96 St. Dunstan s Red and White there was no banquet this year. The Juniors, however, held an informal ciass dinner at the Queen Hotel, Charlottetown, at which Father Sullivan, Professor of Philosophy, was the guest of honour. Red and White wishes all its readers a blessed Easter. ATHLETICS This winter the Saints are engaged in a great deal of sporting activities both on the campus and against outside competition. The wearers of the Red and White have so far given a very good account of themselves in competing with outside squads and, to au indications, before the college year is at an end more than one trophy will be resting on College Hill. St. Dunstan s has for the past several years astonished many people by the strength of her athletic teams. In Intercolle iate circles the Saints, especially in hockey and football, have often een rated as the team to beat. O u r athletics, however, have been handicapped by the lack of necessaiy accommodations for training. A gymnasium has for many years been our greatest necessity in athletics. Last spring a drive was launched by the St. Dunstan s Alumni to provide a suitable structure and we sincerely hope that their plans will be brought to a successful conclusion. With a prqper gymnasium we feel we can produce boxing, basketball, and track and field teams on a par with any of the rest of the Maritime colleges. Not that our basketball team has not hitherto garnered many noteworthy honors. I t certainly has. It has always been a leading contender in Island Basketball activities and much credit must be given both to the members of the team and to their Coach for the competition which they provide despite the lack pf proper training facilities. If proper training quarters were available we feel sure that St. Dunstan s could produce a team which would be by far the standout in the local basketball circuit. So let s get behind our Alumni and help boost their project over the top. t
97 St. Dunstan s Red and White Before we take a look at the more current sporting activities, let us bring you up to date on football from our autumn issue. A. J. MacAdam s second football team in their final game with Prince of Wales defeated the Red and Blue squad by a score of 5-0 and by virtue of this win won the Island Intermediate Intercollegiate championship, Young Joe Malette was the hero of this game as he ran and dodged his way from his fullback position throu h the entire P.W.C. squad to score the winning try for the Saints. he members of S.D.U. second football squad, the Island Intermediate. In+rcollegiate Champions are: Backfield: J. Malette, D. Murphy, J. Cash, J. O Connor, G. MacDonald, F. McKinnon, M. Martiin, K. MacDonald, J. Dorsey, Forwards: B. Ledwell, G. McInr&i, B. Corbett, E. Pendergast, T. Pendergast, A. OBrien, J. D. McCarville, A. MacDonald. + HOCKEY The St. Dunstan s Senior hockey team entered both the Intercollegiate hockey play-offs and the City Hockey League. The team is coached by Father George MacDonald and Jackie Kaxie. The captain of the squad is Reg. Rodgers, smooth-skating centre of the Saints first line, who has also filled in on the defense. The team has much the same line-up as last year with exception of Des Burge, who played on defense for last year s squad. The new additions to the team include Gerard MacInnis, Shana Francis, Mark McQuaid, Johnny O Connor, Stan Deighen, who starred wi& last years junior team, Jerry MacQuaid, who for some years has been handicapped by a weak knee, but has returned to his dd form this year and is having a very successful season, Nazaire Crete, Jean Boivin, Phil Murphy, and Cliff Bernard. Back from last yeads squad are such stalwarts as the ever-reliable Joe Mahar, Mike Hennessey, Cart MacDonald, Kiker MacIssac, Wildor Houde, Bill Ledwell, Allison Farmer, Reg. Rodgers and Jim Ayers, The regular goalie this year is Frank Strain. Throughout most of the season the Saints have been crippled by loss of several of their best players and therefore did not accomplish what they otherwise would have done had they been at full strength. In the Intercollegiate play-offs they lost to St. Thomas in a two game total-goal series In this series the Saints were without the services of Cart MacDonald, Mike Hennessey and Jim Ayers.
