88 St. Dunstan s Red and White - attended C.U.A., after which he became President of the College of Great Falls in 1932 and superintendent of Catholic education for the diocese. The last years of his life were spent as pastor of St. Mary s Parish. He died on Friday, February 8 at St. James Hospital. May their souls rest in peace. RED AND WHITE EXTENDS to its readers best wishes for a happy and holy Easter. ATHLETICS _. -. _... _.. As we go to press, the basketball and hockey seasons are past the mid-way mark, and play-off time is coming into sight. Both St. Dunstan s teams, the basketball and hockey squads, have been a credit to the athletic name this University has made for itself in the past. The basketball team in particular is literally making history this year. For the first time, S. D. U. has entered a team in competition for the Maritime Senior Intercollegiate Basketball Championship. To date the team has had outstanding success, and is leading the league in the N. B.P. E. I. section of the schedule. The winning team in tns section plays off against the winning Nova Scotia team for Maritime championship honors. The Senior Saints eagerly share the credit for their success with our generous Alumni Association which has provided the College with a beautiful gymnasium this year. For the first time, an S.D.U. basketball team has been able to have regular practice sessions under the supervision of Father Walter MacGuigan. Obviously it has paid off. Spectator interest in the game has heightened considerably with the advent of intercollgeiate basketball to P. E. I.; and with the facilities now at the College, St. DunStan s will, no doubt, turn out better and better teams in the years to come.
OUR FIRST INTERCOLLEGIATE BASKETBALL TEAM J o h n Mullally (Manager), Joseph Mullally, Peter Dunphy (Captain a n d Playing Coach), Earl MacKinnon, Frederick Coyle, Cyril MacIsaac, J o h n Reardon, Clarence MacDonald, David Kennedy, Robert Mooney, Rev. W. McGuigan (Faculty Advisor).
89 In the P. E. I. Senior Basketball League, Saints are also league-leaders, and are well established favorites to win the Island championship. The hockey team will have, by the time this is p i n t ed, played off for the N.B.-P.E.I. Intercollegiate Championship against the winners of the Mt. A.-U.N.B. series. Saints automatically entered the finals when St. Thomas University dropped out of the series. We may be able to get the results of these games before press-time, but if not, they will appear in the next issue of RED AND WHITE. If we are permitted a little speculation, we feel safe in saying that before the series is well under way the Saints opponents will know they have a battle on their hands. In the City Hockey League, the Saints are making their presence known. So far, among their wins have been two games against the Rovers, generally conceded to be the strongest team in the league. The Junior Anchors seem to give the Saints tile most trouble. In four meetings the Saints only salvaged one win from them. BASKETBALL GAMES ST. F. X. 54 SAINTS 37 Feeling very bold and adventuresome, Saints took on the St. F. X. team in their first game of the season. The Xaverians, present holders of three titles, completely confounded the Saints in the first half, and outscored them by 18 points. Saints, however, led by Jack Reardon, Pete Dunphy, and Joe Mullally, came back strong and outscored the visitors in the second half. Bob Mooney of Concord, N. H., a new S.D.U. guard this year, played a terrific game for Saints, both offensively and defensively. The game was played in the S.D.U. gym. SAINTS 70 R. C. A. F. 52 Led again by Reardon, Dunphy, and Mullally who scored 28, 14, and 15 points respectively, Saints defeated the Airforce team from Summerside in an exhibition game played at the Airbase. Colton was high for the Airmen with 16 points. SAINTS 52 Y.M.C.A. 33 In the first game of the Island Basketball League, played in the S.D.U. gym, Saints trounced the Y team. As usual, Jack Reardon was the star of the game, scoring
