4 HURRICANES UP TO #3 IN COLLEGE FOOTBALL PLAYOFF RANKINGS The Miami Hurricanes moved up four spots in the latest College Football Playoff rankings released on Nov. 14, jumping from No. 7 into their first position ever inside the "top four" at No. 3. Miami's four-spot leap matches the biggest jump by any team into the top four since the CFP's inception in 2014, matching Alabama's four-spot jump in 2014 and Oklahoma's similar leap in Miami debuted at No. 10 in the initial College Football Playoff rankings of 2017 released on Oct. 31 and, after a dominant win over Virginia Tech, jumped to No. 7 in the Nov. 7 rankings. The next CFP rankings will be revealed on ESPN's College Football Playoff: Top 25 on Tues., Nov. 21. WHO S ROCKING THE TURNOVER CHAIN? The now famous University of Miami turnover chain made its debut Sept. 2 vs. Bethune-Cookman, when sophomore DB Malek Young was rewarded for an interception with an oversized sparkling U chain on the sidelines at Hard Rock Stadium. 16 different players have worn "the chain." UM has forced 27 turnovers through 10 games; the Canes forced 19 turnovers all of last season. Three Hurricanes wore the chain, designed by famed Miami icon "A.J. the Jeweler," against Virginia: DB Jaquan Johnson, DB Michael Jackson, and RB Travis Homer, who recovered a fumbled punt. The 16 Hurricanes who have "officially" worn the chain: Homer (fumble recovery), Johnson (four interceptions, fumble recovery), Jackson (four interceptions, fumble recovery), DB Sheldrick Redwine (fumble recovery, two interceptions), DL RJ McIntosh (fumble recovery), DL Ryan Fines (fumble recovery), LB Michael Pinckney (interception), DL Pat Bethel (fumble recovery), DB Dee Delaney (interception), LB Shaquille Quarterman (fumble recovery), DL Demetrius Jackson (interception), LB Charles Perry (interception), DB Trajan Bandy (interception), DL Jonathan Garvin (two fumble recoveries) and DB Malek Young (two interceptions). Miami has forced 19 turnovers over the past five games, more than 88 FBS teams have all season. Beginning with a game against Syracuse on Oct. 21, Miami forced four turnovers in four straight games - the first time time a team has done it against four Power-5 opponents since at least JAQUAN ONE OF JUST FOUR D PLAYERS TABBED AS POY SEMIFINALISTS Junior DB Jaquan Johnson has been one of the nation's top defensive backs this year, and was one of just four defensive players named a semifinalist for the Walter Camp Player of the Year last week. Johnson has been named ACC Defensive of the Back three weeks in a row (Nov. 6, Nov. 13, Nov. 20), becoming the first Hurricane to ever be honored by the ACC in three consecutive weeks. The last ACC player to earn honors in three straight weeks was Deshaun Watson of Clemson in Johnson leads UM in tackles with 75 and is also tied for the Miami lead in interceptions with four. BALLHAWKING IN THE SECONDARY The Hurricanes rank first in the ACC and second nationally with an average turnover margin of per game (+16 for the season), and a big reason is standout play in the Hurricanes secondary. Miami's 27 gained turnovers are the third-most nationally and its 17 interceptions are second-most. The Hurricanes, who rank first in the ACC in both above categories, forced just 19 turnovers in DB Trajan Bandy's pick-six vs. Notre Dame on Nov. 11 was Miami's first defensive score of the season and the first interception returned for a TD by a Hurricane since Tyriq McCord vs. Cincinnati in DB Jaquan Johnson followed up Bandy's pick-six with his own against Virginia (Nov. 18). A week after matching Syracuse QB Eric Dungey's entire season interception total in a single game (four), Miami had three more interceptions on Oct. 28 in a win over North Carolina. DB Michael Jackson leads UM with four