Nominees are submitted to the conference office by the institutions sports information offices. Winners will be made available via and the conference website by Monday afternoon. Postseason Awards Following the conclusion of regular season play, the MEAC will conduct a vote for allconference teams. The teams will be voted on by the conference s head coaches and sports information directors. Each body will vote on a first- and second-team all-conference team in addition to an Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year, and Rookie of the Year. Head coaches will also vote on the conference s Head Coach of the Year award. MEAC Basketball Tie-Breaker System BASKELL a) Head-to-Head Competition b) Conference-only record based on winning percentage vs. highest ranked team in conference standings, continuing down in descending order c) Scoring margin between two teams d) Coin toss by the Commissioner Mutiple-Team Tie (3 or more) a) Team with best winning percentage vs. all tied teams. Once the top team is selected the remaining teams are based on their record amongst the original tied teams. In case of tied percentages: 3-0 is better than 2-0; and 2-0 is better than 1-0 b) Conference-only record based on winning percentage vs. highest ranked team in conference standings, continuing down in descending order c) Scoring margin vs. common conference opponents d) Best winning percentage in non-conference games against Division I opponents e) Coin toss by the Commissioner MEAC Basketball on the Tube The MEAC will sponsor three televised women s basketball games to air on the ESPNU network. The television schedule tips off with a live broadcast on Monday, January 19 as the South Carolina State Bulldogs host the Hampton Pirates beginning at noon. The 2008 MEAC Championship Tournament will also air on ESPNU (taped delayed). The tentative schedule is listed below. 6 MEAC History Educating students for the game of life. THE MID-EASTERN ATHLETIC CONFERENCE, a NCAA Division I Conference, is in its 38th year of operation heading into the academic school year. Housed in the Armada Hoffler Tower at the Town Center of Virginia Beach, Virginia, the MEAC is made up of 12 outstanding, historically black institutions across the Atlantic Coastline: Bethune-Cookman University, Coppin State University, Delaware State University, Florida A&M University, Hampton University, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, Norfolk State University, North Carolina A&T State University, South Carolina State University and Winston-Salem State University. The MEAC has enjoyed great success over the years in athletics. Currently, the league has automatic qualifying bids for NCAA postseason play in baseball (since 1994), men s basketball (since 1981), women s basketball (since 1982), I-AA football (since 1996), softball (since 1995), men and women s tennis (since 1998), and volleyball (since 1994). HISTORY In 1969, a group of innovators long associated with intercollegiate athletics met in Durham, North Carolina, to discuss the feasibility of organizing a new conference based along the Atlantic coastline. A number of representatives from different institutions joined the steering committee in a two-day discussion about the new conference. Seven of these institutions agreed to become the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference: Delaware State College, Howard University, University of Maryland Eastern Shore, Morgan State University, North Carolina A&T State University, North Carolina Central University and South Carolina State University. The MEAC headquarters remained in Durham, North Carolina until 1981, moving to Greensboro March 26, In August 2005, the MEAC relocated to its current location in Virginia Beach, Virginia. The conference was confirmed in 1970, kicking off its first season of competition in Football in In 1978, the MEAC selected its first full-time commissioner, Kenneth A. Free and the following year, expanded to nine schools with the admissions of two Florida schools: Bethune-Cookman College and Florida A&M University. The MEAC operated with nine schools until 1985 when Coppin State College was admitted. The MEAC expanded again in the 90 s with the inclusion of Hampton University in 1995 and Norfolk State University in The final expansion occurred in 2007 with the addition of Winston-Salem State University. On June 8, 1980, the MEAC was classified Division One by the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the following month, received an automatic berth in the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship. SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS In Basketball, Coppin State and Hampton made history in the NCAA Tournament with their first round victories. The No. 15 seed Coppin State defeated No. 2 South Carolina in 1997 and No. 