Radio: Cenla Broadcasting, KZMZ 96.9-FM (Rich Dupree Play-by-Play Lewis Lauve Color Analyst ) Rebels begin season with shutout victory against Captain Shreve The Rebels improved to 5-1 in season openers under head coach Robbie Martin with a 17-0 win over Captain Shreve last week. Jarious Green rushed for two touchdowns, and the Pineville defense limited the Gators to just 57 yards of total offense in the shutout victory. Senior defensive end Esdon Boyd led the Rebels defense with nine tackles, including five for loss and two sacks, and the constant defensive pressure on Captain Shreve allowed the Rebels to overcome six turnovers. Three Rebels rushed for at least 50 yards, led by Green s 55 yards and two TDs on 11 carries. Senior quarterback Clayton Wider finished with 52 yards on 19 carries, and junior fullback Landon King had 50 yards on 14 carries. Sophomore linebacker Jordan Brown got the Rebels on the board with a defensive safety. Neither team scored in the second half after Pineville opened a 17-0 lead after the first two quarters. Former district rivals meeting once again If Pineville High School has a natural rival, Tioga certainly would fit the bill. The two schools are located just 5 miles apart, separated by U.S. Highways 165 and 71, and they service many of the same neighborhoods in northeast Rapides Parish. The schools face off against one another annually in nearly every sport, and they formerly competed as rivals in the old District 3-4A. Pineville moved up to Class 5A in 2007 and the two teams have played as non-district competitors ever since. The most recent redistricting plan pushed Tioga into a similar situation as Pineville, playing against district opponents from the Monroe region. Tioga last defeated the Rebels in 2009, winning at D.C. Bill Bates Stadium as Pineville finished that season 1-9. However, the Rebels have won five consecutive games against the Indians by an average margin of nearly 19 points per game. Last season s Rebel victory was the closest contest over the past five seasons and the only time during that time span Tioga has scored more than 14 points.

2 Week 2 Pineville Rebels at Tioga Indians Friday, Sept p.m. Landon King nears 1,000-yard mark for his career Junior fullback Landon King is just 130 yards away from surpassing the 1,000-yard rushing mark for his career. The 6-foot-1, 215-pound led the Rebels in rushing in 2014 with 820 yards and eight touchdowns. After rushing for 50 yards in last week s win over Captain Shreve, King is just 130 yards shy of 1,000 for his career. Senior running back Jarious Green already has surpassed 1,000 yards during his career. The 6-foot, 215-pound Green rushed for more than 500 yards as a sophomore and a junior, and he s the Rebels rushing leader so far this season after his 55-yard, two-td performance against the Gators last week. Esdon Boyd stands out during first career start When Esdon Boyd showed up at Pineville High School at the start of last season, the Rebels coaching staff didn t fully understand what it had. The 180-pound Boyd spent his junior season playing out of position as an undersized nose guard. He made two tackles, impressing coaches with his effort, and during the offseason he started to blossom. ROBBIE MARTIN Head coach, 7th season Northwestern State, overall at Pineville Robbie Martin is a name synonymous with Pineville football. He s been around the game and the team for the better part of three decades. A former player and defensive coordinator before becoming head coach, Martin bleeds cardinal and white. Martin was a standout offensive lineman at Pineville High, playing for the legendary Don Shows, before becoming a four-year letterman for Sam Goodwin at Northwestern State. Martin and the Demons won the Southland Conference championship in After serving as a student assistant under Goodwin in Natchitoches, Martin was an assistant at Buckeye High School for four years, serving as offensive line coach and defensive coordinator, before returning to his alma mater at Pineville. Boyd moved from the interior line outside to defensive end, and during the spring and summer blossomed into perhaps the Rebels best defensive player. That development was showcased against Captain Shreve, when Boyd led the Rebels with nine tackles, including five behind the line of scrimmage and two sacks. Coach Robbie Martin has said on several occasions that Boyd might be the Rebels best defensive player right now. Esdon is a football player, Rebels defensive coordinator John Muder said. The things he does you can t coach. Rebels seek return to playoffs for second straight season One year removed from their first trip to the Class 5A playoffs in seven seasons, the Pineville Rebels look for a return trip to the postseason in After losing their season opener on the road in 2014, the Rebels won five of their next six games and landed a spot in the playoffs despite dropping their final three games of the regular season. Seeded No. 29, the Rebels lost in the first round to eventual runner-up Destrehan. Limited experience returns, but Rebels boast several studs The Rebels return just seven starters off last season s team, including just three on the defensive side of the football. However, on offense, three of the team s stalwarts are back. Junior fullback Landon King and senior wingback Jarious Green return as a 