Missouri State is 10-1 at home this season. The Redbirds have lost five-consecutive games against Missouri State. INJURY UPDATE: Slack Listed as Day-to-Day Illinois State senior forward Anthony Slack, who injured his right shoulder with just over six minutes remaining in the first half of the loss at Bradley (Jan. 23), is listed as day-to-day with a shoulder contusion after X-rays showed no structural damage. Slack suffered the injury with 6:14 remaining in the opening stanza, when his right shoulder collided with the north basket stanchion at Carver Arena. He is the Valley s current leader in field goal percentage (.700) and ranks second in the conference in blocked shots (32). He has started 19 games this season. Slack missed Sunday s game against Indiana State for the first time in his career. LAST TIME AGAINST UNI Illinois State held UNI to just six first-half field goals, and finished the frame on a 10-2 run to take a commanding lead at halftime. But after falling behind by 21 points (44-23) with 12:57 remaining, UNI stormed back with a 20-3 spree, and pulled within one, 47-46, after two free throws by Jared Josten. During the span, the Redbirds were 0-for-6 from the field and 0-for-6 from the foul line. ISU hit four free throws in the final 46 seconds, including two by Osiris Eldridge with just two seconds remaining, to clinch the win. It was ISU s second-consecutive game holding its opponent under 50 points. COVERING COLEMAN Preseason first-team All-MVC selection Eric Coleman struggled to find his rhythm in the game against Illinois State at Redbird Arena (Jan. 8), scoring just three points on 1-of-2 shooting from the field. He also committed a game-high five turnovers. CRASHING THE BOARDS Illinois State out-rebounded both of its foes last week, holding a 10-carom advantage (35-25) over Bradley, and a rebounding lead over Indiana State Sunday. The Redbirds have out-rebounded their opponents just four times in conference play, and in only nine overall games this season. UNI held a rebounding advantage over the Redbirds on Jan. 8 on Doug Collins Court at Redbird Arena. OFFENSIVE ODIAKOSA Dinma Odiakosa scored a team-high tying 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting against Indiana State Sunday, his largest scoring output since contributing 10 points against Creighton (Dec. 29) in the MVC opener. Odiakosa, who also had two blocks in the game, has six double-digit scoring efforts in his career. BOO! Indiana State, ELDRIDGE HITS 600 Osiris Eldridge s three-point field goal with 15:04 remaining against Indiana State Sunday gave the Redbird sophomore 600 career points. He now has 607 points scored in his career. LEADING THE WAY With his team-high 15 points against Indiana State Sunday, Osiris Eldridge took the Valley s lead in scoring (15.6 ppg) this season. Eldridge, who passed Drake s Josh Young (15.4 ppg) for the lead, paces the Redbirds in both scoring and rebounding (5.9 rpg). He has recorded 16-straight double-digit scoring outputs, and is averaging 15.2 points per MVC contest. VETERANS SHOULDER MOST OF STATISTICAL LOAD With four starters returning from and five of the team s top-six scorers, the opportunities for this season s newcomers to contribute was somewhat limited. While Emmanuel Holloway, Brandon Sampay, Dinma Odiakosa and Sead Odzic have been valuable additions to the Redbird rotation, it has been the veterans that have carried most of the statistical responsibilities. Levi Dyer, Boo Richardson, Osiris Eldridge, Anthony Slack and Dom Johnson have accounted for 71 percent (.706) of ISU s scoring, 58 percent (.576) of its rebounding, 73 percent (.725) of the Redbirds assists, 70 percent (.710) of their blocks and 69 percent (.687) of Illinois State s steals. THE INTERCHANGEABLE BACKCOURT Senior guards Dom Johnson and Boo Richardson have combined to compile a 2.26 assist/turnover ratio (138 assists, 61 turnovers) this season. Johnson and Richardson are just the second duo in the Valley this season to both rank in the top-10 in the league for assist/turnover ratio. Richardson s 3.08 ratio leads the conference, and Johnson s 1.69 mark ranks eighth overall. Missouri State s Justin Fuehrmeyer (2.00) and Spencer Laurie (1.50) rank fourth and ninth in the MVC, respectively. PACING THE VALLEY Illinois State entered this weekend s slate of Missouri Valley Conference games leading the league in field goal percentage (.464), three-point