15 Hampton, defeated No. 2 Iowa State in Both team victories ranked among the Top 10 greatest tournament upsets of all-time by ESPN s Sportscenter. Football has produced many NFL and professional football greats, including ten pro football Hall of Famers: Marion Motley (1968); Roosevelt Brown (1975); Len Ford (1976); David Deacon Jones (1980); Willie Lanier (1986); Art Shell (1989); Larry Little (1993); Leroy Kelly (1994); Elvin Bethea (2003) and Harry Carson (2006). Currently there are 20 former MEAC football players on NFL rosters. In Volleyball, Florida A&M became the first MEAC school to win a match in the NCAA Tournament, with a win over Winthrop in the first round of the 2003 Tournament. In 2004 the Lady Rattlers became the first HBCU ranked in the Top 25 American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) national poll.in Softball, Bethune-Cookman earned the league s first-ever At-Large bid into the NCAA Softball Tournament in The Lady Wildcats went on to defeat Florida, Central Florida (UCF) and South Florida to win the Florida Regional in Gainesville, the first time any MEAC school has won a NCAA Regional. B-CC ended its remarkable 2005 season with the leagues first-ever rankings in the final softball polls, reaching No. 18 in the NFCA/USA Today Coaches poll and No. 23 in the USA Softball/ESPN.com Poll. 8 Commissioner Dennis E. Thomas COMMISSIONER THOMAS will enter his sixth year as Commissioner of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference on September 1, Under his dynamic leadership, the conference has solidified its financial stability, implemented a website for the Basketball Tournament ( improved the main conference website ( to be more interactive for the membership, fans and supporters, negotiated a seven-year television package with ESPN to broadcast Football, Men and Women s Basketball and other sports events, and also televised, for the first time in conference history the 2003 championship baseball game between Florida A&M University and Bethune-Cookman College at Disney s Wide World of Sports Complex (Cracker Jack Stadium), the 2005 volleyball championship and the 2006 softball game between Florida A&M and Bethune-Cookman. He presented a new conference mark (Logo), and established a televised Thursday night primetime for Women s Basketball, 8 p.m., for the season. Additionally, the Commissioner has implemented a Highest Graduation Award for the member institution with the highest graduation rate for the academic year. The institution that receives the honor is also awarded $25,000. Dr. Thomas has been persistent and hardworking to increase Corporate America s investment with the MEAC. He has brought on board Russell Athletic Corporation, Delta Airlines, State Farm, NIKE, Wachovia and ESPN. Thomas was instrumental in negotiating the SWAC/MEAC Football Challenge beginning with the 2005 football season with ESPN, which will provide the MEAC participating institutions with national exposure and financial guarantees. This energetic administrator brings over 30 years of athletic and higher education experience to the MEAC. His most recent accomplishment was the successful guidance of the Hampton University Department of Intercollegiate Athletics. As the Athletics Director, Hampton University athletics excelled on and off the field of competition. In twelve (12) years of service, Dr. Thomas guided Hampton from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I. Hampton was one of the few institutions who made the transition a successful one. Following the move up in September 1995, the Pirates winning programs received numerous accolades. For two (2) consecutive years (2001 and 2002), the Pirates were awarded the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame Achievement Award, given to the Division I athletic program with the highest winning percentage in the state of Virginia. Under Dr. Thomas leadership the Pirates and Lady Pirates won MEAC championships in Men s Basketball, Women s Basketball, Women s Softball, Women s Tennis, Women s Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field, Men s Tennis, Football, and Men s Cross Country. The Pirates also won the 1999 MEAC Talmadge L. Hill Men s All Sports Award and the 2002 Mary McLeod Bethune Women s All Sports Award, symbolizing the overall strength of the athletics program. During his term at Hampton, Thomas demonstrated his strong commitment to the success of student athletes by developing the athletic academic support department to increase graduation rates for student athletes. While Athletics Director, Hampton men s basketball team beat Iowa State University in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Men s Basketball Tournament, and made history when the Pirates went back to the NCAA Division I Tournament the following year. No other 15-seed who