HOME, SWEET HOME University Arena has produced quite the homecourt advantage for WMU since Hawkins became head coach. The Broncos are at home under Hawkins, in his tenth year at the helm, including a mark against non-conference opponents. WMU is in MAC home games, including undefeated home marks in and MAC WEST SUCCESS Western Michigan has had unprecedented success in the MAC West division under head coach Steve Hawkins tenure, finishing either first or second in eight of his nine years as head coach of the program. The season marks the first time under Hawkins in which the Broncos did not finish first or second in the division. MICHIGAN MAC CHAMPIONS Western Michigan has won the Michigan MAC Championship outright four times since after defeating EMU, in the season. Western Michigan finished a perfect 4-0 against its in-state rivals last season. WMU won the award outright in its first two years of existence in 2006 and 2007 and shared the award in The Broncos claimed the title again in Using the criteria in place for the award, WMU would have also won outright in 2004 and Central Michigan claimed the trophy this year, only the second time in its existence that the Broncos did not win it. HAWK FLIES HIGH Hawkins won his 100th career game at WMU at CMU (1/11/09) to become only the third Bronco head coach to reach that number, joining Buck Read (345 wins) and Bob Donewald (152). He won his 150th career game at Oakland (12/23/11) to become just the third coach in program history to win 150 games, and passed Donewald earlier this season. Hawkins has a.500 record or better against 7 of the 11 MAC opponents on the schedule, and against 10 of the 14 opponents he has faced on this year s schedule. HAWKINS PASSES DONEWALD The Broncos Dec. 23, 2011 win at Oakland was the 150th win for Steve Hawkins as head coach of the Broncos. He is one of just three coaches in program history to win 150 games as a Bronco, joining Bob Donewald and Herbert Buck Read. Against Toledo, Hawkins won his 153rd career game, surpassing Bob Donewald for second place on the career wins list. Hawkins achieved the feat in just nine seasons, as compared to 11 seasons for Donewald. The program s all-time wins leader is Read, who finished with 345 career wins. THREE C-NOTES FOR COACH HAWK Earlier this season, head coach Steve Hawkins earned his 300th career head-coaching victory against USF on November 18, as the Broncos defeated the Bulls His 300 career wins included 163 victories as head coach of the Broncos, and 137 while head coach at Quincy. THIRD TIME AROUND FOR BATES The Western Michigan men s basketball program welcomed back a familiar face when veteran coach Clayton Bates was hired to fill the final vacancy on the coaching staff. Bates served as an assistant coach for the Broncos two other times in his career; he was part of the staff from as an assistant coach, at first alongside coach Steve Hawkins and later as an assistant on Hawkins staff. Bates left for a brief period and returned to be an assistant on the staff before heading off to become an assistant at Wright State. A member of the USC Upstate (formerly USC- Spartanburg) Athletics Hall of Fame, Holland has served as an assistant coach at a number of programs across the spectrum of college basketball, and even spent some time as a scout for the Washington Wizards. PRIDE OF THE BRONCOS Entering his second season as a full-time assistant coach, David Kool ranks as one of the great Bronco studentathletes in any athletic program. Kool holds many of the Broncos career scoring records, including career scoring; he is the only player in program history to score more than 2,000 points in his career. WESTERN HEROES Western Michigan owns the best conference winning percentage in the MAC West division over the last five seasons; they have gone in conference games since the start of the season for a.550 winning percentage. No other MAC West program can boast a winning record in that time span. HAWKINS VS. THE SUMMIT LEAGUE Western Michigan and the Big South Conference have not tangled much in the past, but the Broncos few experiences with the conference have been mostly positive. The Broncos enter the game against the Panthers with a 4-1 all-time record against the conference, including a 1-1 record against Liberty, a win over the Virginia Military Institute, and 2-0 record against Winthrop. Of those games, only two count on Hawkins ledger; he was the head coach in each of the wins against Winthrop, in the and seasons. BRONCOS RECEIVE VOTES IN COLLEGE INSIDER POLL The Broncos received 12 points in the most recent CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top 25 poll, seven more than they recevied last week. The Broncos are currently slated to face four teams that are either ranked or receiving votes on this week s poll. ELITE COMPANY Darius Paul has now scored double-digits in each of his last five contests, a rare feat for a Bronco freshman. The last freshman to score in double figures in five consecutive games was current Bronco assistant David Kool, who scored 10+ in the last five games of his rookie campaign in the season. Joe Reitz also recorded the feat in his freshman season, scoring 10+ in five straight games during the season. DOWN TO THE WIRE The Broncos defeated the High Point Panthers thanks to the last second heroics of Austin Richie, who scored the game-winning lay-up with five seconds left to play in regulation. The