99 ATHLETICS Although we are now well into the basketball and hockey seasons, there still remain a few words to be said about football in Permit us to summarize what has been said in the autumn issue of Red and White by saying that the St. Dunstan s Senior football team have succeeded in winning the Maritime Intercollegiate championship by a decisive margin, winning five of their six games while permitting their line to be crossed on only one occasion, that in the one game they lost 3-0 to the Acadia Axemen. The final chapter in football for 1952 records a second Championship deciding game for the Saints on the Mount Allison football field. This was the game against the Halifax Wanderers for the Maritime Senior Rugby Football supremacy, of which the McCurdy Cup is emblematic. Once again the Saints backers were not disappointed but were perhaps surprised to see their team come out on the long end of an 11-0 score. Yes, they have done it! They have brought the McCurdy Cup to Prince Edward Island for its first visit. Not only have they brought honour to themselves but to their college and the Island as a whole. They are deserving of great praise. We would again like to extend congratulations and sincere thanks to coaches Mr. McAdam and Mr. Green. Six members of the S. D. U. Senior football team have been selected by football coaches, managers, sports writers and broadcasters to hold positions on the Maritime Rugby Union All-star teams. Three of these players were selected for the first team. They are Clair Callaghan, Phil Coyle, and Paul Jay. John Mullally, Ronnie McIvor, and John Reardon were selected for the second team. Congratulations men! The following is the summary of the McCurdy Cup final game. SAINTS 11 WANDEXERS 0 I n this, the final game of the season played on November 22nd, the Saints completed a very successful year

100 ~~ with a shutout over the Halifax squad. Three tries and one penalty kick made up the Saints 11 points. Early in the first half a penalty kick was awarded the Saints on the Wanderers twenty yard line. Pete Dunphy kicked the ball over the bar to start the scoring for the game. Mid-way through the half Clarence MacDonald took the ball from a two man scrum, passed to Pete Dunphy who in turn passed to Phil Coyle. Coyle set a long pass in the arms of Paul Jay who completed a beautiful play with a fifteen yards run and his second t r y in the game. Shortly afterwards Lloyd Gaudet grabbed the ball from a scrum and went down for the last try of the game. The Wanderers made several serious threats but were effectively stopped before they could cross the line by the very effective tackling of Jack Reardon, Fred Driscoll, Charlie Cheverie, Ronnie McIvor, and Allan MacDonald. INTRAMURAL FOOTBALL The Intramural football championship has been decided since the Autumn issue of Bed and White went t o press. The final game of the best of three series was won by the Junior team with a 6-0 win over the Senior team. The Juniors scored two tries to win the title for the second straight year. The line-up of the team is as follows: J. Fisher, (captain), G. Coady, C. Morrison, J. Johnson, J. Quinn, J. Dunphy, L. McQuaid, L. Clarkin, W. McIsaac, L. Murphy, C. Monaghan, G. Kilbride, F. Zakem, T. Riley, and L. Shea. BASKETBALL This year in basketball, as in football, the Saints have two teams representing the College. The first team is entered in the three team Island Basketball League, the other members being R.C.A.F. and the Abbies. They are also playing in the N.B.-P.E.I. section of the Maritime Intercollegiate Basketball League. The Second Saints are playing in the five team Abegweit House League. The other members of the league are P.W.C., Rays, Arabs, and Second Abbies. Up to the second week in February the first team has had very good success, playing a total of eight games without a loss. There are two new additions to the team this year, namely, Gus Dorais and John Taylor, both of whom are prepared to match skill with anyone in the