interceptions - the most since Artie Burns had six in UM's four interceptions Oct. 21 were the most by the defense in a single game since Sept. 21, BRAXTON BALLING IN FINAL SEASON AT THE U - ON THE FIELD & OFF Senior WR Braxton Berrios has been Miami s top offensive threat through Miami's 10-0 start. He leads all Hurricanes pass catchers with 41 catches, 522 yards and eight receiving touchdowns. Berrios' stat line in 2017 exceeds his combined stat line from the past two seasons ( ), when he totaled three starts, 24 catches, 264 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns in 24 games. Berrios' 522 yards and eight TDs in 2017 are more than his other three years combined (496, five). Berrios was named a finalist for the Campbell Trophy, considered the "Academic Heisman," in early November. He holds a 3.96 GPA as a double major in entrepreneurship and finance at The U. Last time out vs. Virginia (Nov. 18), Berrios totaled 38 receiving yards on three catches. Berrios posted his first and only career 100-yard receiving game vs. Toledo on Sept. 23. He hauled in five passes, including a career-long 55-yard reception, for 105 yards with one receiving score. The Raleigh, N.C., native was a CBS Sports Midseason All-American as an "all-purpose player." 4 LIFE IN THE ACC 2017 STANDINGS ATLANTIC DIVISION Team Conf. He hit his 75th last time out vs. Virginia (Nov. 18). Badgley, who was named a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, moved past Hurricane great Carlos Huerta ( ), who had 73 in his career. Badgley 390 career points are the second-most in UM history; Huerta (397) owns the UM record. HERNDON KEEPING #TIGHTENDU TRADITION ALIVE The Hurricanes were expecting a big year from senior tight end Christopher Herndon IV, and he has delivered, including a team-high four catches for 30 yards against Notre Dame (Nov. 11). Herndon was one of eight semifinalists for the Mackey Award, honoring the nation's top tight end. Herndon has already set career marks in catches (37), receiving yards (436) and receiving touchdowns (four) in 10 games, besting his previous highs set as a junior in 2016 (28, 334, 2). Herndon recorded career-high totals of 10 catches and 96 yards with one TD vs. Syracuse on Oct. 21. The Georgia native, who has started all 10 games this year, ranks second on the team with 37 receptions for 436 yards. He was named ACC Receiver of the Week on Oct. 23 for his game vs. Cuse. In 42 career games, Herndon has made 25 career starts and totaled 83 receptions, 1,004 yards and seven touchdowns. He started 12 of 13 games in 2016, when he set career marks in every category. Herndon's 2016 tight end partner, David Njoku, was selected in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft by the Cleveland Browns. Njoku has 20 catches for 211 receiving yards with three TDs this season. Njoku (2017) became the fifth Miami tight end drafted in the first round since 2000, joining Bubba Franks (2000), Jeremy Shockey (2002), Kellen Winslow (2004) and Greg Olsen (2007). "TOOLBOX TRENT" MAKING PLAYS IN FINAL SEASON AT THE U Senior DL Trent Harris has been among Miami's top defensive playmakers in his final season at UM. UM ranks first in in the nation in team sacks (3.80) and fourth in tackles for loss per game (9.0). Last time out vs. Virginia on Nov. 18, the Hurricanes tied a season high with 11 tackles for loss and had its second-most sacks (five) of the year. Senior DL Trent Harris had 2.5 TFLs and two sacks. Miami finished the 2016 season fifth in the nation in tackles for loss per game (8.3) and ranked 22nd in sacks per game (2.85). The Hurricanes finished 2016 with 108 tackles for loss and 38 sacks. Facing what many considered the best offensive lines in the nation, Miami totaled nine tackles for loss (29 