last time the Broncos won a game in such a manner came in the season, when a tip-in bucket lifted the Broncos over the Northern Illinois Huskies on January 22, BRAINS AND BRAWN The NCAA announced earlier this year that the Western Michigan men s basketball team ranked in the top 10 percent in Academic Progress Rate (APR) for the academic year, the third time in the last four years the Broncos earned special recognition from the NCAA. The Broncos are the only men s basketball program in the MAC to rank in the top 10 percent. FILLING IT UP Both Brandon Pokley and Darius Paul have scored in double-digits in five consecutive games. We ve already expounded on the rarity of Paul s output (no freshman has scored in double-digits in five consecutive games since David Kool did it in the season), so now let s talk about Pokley s feat. Pokley s streak of five games of double-digit scoring more than doubles his previous career total of double-digit scoring performances; he had only two such games so far in his career, with both coming last season. SPREADING THE LOVE Sophomore point guard Austin Richie has taken to his new role in the offense in , and has been the key distributor for the Broncos during their five-game win streak. Richie has recorded five or more assists in four of the last five games, and is averaging 5.0 assists per game in that span as well STAT COMPARISONS TEAM STATS WMU... OU Overall Record Conf. 5 South high school as well as an All-State performer, and was the Miami Slam Dunk champion in HOMECOMING (OF SORTS) FOR WASHINGTON When Oakland assistant coach Saddi Washington steps onto the sidelines at University Arena, it will mark the first time in his coaching career that he has gone against his alma mater. Washington was a member of the Broncos men s basketball team from , helping the Broncos to an NCAA Tournament victory in 1998 against Clemson. Washington graduated as the third-leading scorer in Western Michigan history with 1,688 career points. BRONCOS NAB TOURNAMENT TITLE For the 10th straight season, the Broncos competed in a mid-season non-conference tournament, and for the first time in 10 years the Broncos brought home the title. Western Michigan won three games at the USF Invitational, defeating Loyola-Chicago, Maryland-Eastern Shore, and South Florida. The last in-season tournament the Broncos won was during the season, when they won the AZ.central Hoops Classic. THE (NOT-SO) THIN RED LINE The Broncos victory over the USF Bulls ranked as a Red Line upset for the Broncos, according to the website The win is one of only three such Red Line upsets recorded by MAC teams this season. Red Line Upsets in the MAC to date 11/18/12 - Akron 85, Penn State 60 11/18/12 - Western Michigan 58, South Florida 53 11/24/12 - Kent State 74, Nebraska 60 REDSHIRT NEWS Two of the Broncos freshmen in the season will be using their redshirt season. Kellen McCormick and Von Washington will sit out the season. will appear on SportsTime Ohio twice in the month of February, playing at Ball State (2/9) and home against Northern Illinois (2/16). Both games are scheduled for 6 p.m. tip-offs. EIGHT IS ENOUGH The Broncos will feature eight freshmen on their squad, the largest group of rookie players since the season. Coincidentally, that freshman class also feature eight players. DOUBLE THE DOUBLE-DOUBLES Entering the season, center Shayne Whittington had one career double-double, recorded last year against Miami. Whittington has already double his output from last season, as he recorded back-to-back double-doubles to start the season. Whittington is the first Bronco to record back-to-back double-doubles since Flenard Whitfield did it against Ohio and Northern Illinois in the season. QUICK TRANSITION Freshman Jared Klein made his collegiate debut in style against Cornell, recording 12 points and five steals off the bench. Klein played 29 total minutes for the Broncos, including crucial minutes down the stretch. BASKETBALL BLOODLINES Freshman Kellen McCormick has strong basketball bloodlines, with his father and uncle each earning success in their collegiate basketball careers; in the case of his father, that success stretched into the professional game. McCormick s father Tim McCormick played basketball at Michigan in the 1980 s, and was a first-round NBA draft pick in the 1984 NBA Draft. Tim McCormick played for six teams in his 10-year career. Kellen McCormick s uncle Mike McCormick was a letterwinner at Kent State, and earned Academic All-MAC honors in OH BROTHER, WHERE ART THOU? Bronco freshman Darius Paul isn t the only one in the house that has gone on to play Division I men s basketball. Big brother Brandon Paul is a starting guard for the Illinois Fighting Illini, and is about to enter his senior season. GRIDIRON BACKGROUND Of the Broncos eight freshmen in , four of them come from a football background in high school. Charles Harris was a receiver that made a visit to Notre Dame before committing to Western Michigan for basketball; Connar Tava was offered the option of playing tight end at both Michigan and Michigan State as a preferred walk-on; Jared Klein played quarterback and punter for his high school team at Otsego; and Von Washington served as quarterback for Kalamazoo Central. Stars of the Screen The Broncos are currently scheduled to appear on television four times in , with one of those games coming to University Arena. The Broncos will make their television debut when they play at Michigan (12/4), a game that will appear on the Big Ten Network. The next televised game will be on ESPNU, when the Broncos play North Carolina State (12/29) in a noon tip. The Broncos