defeated a No. 2 seed had returned to the NCAA Tournament the following year. Dr. Thomas leadership and managerial skills among national and local organizations has not gone unnoticed. During the 2001 season, Thomas served as Chairman of the NCAA Division I-AA Football Committee. He also served on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee and is a board of director member of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. Before becoming Commissioner, Thomas served as Chairman of the MEAC Championship Committee, Chairman of the MEAC Basketball Tournament Committee, is a member of the Division I-AA Director of Athletics Association Executive Committee and was awarded the National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics (NACDA) Athletic Director of the Year Award for the Southeast Region for I-AA/AAA in Thomas is a member of the NCAA Division I Management Council, Management Council Sub-Committees on Membership, Selection Review and Administrative, the NCAA I-FCS Governance Committee and the NCAA Division I Infractions Committee. He is the past chair of the NCAA Division I-AA Commissioners Association. He also serves on the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Executive Committee, selection committee for the General Sports Turf Systems AD of the year awards program and NACDA John McLendon Memorial Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Awards selection committee. The Heidelberg, Mississippi native was a letterman in football and track & field in high school and at the age of 16, embarked on a collegiate career that is still in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) record books. In 1974, he made history as the first and only offensive lineman to be named the Conference Offensive Player of the Year. He finished his collegiate football career as a three-year letterman, a two-time Pittsburgh Courier First Team All-American, First Team Black Mutual Sports Network All-American, and Outstanding College Athletics of America (1974). Thomas was also an honor student in college. On December 12, 2003, Thomas was inducted into the SWAC Hall of Fame. Thomas played and coached under the legendary Marino H. Casem (Godfather) while at Alcorn State. In 1978, the state legislature of Mississippi issued a proclamation proclaiming April 8 as the Dennis and Johnny Thomas Day (brothers) in the state for their achievements in scholarship, athletics, and leadership. Thomas is a 1974 graduate of Alcorn State University, a 1975 graduate of Northeast Louisiana University (master s), and a 1984 graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo (doctorate). 11 MEAC Season in Review Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Announces All-Sports Award Winners ampton won its sixth consecutive Mary McLeod HBethune Women s All-Sports Award and Norfolk State captured its third consecutive and fourth overall Talmadge Layman Hill Men s Award. Hampton totaled 72 points of the possible 96 points, while Norfolk State tallied 63 of a possible 84 points. Each institution received a $25,000 check which was presented at the MEAC Spring Delegate Assembly and Committee Meetings in Virginia Beach. Hampton has won eight overall All-Sports trophies since joining the MEAC in 1996 (three men s awards, including back-to-back victories in 2003 and 2004, and four women s awards). Norfolk State won its first men s trophy in Cross Country The Hampton women and Norfolk State men won the 2006 MEAC Cross Country Championship crowns at SAS Soccer Park in Raleigh, North Carolina. The Lady Pirates, who scored 63 points, won their second overall title and their first since the 2004 season. The Norfolk State Spartans captured their seventh consecutive title. Howard s Jessica Neal and Norfolk State s David Kemboi were named Outstanding Performers. Neal finished first in the women s race with a personal best time of 17:47.3 while Kemboi was first with a time of 24:29.3 to win the men s race for the second straight year. Football The Hampton Pirates ended the regular season with a 7-2 record in MEAC play en route to their third consecutive trip to the NCAA Division-I playoffs. The eighth ranked Pirates hosted New Hampshire in postseason play and ended the season with a loss. Hampton s Alonzo Coleman set a school and MEAC career record with 826 carries for 4,642 yards (5.6 avg.) and 62 touchdowns. South Carolina State s DeShawn Baker earned Offensive Player of the Year accolades while Hampton s Justin Durant was the MEAC Defensive Player of the Year for the third straight year. Durant became the first player in MEAC history to earn the award three times on either the offense or defense side of the ball. He was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the 16th pick of the second round and the 48th overall in the 2007 NFL Draft, becoming the highest