98 St. Dunstan s Red and White At the completion of the City Hockey League s regular schedule, the Saints finished in a tie with the Navy for second place with 12 points. The other two teams in the League were Summerside, who finished in firat place with 13 points, and Prince of Wales, who at the end of the schedule were in last position. In the City Hockey League play-offs, the Saints eliminated Prince of Wdes in two straight games and at present are waiting to enter the finals against the Navy team who have succeeded in beating out the.all-stars from Summerside for a berth in the finals. To quote Mahar about the play-offs,, We re going to win it again this year, and in btraight games too. We hope you re right, Joe. That old Dougan trophy looks mighty nice where it is. In the City Hockey League scoring race Wildor Houde, who has one of the hardest shots in the League ended in second place with 18 goals and 8 assists for a total of 26 points. The Junior Hockey team has been organized again and is coached by A. J. MacAdam. They have been holding regular practices and in outside competition have split a return series with Morel]. Among the best prospects of this team are, on defense: Babe Martin, T. Pendergaet, Babe MacAdam, and E. Devine; forwards: J. Dorsey, H. MacDonald, P. Sinnott, B. Corhett, C. Callaghan, G. Kelly, C. Cheverie, F. Coyle, H. Martin. In the Intramural Hockey League there are eight evenly balanced teams engaged in hotly contested battles for the lea ue honors. To quote Ebbie Devine, Be sure and say that Grade $11.is well out in front and, as yet, are undefeated, He also wishes it recorded that this outstanding record is largely due to a hardhitting defenseman, E. Devine. Grade XI1 finished the league in first place and in the play-offs have eliminated the Sophomores in the semi-finals. In the other temi-final series, the Commercial team defeated a strong squad from Grade XI. In the regular league scoring Johnny OConnor, for the secund straight year, lead the league. This year he had a total of 13 points. There is also a very active Juvenile League this year with several teams competing including entries by both the C.O.T.C. and U.N.T.D. INTERCOLLEGIATE GAMES In their first game of a two-game, total-goal series with Str Thomas on Feb. 8th. the Saints lost 8-5. In this game Rodger. scored twice; MacIsaac, Mahar, and J. MacQuaid once. In theis
St. Dunstan s Red and White * second game a t Charlottetown the Red and White boys defeated the St. Thomas team 6-5; however, they lost the series We feel sure that had the Saints been a t full strength for this series the outcame would have been a different one. In the latter game the work of Joe Mahar was outstanding. Except for two minutes in the penalty box, Joe played the entire game and was the outstanding player of that night. CITY HOCKEY LEAGUE GAMES The Red and W t e squad made their debut into the City Hockey league this year by a 3-2 victory over Prince of Wales. Houde clinched the victory foi the Saints late in the third period, when he slammed the puck home on a passing play from Mahar and 1 Hennessey. In their second ame on Nov. 23, the Saints dropped a decision!?t was a hard fought game throughout; but the collegians just couldn t seem to get organized during this game. On November 30, the S.D.U. squad handed the Summerside All-stars an 8-4 setback. The Saints definitely showed their superiority over their opponents, who seemed to be suffering from lack of condition and practice. In their last game before the Christmas holidavs, on December 7, the St. Dunstan s team gave the Prince of Wales team their worst defeat of the season with a 12-3 defeat. The entire S.D.U. squad was a stand-out with the work of Hennessey on defense especially noteworthy. Houde led the individual scorers in the game with two goals and tm assists. In their third game with P.W.C. the Saints dropped a close 5-4 decision. The game was a hard-fought contest throughout with the S.D.U. squad losing out in the final minutes. On January 16, the Red and White team suffered a severe set-back at Summerside when the All-stars defeated them The Saints lost the services of Mike Hennessey, their star defenseman, early in the game and after that the Summerside boys went right in on Strain, who despite the high score against him, played well and had little chance on most of the goals. On January 28, the Saints defeated the Navy 3-2, and moved into a tie with Navy for second place in the City Hockey League. Rodgers, the S.D.U. team s captain, was high scorer for the Saints to the Navy, 8-3.
IQO St. R!umtads Red aad White 4 t h twa goals, while Farmer scored the other goal for the Red and W t e squad, At the Faturn on January 20, the Saints moved into first phee with a 5-4 wia over Summerside. Both Saint s goalies were injured in this game with Strain suffering a broken nose and Crete received a cut in the head that necessitated several s t i t c h to c h. MacIsaac and Houde both scored twice for the Saints while Cart MacDonald tallied the other goal for the Red and White squad. Crippled by the 1 0 s of Cart MaeDonald, Mike Hennessey and Jim Ayers, the boys fron College Hill dropped a 9-6 decision to the Navy squad. The Saints fought hard and were by no means out-classed, but the Ems of these players was felt ta a considemme extent especially on the deiense. This game alsa saw far the b t time M s year the appearance of A. J. MacAdaa on the defense for the Saints. Always a tower of strength, A. J. helped to baaster the SD.U. squad greatly. In their last scheduled regular game with Prince of Wales, the W e h e n debated &e Saints 6-3. The Red slnd White s uad was definitely out layed in this game by the City Cdlegians wxo played one of their rest games of the season. h their fml game with the SummersideAll-Stars, St. hnstaa s lost a heart breaking 8-7 decision. The Saints led 7-4 with Q& about ten minutes to go- in the third period. The All-stars however slammed home four goals in the time remaining to win the victory. Houde was the high scorer for the Saints with three goals. Tk Saints wound up k i p part of the sehedde witb a canvincing 10-5 victwy over the Navy. The Saints redly played p l q S g hockey in this game and established themdues as a degnite threat to retain the championship, which they won last year. Houde was &e high goabgetter of the game with four goals. Rodgers abo got two for the Saints, and Mahar one. CITY HOCKEY LEAGUE PLAY-OFFS. On March Ist, the Saints defeated the Welshmen 5-2 in tbe first game of a two-game totabgoal series. CliffBernard and Rodgers led the S.D.U. squad with two goals each. On March 3rd, the Red and Whike quad dawned the P.W.C. 6-5, and thus eliminated the Welshmen, taking the total-goal series 11-T. The goals for the Saints were scored hy Bernard, Hennessey, and MacDonald with two each.