1-2 tandem in the backfield after combining to rush for more 1,300 yards and 16 touchdowns in The 6-foot, 215-pound Green was a two-way standout, playing extensively in the defensive backfield as well as at running back. This year, however, he ll significantly reduce his responsibilities on defense, which should allow him to be more explosive and productive in King, a physical 6-1, 215-pound downhill runner, led the Rebels in both rushing and receiving last season and appears poised to become the first 1,000-yard rusher at Pineville since Derrick Milton in While with the Rebels, Martin served as the defensive coordinator under both Herbie Smith and Joining them in the offensive backfield is senior quarterback Clayton Wider, who Mike Richard from 1995 to 2009 before taking over as looks to become a more consistent threat passing the ball while also being the trigger-man head coach at his alma mater. of the Rebels flexbone option attack. Senior guard Dakota Cross is the only returning Martin became the interim head coach following starter on the offensive line. Richard s resignation four games into the 2009 season Defensively, senior middle linebacker Jacob Joffrion, who finished second on the team and succeeded him full time the following season. This last season with 70 tackles, returns to anchor the 5-2 front of new defensive coordinator season will be Martin s sixth as the Rebels full-time John Muder, a former standout linebacker at Pineville and Louisiana College. Joining head coach. Joffrion as returning starters on defense are senior safety Aaron Johnson (who led Pineville with two interceptions in 2014) and senior nose tackle Cha kel Williams.

Louisiana Tech, 2005 Week 2 Pineville Rebels at Tioga Indians Friday, Sept p.m. Offense switches to Georgia Tech flexbone formation Paul Johnson has built his career as a successful offensive coach while remaining one of the few coaches to rely on the flexbone triple option. Johnson, a former Navy assistant, first became a head coach at Georgia Southern. Johnson then returned to Navy and most recently moved to Georgia Tech, where he s been the head coach since 2008, making the Orange Bowl two times. This past offseason, the Rebels coaching staff adopted Johnson s flexbone as the team s main offensive identity, switching from a mostly I-formation and single-back attack. Clayton Wider has been tabbed as the team s main trigger-man in the flexbone, while fellow senior Kyle Adams also is expected to take snaps. Defensive coordinator John Muder returns home to Pineville John Muder is back home in the cardinal and white. The 1999 graduate of Pineville High School has returned to his alma mater as the Rebels defensive coordinator after spending the past five seasons as an assistant at Breaux Bridge. A standout linebacker who played for Herbie Smith, Muder became one of the best linebackers to ever suit up for Louisiana College during his standout four-year career with the Wildcats. A two-time all-conference player at LC, Muder finished his career with 181 career tackles. His total of 100 tackles as a senior in 2003 still ranks fourth in school history. Muder previously was defensive coordinator at Breaux Bridge, helping the Tigers to five consecutive Class 4A playoff appearances. The Tigers advanced to the semifinals in 2011, and were knocked out of the playoffs by state power Neville in three of the five years. Muder brings the 50 defense to D.C. Bill Bates Stadium Muder hopes bringing some of the concepts and schemes he learned during his five years in Breaux Bridge can help rejuvenate the Rebels defense as they compete in one of the state s toughest districts. The 50 defense features a five-man front, two linebackers and four players in the secondary. The interior of the defensive front features two defensive tackles and a nose guard, flanked by two defensive ends that are essentially hybrid outside linebackers who line up on the line of scrimmage. The middle of the defense features two linebackers and two safeties, with a cornerback on either side. Muder s new defense features a number of young players looking to make an immediate impact, as only seven seniors are on the Rebels twodeep depth chart. Offensive line has a massive hole to fill with Ford s graduation Last year s Pineville offense was fairly simple run the ball behind massive left tackle Cody Ford. The 6-3, 325-pound Ford could either dominate the defensive end in front of him or get up to the second level to punish linebackers. He was a dominant force who helped the Rebels rush for more than 2,000 yards last season. A three-star tackle, Ford was one of Louisiana s top 30 prospects and one of the top 60 offensive tackles in the nation, according to 247Sports.com. After graduating in May, he reported to Norman, Oklahoma, and has made an immediate impact on the Oklahoma Sooners offensive line. Ford is fighting hard for playing time as a true freshman and is expected to provide immediate depth his first year on campus. Unfortunately, the Rebels don t have Ford this year or anyone like him. Ford is now playing at the University of Oklahoma, and Pineville s front five averages only 215 pounds. The only returning starter on the front line is senior right guard Dakota Cross. The undersized, 215-pound guard will provide valuable leadership and experience on a unit that is lacking both.