selection in Pirate history. Volleyball Florida A&M dominated conference play and recorded their eighth consecutive undefeated mark in MEAC Play. The Lady Rattlers captured their sixth consecutive MEAC title and ninth overall. FAMU s Maria Andonova was named the Player of the Year after leading the MEAC and ranking second in the nation with 5.93 kills per game. Romona Riley-Bozier of Morgan State took home Coach of the Year honors for the fifth time in her career. Riley-Bozier led her team to a 23-9 finish and a 9-1 conference record, including an undefeated 9-0 home stand in her 19th year at the helm of the Lady Bears. Morgan State freshman Ivanti Bush garnered Rookie of the Year accolades. Bush ranked among the top performers in MEAC statistics during 2006 and led her team in kills per game, hitting percentage and points. Indoor Track and Field The Hampton Lady Pirates earned 51 points during day one and finished with a new MEAC record 179 points at the MEAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Yvette Lewis won Outstanding Performer honors for the second year in a row. Lewis won four events and earned 53.5 points during the two-day championships. On the men s side, the Spartans of Norfolk State recorded 133 points to earn their second straight MEAC title and fourth overall. Hampton s Terrance Burton tallied 20.5 points and was named Outstanding Performer. Women s Basketball The Coppin State Lady Eagles defeated cross-town rival Morgan State in their regular season finale to finish with an 18-0 undefeated mark in MEAC play for the second straight year. Coppin State guard Rashida Suber was selected the Player of the Year. Second Year Head Coach Donald Beasley, of Morgan State, was selected by his peers as the 2007 Coach of the Year, while North Carolina A&T s Ta Wuana Cook was selected as the Rookie of the Year. Howard s Shannon Carlisle was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Delaware State captured its first MEAC tournament crown after coming up short six previous times when they defeated Morgan State, Delaware State advanced to the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. As regular season champions, Coppin State earned a bid to the Women s National Invitation Tournament (WNIT). The Lady Eagles won the school s first D-I postseason game with a victory over St. Joseph s before ending their season against South Florida in the second round of the WNIT. Men s Basketball Delaware State clinched their third consecutive regular season championship title dominating conference opponents with 16 wins and two losses. The Hornets finished the regular season with a overall record. DSU s Jahsha Bluntt was named the Player of the Year for the second straight year while Head Coach Greg Jackson earned back-to-back Coach of the Year accolades and teammate Aaron Fleetwood was selected as the Defensive Player of the Year. Hampton s Michael Freeman was named Rookie of the Year. Freeman led the nation in field goal percentage, setting the all-time record for highest field goal percentage by a freshman with 67- percent. Delaware State was upset in the championship game when Brian Greene scored a buzzer beater layup to give Florida A&M a dramatic victory. The Rattlers advanced to the opening round game of the NCAA Tournament but fell to Niagara As regular season champions, DSU received an automatic bid to play in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) falling short to West Virginia in the 1st round. Bowling Maryland Eastern Shore captured their second straight MEAC title and third overall with a win over Bethune-Cookman. UMES freshman Marion Singleton earned Outstanding Performer honors and Head Coach Sharon Brummell was named the Outstanding Coach. The Lady Hawks were selected as one of eight teams to compete in the NCAA National Championship. UMES battled throughout and came within 48 pins of winning their first national championship in a forced game seven against Vanderbilt. The NCAA runner-up Lady Hawks got three nods on All-American Teams, and three MEAC teams (UMES, Bethune-Cookman and Morgan State) finished the year ranked among the top 16 in the National Tenpins Coaches Association national poll. Tennis The men and women of South Carolina State breezed through conference play en route to undefeated seasons. On the women s side, Mirian Cruz earned Player of the Year accolades for the second straight year, while teammate Iveta Blodneice was named the Rookie of the Year. Florida A&M s Rochelle Goldthreate garnered Coach of the Year accolades. The Lady Bulldogs cruised through the MEAC tournament and defeated Bethune-Cookman 4-0 to earn their third straight MEAC title. South Carolina State advanced to the NCAA Tournament but lost to No. 2 Georgia to end their season at On the men s side, South Carolina State swept MEAC honors with Ionut