90 22 points. Pete Dunphy scored eight points while Earl MacKinnon, another newcomer to the team, scored seven. SAINTS 43 R.C.A.F. 56 The Royal Canadian Air Force team from Summerside playing sound ball throughout, handed the Saints their first defeat of the season in the Island Basketball Leagie. Green led the Airmen to victory, scoring 22 points. Jack Reardon was high in a losing cause for the Saints with 17. Dave Kennedy had 7 for Saints. SAINTS 70 P.W.C. 24 With the whole team in on the scoring, Saints overran the inexperienced Welshmen in their second P. E. I. League game. Four of the Saints scored in the double figures. Reardon led with 19, Dunphy, Kennedy, and Cy McIsaac had 10 each, while Joe Mullally, playing a strong game, sank 9. Features of the game were Reardon s hook shots and Dave Kennedy s long shots, as well as the ballhandling of Pete Dunphy. SAINTS 95 P.W.C. 36 Saints found their shooting eyes once again in their second game against Prince of Wales. Jack Reardon alone scored enough points (36), to tie the P.W.C. team. Joe Mullally capably backed him up, scoring 14 points, while Earl MacKinnon had 12, Pete Dunphy 11, and Bob Mooney 10. The other team members were also in on the scoring, though not with so many points. Cy McIsaac and Clarence MacDonald were very stingy with rebounds. Hoyt was high for P.W.C. with 16. SAINTS 69 R.C.A.F. 52 By virtue of this win Saints tightened their grasp on first place in the Island League. They completely outplayed the visitors in the first half, by the score of 40-22, for the victory margin. Jack Reardon led the point-getters with 15. Dave Kennedy and Pete Dunphy scored 10 each. Andrews, with 13, was high for the losers. SAINTS 94 Y.M.C.A. 45 With the first string of Reardon, Dunphy, and Mullally amassing a total of 66 points, and the rest of the team ably supporting them, Saints more than doubled the point total scored against them by the Y team. Captain Peter Dunphy was high man for the Saints with 24 points, and Joe Mullally, shooting his best ever, scored 22. Jack Rear. don effortlessly sank 20 points for the Saints.
91 INTERCOLLEGIATE GAMES SAINTS 65 ST. THOMAS 43 After getting away to a slow start, (the first quarter score ended at 5-4),Saints went on to give the St. Thomas boys a severe drubbing in their first NB-PEI intercollegiate game. Jack Reardon showed the way to victory, scoring 22 points on fields goals, and 7 on foul shots for a total of 29. Bob Mooney was runner-up with 14, all scored in the second half. Bob was exceptionally consistent in his long, two-handed, set shots. Clarence MacDonald and Cy McIsaac held the fort defensively, snaring most of the rebounds. Stephens led the visitors with 13. SAINTS 48 ST. THOMAS 48 With the issue still in doubt at the 38 minute mark of the game, Saints settled down and scored four quick baskets to win their second intercollegiate game in as many starts. St. Thomas made a very determined effort, but could not cope with Saints splurge in the final seconds of the game. Clarence MacDonald, Jack Reardon, Pete Dunphy, and Joe Mullally each scored in those final anxious seconds. With only 35 seconds remaining, Joe Mullally sprained his ankle, and as a result was out of action in the U.N.B. game the following night. Pete Dunphy led in points, scoring 13. Jack Reardon had 12. SAINTS 49 U.N.B. 58 Saints met their first N.B.-P.E.I. Intercollegiate League loss at U.N.B. by nine points after having been behind by 20 points as late as the last quarter in the game. Jack Reardon was the best player on the floor offensively and defensively. He scored 22 points as well as clearing a large number of rebounds from both backboards. Stairs led the winners with 11. SAINTS 47 MT. A. 43 Coming from behind in the last quarter, Saints gave the Mounties the surprise of their lives as they defeated them by a scant four points. This win gave Saints undisputed hold on first-place in the 4-team league. Jack Reardon, playing the game of his life, really gave the crowd something to cheer about as he dribbled, faked, and scored the Saints to victory in the last few minutes of the game. He scored 21 points, 11 of them in the last quarter. Pete Dunphy was next high with nine, and Dave Kennedy had five. Baxter led the Mounties with 11.