4 Late rally lifts Jena past Tioga in Week 1 The Tioga Indians dropped their season opener last week when Jena scored the final 12 points of the game to rally for a victory on The Reservation. After an 80-yard touchdown pass from Logan Dubois to Hayden Weltz, the Indians held a lead in the third quarter. But Jena scored twice in the fourth quarter while keeping the Indians off the scoreboard. Lamar Farris hooked up with Jonovan Simmons on a 44-yard TD pass, but Tioga held on to a two-point lead when the Indians stopped Jordan Mitchell on a 2-point conversion attempt. The lead was short-lived, however, as the Giants moved ahead and grabbed the victory when Joe Knight broke free for a 58-yard touchdown. Knight finished with 109 rushing yards, while Farris threw three touchdown passes, including two to Simmons. The Indians, meanwhile, managed just 44 rushing yards in the game, and relied on the arm of Dubois, their junior signal-caller. Dubois completed 13 of 27 passes for 269 yards and three touchdowns. All of the scores went to Weltz, a senior, who caught five balls for 200 yards. Dubois also was intercepted three times by the Giants. Jimmerson s two TDs sparked Rebels last season Junior Quadrell Jimmerson may be the least-known of the Rebels starting trio of running backs, but his coming-out party last season lifted the Rebels to a home win over Tioga. The 5-foot-8, 150-pound Jimmerson rushed for 86 yards and two TDs to lead Pineville to a win over the Indians at D.C. Bill Bates Stadium last year in a game that was played on a Saturday afternoon because a lightning storm postponed the game from the night before. Tioga led 14-6 late in the first half when the Rebels got a much -needed spark from senior Josh Hayward, who returned a kickoff 83 yards to set up a 2-yard TD run by Landon King. Jimmerson had scored the Rebels first touchdown of the game, a 19-yarder, and he also scored the game-winner, a 7-yard run in the third quarter following a blocked punt by Pineville. Jarious Green also scored on a 45-yard run, one drive before Jimmerson s game-winner as the Rebels rallied from a deficit to pick up the victory. Jimmerson, Green (93 yards) and King (107 yards) all surpassed the 80-yard mark in the game as the Rebels rushed for 339 yards against the Indians. Rebels own the Tioga rivalry of late Pineville and Tioga are separated by just 5 miles, and the two schools have played annually for years, dating back to when they were district rivals. However, the Rebels have dominated the series in recent years. Last season s victory for the Rebels was the 14th in 15 seasons for Pineville, with the only loss during that time span coming in Tioga won that game as the Rebels went on to finish the season with a 1-9 record. Rebels coaches have ties to Tioga s staff Two members of the 2015 Pineville High football coaching staff have ties to either Tioga or Indians head coach Kevin Cook. Justin Webb, who is in his first season as the Rebels offensive line coach, spent the past three seasons at Tioga. Webb was the offensive coordinator for previous Indians head coach Patrick Garvin before moving over to Pineville at the end of the last school year. But Webb isn t the only former Tioga assistant on the Rebels staff. Outside linebackers coach Jason Covey, who also serves as Pineville s strength and conditioning coach, has ties to both Tioga and Cook. Prior to coming to Pineville in 2013, Covey spent two seasons on Cook s staff at Buckeye after spending six seasons as an assistant to Mike Cieslak at Tioga. In Covey s final season at Tioga, he worked with Cook, who was then the Indians defensive coordinator. Pineville, Tioga principals well versed in rivalry Not only do the coaching staffs have ties with one another, the principals at the two schools do, as well. Pineville principal Dr. Karl Carpenter spent 16 years as the band director at Tioga High School and also served as an assistant principal at the school for four years. He s now in his ninth year as the Rebels principal. His counterpart at Tioga, Alan LaCombe, also has seen the rivalry from both sides. LaCombe served as a defensive line coach under Robbie Martin at Pineville before moving into the administration at Tioga. Joe Bayone squares off against his mentor While several coaches and principals in this week s matchup have ties to the opponent, one Pineville coach will be squaring off against a man who has been extremely important in his football career. Pineville defensive line coach Joe Bayone will match wits against Tom O Kelley, the longtime head coach at Northwood-Lena who is now the Indians offensive coordinator. Bayone recalled first meeting O Kelley when he was a middleschooler in Lena and dressed on the Gators varsity football squad. After moving to Oklahoma for several years, Bayone returned to Northwood and played for O Kelley during his junior and senior seasons ( ). Bayone went on to play on Mississippi College s American Southwest Conference championship team in 1997, making 86 tackles during his career with the Choctaws from Bayone also finished his career with 18 tackles for loss, two sacks, four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. His best season came his final year in 2000, when he made 53 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, one sack, forced four fumbles and recovered two fumbles.

