3 THE NETBALL COURT IS MY BATTLEGROUND

4 WELCOME What a year! Everyone involved in Netball Scotland has experienced an incredibly busy year, not only conducting our usual business, but in addressing our legacy your membership has grown and the number of netball clubs and players is still increasing at an unprecedented pace. On behalf of our sport, and our membership, we are continually working towards our strategic vision for Netball to be the first choice sport for girls and women in Scotland. As you will all be aware we also appointed our new CEO, Claire Nelson, during the season. Claire took up her position in October and has settled in very quickly to this important role for Netball Scotland. Claire is a dynamic, passionate advocate for netball and for women s involvement in sport at all levels. As our CEO she is continually striving to ensure that netball in Scotland is a force to be reckoned with in amongst the plethora of other sports which are all competing for recognition on the national and international stage. As a result of the sheer hard work of our CEO and the Netball Scotland staff, and with support from the Board, we were successful in our bid to become part of the Vitality Netball Superleague. Our franchise, the Sirens, will play their home matches in the Emirates Arena in Glasgow. We need you, our members, to encourage your families, friends and colleagues to come along and support all of our international squads, as well as the Sirens franchise team, in the coming season. This will help us at Netball Scotland to further our vision of showcasing our sport, to all age groups, and in particular, positively encourage our young girls and women to participate, in one role or another, in our sport of netball. From a corporate standpoint, our governance has to remain strong, resilient and legally compliant and the Netball Scotland Board works closely with our CEO, and other staff, to ensure we are all striving towards this goal. The Board Directors continue to liaise closely with the staff to achieve a real understanding of our organisation and we share our insights at each of our bi-monthly Board meetings. In this way we corporately form a stronger knowledge of Netball Scotland from which to base our decisions, and support our CEO and staff with their work. As you may be aware, each Board Director has a limited term of office. This ensures positive succession planning is guaranteed and the skill sets, which we require from board members, are current and appropriate. As the business grows we have co-opted additional skillsets on to the Board this year in the Human Resource and Commercial areas which is vital for our growing organisation. My sincere thanks must go to sportscotland, and their staff, for their consistent support and belief in our sport. This is very tangible through their continued and improved level of financial and resource investment. We do appreciate it and look forward to working with them into the future. Finally, my thanks to all the Netball Scotland staff, Board Directors and our army of volunteers, who work tirelessly and seamlessly together, to ensure we are all working towards the same objective. That is to ensure that Netball Scotland, and its membership, continues to thrive and goes from strength to strength. Netball Scotland is definitely going places! 6 CEO WELCOME Dearest Netball Scotland Members, What a year this has been! Never for a moment when I started in my role as CEO last October did I imagine that my first year would be as exhausting, challenging and demanding as it has turned out to be. But, with all that said, I have never felt more comfortable or at home in a role in my life. This is down to my absolute belief in, and passion for, what we are doing here in Scotland. And when I say we, I mean it. Because the strength and success of our sport lies wholly in our people an impressive Board of Directors, an impassioned, knowledgeable and driven team of staff, a loyal and engaged membership, Partners who genuinely believe in us and are invested in helping us to achieve our aspirations, and a growing group of talented, professional and ambitious national athletes. Through collaboration and a firm commitment to realising our vision and embodying our purpose, we are leading the way, not just in our sport, but across this vast landscape of National Governing Bodies. So what have we achieved this last year? Some highlights for me are the launch of a new brand and purpose, as well as a number of new programmes and initiatives including the Thistle Mark Club Accreditation. Furthermore, we have improved how we operate by taking courses online, we ve delivered numerous high quality events, hosted the first International event in Scotland s new Sports Performance Centre, Oriam, and gained our best collection of Netball Europe results in 11 years. And on top of all of this, we successfully tendered for a place in next season s Vitality Netball Superleague (VNSL). Phew! It is important that we take time to reflect on and appreciate our successes, but we mustn t rest in this place for too long. Looking forward to next season, there is a lot of work to be done. I don t think, however, that there has ever been a more exciting time for our sport and it is imperative that we continue to build upon our good work to date. When you are on the rise you must keep pushing forward. We have a busy year ahead with the launch of a Performance League and of course the launch of the Sirens in the VNSL, amongst other developments and advancements. The Sirens is an important, strategic move for us to allow us to develop our national athletes, accelerate the growth of our sport, attract commercial partners, raise our profile and drive positive change for females in sport. This is why we need you all to get behind this team, because it is only when we can demonstrate the appetite for, and impact of, netball that we will start to drive real, meaningful change. And finally I just want to take this moment to personally thank each and every one of you for the overwhelming support and encouragement that you have shown me in my first year in post. I really appreciate how receptive you have all been to all of the changes and innovations introduced (and I m speaking to my Staff and Board here too!), and for being shining examples of the positive power of sport. We are all here because we love netball and I will continue to do my utmost to do right by the sport and organisation, leading us into our next significant phase of growth and development.everything I, we, do is for you and the sport, and I am proud every single day of what our small but amazing nation is achieving. Here s to us all contributing to, and enjoying, a fantastic Season 2016/17. Grow as an Individual. Develop as a Sport. Succeed as a Team.