92 LINEUP OF BASKETBALL TEAM-Pete Dunphy (Capt.), Jack Reardon, Joe Mullally, Dave Kennedy, Clarence MacDonald, Cyril McIsaac, Bob Mooney, Earl MacKinnon, Fred Coyle. HOCKEY GAMES SAINTS 2 ANCHORS 2 In a fairly rough game, the first of the newly-formed City Hockey League, the Anchors came from behind a n early two goal lead of Saints to tie the game. It ended that way. Pierre Michaud scored both of Saints goals on assists from Lloyd Gaudet. Bruce Harrigan, St. Dunstan s goalie was a standout in the game. MacDonald scored both Anchors goals. SAINTS 8 ROVERS 6 On goals scored by eight different players, which should be a sign of a well balanced team, Saints scored their first victory of the year. Paul Jay, Deighan, Gaudet, Phil Murphy, Juneau, Waite, Phil Coyle, and Ed Dalton scored goals for the Saints, while assists went to Juneau, Dalton, Coyle, Cheverie, Gaudet and Cormier. Saints scored four goals in the first period and the Rovers never recovered enough to catch them. SAINTS 1 ANCHOW 5 Ed Dalton, on a play with Paul Jay, scored the only goal the Saints could muster all night as the Anchors administered them their first defeat of the season. Saints just weren t clicking that night and the one goal that they did manage came late in the game, at the 17:oO mark in the last period. SAINTS 7 ROVERS 9 In a game that saw the two goalies beaten 16 times, the Saints didn t have quite enough steam in the last period to hold their one goal lead. Stan Deighan and Ed Dalton led the Saints attack with two goals each while Jay, McIsaac and Emile Juneau each scored one. Juneau played a good game on defense besides picking up three assists on the night s play. SAINTS 1 ANCHORS 7 For the second time in as many tries, the Anchors held the Saints to one goal, while scoring a profusion of
93 them themselves. Saints scored the first goal of the night but from then on couldn t do a thing until the last period, when they held the opposition scoreless. Anchors scored three in the first session and four in the second. The game roughened up towards the end with one minor outbreak, when a major penalty was handed out to Burke of the winners. ROVERS 5 SAINTS 6 By the end of the second period, the Saints had built up a substantial four goal lead in their third game against the Rovers. They were never overtaken, and added two more in the third, when the Rovers made their strongest bid, scoring five goals. Scoring for Saints were: Paul Jay, who shot two, and Charlie Cheverie, Stan Deighan, Bill McIsaac, and Emile Juneau. LINEUP FOR SENIOR HOCKEY TEAM: Goal, Bruce Harrigan, Ken MacDonald; defence, Dick Wedge, Emile Juneau, Howard Waite, Warren McRae; forwards, Stan Deighan, Ed Dalton, Paul Jay, Phil Coyle, Maurice Flym, Lloyd Gaudet, Phil Murphy, Bill McIsaac, Charlie Cheverie. INTRAMURAL BASKETBALL In the Intramural League this year some fine basketball was played, and many promising athletes were uncovered. The calibre of ball played in this league is surprisingly high, and as a result the game provided many thrills, with some very nice shooting and ball-handling. The league eventually developed into a battle between the Seniors and Juniors in the finals. The Junior Class retained their title by defeating the Seniors in two straight games of a best two out of three series. The Champions lineup is as follows: Clare Callaghan (Capt.), Fred Driscoll, John Mullally, Walter Sonier, Floyd McGaugh, John Clarkin. Incidentally, this intramural class team has won the championship for the last five years in a row. Patience, you other classes from Sophomore down, they graduate next year! INTRAMURAL HOCKEY As we go to press, the Intramural Hockey League is progressing rapidly to the finals. At present, the Grade XI1 team is leading the league, with the Juniors breathing down their collective necks. The Seniors are holding down third place. In the scoring race, Fred Driscoll of the Juniors is elading with 19 points, made up of 6 goals and 13 assists. Ray Delage, also of the Juniors is second with 18, while Joe Mullally is third with 11 points.