yards) and five sacks against Notre Dame on Nov. 11. Senior DL Trent Harris had two sacks. The Hurricanes posted season-high marks of six sacks & 11 tackles for loss vs. Duke on Sept. 29. Following the 2016 season, Kuligowski was promoted to Assistant Head Coach/Defensive LIne. MOST TACKLES FOR LOSS SINCE HOMER DAZZLES IN FIRST SIX GAMES AS STARTING RUNNING BACK RB Travis Homer delivered a dominant 170-yard rushing game in the first start of his career vs. Georgia Tech (Oct. 14) - no back has had more rushing yards in his first UM start since at least The Palm Beach native became the eighth Miami tailback to have recorded a 100-yard game in his first career start since 2000, and the fourth to do it in an Atlantic Coast Conference game. Homer's performance was just the 22nd game of 170 yards or more by a Miami back since Homer had 96 rushing yards and a 19-yard rushing touchdown last time out vs Virginia (Nov. 18). Homer had the third 100-yard rushing game of his career vs. Notre Dame (Nov. 11) with 146 yards. Homer assumed starting duties when RB Mark Walton suffered a season-ending injury Oct. 7. CONSISTENT CANES Of the 22 field positions, 11 Hurricanes have been starters in every game this season: QB Malik Rosier, TE Christopher Herndon IV, WR Braxton Berrios, LT Kc McDermott, LG Trevor Darling, C Tyler Gauthier, RT Tyree St. Louis, DL Chad Thomas, DL RJ McIntosh, LB Shaquille Quarterman and DB Jaquan Johnson. DL Kendrick Norton has started 10 of 11 games on the defensive line. McDermott s 31-game consecutive start streak is the longest on the team. Sophomore LB Shaquille Quarterman has started every game of his Hurricanes career (23). Returnees OL Kc McDermott, OL Mark Walton, RJ McIntosh, Kendrick Norton, Shaquille Quarterman and Michael Pinckney were the only Miami players to start in every game in Freshman WR Mike Harley has four starts and grad transfer newcomer DB Dee Delaney has started four of 10 games. 7 RICHT ONE OF THE NATION S TOP COACHES Mark Richt is one of the winningest active coaches in FBS college football with 164 career wins. CAREER VICTORIES AS FBS COACH - ACTIVE LEADERS 1. Nick Saban, Alabama Bill Snyder, Kansas State Urban Meyer, Ohio State Mark Richt, Miami Gary Patterson, TCU 158 ELEVEN HURRICANES HAVE BEEN AMONG THOSE HONORED BY ACC Miami has had 11 different players recognized by the ACC with weekly honors: along with Trent Harris (Co-Defensive Lineman), Jaquan Johnson was named ACC Defensive Back of the Week for the third straight week on Nov. 20. They join Braxton Berrios (Receiver, Oct. 9), Darrell Langham (Co-Receiver, Oct. 16), Michael Badgley (Specialist, Oct. 16), Christopher Herndon (Receiver, Oct. 23), Michael Pinckney (Linebacker, Oct. 23), RJ McIntosh (Defensive Lineman, Oct. 30), Navaughn Donaldson (Offensive Lineman, Nov 13) and Zach McCloud (Co-Linebacker, Nov. 13). FRESHMAN PHENOM: THOMAS SHOWCASING ABILITY IN FIRST YEAR Over three games from Oct , no player was a bigger contributor on offense than WR Jeff Thomas, who exploded for 240 yards and two touchdowns over those three games. Thomas has been on the receiving end of the two longest pass plays of the season: a 70-yard reception against Georgia Tech on Oct. 14 and a 78-yard touchdown vs. North Carolina on Oct. 28. The former four-star recruit and Under Armour All-America Game MVP had just four catches for nine receiving yards in his first four games but caught multiple passes in his next four games. Thomas was rewarded for his play by making his first career start at North Carolina (Oct. 28). SO CLOSE Miami s four losses in 2016 came by a combined 32 points (8.0 points per game average). Two of Miami s four losses came by three points or fewer (vs. FSU, 20-19, at Notre Dame, 30-27). Only one loss last season came by more