Memphis outscored UTEP in the second half. The Miners led at the midway point, holding the Tigers to 32 percent shooting from the field. They couldn t sustain the defensive effort for the full 40 minutes, however, as Memphis shot a blistering 59.1 percent in the second stanza. UTEP s three-point halftime lead was lost in the first minute and two seconds of the second half. After Shawn Taggart dunked 28 seconds in to make the score 30-29, Evans scored a layup with 18:58 to play to put the Tigers ahead The Miners regained the lead on a three pointer by Tavaris Watts with 18:28 remaining before Memphis went on a 16-5 run to build a cushion with 13:02 to go. The Tigers led by at least four points the rest of the way. UTEP shot 50 percent in the first half but was only 9-for-29 from the floor (31 percent) in the second period. The Miners leading scorer, Stefon Jackson, was 6-for-8 in the first half and 5-for-17 in the second half on his way to 24 points. Randy Culpepper finished with 13 points and Watts chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds off the bench. LOOKING BACK UTEP rode a tenacious effort defensively and on the boards to a conquest of Southern Miss on Saturday at the Don Haskins Center. The Miners held the Golden Eagles to 38 percent shooting but, more importantly, outrebounded them Southern Miss entered the game rated second in the league in rebound margin (+7.9 per game). UTEP never trailed and built a 13-point lead with 7:43 to play. Southern Miss hung around but couldn t get closer than six points the rest of the way. UTEP had two new starters Isaac Gordon, who filled in for the injured Christian Polk at shooting guard, and Jeremy Williams, who replaced Derrick Caracter up front. Both Gordon and Williams were making their first starts in a Miner uniform. Arnett Moultrie was the only UTEP starter to score in double figures, finishing with 15 points. Williams chipped in with nine points and four rebounds, and Julyan Stone tied his career-high with 10 rebounds. Caracter took well to his role as a sixth man, collecting 11 points and eight rebounds in 17 minutes. Gary Flowers had 17 points to lead Southern Miss, and Buchi Awaji added 10 off the bench. 3 KEYS TO SUCCESS Here are some key statistics for the Miners this season: UTEP is 8-0 when Arnett Moultrie shoots 50 percent or better from the floor UTEP is 7-0 when Julyan Stone collects five or more rebounds UTEP is 11-2 when out-shooting its opponent and 0-3 when shooting a lesser percentage UTEP is 7-1 when taking more foul shots than the opposition UTEP is 9-1 when outrebounding foes UTEP is 8-1 when having a positive assist/turnover ratio UTEP is 11-1 when allowing fewer than 80 points and 0-4 when yielding 80 or more UTEP is 11-1 when leading at halftime CULPEPPER EIGHTH ON SCORING LIST Randy Culpepper is in eighth place on UTEP s all-time scoring list with 1,333 points. He has passed 19 players on the list since the season started. UTEP Career Scoring Leaders Player Seasons Points 1. Stefon Jackson , Brandon Wolfram , Antoine Gillespie , Tim Hardaway , Nate Archibald , Dave Feitl , Roy Smallwood , Randy Culpepper 2007-Present 1,333 CULPEPPER IN A SHOOTING SLUMP Randy Culpepper is 6-for-33 (.181) from the field and 3-for-18 (.167) from three-point range over the last three games, scoring a total of 25 points -- dropping his scoring average from 18.2 ppg to 16.3 ppg. He has had back-to-back games scoring single-digit points for the first time since March of Culpepper s six points versus Southern Miss on Saturday marked his lowest total since March 4, 2009 against UAB (four points), a game in which he was limited to 15 minutes due to foul trouble. The 25 points are the fewest in a threegame stretch for Culpepper since totaling 23 versus Tulsa (3), Southern Miss (12) and Memphis (8) in late January and early February of MINERS WEATHER CULPEPPER S OFF-SHOOTING NIGHTS One might think that a cold-shooting Randy Culpepper would be a recipe for disaster for the Miners, but UTEP is actually 5-2 over the last two seasons when he has scored less than 10 points (1-1 in ). Defense has made the difference, as the Miners have yielded an average of 60.1 points in games where their star guard has struggled. 4 NO SUCH SLUMP FOR CULPEPPER ON THE DEFENSIVE END OF THE FLOOR Coach Tony Barbee has praised Randy Culpepper for not letting his recent shooting difficulties affect his usual ball-hawking defense. Culpepper has had multiple steals in each of the last three games (nine total), increasing his team-leading tally to 30. Culpepper owns 151 career thefts, the fifth-best total in school history, and needs just three more to tie Johnny Melvin and Prince Stewart for third place on the list. Tim Hardaway is UTEP s all-time leader for takeaways with 262. CARACTER FLOURISHES IN SIXTH MAN ROLE Derrick Caracter came off the bench for the first time in nine games against Southern Miss on Saturday and had a highly productive 17 minutes, collecting 11 points and eight rebounds. He was particularly big in the second half (nine points and seven boards in 13 minutes). Caracter has averaged 13.0 ppg and 11.5 rpg in his