SLU registered a record 524 assists two years ago, followed by 573 last season and 597 in the campaign. NOT MANY NAILBITERS THIS SEASON Last year, Saint Louis played 16 games almost half of its 34-game total that were decided by a single-digit margin, including three WNIT games in which the combined victory margin was seven points. So far, this season has been drastically different. The Billikens have played just nine games that were decided by fewer than 10 points. However, close games have been more common for Saint Louis recently. Six of the Bills' last 12 games have been single-digit decisions, and SLU is 4-2 in those contests. BILLIKENS SET DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS RECORD Saint Louis has a school-record 19 double-digit wins this year, including the three largest victory margins in the Atlantic 10 Conference (Lipscomb by 45, SIUE by 41, UMass by 40).

4 SAINT LOUIS GAME NOTES IUPUI BILLIKENS PRODUCE HISTORIC DEFENSIVE STREAK When SLU held George Mason, VCU and St. Bonaventure to 50, 48 and 49 points, respectively, it was the first time in program history the Billikens yielded 50 or fewer points to three consecutive conference opponents. DOUBLE-DOUBLES A FREQUENT OCCURRENCE Saint Louis produced at least one double-double in 16 of its first 32 games. The Billikens have 19 total double-doubles this season. SLU has registered two double-doubles three times. Sadie Stipanovich and Jackie Kemph accomplished the feat vs. Loyola Marymount, Washington State and Richmond. BILLIKENS GO ON TORRID 3-POINT SHOOTING RUN Earlier this season, the Billikens enjoyed a four-game stretch in which they made at least 10 3-point field goals in each contest. SLU was 10-of-24 vs. Missouri, 11-of-20 vs. Lipscomb, 12-of-25 vs. Davidson and 12-of-27 vs. George Mason in successive outings. The 12 treys vs. Davidson and George Mason are one shy of the school record. PILING UP THE POINTS The Billikens have scored in the 80s or higher nine times this season after doing so just five times all of last year. SLU scored 70 or more points 19 times during the season. Through the A-10 Championship this year, the Bills scored in the 70s or higher in 18 games. SAINT LOUIS RECORD BOOK ASSAULTED AT DAVIDSON SLU enjoyed a record-setting day in a victory at Davidson. The Billikens established school marks for points, field goals (43), field goal percentage (43-of-71,.606) and assists (33). BILLIKENS OWN SEVERAL A-10 SEASON BESTS The Billikens have the A-10's best performance in six categories. SLU's 106 points, 43 field goals made,.606 field goal percentage (43-of-71) and 33 assists vs. Davidson are league highs, as are the Bills' 37 free throw attempts vs. Loyola Marymount and 45-point victory margin vs. Lipscomb. The Billikens also own the A-10's second-best performance in four of those categories field goal percentage (30-of-50,.600 vs. Morgan State), assists (31 vs. UMass), free throw attempts (36 vs. Lipscomb) and victory margin (41 vs. SIUE). In addition, SLU's 28 free throws made vs. Loyola Marymount are No. 2 in the league. Jackie Kemph's 15 free throws made vs. Loyola Marymount are the most by an A-10 player this season. BILLIKENS CONVERTING SECOND-HALF FREE THROWS Coming off a year in which they shot a school-record 76.3 percent from the free throw line, the Billikens are successful at the stripe again this season with a 74.9-percent success rate. This year's performance is due largely to strong second-half foul shooting. SLU is connecting on 71.9 percent (146-of-203) in the first half but improves to 76.5 percent (287-of-375) in the second half. BILLIKENS ROUTINELY HAVE MORE "A's" THAN "TO's" Saint Louis is the A-10 leader and the third-best team in the nation in assist-turnover ratio (1.53:1). The Billikens registered more assists than turnovers in 24 of their first 32 games. SLU tallied 20 or more assists in 14 of the first 32 games, including a school-record 33 vs. Davidson and 31 vs. UMass in the A-10 Championship first round. The Billikens' guards combined for 483 assists and just 248 turnovers in the first 32 games, a 1.95:1 ratio. Jenny Vliet doesn't have enough assists to qualify for the A-10 overall or national assist-turnover ratio rankings, but she leads the team with a 3.38:1 mark (88 assists, 26 turnovers). continued SLU has 11 games with a single-digit turnover total, including a school-record four