than one score - a defeat at Virginia Tech on Oct. 20. On the flip side, 15 of Miami's 19 wins under Mark Richt have come by 14 points or more. ROAD REGULARS Miami opened ACC play on the road for the eighth time in the past nine seasons (at Duke, Sept. 29) and with back-to-back road games for the fourth time ever and first time since Since becoming head coach, Mark Richt has led Miami to a 8-2 record in games played outside of Hard Rock Stadium, including UM's first bowl win since 2006 (2016 Russell Athletic Bowl). Since joining the conference in 2004, the Hurricanes are now 8-6 all-time in ACC openers. KEEPING IT IN THE "U FAMILY" As is often the case at the University of Miami, a number of Canes have family ties to 'The U' Four Hurricanes had fathers who suited up in orange and green: sophomore TE Michael Irvin II (father is Michael) II, DL Scott Patchan (Matt), DL Pat Bethel (Randy) & P Zach Feagles (Jeff). WR Evidence Njoku is the younger brother of David, who was taken by Cleveland in the 2017 NFL Draft, while OL Kc McDermott is the younger brother of OL Shane McDermott ( ). OFFENSIVE LINE NAMED TO JOE MOORE AWARD HONOR ROLL Miami s offensive line was one of 22 named to the Joe Moore Award Honor Roll on Oct. 9, honoring the men up front who displays qualities of the best offensive lines in the country. The Hurricanes' offensive line has consisted of four starters who have started every game - LT Kc McDermott, LG Trevor Darling, C Tyler Gauthier and RT Tyree St. Louis. HOMER JUST 151 YARDS SHY OF TOPPING 1,000 RUSHING YARDS IN 2017 Despite not making his first start until the fifth game of the season, RB Travis Homer is on the verge of reaching the 1,000-yard rushing plateau in his first season as Hurricanes' starting running back. After rushing for 96 yards last time out against Virginia, Homer has 849 yards on 130 carries. He ranks fifth in the ACC in rushing yards per game (84.9) but did not start the first four games of the season. If Homer rushes for 1,000, Miami will have four straight seasons with a 1,000-yard rusher for the first time ever; Duke Johnson (2014), Joe Yearby (2015) and Mark Walton (2016) each reached 1,000. Homer would become just the 11th back in Miami history to total 1,000 yards if he eclipses the mark. SERIES HISTORY MIAMI LEADS, YEAR UM OPP SITE W/L SCORE Pittsburgh, Pa. W Miami L Pittsburgh, Pa. 8 McINTOSH, NORTON AMONG TOP DEFENSIVE TACKLE TANDEMS Miami's defense ranks first nationally in team sacks and fourth nationally in team tackles for loss, and a big part of that equation is junior defensive linemen RJ McIntosh and Kendrick Norton. McIntosh has started all 10 games for Miami and has totaled an impressive 9.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, six pass breakups and one fumble recovery. His 42 tackles are fifth-most on the defense. Norton, who has started nine of 10 games, has 22 tackles with 6.5 tackles for loss and 2.0 sacks. WEATHERING A STORM ON THE WAY TO THE ACC CHAMPIONSHIP Miami's season was rocked in the early going by Hurricane Irma, forcing the Canes to abruptly change the course of their season, including the cancellation of one game and two reschedulings. The Hurricanes Sept. 9 game at Arkansas State was cancelled, and a Sept. 16 game at Florida State was postponed and rescheduled for Oct. 7, when both teams shared a mutual bye week. Miami's scheduled Oct. 12 game against Georgia Tech on a Thursday night at Hard Rock Stadium was pushed back two days to Oct. 14 due to the long Hurricane Irma-induced layoff. The Hurricanes were dismissed on Sept. 7, regathered as a team at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando on Sept. 15 and returned to Miami for a Sept. 23 game against Toledo. ALMOST PERFECT 10 Teams rarely beat Miami when scoring 