Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on RSN with Evan Lepler (play by play), Takeo Spikes (color) and Lyndsay Rowley (sideline reporter) on the call. Joe Zagacki (pxp) and Don Bailey, Jr. (color) are in the 560 WQAM radio booth for their 16th season together, while Josh Darrow will handle sideline. Jose Chamby Campos (pxp) and Jose Martinez (color) are broadcasting on 990AM ESPN Deportes. THE SERIES Miami won the only previous matchup in the history of the series, 24-14, at the Miami Orange Bowl on Nov. 21, The Hurricanes finished that season 12-0 and won their second of five national championships in program history. The Hurricanes are slated for a return trip to the Glass Bowl in Toledo, Ohio to face the Rockets during the 2018 season. THE TEAM Miami won its 2017 season opener, 41-13, over Bethune-Cookman at Hard Rock Stadium on Sept. 2. UM was paced by 148 rushing yards from junior RB Mark Walton and a three-touchdown game from redshirt junior QB Malik Rosier, who was making his first home start. Despite remaining idle for the second straight weekend, Miami moved up in both polls to #14 from #17 (AP) and #15 (coaches). For the first time since 2010, Miami entered the season ranked by both the Associated Press (#18) and in the Amway Coaches Poll (#18). The Hurricanes were picked to win the ACC s Coastal Division in a media poll at the 2017 ACC Football Kickoff in Charlotte, N.C., in late July. THE OPPONENT Toledo is under the direction of second-year head coach Jason Candle, who has compiled a 13-4 mark since taking over as interim head coach prior to the Rockets 2015 bowl game. In his first full season at the helm in 2016, Toledo finished 9-4 and second in the MAC West. The Rockets were picked to win the MAC West Division and the MAC Championship Game in a media poll released prior to the 2017 season. Toledo received 21 of 24 possible votes as league champions, and 22 of 24 votes to win the MAC West Division Entering their fourth game of the season, the Rockets currently rank 16th in scoring offense (46.0 points per game) nationwide. Quarterback Logan Woodside ranks 11th in NCAA passing yards (1,004) and tied for 11th nationwide with eight passing touchdowns. THE COACH Miami is in its second season under the direction of head coach Mark Richt; in his first season at the helm, the Hurricanes finished with a 9-4 record and won their first bowl game since 2006 with a victory over West Virginia in the Russell Athletic Bowl. Miami has never had another game cancelled in its history due to weather, and only four other postponements in modern history: UCLA in 1998, Temple in 1999, Florida State in 2004 and Georgia Tech in MIAMI WINS 2017 OPENER, The Hurricanes kicked off the 2017 season with a win over Bethune- Cookman at Hard Rock Stadium on Sept. 2, Miami has not lost a home opener since a streak of 11 wins in home openers, including every single opener at Hard Rock Stadium. In the modern era of Hurricanes Football (since 1979), Miami has opened the season at home 18 times and is 16-2 in those games - its only losses coming in 1985 and Miami is 30-9 in regular season openers dating to the start of the 1979 season. WALTON, ROSIER SHINE IN VICTORY Junior RB Mark Walton led all ACC running backs with 148 rushing yards in Week 1; the next-highest total was 124 by KirVonte Benson of Georgia Tech. Walton added two rushing touchdowns, moving him into a tie for eighth place in Miami history with 25 career rushing scores. He is just 10 behind the program s all-time leader, Stephen McGuire (35). Walton s 100-yard rushing performance was the seventh of his career. 4 DEFENSE LOOKING TO TAKE THE NEXT STEP IN 2017 Miami shined on defense in 2016, its first season under the direction of defensive coordinator Manny Diaz, eliciting nostalgia from longtime Hurricanes fans with a standout unit. At the conclusion of the 2016 season, Miami was ranked No. 20 nationally in total defense (up from No. 69 the previous season), No. 9 in yards per play (No. 86 in 2015), No. 12 in scoring defense (No. 77 in 2015), No. 5 in tackles for loss (No. 105 in 2015), No. 22 in team sacks (No. 70 in 2015) and tied for No. 8 in defensive touchdowns allowed (No. 61 in 2015). ROSIER TO MAKE SECOND HOME START OF CAREER Redshirt junior quarterback Malik Rosier was announced as Miami s starting quarterback by head coach Mark Richt on Aug. 22, during the final week of Hurricanes fall camp. Rosier will be making just the third start of his career when he lines up under center against Toledo on Sept. 23; his only other home start came in the season-opening win on Sept. 2. Rosier, who replaced Miami all-time passing yards leader Brad Kaaya, finished 20-for-29 for 272 yards and two touchdowns in his only road start, a victory over Duke in October Rosier won a four-man quarterback race during training camp, besting redshirt sophomore Evan Shirreffs - who was named backup QB - and freshmen N Kosi Perry and Cade Weldon. RICHARDS A RECORD RECEIVER IN FRESHMAN SEASON Though he misesd the 2017 season opener with a hamstring injury, in his freshman season of 2016, wide receiver Ahmmon Richards led the Hurricanes with 934 yards receiving - the most ever by a freshman wide receiver at Miami and a figure that ranks as the sixth-most receiving yards by any Hurricanes player all-time in a single season. Richards 934 yards broke Michael Irvin s 31-year-old record of 840, set in Richards yards per reception were tops among all FBS freshman nationally. 7 MARK RICHT HEAD COACH SECOND SEASON AT MIAMI (17TH OVERALL) (.738) Hurricane alumnus Mark Richt was named the 24th head football coach at The University of Miami on Dec. 4, 2015, by Director of Athletics Blake James. Richt s 2016 season in Coral Gables was one to remember as he helped guide Miami to its first bowl victory in 10 years, as the Hurricanes captured the 2016 Russell Athletic Bowl, defeating nationally-ranked West Virginia Miami had 10 players earned ACSMA All-ACC honors in 2016, while quarterback Brad Kaaya became Miami s all-time passing yards leader under his tutelage. Freshman wide receiver Ahmmon Richards broke the 31-year-old freshman receiving record at Miami originally set by Michael Irvin, while sophomore running back Mark Walton became the 11th 1,000-yard rusher in program history. In addition, four Hurricanes earned freshman All-America honors under Richt s watchful eye. Richt, born in Omaha, Neb., and raised in Boca Raton, Fla., returned to his alma mater after leading the University of Georgia football program for the previous 15 years. He compiled a overall record and an mark in Southeastern Conference play, won two SEC championships, six SEC East titles and nine bowl games and finished the season in the Associated Press Top-10 rankings seven times. Richt s.736 winning percentage ranks fifth-best among active FBS head coaches. Richt is one of only seven head coaches in SEC history to record four straight 10- win seasons ( ). During his tenure on the sidelines in Athens, 77 of Richt s players were selected in the NFL Draft over the last 14 years, including eight chosen in the 2002 and 2013 NFL Drafts the most Georgia players ever selected in a single year.