7 Set to enter his 10th season as head coach and his 12th overall season with the Broncos, Steve Hawkins continues to mold the Western Michigan program into one that annually challenges for conference championships and postseason tournament berths. The Broncos have made four of Western Michigan s seven postseason appearances since Hawkins arrival in Kalamazoo, and have rattled off nine straight top-three MAC West finishes, the best mark in school history. In fact, over Hawkins nine years as head coach, Western Michigan is one of only two schools in the conference to exhibit that kind of consistent success. Hawkins reigns as the second-most tenured head coach currently in the MAC; now entering his 10th season as head coach, Hawkins trails just Buffalo s Reggie Witherspoon (14th season) in terms of coaching at a single institution, and is the most tenured coach in the MAC West division. His stature among his peers is not surprising; after nine seasons at WMU, Hawkins is included amongst the top coaches in MAC history. Hawkins is in conference games for a.589 winning percentage, and his overall gives him a.546 winning percentage, which is 17th in MAC annals. Hawkins has led the Broncos to back-to-back MAC West championships twice ( & ) and again in Hawkins became just the third coach in program history to reach 150 wins as a Bronco on November 23, 2011, when the Broncos drubbed the Oakland Golden Grizzlies to give Oakland its worst home loss in three seasons. On January 14, 2012, Hawkins won his 153rd game as a Bronco to surpass Bob Donewald for second on the program s all-time wins list; Hawkins achieved the feat in the middle of his ninth season, two full seasons fewer than Donewald needed to reach the mark, and trails just Western Michigan Hall of Famer Herbert Buck Read on the all-time list. Thanks to the team s efforts on the court, Bronco fans have been spoiled in recent campaigns with postseason appearances, all-conference players, attendance records and television appearances (74 regional or national broadcasts since ). The Broncos appeared on television a total of 12 times in the season, including an appearance in ESPN s 5-Hour ENERGY Puerto Rico Tip-Off in The Broncos have made regular appearances in ESPN-sponsored tournaments under Hawkins and, thanks to the conference s partnership with SportsTime Ohio, WMU remains a visible, important part of the MAC s television schedule. The buzz about the Broncos was so high in that national television returned to University Arena for the first time since 2004 with WMU defeating in-state rivals Central Michigan, 72-52, and Eastern Michigan, 70-52, on ESPNU. WMU had three-straight 20-win seasons and STEVE HAWKINS HEAD COACH South Alabama 87 10th Year at WMU ( ) 20th Year as Head Coach ( ) postseason appearances from , matching the previous total in both categories since the first season of Bronco basketball in The Broncos added another 20- win season in to give Hawkins credit for guiding five of WMU s eight 20-win seasons (four as head coach, one as an assistant). The Broncos success on the court has been matched by their success off the court, as well. Brandon Pokley was named Academic All-MAC in , continuing the Broncos impressive streak of players given the prestigious honor. The MAC names just five players Academic All-MAC at the conclusion of each season, and a Bronco has been among those players in each and every year under Hawkins, a boast no other school in the conference can lay claim to. Furthermore, WMU can lay claim to having 13 of the 36 players named to the team since the season, a ratio unmatched by any other MAC program. The season saw the Broncos overcome tremendous adversity both on and off the court, jelling at the right time and gaining momentum during a MAC Tournament run to the quarterfinals. Forced to endure a number of injuries that sidelined key players for weeks at a time, as well as a brutal non-conference schedule that ranked as the 12thtoughest in the nation and saw road trips to Purdue, Duke, and Gonzaga, the Broncos clawed their way to a respectable finish and the right to host a home game in the 2012 First Energy MAC Tournament. The Broncos pounded the Ball State Cardinals in the first round game played at University Arena, and ran away with their second-round game against the Northern Illinois Huskies at Quicken Loans Arena to reach the quarterfinal game against Kent State. Despite trailing midway through the second half, the Broncos did as they had all year and fought their way back, just narrowly missing the opportunity to take on Akron in the semifinals. The season was viewed by some as a transition year for the Broncos, but instead the team rose to the occasion and captured its fifth MAC West title under Hawkins, posting an 11-5 record in conference play. The Broncos returned to postseason play and hosted a postseason tournament game for the first time since 2005, defeating Tennessee Tech in the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT). Senior Alex Wolf was named an Academic All-MAC selection, continuing the long line of success for the Broncos in that category. The season saw David Kool establish himself as the all-time leading scorer in WMU history