101 league. Their excellent rebounding and ball handling is a great asset to the squad. They are replacing Dave Kennedy and Fred Coyle who were graduated last year. All other team members are playing their regular good game and we can be sure that the team will either win or go down fighting. Jack Reardon is the playing coach of the team. The Second Saints, under the capable coaching of Bob Mooney, have so far won seven games in as many starts, all league games. They are showing a good brand of ball and promise good material for future senior teams. This is the first venture for a second team in rezdlar league play, and we are very pleased with their showing. We would like to commend Bob on his coaching. The line-up for the First team is as follows: Cyril MacIsaac, (captain), Peter Dunphy, John Reardon, Joseph Mullally, Earl MacKinnon, John Taylor, Bob Mooney, Gus Dorais and Clarence MacDonald. The line-up for Second team is as follows: Frank Slowey, Bud Lawlor, Danny Shea, Tom Kane, Charlie Roche, Peter McEwen, Bill Farmer, John Kelly, Russel McInnis, and George McGuigan. The summary of games played is as follows: FIRST TEAM SAINT 90 R. C. A. Cy McIsaac and Gus Dorais played heads-up defensive ball for the home team. SAINTS 84 JACKS 59 (Exhibition) Returning from a trip to Mt. Jack Reardon, who fouled out in the final quarter, was high scorer for the Saints with 18 points. Earl MacKinnon had to leave the game after the first half because of a head injury. Joe Mullally was Eext for Saints with 13 points. All members of the team played steady ball throughout the game. SAINTS 104 MOUNT A. 66 Played at Mount Allison University, this game was the second in intercollegiate play for the Saints this season. 5 103 A. Reardon accounted for 37 of the Saints points to make a n average of 36 points per game in Intercollegiate play this year so far. SAINTS 64 ABBIEIS 38 The St. Dunstan s team began the Island Basketball League play by defeating the Abbies in the first league game, played in the College Gym. The game was slow in the first half but the College boys showed that they had speed as well as scoring punch in the second half. Reardon led the scoring for the night with 18 points. This victory leaves unbroken their chain of seven games without a loss. With only one game to play in the regular schedule of the Abegweit House League, the Saints are well ahead. LePage was high for the losers with 15 points. 5 INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL was plenty of interest and excitement in connecthe IntramuraI league this season. AH teams showed plenty of fight and will to win. As a result we can only say that we have had a very successful series with a great deal of good bask eading intramural scorer was Lloyd Gaudet with a 140 points. The play-offs took place between the mighty Senior team, captained by John Clarkin, and the strong Grade XI1 team, captained by Bud Lawlo$. The Seniors, winners of Intramural honours for four years in the past five, y contested play-off went down to defeat in a very series. The series was a best of series and went into overtime in the last game to give Grade XI1 the championship. The scores in the games were and The winners are as follows: Bud Lawlor, Peter McEwen, Cliff Keefe, Danny Shea, Dick Deighan, and Gerard Dalton. JUVENILE BASKETBALL The juvenile teams constituted three leagues, the College juveniles, the Senior High School juveniles, and the Junior High School juveniles. All had a very successful year. The College Juvenile winners were the Sophomores and are as follows: J. Johnson, T. McGaugh, P. McCormac, B. Campbell, E. Larkin, C. Roche, and A. Ryan. The winners in the Senior High School league were team No. 12. They line up as follows: C. Sexton, R. LeCouffe, C. Kilbride, W. MacDonald, E. Murphy, L. McKenna, and A. Garner.

106 In the Junior High School league team No. 22 was winner. They are: R. Keefe, J. McCabe, P. Norman, D. Gallant, A. Morrison, J. Arsenault, A. LeClair, and L. Shepherd. HOCKEY Hockey coach, A. J. McAdam, has iced a team for the College this year which looks very promising. They have been working out in the College rink for some time and up to now have played four games. The first was an exhibition game with the B.Y.C. team from town. It featured some very good hockey for so early in the season, and the Saints were winners by a score of 6-5. The second game was played against the Montague Shmohawks at Montague and was another victory for the Saints by a score of Six goals to none were scored in the first period by the fast skating Collegians. The third game was played in the College rink against the Abbies. The Saints were winners with the score The final game played so far was the first in a two game total goal series with Mt. Allison, the winners of which will play the winners of a similar series now being played between U.N.B. and St. Thomas College for the Maritime Intercollegiate title. Mount A. defeated the Saints by a score 6-1. The following is the summary of with the Abbies. the game played SAINTS 10 ABBIES 5 The fast skating Saints took the lead 4-1 in the first period of the game with goals scored by Wedge, Gaudet, Jay and Dalton. In the second period, both teams held their own with one goal each, Michaud scoring the Saints goal. With another burst of speed in the final frame, the Saints succeeded in outscoring the Abbies 5-2 on goals by Jay, Michaud and Ready with 1, 1, and 3 goals respectively. Kennedy scored high for the losers with two goals. The following is the summary of the game. Intercollegiate SAINTS 1 MOUNT A. 6 The game was played in the Charlottetown Forum. The Saints opened the scoring for the game by one unanswered goal in the first period, scored by Rusty Callaghan. The Mounties went scoreless until the second per-

~~~ 107 ~ ~~ iod when they hit for two goals against the hard working Saints. The Saints lack of previous competition showed up in the final period of the game when the Mounties scored four unanswered goals. Wilfred Gillis played a strong game in the nets for the Saints making 25 stops against only 9 by McGowan for Mount A. INTRAMIJRAL HOCKEY The Intramural Hockey League is now under way and promises plenty of keen competition throughout the season. As yet only a few games have been played and it is hard to predict the outcome of the league. However, the Seniors and Grade XI1 look very good. Due to weather conditions, the rink committee are having trouble getting a good ice surface. JUVENILE HOCKEY As we go to press, the Juvenile leagues are just beginning to swing into action. There will be two leagues in juvenile competition, a High School league and a College league. The teams seem to be pretty well balanced and should provide good competition for those amateurs. We expect they should have a very successful season NONSENSE AVENUE A joke is not a thing but a process, a trick you play on the reader s mind. You start him off towards a plausible goal, and then by a sudden twist you land him nowhere at a l l n r just where he didn t expect to go. When I first came to this country I didn t have a nickel in my pocket-now I have a nickel in my pocket. That is one of the briefest jokes we can think of, yet shows the two parts of which all jokes are composed: the dispatch and wreckage of a train of thought.
