Overall Record: (11th season) #1 KENTUCKY WILDCATS (29-0, 16-0) Head Coach: John Calipari Record at UK: (6th season). Overall Record: (23rd season) about this game Georgia plays its final home game of the regular season in a Tuesday night contest against Kentucky. It s the return matchup from four weeks ago, when the Wildcats defeated Georgia in Lexington on Feb. 3. The Bulldogs arrive at this game with a 19-9 overall record, 10-6 in SEC games. Most recently, they defeated Missouri in Athens three days ago. The victory gave Georgia double-digit SEC wins for the second straight year, an accomplishment enjoyed just one previous time in program history ( ). Georgia begins this week still in contention for a Top 4 finish in the SEC standings and therefore, a double-bye at the league s tournament next week in Nashville. The Bulldogs are currently in a 3-way tie with LSU, which would win any tie-breaker with UGA, and Ole Miss, which UGA swept this season. Tuesday s game is the 145th all-time meeting between these two schools in basketball. Kentucky leads the series, as it does against all of its longtime SEC brethren, by a lopsided count: Tuesday s game will mark the 16th time that Georgia has ever played the nation s No. 1-ranked team. It has yet to win such a contest. Its last matchup against a top-ranked foe came in the teams earlier game in Lexington. Before that, it occurred on Nov. 19, 2012, when the Bulldogs dropped a decision to Indiana in Brooklyn, N.Y. Tonight also marks the final home game for seniors Nemi Djurisic, Taylor Echols and Marcus Thornton. They will be honored in a pre-game ceremony. Kentucky leads the series, as it does against all of its longtime SEC brethren, by a lopsided count: > Though Georgia has defeated Kentucky just 26 times ever, nine of those wins have come in the past 13 years. > A geographical breakdown of the series follows: Games in Athens: UK leads Games in Lexington: UK leads 58-5 Neutral-Court Games: UK leads 9-3 SEC Tournament Games: UK leads 6-1 UK has also won single games in Atlanta, Baton Rouge; Columbus, Ga.; Knoxville; Memphis; Nashville and Owensboro, Ky. noteworthy... > Some leftovers from the Missouri game: 1) Missouri s 44 points were the fewest by an SEC team during the Mark Fox era at UGA. 2) The 24-point margin was the largest in an SEC win during the Fox era. 3) Charles Mann did not attempt a free throw for the first time in 88 games, going back to a Nov. 30, 2012 game at South Florida. That s a significant number for someone that ranked 20th among all NCAA Division I players in total free throw attempts before Saturday s game. > The win last week at Ole Miss assured Georgia of at least a.500 record in SEC play for the third straight year and fourth of six seasons under Mark Fox. Not since the seasons has UGA strung together three marks of.500 or better. This latest string is the sixth time the Georgia program has ever had three straight years of.500 or better SEC records. > Georgia s next victory will give the program its 13th season of 20 wins. Additionally, it will be just the second time ever that Georgia has strung together 20-win seasons consecutively. Tubby Smith and Ron Jirsa guided three straight Georgia teams to at least 20 victories in > Georgia now has a 7-4 road record overall, 5-3 in SEC games. Both the overall total road wins and total of SEC road wins are the most since No Georgia team has ever won six SEC road games, a feat this team will have an opportunity to do next Saturday at Auburn. > Getting a healthy roster has been a season-long challenge for Georgia. The last time the Bulldogs achieved 100 percent operating capacity was during the first 12 minutes of the SEC opener vs. Arkansas on Jan. 6, before Kenny Paul Geno broke his left wrist in a first-half tumble. All told, Georgia begins this week having accumulated 29 injury- or illness-caused s this season: 12 games missed by Juwan Parker (Achilles) 11 games missed by Kenny Paul Geno (broken wrist) 2 games each missed by Marcus Thornton (concussion) and Cameron Forte (flu) 1 game each missed by Yante Maten (concussion) and J.J. Frazier (concussion, fractures). All of this discussion excludes any mention of Kenny Gaines, who has played in every game despite pre-season illnesses and a shoulder sprain in mid-december. > Thus far, Georgia has continued one of its trademarks from last season: getting to the FT line. The Bulldogs rank 2nd in the SEC (16th in NCAA) in total free throw attempts, despite 10 of the league s 14 teams having played one more game than Georgia. Georgia has also made a 440 free throws, 3rd in the SEC and 22nd nationally. > Four-fifths of Georgia s starting unit comprise one of the most experienced groups in the SEC. The seniors (Thornton & Djurisic) and juniors (Mann & Gaines) enter Tuesday s game with a combined 437 career games played, 263 starts and nearly 10,400 minutes played. > When Georgia defeated Tennessee on Feb. 7, head coach Mark Fox joined a short list of coaches that have won 100 games at UGA. The first to do it was Herman J. Stegeman, namesake of the Bulldogs home court, who went over 12 seasons ( ). Next was Harbin Red Lawson -- who split his time teaching Phys Ed and coaching the Bulldogs -- needing 12 of his 14 seasons ( ) to reach 100 wins. Lastly, Hugh Durham -- considered the father of modern-era basketball at UGA, went in 17 seasons ( ). Last Saturday Fox reached another important marker. He evened his SEC record over 5+ seasons at UGA to The significance of this ledger comes with the fact that no Georgia basketball coach with at least five seasons of tenure has ever finished with an SEC record over.500.

