Kickoff is set for 4:05 p.m. EDT. This is the second consecutive season the Jaguars will play at Denver before observing the bye week. The Jaguars are the only team in the NFL to face four division leaders in the first six weeks and the combined record of the club s first six opponents is Sunday s game is the first of three on the road in the next five weeks. The Jaguars rank tied for eighth in the NFL with a road record from including a 1-1 mark this season. The Jaguars own an 8-5 mark in the game before the open date in 13 seasons. The first five weeks every game has been close, Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio said. We could potentially be 5-0, we could potentially be 0-5. It's the nature of the league. It's very competitive. There have been plays here or there that make the difference. We've earned 2-3, that's where we are right now. We'd like to have more but that is our record, that's where we stand and we've got a big tough assignment going into Denver. After beginning the season 0-2 with losses at Tennessee and against Buffalo, the Jaguars evened their record with back-to-back division wins in the final seconds with field goals by Josh Scobee. The Jaguars rallied for a win at Indianapolis in week three and followed with a overtime win at home against Houston. The Jaguars lost a fourth quarter lead to Pittsburgh last week as the Steelers claimed a win on NBC s Sunday Night Football. Rashean Mathis had a 72-yard interception return for a touchdown, his second interception return for a score this season. Second-year wide receiver Mike Walker recorded career-high receiving numbers as he finished with six receptions for 107 yards. The Jaguars and Broncos have played six times in the regular season with the series tied, 3-3, but the Jaguars have won three of the last four games including a win at Denver on September 23, The teams met in the postseason at Mile High Stadium in 1996 and 1997 with the Jaguars winning, 30-27, in the 1996 AFC Divisonal playoff game and the Broncos won in the 1997 AFC Wild Card game. The Jaguars own an 8-3 mark against AFC West opponents under head coach Jack Del Rio and the club won all four games in 2007 against AFC West foes. 4 STEELERS EDGE JAGUARS ON SUNDAY NIGHT: Ben Roethlisberger hit Hines Ward with an eight-yard touchdown pass with 1:53 remaining as the Steelers outlasted the Jaguars on Sunday night. The Jaguars managed only 213 total yards, 38 on the ground, but held the lead late in the fourth quarter. The Jaguars took an early 7-0 lead on a 72-yard interception return for a touchdown by Rashean Mathis on the opening possession, the second-longest interception return in franchise history. The Steelers answered with a 12-play, 71-yard drive that was capped off with a one-yard touchdown pass from Roethlisberger to Heath Miller. Maurice Jones-Drew regained the lead for the Jaguars on the ensuing drive with a one-yard touchdown run. The play was set up by a 39-yard pass interference penalty by the Steelers on a David Garrard pass to Matt Jones in the end zone. Jeff Reed connected on a 38-yard field goal early in the second quarter to cut the deficit to Following a threeand-out by the Jaguars, Roethlisberger found Nate Washington down the sideline for a 48-yard touchdown. The Steelers made it right before half with a 23-yard field goal by Reed. Neither team could mount an extended drive in the third quarter. The Jaguars moved the ball to the Steelers 37-yard line midway through the quarter, but Garrard s pass was incomplete to Jones on a fourth-and-seven play. Garrard came back on the Jaguars next posssession and found tight end Marcedes Lewis down the middle for a 24-yard touchdown pass to give the Jaguars a lead. The drive was highlighted by a 32-yard reception by Mike Walker. Both teams punted on their next possession. The Steelers took over at their own 20-yard line with 6:33 remaining. Roethlisberger directed an 11-play, 80-yard drive including two third-down conversions and ended the drive with a touchdown pass to Ward. Following three incomplete passes on the ensuing possession, Garrard hit Matt Jones for a 10-yard reception on fourth down to keep the drive alive. The Jaguars failed to convert a fourth-and-14 with 30 seconds remaining. JAGUARS FACE THE BEST OF THE AFC: The Jaguars play their sixth consecutive game against an AFC opponent on Sunday before observing the bye week. The combined record of the club s first six opponents is 19-9 including games against all four division leaders. The Jaguars are the only team to face four division leaders in the first six weeks. The Jaguars three losses have come against opponents with a combined record of 13-2 including one of the NFL s two undefeated teams in Tennessee (5-0). DEJA VU: The Jaguars own a 13-7 mark against AFC West opponents including a winning record against all four teams in the division. Last year they were 4-0 against the AFC West. JAGUARS LOOK FOR VICTORY BEFORE BYE WEEK: The Jaguars will observe the bye week on Sunday, October 19. The Jaguars own an 8-5 mark in the game before the open date in 13 seasons, including a 3-2 mark under head coach Jack Del Rio. This is the second consecutive season the Jaguars will have their open date the week after playing at Denver as they won on September 23, 2007 at INVESCO Field at Mile High. JAGUARS RANK AMONG NFL S BEST IN FEWEST TURNOVERS: The Jaguars rank tied for fifth in the NFL with only five turnovers