Hurduc (Player of the Year), Radek Pivonka (Rookie of the Year) and Hardeep Judge (Coach of the Year) each being recognized. Norfolk State, Hampton and Florida A&M were competitive throughout the year and each posted a 7-2 MEAC mark. Hampton defeated Florida A&M in the championship match and the Pirates Gabriel Groh earned Outstanding Tournament honors, while Hampton Head Coach, Robert Screen, who earned his 1,000 career victory this season, earned Outstanding Coach honors. The Pirates advanced to the NCAA tournament but were defeated by Virginia in a first round match. Outdoor Track and Field Hampton and Norfolk State swept the track and field titles with victories at the MEAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The Lady Pirates won their second straight outdoor title and fifth overall with 134 points. The NSU men s team posted 165 points to capture its second consecutive title and fourth overall. The Spartans became the first men s team in conference history to win all three MEAC track titles (cross country, indoor and outdoor) two years in a row. Hampton s Yvette Lewis jumped ft. to earn the national championship title in the triple jump at the NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Sacramento. Lewis also earned All-American honors in the 100-meter hurdles. Coppin State s Steve Delice (400m hurdles), Hampton s Andrew Peresta (400m hurdles) and UMES Kimani Kirton (Shot Put) also earned All-American nods. Softball Hampton posted an unblemished 14-0 record in MEAC play to earn the top seed in the championship tournament. Hampton s Maggie Wolfe was selected as the Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Amanda Black, also of Hampton, was named the Pitcher of the Year and Courtney Young of Howard was selected as the Rookie of the Year. Hampton head coach Tiny Laster, who passed away a week before the championship tournament, was named the MEAC Coach of the Year. Howard won the 2007 MEAC softball title with a 17-0 victory over North Carolina A&T. Young earned Outstanding Performer accolades, while Howard Head Coach Tonja Braxton was named Outstanding Coach. Baseball The defending MEAC Champion Bethune-Cookman Wildcats clinched the MEAC regular season championship with a 16-1 record and earned the top seed in the MEAC baseball championship tournament. The Wildcats scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally and defeat North Carolina A&T in a double elimination game of the championship. North Carolina A&T s Charlie Gamble was selected as the MEAC Player of the Year. Bethune-Cookman s Francisco Rodriguez was named the Pitcher of the Year, while Christian Beatty of North Carolina A&T was selected as the Rookie of the Year. 14 Pre-Season Predictions MEAC Announces Preseason Women s Basketball Honors Lady Eagles Picked to Win Crown; Coppin State s Suber Named Preseason Player of the Year The Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) announced its preseason all-conference teams and preseason predictions at its annual Basketball Tip-Off Luncheon at the Sheraton Raleigh in Raleigh, N.C. Coppin State University guard Rashida Suber was named the preseason MEAC Player of the Year for the second year. The Lady Eagles earned 12 first place votes and were picked to win their fourth straight regular-season title by the leagues head coaches and sports information directors. Last season Coppin State went 18-0 in MEAC play for the second year in a row. Delaware State, the defending MEAC tournament champion, was predicted to finish second in this year s poll, earning nine first place votes. North Carolina A&T, Morgan State and Hampton complete the preseason top five. Suber, the 2007 MEAC Player of the Year, earned an All-MEAC first-team selection after averaging 18.9 points and 3.8 rebounds per game. The guard led the MEAC in 3-point field goals made (101) and was second in steals (98). Joining Suber on the preseason All-MEAC first team are Delaware State teammates Raquel Collier and Katreem Palmer. Collier earned an All-MEAC first-team choice for the third straight year. She led her team in scoring (13.5 ppg) and was among the top fifteen in the MEAC in scoring and field three percentage (.681). Palmer was second on the team in scoring with 11.1 points per game and led the team in rebounding with 7.1 per game. Howard s Shannon Carlisle and North Carolina A&T s Amber Bland round out the preseason first-team. Carlisle led the Lady Bison with 16 points per game and earned the 2007 MEAC Defensive Player of the Year honor. She ranked among the top three in the nation with 3.7 steals per game and was also among the top four in the MEAC with 3.4 assists per game. Bland led the conference and was 21st in the nation with 19.6 points per game. The MEAC women s basketball season tips off with seven of the 12 schools opening up on November 9.