10 Week 1: Pineville 17, Captain Shreve 0 Pineville 17 September 4, 2015 Bates Stadium Captain Shreve 0 Strong defensive showing leads Rebels to shutout victory in season opener Jarious Green rushed for two touchdowns, and the Pineville Rebels defense of new coordinator John Muder pitched a shutout in a 17-0 win over Captain Shreve last week at D.C. Bill Bates Stadium. Muder s defense set the tone early with a safety on Captain Shreve s first possession, and the Gators never got going offensively. Julian Charles returned the opening kickoff 99 yards for an apparent touchdown for the Gators, but a holding penalty negated the long return. Captain Shreve never really threatened again. Pineville s defense pushed the Gators back 11 yards over the next three plays, and sophomore linebacker Jordan Brown tackled Camron Davis in the end zone to give the Rebels (1-0) the early lead. Green, the Rebels senior running back, scored from 3 yards out on the final offensive play of the first quarter to give Pineville a 9-0 lead, and Green broke free for a 17-yard touchdown with 4:55 to play in the first half to put the Rebels ahead Pineville slogged its way through the rest of the game offensively, but the Rebels defense was more than up to the challenge. Captain Shreve managed just 57 yards of offense on 57 plays in the game, and Damarcus McCall gained all of them on a run late in the first half, breaking free of two Rebel defenders and sprinting deep into Pineville territory. We had it for no gain, and a couple of people knocked each other out of the play, Pineville coach Robbie Martin said. That scoring threat came up empty for the Gators when junior safety Matthew Sylvia stepped in front of a Luke Leggio pass near the goal line to make an interception. Outside of McCall s long run, Captain Shreve netted zero yards on its 56 remaining plays. The defense got that egg, said senior defensive end Esdon Boyd, who made two sacks and five tackles for loss Friday night. That s all we care about. We worked our butt off. We were fantastic defensively all game, Martin said. Pineville s power running attack was grounded for most of the game by Captain Shreve s anticipatory defense. The Gators jumped the snap count, sending linebackers and knocking off the timing of the Rebels flexbone offense. Gator linebacker Ashton Lacaze was particularly outstanding, finishing the game with 14 tackles, a sack and three tackles for loss. Pineville finished the game with 248 yards of offense, including 181 yards rushing on 50 carries. Green led the Rebels with 55 yards on 11 carries, while senior quarterback Clayton Wider had 52 yards on 19 carries and junior fullback Landon King finished with 50 yards on 14 rushes. Wider also passed for 67 yards. The Rebels fumbled the football seven times, with six of them being recovered by Captain Shreve. We need to step up our game, senior right guard Dakota Cross said. Complete more passes, run the ball better (and) definitely hold it better. We have to work on the little things. If you do enough little things wrong, it becomes a big problem. Though his team s offense struggled, Martin said he was pleased the Rebels began the season with a one in the win column rather than a loss like last season. Any win against a 5A opponent is satisfying, Martin said. I thought the second half was one of the ugliest games I ve ever seen. Both defenses dominated the offenses.