10-or-fewer points. The Hurricanes are in their last 166 games when holding opponents to 10 points-or-fewer, after winning 41-8 vs. Notre Dame on Nov. 11, 2017 and vs. Virginia Tech on Nov. 4, That run goes back to Oct. 1, a season that began with Miami holding its first two opponents to exactly 10 points apiece and still lost both of those games. The only 10 points allowed-or-fewer losses: Nov. 8, 2003 to Tennessee (10-6) & Sept. 5, 2005 to Florida State (10-7). Head coach Mark Richt and defensive coordinator Manny Diaz have helped Miami hold opponents to 10 or fewer points in five games since the staff arrived prior to the 2016 season. WELCOME BACK, AHMMON After missing the first two games of 2017 with a hamstring injury suffered during training camp, WR Ahmmon Richards returned vs. Duke on Sept. 29, starting and totaling 106 receiving yards. It was the fifth career 100-yard receiving game for Richards, who added a 49-yard TD in the win. Last time out, Richards started and totaled four catches for 51 yards and a TD vs. Virginia (Nov. 18). Richards returned against Syracuse (Oct. 21), starting and finishing with six catches for 99 yards. DIAZ, DEFENSE DELIVER DOMINANT DISPLAY VS. YELLOW JACKETS Georgia Tech entered the Sat., Oct. 14 matchup at Hard Rock Stadium ranked sixth nationwide in total defense (260 yards per game) and 20th nationwide in total offense (479.3 yards per game). The Hurricanes outgained the Yellow Jackets in the win, marking just the ninth time Georgia Tech has been outgained by 200 or more yards since the 2004 season. DC Manny Diaz & Miami held GT to 226 rushing yards below its average entering the game. OFFENSE LOSES WALTON TO SEASON-ENDING INJURY VS. NOLES The only returning running back in the ACC who posted a 1,000-yard rushing season in 2016, RB Mark Walton was off to a sizzling start to 2017 before suffering an ankle injury at Florida State. Walton started and recorded 25 rushing yards against the Noles before what coach Mark Richt deemed a season-ending right ankle injury - Walton was carted off the field in Tallahassee. Walton was averaging rushing yards per game through four games and 7.6 yards per carry. WALTON AMONG TOP BACKS IN MIAMI S STORIED HISTORY AT RB With 1,995 career rush yards, Walton now sits in 11th place all-time at Miami; he entered the season No. 21 in all-time rush yards. His eight 100-yard rush games are tied for eighth-most. With 25 yards against Florida State in his final game of 2017, Walton moved from No. 12 to No. 11 in the record books, leapfrogging UM legend Frank Gore ( ), who totaled 1,975 career yards. Walton opened 2017 with a bang, recording 148 yards and two rushing touchdowns in Week 1. He followed that up with the seventh 200-yard rushing game ever in Week 2 vs. Toledo. Walton now has 28 career TDs in 30 career games and is tied for fifth in rushing TDs at Miami (26). In 2016, Walton became just the 10th running back in Miami history to rush for over 1,000 yards. The impressive feat marked the 11th 1,000-yard rushing season in Miami s and the third straight year the Hurricanes had a 1,000-yard rusher; Duke Johnson rushed for 1,652 yards in 2014 while Joe Yearby finished with 1,002 yards on the ground in TEAM CAPTAINS GAME 1: BETHUNE-COOKMAN -K #15 Michael Badgley -OL #52 Kc McDermott -DL #9 Chad Thomas -WR #8 Braxton Berrios GAME 2: TOLEDO -K #15 Michael Badgley -OL #73 Trevor Darling -DL #33 Trent Harris -RB #1 Mark Walton GAME 3: DUKE -K #15 Michael Badgley -OL #73 Trevor Darling -DL #33 Trent Harris -RB #1 Mark Walton GAME 4: FLORIDA STATE -OL #52 Kc McDermott -TE #23 Christopher Herndon -DL #9 Chad Thomas -K #15 Michael Badgley GAME 5: GEORGIA TECH -DL #31 Demetrius Jackson -RB #24 Travis Homer -WR #8 Braxton Berrios -DB #4 Jaquan Johnson GAME 6: SYRACUSE -WR #81 Darrell Langham -DL #7 Kendrick Norton -DB #4 Jaquan Johnson -K #15 Michael Badgley GAME 7: NORTH CAROLINA -QB #12 Malik Rosier -DL #80 RJ McIntosh -DB #28 Michael Jackson -RB #24 Travis Homer GAME 8: VIRGINIA TECH -DB #4 Jaquan Johnson -DL #9 Chad Thomas -TE #23 Christopher Herndon IV -K #15 Michael Badgley GAME 9: NOTRE DAME -DB #4 Jaquan Johnson -DL #9 Chad Thomas -WR #8 Braxton Berrios -K #15 Michael Badgley GAME 10: VIRGINIA -DL #33 Trent Harris -DL #9 Chad Thomas -WR #8 Braxton Berrios -OL #52 Kc McDermott