St. Dunstan s Red and White 101 BASKETBALL The senior basketb11 team is being coached o m again by Father Walter McGuigan, who has turned out 90 many oubqnding basketball players for St. Dunstan s in the past. The %in& are entered again the in Island Physical Fitness Basketball League. The other teams in the league are Prince of Wales, Rece, Ray s Millionaires from Charlottetown, and Schurman s and the R.C.A.F. from Summerside. At present the Saints are firmly established in second place, while the R e m team is in first. Baclr from last year s squad are Clarence Roche, who is captain of the team, Willie MacDonald, Bob Noble, Owen Mullin, John Bradley, John O Connor, Billie Ready and Pete Dunphy. Two very valuable additions to the team this year are Bill Buckiess and Jack Xbardpn, both from the United States. Bill is one of the smoothest w o r k l q and effective basketball players to come to St. Dunstan s for some time. In his last four games he has averaged 22 pints per pr d n, an Agusta, Maine boy, showed that he knows his way round the basketball court, when in his last game he amassed a total of 31 points. Jack is still eligible for the Juvenile ranks, and if he continues to improve he should turn out to be nothing short of a sensation. Our one and only regret about Basketball is that once the ice surface is laid in rink, all basketball activities on the campus cease. The students therefore are unable to attend the great majority of the Saints games. However, we hope that this coditbaa will be rectified in the near future. As far as we can learn a t the time of writing &e Senior squad is once again entering the Maritime Intermediate 1ntemlleggiat.e Fhsketball play-offs. Last year the team made a very creditable showing and this year we feel very supe that they will do even better. The Red and White wishes Fr. McGuigan and his senior basketball team every success idtheir quest for inteimediate intercollegiate basketball honors. The second team has played one game since Christmas, which they dropped by a close decision ot Prince of Wales first team. A St. Dunstan s Juvenile team has defeated an All-star Juvenile squad from Charlottetown The Intramural Basketball League was one of the most successful in years. There was seven teams in the regular league with the top four teams in the play-offs. The Junior Class team emerged Victorious in the play-offs after being hard pushed by both the Grade XI1 and Grade X squads. In the intramural scoring
102 St, Dunstan s Red and White race Jack Reardon lead with 129 points, followed by Russel Arbing with 115. *The Junior Basketball team was composed of the following players: R. McCarville, R. McCloskey, M. Hennessep, A. MacIssac, T. O Connor, H. McPhee, R. McLellan. There was also a very active Juvenile basketball league with a large number of teams participating. t EXHIBITION BASKETBALL GAMES On December 2, the senior squad defeated a.nnvy team from, Chadottetown The high scorer of the game was Owen Mullin of thesaints with 17 points, followed by Joe Cullen of the Navy with. 11 and Buckless of the Saints with 10. On the 4th. of December the Red and White boys decisively defeated Prince of Wales The high scorer of the game was Buckless with 12 points, followed by Bradley and Roche with 8 each: ISLAND PHYSICAL FITNESS BASKETBALL LEAGUE GAMES On January 12, the Saints journeyed to Summerside and there defeated Schurman s basketball entry in the league Buckless of the Saints lead the scoring in the game with 16 points. The Red and White squads returned to Summerside and there on January 19, the boys fron College Hill defeated the R.C.A,F. team The high scorer for the Saints was once again Bill Buckless with 12 points, followed by Roche with 8. The Saints met their first defeat of the season on January 22, when they lost out to the Recce squad Michelson of the Recce Squad led the individual scorers in this game with 22 points. On January 26, the Saints dropped another close one to the Recce team MacLean and Mickelson were the high scorers for the Recce squad, while Bradley and Buckless lead the College team. The S.D.U. squad bounced back from these two defeats with a vengeance on January 29, when they downed the Welshmen from P.W.C High scorers for the Saints were Buckles with 23 and Roche with 21. Here we would also like to add that Bill