vs. Fordham in the A-10 Championship quarterfinals. The Billikens had seven vs. Richmond, St. Bonaventure and George Mason; eight vs. La Salle, Massachusetts, Southeast Missouri State and Loyola Marymount; and nine vs. Massachusetts, St. Bonaventure and Bradley. Since committing 19 miscues in the season opener at UC Irvine, the Billikens are averaging just 11.9 turnovers. BIG VICTORY MARGINS IN EARLY SEASON Each of Saint Louis' first eight games was decided by a double-digit margin. That hadn't happened since when the Billikens' first 14 contests had a spread of 10 or more points, a school record. The eight-game streak to begin a season was the third longest in program history. STARTING FIVE STEADY AGAIN The Billikens put the same starting five on the floor in all 34 games of the campaign. So far this season, head coach Lisa Stone is following the same path. Saint Louis' starting five including Sadie Stipanovich, Jackie Kemph and Jenny Vliet, all of whom started every game last year has been the same in all 32 contests this season. Olivia Jakubicek and Jordyn Frantz replaced graduates Jamesia Price and Denisha Womack in the starting lineup. Saint Louis' five starters are the team's top five scorers. It's believed that the Billikens are the only Division I team to both start the same five in every game and have those players occupy the team's top five scoring positions. BILLIKENS COLLECT WEEKLY AWARDS Jackie Kemph earned Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Week accolades from the league office Nov. 14 and Jan. 30. 12 WHAT S A BILLIKEN? The Billiken was born Oct. 8, 1908, when Kansas City art teacher and illustrator Florence Pretz patented a design for an elflike creature with pixie ears, a mischievous smile and a tuft of hair on his pointed head. Reportedly, the image came to her in a dream. Although it didn t appear on the actual patent, some believe Pretz found the Billiken name in a fanciful work entitled, Mr. Moon: A Song of the Little People, by Canadian poets Bliss Carman and Richard Hovey. Within a short time, Pretz sold her patented image to the Billiken Company of Chicago. Initially manufactured as a bank and statuette, and later as a doll, this good luck charm soon became a national craze. By 1911, the Billiken s likeness adorned everything from marshmallow candies to hood ornaments. In his heyday, the Billiken enjoyed worldwide fame. Artisans in Alaska began carving his image into ivory, and in Japan, he appeared in shrines, amusement parks and even a movie. Like many other fads, the Billiken might have faded into obscurity if it were not for Saint Louis University law student John Bender, who also happened to be the coach of SLU s football team during the height of Billikenmania. One story claims that nearby drugstore owner Billy Gunn called Bender a Billiken when the coach walked into his establishment one day. Supposedly, legendary sportswriter William O Connor was within earshot of the remark and took up the moniker not only for Bender but also for SLU s sports teams. Another tale claims O Connor himself dubbed the coach a Billiken after a particularly good practice left Bender beaming with a big smile. After practice, Bender s fellow law student Charles Z. McNamara, a local cartoonist, sketched Bender as a Billiken, posted it in Gunn s drugstore window and tabbed the football team Bender s Billikens. Yet another yarn reports that the druggist asked McNamara to decorate his store window the night before a homecoming game. Supposedly, McNamara drew a Billiken, a popular good luck charm, causing one of his fellow students to exclaim, That looks like coach Bender! Whatever the case, O Connor is generally credited for popularizing the name throughout the city, but one fact flies in the face of this legend and lore. O Connor did not join the St. Louis Post-Dispatch until Nov. 26, 1911, one full month after the newspaper first mentioned Bender s Billikens. Regardless of how the story is told or whether his mysterious origins are ever finally resolved, the Billiken remains a good luck charm for Saint Louis University s sports teams and always brings smiles to the faces of SLU fans. Legend has it that the Billiken has three kinds of luck good, better and best. Buying a Billiken gives the buyer good luck. To have one given to you is better luck. The best luck comes if the Billiken is stolen.
