3 S E A S O N O U T L O O K NOW IT ALL STARTS CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE USHERS IN A NEW ERA OF WOMEN S BASKETBALL, SPEARHEADED BY ITS NEW HEAD COACH AND AN EXPERIENCED GROUP OF MATADORS. DON T ASK CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE WOMEN S basketball head coach Jason Flowers about the past. He understands that there have been some long seasons for the Matadors, but there s nothing he can do about it. He s too focused on the present, the current, his first Division I head coaching job to worry about what has happened at CSUN. He s more concnerend with what will happen. That s his charge for the season and beyond and it all starts one game at a time. This is the start of a journey and I expect us to be entertaining on offense and to really get after at it on defense, Flowers said. It's an exciting time for Northridge basketball as we put everything together and get into the full swing of things. THE COACHES In setting up the transistion, Coach Flowers understood that hiring and implementing a staff that shared his values and outlook would be key to Northridge s futures both in and beyond. He's been more than happy with the work of his new group of assistants: Bryan Camacho, Lindsey Foster and Christine Collins-Kiernan. Foster was a colleague of Flowers at UC RIverside, helping the team advance to the NCAA and WNIT Tournaments. She is also among the top players in school history at Northern Arizona University. Camacho and Collins-Kiernan are veteran high school coaches who acheived numerous milestones at the prep ranks. Camacho led Bellarmine-Jefferson High School to an impressive mark over the last four seasons, including the 2009 California state championship. Additionally, his teams won three league titles, earned two trips to the California State Tournament and captured a CIF Division V-A Southern Section Championship Collins-Kiernan worked as an Assistant Coach at Mater Dei High School, helping the Monarchs win three-straight league titles, the California state championship and earn the recognition as the No. 1 team in the nation by USA Today and Cal Hi Sports. THE MATADORS On offense, Northridge figures to feature junior Jasmine Erving, a 6-3 forward who earned All-Big West Second Team honors in after averaging 13.6 points and 5.5 rebounds in her sophomore season. She added 34 blocked shots and enters eager to pick-up where she left off a season ago. Erving set numerous new career highs a year ago, scoring 31 points at Cal Poly on Feb. 20 to earn Big West Conference Player of the Week honors. Overall, she led the Matadors in scoring on 10 different occasions and in rebounding eight times a year ago. Erving already ranks eighth in school history in blocks and is approaching several other milestones for her career. Joining Erving up front on the Matador attack will be sophomore Violet Alama. A 6-1 forward from Honolulu, Alama ended her freshman season with a 15-point, 17-rebound performance at Pacific that set new career highs in both categories. In fact, she grabbed 10 offensive boards against the Tigers, the second-most in the school s Division I history. In all, Alama averaged 4.1 points and 5.3 rebounds for the season, numbers that increased to 5.6 points and 5.8 rebounds in Big West play. She also had 26 blocked shots, 18 steals and 20 assists in her freshman season. Another player expected to contribute to the frontline is sophomore Felicia Walker. In 17 games a year ago, Walker averaged 1.6 points and 1.1 rebounds. She did record seven blocked shots and had a season-high seven rebounds against Pacific on Jan. 2. The Matadors will feature several enticing wing WOMEN S BASKETBALL MEDIA GUIDE 3

4 NO LOOKING IT ALL STARTS NOW BACK players that should go a long way toward setting a new tone for CSUN basketball. Senior Analee Viena- Lota, junior Bridgette Conejo and sophomore Amanda Thomson will all be counted upon for their ability to score and for their defense all season. Viena-Lota enters her final season at CSUN determined to go out with a bang. She flashed glimpses of that at the end of the season, finishing the year with back-to-back double-doubles. Overall, she averaged a career-high 7.9 points and 5.4 rebounds for the season. She also showed a more multi-dimensional game last season, dishing out a career-hight 50 assists and swiping 37 steals. Finally, she finished third on the team with 17 3-pointers and 32.7 percent clip from beyond the arc. Conejo averaged an even 10.0 points in her sophomore season and was one of the team s more reliable 3-point shooters. She connected on 32-of-89 attempts from beyond the arc, good for a 36 percent rate. She tied a school record when she hit seven 3-pointers in the Matadors game against finished 14-of-17 from the free throw line, the thirdmost attempts and completions in the school s Division I history. She also knocked down 10 3-pointers and had 26 steals a season ago. She finished fifth on the team with 30 assists and had her best game of the year in a eight-point, sixrebound performance in the Matadors win at Cal State Fullerton. McIntyre arrived to the team late a year ago, posting averages of 0.4 points and 0.2 rebounds. Now fully engrained into the plans, she is expected to see an increased role in The team is also bolstered by the return of two players who lost the season due to injury. Juniors Bianca Davies and Charise Hall return to add front-court depth to the Matadors. Davies has appeared in 42 games over her career and Hall is a rugged defender who can intimidate opponents. Thomson saw extensive playing time in her first season with the Matadors, averaging 4.7 points and 1.4 rebounds. She ended the year by scoring a season-high 17 points and seven field goals at Pacific on Mar. 6. Another one of the Matadors long-range threats, Thomson finished with 15 3-pointers and an even 30 percent clip from deep in her freshman season. 