field goal percentage defense (.322) and assist/turnover ratio (1.19). The Redbirds also rank second in field goal percentage defense (.394), three-point field goal percentage (.390), defensive rebounds (23.95 rpg), blocked shots (3.65 bpg), assists (15.95 apg) and turnover margin (+2.80). Individually, Anthony Slack leads the Valley in field goal percentage (.700) and Boo Richardson s 3.08 assist/turnover ratio tops the league. WHAT PRESEASON POLL?!? When examining the Missouri Valley Conference preseason poll through nine conference games, it becomes evident that very few voters had a grasp on what would unfold in the league this season. Three of the top four teams in the poll (Southern Illinois, Bradley and Missouri State) find themselves in the bottom-five of the league, and three of the top-four teams (Drake, Illinois State and Indiana State) were picked ninth, fifth and eighth, respectively. UPCOMING VALLEY SCHEDULE Tuesday, Jan. 29 Evansville at Southern Illinois, 7:05 p.m. Missouri State at Wichita State, 8 p.m. (ESPNU) Wednesday, January 30 Illinois State at Northern Iowa, 7:05 p.m. Creighton at Drake, 7:05 p.m. Indiana State at Bradley, 7:05 p.m. Saturday, February 2 Drake at Indiana State, 6 p.m. Illinois State at Missouri State, 7:05 p.m. Bradley at Evansville, 7:05 p.m. Southern Illinois at Northern Iowa, 7:05 p.m. (MVC-TV) Wichita State at Creighton, 7:05 p.m. HOW DO YOU WANT TO WIN? Illinois State has proven that it can win in many ways through its 15 victories this season. The Redbirds have captured wins when scoring in the 40s (at Wichita State), 50s (Southern Illinois) 60s (Cincinnati, Bowling Green, Ball State and Indiana State), 70s (Missouri-St. Louis, Illinois-Chicago, Evansville and vs. Wichita State), 80s (UNC-Wilmington, Chicago State and Creighton) and 90s (Southeast Missouri State). REBOUNDING TRIO Osiris Eldridge (5.9), Anthony Slack (5.8 rpg) and Dinma Odiakosa (5.2) are all averaging more than five rebounds per game through 20 games this season. The last time Illinois State had three players average at least five rebounds per game in a single season was during the campaign, when L. Dee Murdock (6.1 rpg), Sean Riley (5.3) and LeRoy Watkins (5.5) all grabbed more than five caroms per outing. THESE GUYS CAN SHOOT IT All five of Illinois State s starters are shooting at better than a 40-percent clip from the field through 20 games this season. Anthony Slack has a league-best 70.0 shooting percentage; Osiris Eldridge is shooting 47.8 percent; Dom Johnson is shooting at a 43.5 percent clip, Levi Dyer is shooting 41.0 percent from the field this season and Dinma Odiakosa is shooting 52.5 percent from the field. 4 Redbird Basketball Game Notes

12 Tim Jankovich Five-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, two trips to the Elite Eight and a coaching pedigree that is unmatched. That is first-year Redbird head men s basketball Tim Jankovich, who became the 18th head coach at Illinois State University March 20, Considered one of the most sought after assistant coaches in the country, Jankovich has helped produce great success in his 24 years as a Division I coach under some of the brightest minds in NCAA basketball history. The Gary, Ind., native spent the past five years under current Kansas head coach Bill Self. Jankovich was an assistant coach under Self for one season at Illinois, before spending the last four campaigns as his top assistant at Kansas. In all, Jankovich has helped coach teams that have advanced to the postseason in seven of the last eight years. In Jankovich s four years at Kansas, the Jayhawks compiled a combined (.784) record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament in all four campaigns. This past season ( ), Kansas went 33-5, and advanced to the Elite Eight for the second time in four years. The Jayhawks finished the season ranked No. 2 in both the final Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top-25 Coaches polls. The Jayhawks entered the season with a young and inexperienced squad. But Kansas tied Texas for the league title with a 13-3 conference record, and captured the Big 12 Tournament championship for the second-consecutive season. The Jayhawks went 22-4 in their final 26 games, including winning 12 of their final 13 Big 12 regular-season contests. Kansas led the nation in field goal percentage defense in , holding its opponents to just a 37 percent clip from the