The Hurricanes ranked in the top 25 nationally in four different defensive categories: scoring defense (No. 12/18.5), team sacks (No. 22/2.85), tackles for loss (No. 5/8.3) and total defense (No. 20/345.5). Miami held 11 of its 13 opponents under their 2016 scoring average, including West Virginia in the Russell Athletic Bowl on Dec. 28. Miami started and finished games strong in 2016, as it outscored opponents by a combined count in the first and fourth quarters of games. In 2016, nine Miami Hurricanes had at least 5.0 tackles for loss on defense. In 2015, just four players finished the season (13 games) with at least 5.0 tackles for loss. OFFENSIVE EXPLOSION Miami s offensive unit has proven to be an explosive unit over the previous four years. The Hurricanes 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 offensive units all rank among Miami s top 10 for total yards. Head coach Mark Richt resumed responsibilities as play caller after joining as head coach in The 2016 Hurricanes offensive attack ranked third in program history for most total yards. Miami also scored 446 points last year - a figure that ranks fourth in school history. RICHARDS A RECORD RECEIVER IN FRESHMAN SEASON Wide receiver Ahmmon Richards led the Hurricanes in 2016 with 934 yards receiving - the most ever by a freshman wide receiver at Miami and the sixth-most by any Hurricane ever. Richards 934 yards broke Michael Irvin s 31-year-old record of 840, set in Richards yards per reception were tops among all FBS freshman nationally. Richards yards per reception ranked 18th nationally overall, while his 934 receiving yards led all FBS freshmen nationally. RICHT RECOGNIZES MIAMI PAST, INVITES HONORARY CAPTAINS After his return to his alma mater, head coach Mark Richt instituted honorary captains - all of whom are Miami Football alumni - to speak to the team on the Fridays before home games in-season. In 2017, the list of honorary captain list has included all-time Miami greats like QB George Mira, DB Bennie Blades, WR Reggie Wayne, DB Ed Reed and DB Antrel Rolle, among others. A full list of honorary captains since the program's inception is listed to the right of this page. Richt's invitation to honorary captains further extends his dedication to his alma mater and the alumni who have passed through the program; in August of 2017, Richt hosted his first "The U Network" event dedicated to helping Miami Football alumni find jobs in their post-football lives. The job fair held on-campus, and added networking, has helped at least four players find work. Richt and his wife Katharyn donated $1 million to the Carol Soffer Football Indoor Practice Facility. 12 MARK RICHT HEAD COACH SECOND SEASON AT MIAMI (17TH OVERALL) (.749) Hurricane alumnus Mark Richt was named the 24th head football coach at The University of Miami on Dec. 4, 2015, by Director of Athletics Blake James. Richt s 2016 season in Coral Gables was one to remember as he helped guide Miami to its first bowl victory in 10 years, as the Hurricanes captured the 2016 Russell Athletic Bowl, defeating nationally-ranked West Virginia Miami had 10 players earned ACSMA All-ACC honors in 2016, while quarterback Brad Kaaya became Miami s all-time passing yards leader under his tutelage.
