This Week: Washington women s basketball will play the second of its two preseason exhibition games hosting Seattle Pacific, Tuesday, Nov. 6, at 7 p.m. at Bank of America Arena. Admission is free for the exhibition contest. The new era under first-year head coach Tia Jackson got off to a running start as the Huskies downed Love & Basketball, 84-59, in Jackson s head coaching debut, Saturday. The Huskies make their official season debut at Kansas State, Saturday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. CT/3 p.m. PT. Live Video Streaming: Tuesday s exhibition game can be seen live and free of charge on the Dawg Channel All-Access at GoHuskies.com. Radio Coverage: With the exception of the two exhibition contests, all Husky women s basketball games can be heard live on the radio at KKNW 1150 AM. Steve Sandmeyer, in his ninth season as the voice of UW women s hoops, will call the play-by-play. Former Husky Elise (Niemela) Woodward will join Sandmeyer as the color commentator for home broadcasts. Huskies Shine In Jackson s Exhibition Coaching Debut: Sophomore guard Sami Whitcomb scored a game-high 21 points and junior forward Heidi McNeill added a double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Huskies over Love & Basketball, 84-59, in the team s first exhibition contest, Sat., Nov. 3. Whitcomb and McNeill led five players in double-figure scoring as first-year head coach Tia Jackson got her first unofficial victory. Senior point guard Emily Florence tallied 12 points, nine rebounds and four assists, while reserve freshman post players Kali Bennett and Mackenzie Argens scored 10 and 11 points, respectively. Despite getting off to a slow start offensively, the Huskies dominated their opponent made up of former Southern California area collegiate players on the boards, Mc- Neill scored 10 of her 14 points and had a double-double by halftime, while Argens scored all 11 of her points in the first half. The Huskies, bit early by the injury bug, played just eight players in the game. Florence, Whitcomb, freshman Katelan Redmon (8 pts/6 reb.), McNeill and freshman Jess McCormack (2 pts/2 reb.) made up Jackson s first starting five. McCormack, New Zealand National Team player and a member of UW s highly-touted incoming freshman class, got into early foul trouble and played just 15 minutes.

First-year head coach Tia Jackson is at the helm, having been appointed the eighth head coach in UW women s hoops history April 6, Jackson, who came to Washington after assistant coaching stints at Duke, UCLA, Stanford and Virginia Commonwealth, inherits a squad that features seven returning letterwinners to go along with a Top-10 nationally ranked recruiting class. Looking to lead the way for Jackson s Huskies will be senior point guard Emily Florence and forward/center Andrea Plouffe. Florence has started 80 straight games at the point, and last year led the Pac-10 in steals and was second in assist-turnover ratio. Plouffe, who has battled her own share of injuries in her career, will look to power UW s front line. She is UW s top returning scorer with 10.0 points per game last year. Also returning are junior forward Heidi McNeill and junior guard Michelle Augustavo. McNeill figures to play a substantial role with the squad this year and Augustavo, who sat out last year due to NCAA transfer rules, will look to make a strong UW debut this season after playing her first two seasons at the University of San Diego. Sophomore guard Sami Whitcomb is another player who should see more playing time this season, while her fellow sophomores - forward/center Laura McLellan and guard Sara Mosiman - are currently sidelined by injuries but will be looked upon to provide some valuable floor time. Headlining UW s nationally-ranked incoming recruiting class is 6-5 New Zealand National Team Player Jess McCormack. Scouting Seattle Pacific: The Falcons, an NCAA Division II team, are led by third-year head coach Julie van Beek who has guided SPU to a record during her tenure. Seattle Pacific returns three starters - including former Husky Jackie Hollands - from its squad that went 20-9 overall and won the Great Northwest Athletic Conference title (12-4). SPU has made 11 straight appearances to the NCAA Div. II Tournament, advancing to the second round last year before falling to Chico State (75-60). Leading the Falcons this year will be Hollands, a senior guard who player her freshman year at UW before transferring to SPU. Hollands, an All-GNAC selection, averaged 11.0 points and 2.1 steals last year. The other returning starters are senior Beth Christensen (6.0 ppg, 4.9 apg) and junior Kelsey Hill (12.2 ppg, 8.5 rpg). Banks To Redshirt: Senior guard Dominique Banks will redshirt the season, Jackson announced at media day Oct. 30. Banks missed the first 11 games last year after having surgery to repair stress fractures in both of her legs in September of She came back midway through the year and earned her way back into the starting lineup, averaging 4.4 points, but is still not 100 percent. Youth Movement: The Huskies 14-player roster includes nine underclassmen - three sophomores and six freshmen. But where the Huskies might lack in experience they will make up for