field. Kansas finished the campaign tied for first place in the Big 12 with a 12-4 conference record, en route to a 23-7 overall mark. The Jayhawks started the season 14-0, and weren t defeated by a conference foe until Feb. 14, 2005, when they dropped a one-point decision at Texas Tech. Kansas finished the season ranked No. 12 in the AP poll, and 15th in the coaches poll. In Jankovich s first year under Self at Kansas ( ), the Jayhawks went 24-9, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight, before narrowly missing a Final Four berth following an overtime loss to Georgia Tech. Kansas finished the season ranked ninth in the coaches poll. Overall, the Jayhawks never finished a season ranked lower than No. 16 nationally during Jankovich s tenure. In Jankovich s one year at Illinois ( ), the Illini finished 25-7, won the Big Ten Tournament championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament s second round. Illinois finished the season ranked No. 11 in the final AP Head Coach First season at Illinois State poll. In the past five years alone, Jankovich has coached in 12 NCAA Tournament games. Over the past 24 years, Jankovich has played a key role in recruiting and player development. He was also responsible for attracting and coaching some of the most accomplished recruiting classes in college basketball. Jankovich has coached 18 current or former NBA players during his tenure. In addition to working under Self, Jankovich has served as an assistant coach for the likes of Eddie Sutton, Jack Hartman, Lon Kruger, Boyd Grant, Gene Iba, Bob Weltlich and former Illinois State head coach Kevin Stallings. Other than Kansas and Illinois, his list of employers includes Vanderbilt, Texas, Oklahoma State and Colorado State. In addition, Jankovich served as a head coach for four years at the University of North Texas and two seasons at Hutchinson Community College. In his first season as a head coach at UNT, Jankovich took over a squad that had posted a 5-22 mark and tallied the second-biggest turnaround in the nation that year, advancing his team just one win away from an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. In his first three seasons, Jankovich recorded the second-best record in school history and took his team to the Southland Conference Tournament championship two times. In his fourth season, the Eagles moved to the Big West Conference. Jankovich also guided Hutchinson Community College, home of the National Junior College Athletic Association National Tournament, to back-to-back 20-win campaigns, posting a record and national rankings both seasons. At Vanderbilt, he played a key role in turning around a struggling program and helped lead the Commodores to two postseason appearances in three years. The core of Jankovich s recruited players at Vandy later advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 in In his short time at Illinois State, Jankovich has already made huge strides in emphasizing the importance of recruiting within the state of Illinois and in the Chicago metropolitan area. His staff includes Anthony Beane, who was an assistant at Illinois State from , and was part of the Redbirds last postseason appearance; former Northern Illinois head coach Rob Judson, an 18-year state of Illinois coaching veteran, and Paris Parham, a wellrespected high school coach in Chicago s Public League. One of the winningest players in Kansas State history, Jankovich was a four-year starter at point guard (one year at Washington State and three years for legendary coach Jack Hartman at K-State). In each of his three seasons, the Wildcats were ranked in the top-20 and posted threestraight NCAA Tournament appearances. A 1981 Elite Eight appearance and a 1982 Sweet 16 berth highlighted his playing career. Jankovich played in a total of nine NCAA Tournament games in college. A three-time academic all-american and honorable mention All-Big Eight player, Jankovich left Kansas State with nine top-10 season and career marks, including ranking first in free throw percentage (.917) and eighth in career field goal percentage (.510). In addition, he holds the Big Eight Tournament record for single-game assists (14). Jankovich graduated cum laude in 1982 with a 3.63 grade-point-average and received his master s degree in radio/television from Kansas State in He and his wife, Cindy, have a son, Michael, 8. The family resides in Bloomington.
