancun Challenge All- Tournament Team after averaging 16.5 points per game over two games. THE NATION S BEST As of Thursday, freshman Kris Davis was still leading the NCAA in three-point percentage. He was 5 of 6 in the win over Tennessee Tech. He was also 5 of 6 from long range against Robert Morris. DAVIS-DIAPER DANDY Davis is third on the team in scoring, averaging 12.5 points a game. He has two 20-point games this year, including a career-high 25 against Robert Morris. Davis was named Freshman of the Week in the OVC following the wins over Tennessee Tech and Jacksonville State. COUNTING ON COREY Corey Wickware had a big hand in the Cougars conference season-opening win. Wickware scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out a career-high nine assists, all without a turnover. Wickware is fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 7.5 points per game. MORE COREY The senior nearly willed SIUE to a win against Lipscomb. Wickware scored all nine points in an 9-1 SIUE run during a 1:36 stretch at the end of the game. He tied his career high with four steals in the loss at SIU Carbondale. Last year he scored a career-high 26 points against South Dakota and turned in three 20-point games. MESSER MISSING Coach Forrester has announced that sophomore guard Michael Messer will miss the remainder of the season after having surgery on his right wrist Dec. 22. Messer injured the wrist during the preseason. He had played seven games, averaging 7.3 points a game. HOW MAY I ASSIST YOU After the win against Tennessee Tech, Wickware has taken over the team lead with 27 assists (2.25 per game). Davis has 24, while Kevin Stineman has 22. SHARING THE WEALTH Seven different players have turned in doubledigit scoring efforts so far this season. Yelovich, Wickware, Messer, Jones, and Davis each have multiple double-digit scoring games this season. Stineman and Derian Shaffer each have a single REFERENCING SIUE The proper usage of the University s name is Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. There are no hyphens or other words to connect University and Edwardsville. SIUE is the preferred reference to the athletics programs. TOURNAMENT TESTED This year s Cancun Challenge represented the fourth consecutive in-season tournament that SIUE has participated in. The Cougars played in the inaugural Charleston Classic in In 2009 SIUE was a part of the Drake Hy-Vee Classic and last year SIUE took part in the IBN Las Vegas Classic. The Cougars string of success in those tournaments came to an end in Cancun. After winning tournaments at Drake and Las Vegas, SIUE lost both games in Cancun. CLASS REUNION The roster features two sets of teammates who played at the same high school. Kris Davis and Derian Shaffer attended Cass Technical in Detroit, though two years apart. Kyle Heck and Zeke Schneider attended Metamora (Ill.), also two years apart. NCAA CERTIFICATION SIUE is in the final year of the four-year reclassification process to NCAA Division I. The Cougars, who had been Division II since their beginning in men s basketball during the season, will not be eligible for the NCAA Tournament during the process. Men s soccer and softball are the designated fasttrack programs for SIUE. Those two teams are eligible for the NCAA Championships. TICKETS SIUE Cougar tickets are now available online. 6 Head Coach Lennox Forrester Lennox Forrester, in his fifth season as SIUE s head coach, owns a mark. This season he will lead the Cougars through a full Ohio Valley Conference schedule for the first time. During the season, Forrester guided SIUE to its second consecutive tournament title as the Cougars defeated Longwood and the Citadel to capture the IBN Las Vegas Classic crown. SIUE finished with an overall record of 8-21, including four Division I wins. The Cougars also went 6-8 in home games during the year. All of this came while playing the season without Mark Yelovich, who was injured. The Cougars were again lauded for their success off the court. The team earned its second OVC Team Academic Achievement Award for having the highest percentage of players who were named to the OVC s Honor Roll. Forrester guided the Cougars to three Division I wins in Two of those wins came as he led the Cougars to the championship of the Drake Hy-Vee Classic in December, where the Cougars beat host Drake before downing Texas-Arlington in the Championship game. The first win came November 16, when SIUE knocked off Western Michigan at the Charleston Classic in Charleston, SC. Forrester s team also picked up wins at UMKC and SEMO. Forrester coached freshman Mark Yelovich to the secondbest season by a freshman in school history. Yelovich finished with 369 points. The Mt. Zion native led the team with an average of 13.6 a night and received Honorable Mention honors as part of the All-Independent team. Introduced as SIUE s seventh head coach on April 9, 2007, Forrester made it quickly apparent that he had all of the tools necessary to provide a successful program on the court and in the classroom. He put his mark on SIUE basketball in his first season, setting the school record for wins by a rookie head coach with 17. The Cougars record was good enough to qualify for the GLVC s post-season tournament in the school s final season in the conference. Forrester immediately set his game plan into motion during the season. He led the Cougars to becoming a top defensive team. The Cougars limited their opponents to shooting 43 percent from the field, good for second in the conference. Gray into becoming an All-GLVC second team selection. The Chicago native was tops in the conference with his 3.78 three pointers made per game. Gray became the SIUE single-season leader for three pointers with 102. He came to SIUE as one of the longest-tenured assistant coaches in the Missouri Valley Conference, most recently spending five seasons as an assistant coach at Bradley University.