34 N NORTHRIDGE THIS IS CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHERE, WHY? California State University, Northridge exists to help students realize their educational goals. The University's first priority is to promote the welfare and intellectual progress of students. Part of the 23-campus California State University system, Cal State Northridge is the only public university located in Los Angeles' San Fernando Valley (If incorporated, the area with 1.7 million residents would be the fifth largest city in the United States). Northridge celebrated its 40th anniversary in , having educated more than 165,000 alumni. The main Northridge campus covers 356 acres and has about four million square feet of facilities, including about two dozen major buildings and more than 100 in total. Campus physical assets are valued at more than $613 million. The physical heart of the campus is the Oviatt Library with more than one million volumes. Cal State Northridge also operates a satellite campus in adjoining Ventura County. Cal State Northridge, accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, is one of the largest higher education institutions in California and is the third-largest public university (2005 enrollment) in L.A. County after UCLA and Long Beach State. CSUN enrolls just over 33,000 students in Fall 2003, with about 1,900 faculty and a staff of nearly 2,100. CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE HISTORY In fall 1956, the San Fernando Valley campus of the Los Angeles State College of Applied Arts and Sciences (later Cal State Los Angeles) was established on the present Northridge site. Soon after, the state Legislature passed Assembly Bill 971, which provided for the campus to separate from its parent college. On July 1, 1958, the founding date of the present university, the institution became San Fernando Valley State College, with about 3,300 students and 104 faculty. On June 1, 1972, the college was renamed California State University, Northridge, by action of the state Legislature and the Board of Trustees of the California State University. NORTHRIDGE NOTABLES CSUN is headed toward becoming one of the most modern university campuses in the country. Six new buildings worth more than $70 million each with state-of-the-art facilities have finished or are under construction, including new wings for the Oviatt Library and a new Arts, Media and Communication Building. Renovations have also just been completed to the University Student Union. Cal State Northridge has small average class sizes, ranging from about 29 for lecture sections and 19 for laboratory sections. In the recent student survey, small class size was one of the campus' features most appreciated by students, with 84 percent indicating satisfaction. THE COLLEGES AT CAL STATE NORTHRIDGE Arts, Media and Communication Business Administration and Economics Education Engineering and Computer Science Extended Learning Health and Human Development Humanities Science and Mathematics Social and Behavioral Sciences Cal State Northridge ranked first among 529 master's level universities in its number of graduates who went on to earn Ph.Ds in the social sciences and psychology, according to a recent National Science Foundation report. Northridge has been a leader in involving its students in community service learning, where academic learning is merged with meaningful community work. The university launched a Center for Community Service Learning that has helped create more than 40 new courses since its inception in CSUN students have taught computer skills to pregnant and at-risk teens and helped establish an after school children's literature/literacy program. Cal State Northridge is the leading public university in California in preparing students to obtain teaching credentials. The university had 1,000 single or multiple subject teaching credential documents issued to students/graduates during , more than any other Cal State or University of California campus, according to data from the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Students at Cal State Northridge constitute a veritable United Nations, with enrollment coming from more than 70 foreign countries. The university consistently ranks in the top 25 for master's level universities based on the size of its foreign student population. Northridge is a university committed to using advanced technology to aid in the education process. Virtually all CSUN students have campusprovided accounts, as do most faculty and staff. The campus also has an inventory of more than 5,000 computers, including about 2,000 spread among 100 labs. The university also offers about two dozen online academic courses. Cal State Northridge, one of the first mainstream universities to accept deaf students in the 1960s, now hosts one of the largest deaf student populations among U.S. universities. Nearly 300 deaf and hard-of-hearing students receive sign language interpreting, real-time captioning and other special services each year through the university's renowned National Center on Deafness (NCOD). The Center on Disabilities at Northridge, specializing in technology and its impact on those with disabilities, annually hosts the Technology and Persons with Disabilities Conference, the largest event of its kind drawing thousands of participants from around the world.