and become Hawkins second MAC Player of the Year and second AP All-American. Kool was also named to the Academic All-MAC squad for the third year in a row to become the fourth Hawkins player to be a three-time Academic All-MAC honoree. Only one other MAC school has had one such athlete during the last seven seasons. Kool was tabbed as the MAC Player of the Decade by Rivals.com. The Broncos defeated Northeastern, 75-60, on national television in the first Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic. The Broncos played in an inaugural ESPN-sponsored tournament for the third time following the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla., and the Charleston Classic in Charleston, S.C. Hawkins led the Broncos to their seventh top two finish in a row in the MAC West and the team reached the semifinals of the MAC Tournament. Freshman forward Nate Hutcheson joined Kool with postseason honors as the fourth newcomer of Hawkins WMU career to make the MAC All- Freshman Team. The season marked the second MAC West championship in a row and fourth in six years for the Brown & Gold, while junior David Kool became the first Bronco to lead the MAC in scoring since 1987 on his way to becoming ESPN the Magazine Third Team Academic All-America and Second Team All- MAC. Kool s Academic All-America honor was the third for a Bronco in three seasons, a mark that has happened only two other times in MAC history ( Ohio, Miami). The Broncos went 3-1 against in-state rivals Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan to win the Michigan MAC Men s Basketball Championship for the fourth year in a row (the award has only existed for four years) and win the title outright for the third time in four years. Freshman forward Flenard Whitfield became the third newcomer of Hawkins tenure named to the MAC All-Freshman Team. The season saw Western Michigan live up to preseason expectations as they claimed the MAC West title for the fourth time in school history and reached 20 wins for the fourth time in six seasons. The Broncos were strong defensively as they led the MAC and ranked 37th in the country (out of 328) in field goal percentage defense (.407) and 84th in the country in scoring defense (65.0 ppg). WMU also ranked 15th in the country and led the MAC in free throw shooting (.753) and the team was 34th in the country and led the MAC in rebound margin (+4.9). For his efforts, Hawkins was named the MAC Coach of the Year by ESPN mid-major reporter Kyle Whelliston at MidMajority.com. The Broncos were led by only the fourth pair of First Team All-MAC honorees in school history in senior center Joe Reitz and sophomore guard David Kool. Reitz, one of Hawkins first recruits, finished his career with a MAC record for free throws made (576) and finished third all-time in points (1,713) and rebounds (939) and fourth in field goal percentage (.548) in a career. Reitz was also named to the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major All-America Team and is now a starting left guard for the Indianapolis Colts of the National Football League. Reitz was also named to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-America Second Team to become only the seventh player in conference history to be a twotime Academic All-American. Kool was named the Most Valuable Player in the MAC by CollegeInsider. com as he led the league in scoring in conference games with 17.8 points per game. Western Michigan posted a pair of premier wins during the season as they knocked off NCAA Elite Eight participant Davidson, 83-76, and perennial mid-major power Southern Illinois, Davidson was ranked No. 25 in the country when WMU defeated the Wildcats for the Broncos first win against a ranked team since Dec. 19, 1984 (No. 5 DePaul, 65-64). The Broncos also ended a pair of streaks by winning at Detroit, 60-59, for the first time since 1974 and winning at Toledo, 69-55, for the first win there since Hawkins also was recognized in 2008 for his sense of style on the sidelines. He advanced to the final 16 of CollegeInsider.com s Runway to the Fashionable Four. Along the way he defeated Florida coach Billy Donovan and Virginia Commonwealth (now at

8 Alabama) head man Anthony Grant. Hawkins made another style run in 2010 to the Sensational 16, including a win over John Calipari of Kentucky. The Broncos faced their most ambitious schedule yet during the campaign. Going into conference play, the Broncos had the fourth toughest strength of schedule in the country (CollegeRPI. com/jan. 4). The Broncos played five teams that made the 2007 NCAA Tournament (Davidson, Miami-Ohio, Virginia Tech, Pittsburgh, Indiana), postseason NIT champion West Virginia and three other NIT participants (Toledo, Marist, San Diego State). The tough schedule saw Western Michigan make five national television appearances, including a victory over Virginia Tech on Thanksgiving Night at the Old Spice Classic in Orlando, Fla., that turned out to be the best win by a MAC team all season, as the Hokies finished 34th in the final RPI. Only one other MAC team posted a win against a team ranked in the RPI Top 50. The Broncos finished the year with three all-conference players, including MAC Freshman of the Year Kool. Reitz was named Second Team All-MAC for a second straight season and Shawntes Gary was named Honorable Mention All-MAC. Even more impressive, Reitz was named an ESPN the Magazine First Team Academic