in talent. UW s talented sophomore trio of guards Sami Whitcomb and Sara Mosiman, and forward/center Laura McLellan - are joined by a six-woman recruiting class that was ranked No. 8 in the nation by Blue Star Basketball when the group was announced last fall. Included in that class are two players ranked among HoopGurlz.com s Top-100 recruits - No. 36 Kali Bennett (C, 6-5, Ventura, Calif.) and No. 83 Candice Nichols (5-10, G, Carson, Calif.). Joining Bennett and Nichols are Mackenzie Argens (F/C, 6-3, Seattle), Jess McCormack (F/C, 6-5, Auckland, New Zealand), Sarah Morton (G, 5-8, Tacoma), and Katelan Redmon (G/F, 6-1, Spokane, Wash.). The Schedule: UW will once again be challenged by a formidable schedule in , a slate that features seven NCAA Tournament teams from last year highlighted by home contests with Big-10 perennial powers Ohio State and Purdue. The Huskies non-conference schedule features road contests at 2007 NCAA participants Gonzaga (first round) and Boise State (first round), as well as trips to Kansas State and the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. On the home docket are the previously mentioned games with Ohio State (first round) and Elite Eight team Purdue, in addition to the annual Husky Classic and match-ups with UC Irvine and Pepperdine. The always competitive Pac-10 schedule is highlighted by contests with NCAA Elite Eight squad Arizona State, and 2007 NCAA qualifiers Stanford (second round) and California (first). Huskies On Television: Six Washington women s basketball games will be televised during the season including five to a national audience. Four Husky contests

Washington s non-conference showdown with perennial power Ohio State in Seattle on Sunday, Dec. 16, highlights the national television docket. The game will tip-off at 4 p.m. PT, a change from the Huskies original schedule. The two other home games included in the TV schedule will be UW s matchups with USC, Sunday, Jan. 13, at 3 p.m. PT and Washington State, Sunday, Feb. 3 at 1 p.m. PT. The Huskies contest at UCLA on Sunday, Feb. 10, will appear on ESPN2, with a tip-off set for 1:30 p.m. Washington s road game at Arizona State Sunday, Feb. 24 will be televised on FSN at 11:30 a.m./12:30 p.m. MT. Washington s road contest at Washington State on Friday, Jan. 4, at 7:30 p.m. will be seen locally on FSN Northwest. UW Tabbed No. 50 In CBSSports.com Preseason Top-64: The Huskies garnered a No. 50 billing according to CBSSports.com s Preseason Top-64 for Defending NCAA Champion Tennessee was picked No. 1, followed by Connecticut, Rutgers, Maryland and Oklahoma. In addition to Washington, Pac-10 teams that were recognized were No. 7 Stanford, No. 11 Cal, No. 19 Arizona State, No. 31 USC and No. 45 Oregon. UW Picked To Finish Fifth, Sixth In Preseason Pac-10 Polls: Washington was projected to finish fifth and sixth in both Pac-10 Preseason Polls, the conference office announced in the last week. Stanford (17) Arizona State (1) California USC Washington UCLA Oregon Arizona Oregon State Washington State 21 Dawg Bites: The Huskies will play their first five games on the road before finally making their home debut Nov. 23 versus Idaho in the first round of the Husky Classic UW will open the year at Kansas State (Nov. 10), move on to Gonzaga (Nov. 12) and then head to Honolulu, Hawaii for the Waikiki Beach Marriott Classic (Nov ) where UW will take on host Hawaii, Northern Arizona and UC Davis the Huskies are coming off two straight NCAA Tournament appearances and two-straight fourth-place finishes in the Pac-10 UW enters the season with an 11-game non-conference home winning streak UW was 6-0 at home against non-conference opponents in after going 5-0 in Senior point guard Emily Florence needs 33 assists and 22 steals to crack the Top-10 on both UW career lists she enters her senior season with 283 assists and 161 steals four members of Washington s 2007 graduating class are continuing their basketball careers professionally overseas this year: Jill Bell (Spain), Cameo Hicks (Switzerland), Maggie O Hara (Denmark) and Breanne Watson (Finland) the Huskies have a little bit of international flair on their current roster with Canadian Andrea Plouffe and New Zealand native Jess McCormack. Husky Coaching Staff: First-year head coach Tia Jackson, who spent 11 years in the assistant coaching ranks before coming to Seattle, will be assisted by three coaches who have a combined 38 years of collegiate coaching experience. Former Husky Loree Payne is a familiar face to UW fans. Payne returns to coach at her alma mater after serving three years as an assistant at Portland and one year at Northwest Nazarene. Katie Abrahamson-Henderson joins Jackson s staff after spending the last five years as the head coach at Missouri State where she guided the Lady Bears to a overall record. Abrahamson-Henderson also spent assistant coaching tenures at Michigan State, Iowa State, Maine and Duquesne. Fred Applin rounds out the Husky staff. Applin came to Washington after spending the last three seasons as an assistant at Wake Forest. Applin has also been an assistant coach at Texas, Houston and UNC-Chapel Hill, as well as serving as head coach at Hampton for two seasons ( ).