in five games. None of the turnovers have led to points for the opponents, one of only three teams to accomplish the feat. The Jaguars have not turned the ball over in consecutive games for the first time since the end of the 2005 season and are one of only five NFL teams to have consecutive games this season without a turnover. JAGUARS GET INVOLVED IN TIGHT GAMES: The Jaguars are 2-3 with their three losses coming by an average of 5.3 points. The Jaguars are the only team in the NFL to have every game this season decided by eight points or less. NOTES FROM LAST WEEK S WIN Maurice Jones-Drew surpassed 100 career receptions and 1,000 career receiving yards as he finished with six receptions for 23 yards. In addition, Jones- Drew scored his 29th career touchdown, his 25th career rushing touchdown. Defensive tackle John Henderson played in his 100th career game as a Jaguar, the 14th player in franchise history to accomplish the feat. The Jaguars had a season-high three sacks. John Henderson and Paul Spicer each had a sack and rookie Quentin Groves and Reggie Hayward split a sack. Spicer and second-year pro Derek Landri tied for the team-high with three quarterback pressures. David Garrard surpassed 7,000 career passing yards and threw a touchdown pass for the ninth time in the last 11 games. Rashean Mathis recorded his fifth interception against Pittsburgh in six career games (including playoffs) and has returned three for touchdowns. LB Daryl Smith led team with 11 tackles while LBs Mike Peterson and Justin Durant had 10 tackles. Smith was the only defensive player to play all 73 snaps. JAGUARS PROVE TO BE ROAD WARRIORS The Jaguars are 1-1 on the road in 2008 with a loss at Tennessee in the season-opener and a come from behind win at Indianapolis in week three. The Jaguars rank tied for the eighth in the NFL with a road record from The Jaguars finished 5-3 on the road in the 2007 regular season and have posted a winning road record in three of the previous five seasons under Jack Del Rio. The Jaguars have scored 24 points and allowed only one score (7 points) in the first five games. 5 RASHEAN MATHIS IS TEAM S CAPTAIN AND PLAYMAKER: Jaguars cornerback and team captain Rashean Mathis has recorded two interceptions in the first five games and returned both for touchdowns. Mathis picked off Peyton Manning on 9/21 at Indianapolis and returned it 61 yards for a touchdown. Last week against Pittsburgh, Mathis intercepted Ben Roethlisberger on the opening possession and returned it 72 yards for the second-longest return in team history. Mathis has five interceptions against Pittsburgh in six games (including playoffs). Mathis joins Green Bay s Charles Woodson as the only two players with two interceptions returned for touchdowns this season. Mathis, who became the first Jaguars cornerback to be voted to the Pro Bowl in 2006, holds the franchise records with 23 career interceptions and three interceptions returned for touchdowns. He ranks tied for fourth in the NFL from with 21 interceptions. Intercepted his second pass on the ensuing possession. 9/21/08 at Indianapolis Intercepted Peyton Manning on a pass intended for Marvin Harrison and returned it 61 yards to give the Jaguars a 10-7 lead in the second quarter. Tied for the third-longest interception return in / 5/08 vs. Pittsburgh Picked off Ben Roethlisberger on the game s opening possession and returned it 72 yards for a score. It was the second-longest interception return in team history. MIKE WALKER HAS BREAKOUT GAME: Second-year pro Mike Walker produced career-high receiving numbers last week at Pittsburgh as he led the team with six receptions for 107 yards, the first 100-yard receiving game of the season for the Jaguars. Walker had receptions of 32, 18, 18, 16, 14 and 9 yards and finished with a 17.8 average per reception. Walker had five receptions for 46 yards against Houston on 9/28. Walker has played in only four career games after spending his rookie season on injured reserve with a knee injury. Walker, 6-2, 208, was a third round pick in 2007 after playing four seasons at Central Florida with Denver s Brandon Marshall. He played in all four preseason games in 2007 and finished with four receptions for 33 yards before re-aggravating a knee injury in the preseason finale against Washington. THREAT IN THE PASSING GAME: Maurice Jones-Drew is utilized in several different ways by the Jaguars and he has thrived in the passing game. Jones-Drew leads all AFC running backs with 19 receptions for 161 yards and ranks second on the team behind Matt Jones (23 rec., 269 yards). Jones-Drew surpassed 100 career receptions and 1,000 career receiving yards last week against Pittsburgh. Jones-Drew, who has 105 career receptions, joined Fred Taylor (277) and James Stewart (119) as the only running backs in franchise history with 100-plus receptions. In addition, he is the fourth-fastest player to reach 1,000 career receiving yards in team history as he did it in his 36th career game. He has at least three receptions in 20 of 36 games. JONES-DREW WANTS THE BALL ON THE GOAL LINE: Maurice Jones-Drew leads the Jaguars with three rushing touchdowns in 2008 and has 25 career rushing touchdowns in 36 games. The 25 career rushing touchdowns rank third in team history and are the third-most in the NFL since He has only gone more than three games in his career without a rushing touchdown one time and that was the first four games of his career.