All-American, the first Bronco in school history to ever earn that honor and only the seventh in MAC history. Reitz and Hershberger were also named Academic All-MAC for a second consecutive season. During the spring of 2007, 2009 and 2010, the Broncos were honored as being in the top-10 percent of Division I men s basketball programs by the NCAA in Academic Progress Rate (APR). After three straight 20-win seasons, the Broncos struggled out of the gate during , but rebounded under Hawkins tutelage when conference play began. In a season Hawkins described as the most rewarding in my career, the Broncos responded by putting themselves in position to win a third consecutive MAC West Division title on the final day of the regular season. Not only were the Broncos successful on the court, but they continued to excel in the classroom. Senior Brian Snider and sophomores Reitz and Hershberger made up three-fifths of the Academic All-MAC team and Reitz became the first ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District IV First Team selection for WMU since After a record-setting first year as head coach in , the Broncos followed with a 20-win campaign and National Invitation Tournament appearance in WMU became the first program ever to defend its MAC West Division title and featured the winningest senior class in school history. WMU captured the MAC division, regular season and tournament championships en route to a 26-5 overall record in , the highest total in school history. The team appeared in the NCAA Tournament for just the third time since the program s inception after claiming the league s automatic bid with Western Michigan s first MAC Tournament championship. Along with individual and team success on the court, the Broncos gained national attention throughout the season. Included in the exposure was a national television broadcast (ESPN2) at University Arena, earned by the squad s quick start. Voted the top rookie head coach by Basketball Times and Coach of the Year by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan, Hawkins has also helped renew interest on campus and in the community. Three of the top five crowds in the last 10 years have packed University Arena since Hawkins took over the reins to cheer the Brown & Gold to victory. Players and coaches are heavily involved in organizations throughout the Kalamazoo area and the new student group, The Zoo, has been a focal point for Hawkins during his tenure. He has assembled one of the top coaching staffs not only in the conference, but the region as well. Recruiting has continued to improve by leaps and bounds under Hawkins, who as an assistant helped WMU sign the first Michigan Mr. Basketball in school history with 2006 award winner David Kool. Named Western Michigan s 13th head coach on May 1, 2003, Hawkins didn t have to move any further than an office away after accepting the job. He had served the previous three seasons as the program s top assistant under former head coach Robert McCullum. A 25-year veteran of the collegiate ranks, Hawkins captured his 200th career victory on Dec. 2, 2006, when WMU defeated previously unbeaten San Diego State, 84-73, at University Arena. He has settled in the Midwest after beginning his career as a student at South Alabama and before arriving in Kalamazoo had already displayed the ability to direct a quality program, both on the court and in the classroom, at the NCAA Division II level. Hawkins served for nine seasons as head coach of the basketball program at Quincy University in Illinois. The Ventura, Calif., native guided the Hawks to an overall record of , a total that included three NCAA Division II Tournament selections. In only his third year at Quincy, Hawkins guided the Hawks to a 19-9 record and the first of back-to-back NCAA berths. The following year ( ) Quincy advanced to the Great Lakes Region semifinals and earned a 23-7 record. QU also competed in the event in He was named the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association NCAA Division II Coach of the Year four times. Hawkins first broke into the collegiate profession at the University of South Alabama, where he worked for three seasons ( ) under head coach Mike Hanks as a student assistant. After spending the campaign as a graduate assistant at Quincy, Hawkins spent the next two seasons as the top assistant coach at St. Andrew s College (NAIA) in Laurinburg, N.C. He then returned to Quincy as an assistant coach for one season ( ) before assuming the head coaching duties in At the age of 19, Hawkins was named the junior varsity coach at Villanova Prep High School (Ojai, Calif.), a position he held for two seasons. He followed that experience with a one-year stint as the junior varsity coach at St. Bonaventure High School (Ventura, Calif.) before moving from the West Coast. Hawkins earned his bachelor s degree at South Alabama in 1987 and went on to claim his master s degree in sports science two years later at the United States Sports Academy. Hawkins married the former Kelly Wojciechowski on May 15, They reside in Kalamazoo with Kelly s son Trey and their first child together, Emily, born in April The couple is expecting their second child together in December COACH HAWKINS ON THE AIR During the season, head coach Steve Hawkins will join the Voice of the Broncos Robin Hook and Matt Holmes for Bronco Review every Thursday from 6-7 p.m. at Burdick s on The Fan 1660 AM.