According to the official NCAA-recognized RPI formula, Georgia s schedule is currently the 47th most difficult in the country, third best among SEC teams. ESPN.com s Basketball Power Index (BPI) -- which takes many more factors into consideration -- rates Georgia s schedule 8th toughest in the country, 2nd among SEC teams. Georgia s season-opening game at rival Georgia Tech was the earliest meeting ever between the two schools, who have played each other a total of 191 times. Participation in the NIT Season Tip-Off, which guarantees that the Bulldogs will face perennial power Gonzaga and another top-flight opponent in New York in late November. The return to Athens of traditional SEC foes Kentucky, Florida and Tennessee. In a rare quirk of scheduling, none of these three visited Athens last season, the first time it had happened since Regular-season series against SEC opponents Auburn, Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. Long a staple of the SEC schedule, the Wednesday night game has nearly vanished from the Bulldogs 2015 slate. Of their nine mid-week contests, just three will be played on Wednesday, all on the road: 1/14 at Vandy; 2/11 at Texas A&M; and 2/25 at Ole Miss. Four non-conference games against teams which played in the NCAA Tournament last season. Additional opponents that played post-season games last season include Kentucky (NCAA), Florida (NCAA), Tennessee (NCAA), LSU (NIT), Arkansas (NIT), Missouri (NIT), St. John s (NIT), Minnesota (NIT), Stony Brook (CBI), Texas A&M (CBI), UTC (CollegeInsider) and Norfolk State (CollegeInsider). Among the conferences represented in Georgia s non-conference schedule include: > ACC (Ga. Tech) > Big Ten (Minnesota) > Pac-12 (Colorado) > Big 12 (Kansas State) > Big East (St. John s, Seton Hall) > America East (Stony Brook) > West Coast (Gonzaga) When Georgia played at Kansas State on New Year s Eve afternoon, it was a red-letter date for head coach Mark Fox. The Garden City, Kan., native returned to home territory, back to a school where he worked as a young assistant 20 years ago. Fox served seven seasons ( ) under Tom Asbury on the Wildcats coaching staff. The Dec. 31 game was also Georgia s first-ever trip to Manhattan. The two teams will return the game in Athens next season at a date to be determined. about the nit season tipoff... 5 Georgia Basketball Update - Game 29 never advanced to New York among the final four teams, when teams reached NYC by winning preliminary rounds. When Georgia played Gonzaga on Nov. 26 in New York, it marked the program s eighth trip to the metro area for competition. Bulldog teams have played six previous games in Madison Square Garden: vs. NYU on Dec. 20, 1948 (L/72-83) vs. Purdue on Mar. 22, 1982 (L/60-61) vs. Penn State on Mar. 24, 1998 (L/60-66) vs. Fresno State on Mar. 26, 1998 (W/95-79) vs. Texas on Nov. 15, 2002 (L/71-77) vs. St. John s on Dec. 9, 2009 (L/56-66) Georgia has made the post-season NIT Final Four twice: in 1982 (lost to Purdue) and again in 1998 (lost to Penn State before defeating Fresno State in the long since defunct consolation game). mann named coaches' all-sec No question that junior guard Charles Mann has earned the favor of all 14 SEC head basketball coaches. For the third straight year, he has received some kind of all-star recognition from this group. As the season commences, Mann was named to the 9-man Coaches Pre-Season All-SEC First Team. This group also named him in 2013 to its SEC All-Freshman team, and last year the coaches annointed him to their post-season All-SEC second team. Mann led Georgia in scoring, assists, steals and minutes played last season. He also ranked among the top 20 nationally in free throws made and attempted. The 9-man Coaches All-SEC team follows: > Mann > Dorian Finney-Smith, Florida > Michael Frazier II, Florida > Aaron Harrison, Kentucky > Andrew Harrison, Kentucky > Damian Jones, Vanderbilt > Jordan Mickey, LSU > Bobby Portis, Arkansas > Jarvis Summers, Ole Miss landmarks to look for in 2015 With veterans playing key roles for the Bulldogs in 2015, it s nearing time for several to approach individual landmarks in their respective careers. Leading active career scorers: Nemi Djurisic: 1070 points (126 games) Charles Mann: 988 points (93 games) Kenny Gaines: 855 points (90 games) Leading active career rebounders: Marcus Thornton: 624 rebs. Leading active career assists: Charles Mann: 290 assists (93 games) *Note: UGA s No. 10 career assist leader, Donald Hartry, has 355 assists. *One additional note: if he completes the season in sound health, Marcus Thornton will likely set the UGA career record for most games played. The current mark, owned by G.G. Smith and Michael Chadwick ( ) is 129. Thorton began this season having played in 102 games. free throws a key in 2014 A vital element in Georgia s ability to win 20 games last season was its advantage at the free-throw line. The Bulldogs ranked 17th nationally in FT attempts (941 or 27.7/game) and 30th in FTs made (642 or 18.9/game). Each figure was signficantly better than their opponents average. They also shattered single-season school records in the respective categories and tied the school single-game record for attempts (50 vs. South Carolina). Leading the way was point guard Charles Mann, who attempted nearly 30 percent of the team s foul shots, was second in the SEC and 10th nationally in that category. big opportunity for thornton % 21% Marcus Thornton returns % for his senior season, capping a career the started back in the summer of The Atlanta native was awarded an extra year of eligibility via medical redshirt after he played in nine games of the 2013 season. The fifth year has given Thornton an opportunity to join a very short list of UGA basketball alumni: those who have played on at least three Bulldog teams to win 20 games. Of the hundreds of UGA hoops alums that span the past 110 years, only five can say that they played on three 20-game-winning squads: those that were underclassmen on the 1996 Georgia team. Larry Brown, Michael Chadwick, Ray Harrison, Jon Nordin and G.G. Smith played on three consecutive teams that won at least 20 games. If Georgia is fortunate enough to reach that landmark this season, Thornton would join that list. 80 dogs projected 5th in SEC by blue ribbon Georgia which tied for second in the SEC race a season ago, has been projected to finish fifth in 2015, according to Blue Ribbon Basketball Yearbook, which enjoys a biblical reputation among the world of college hoops.