last two games off the pine, including a 15-point, 15-rebound effort versus Mississippi on Dec. 16. By pulling down eight rebounds against Southern Miss, he snapped a string of four consecutive games in which he was held to six boards or fewer (Caracter had at least 10 rebounds in each of the preceding five outings). Caracter would rank third in C-USA in rebounding (8.3 avg.) and field goal percentage (.577) had he played in 75 percent of the team s games. Caracter would reach that benchmark against UAB on Jan. 30. THAT S THE ARNETT WE REMEMBER Arnett Moultrie looked a lot like his freshman self on Jan. 13 at Houston, leading the team with 15 points and 13 rebounds. It was only his second double-double in 15 games after totaling six in the second-most by a freshman in school history. It also ended a 13-game drought without a double-double for Moultrie, the longest of his young career. Moultrie is one of only 33 players in school history to compile eight or more double doubles, and one of only 19 Miners to achieve the feat since Moultrie, who has 13 double-figure scoring games this season, has scored 15 points in back-to-back contests, marking the first time he has tallied as many points in consecutive outings. SCORING FIREPOWER SHIFTS TO THE FRONTCOURT UTEP has been led in scoring by a frontcourt player in each of the last five games and eight of 16 contests this season. Prior to Derrick Caracter scoring a game-high 21 points versus Alcorn State on Dec. 19, UTEP had been led in scoring by a guard in 102 of the first 108 games under coach Tony Barbee. HIGH-FLYING UTEP OFFENSE GROUNDED IN C-USA PLAY UTEP averaged 81.4 points and shot 47.2 percent from the field in its 13 nonconference games, but the Miners haven t carried that type of productivity over to league action just yet. UTEP is averaging 56.7 ppg in C-USA play with a.424 field goal percentage and an ice-cold.188 (9-for-48) three-point field goal percentage. Guards Randy Culpepper, Isaac Gordon, Christian Polk, Julyan Stone and Myron Strong are a combined 21-for-65 (.323) from the field in C-USA play. MINERS GRINDING OUT WINS THIS SEASON UTEP was under Tony Barbee when scoring less than 70 points entering this season, but the Miners are 3-1 in such a situation in with victories over Air Force, SMU and Southern Miss. In fact, UTEP was held to less than 60 points in all three of those games -- largely due to the deliberate playing style of their opponent. The last time UTEP won three games in a season when scoring less than 60 points was , when this happened on five occasions. After scoring 80 points in eight of their first 10 games, the Miners have averaged 63.8 in their last six. UTEP GETS BACK ON BOARD(S) AGAINST SOUTHERN MISS The Miners snapped a four-game streak in which they were outrebounded by the opposition -- tying their longest skid of the Tony Barbee era -- in emphatic fashion against Southern Miss. UTEP out-boarded the Golden Eagles, who had a rebound margin of +7.9 coming into the game, Southern Miss had outrebounded 12 of its first 16 opponents. The 24 boards were a season-low for the Golden Eagles, surpassing the 26 they snagged at Montana State on Nov. 21. A key to UTEP s rebounding attack versus USM was guard Julyan Stone tying his career-high with 10 boards -- all defensive. He also had 10 rebounds at Texas Southern on Dec. 29, MINERS GETTING TO THE LINE UTEP has attempted 30 or more foul shots in two of the last three games after reaching that benchmark just once in the first 13 outings. The Miners were 27-for-38 at the stripe versus BYU and 21-for-33 against Southern Miss. UTEP is in the Tony Barbee era when going to the line 30 or more times, but 22-6 in home games. The Miners 33-9 edge in free throw attempts versus Southern Miss gave them a advantage on their opponents for the season. UTEP RACKING UP THE TAKEAWAYS The Miners have recorded 148 steals this season, the third-best tally in C-USA behind Houston s 187 and Memphis 171. With basically a half-season left to play, UTEP has a shot at breaking the school seasonal standard for takeaways, 284 in MINERS GO WIRE-TO-WIRE UTEP s victory over Southern Miss on Saturday marked the seventh game this season that the Miners haven t trailed in. UTEP led wire-to-wire in only five contests all of last season. The Miners have led in every game this season and have led in the second half in three of their five losses. UTEP led New Mexico State with under four minutes to play, Mississippi with a minute to go and Texas Tech with 4:04 on the clock before dropping all three games. DEFENSE MAKES THE DIFFERENCE UTEP is under Tony Barbee when allowing less than 80 points and has won 26 straight games when holding foes under 70. Overall UTEP is 38-1 since the start of the season when giving up less than 70 points. UTEP is 1-29 under Barbee when yielding 80 or more. The only win was an victory over Houston on March 8, 2008 at the Haskins Center. BARBEE THIRD IN WINS AT UTEP Tony Barbee has posted 67 wins as head coach of the Miners. Only Don Haskins (719 wins) and George McCarty (77 wins) recorded more victories at the helm of the program. MINERS HAVE EXPERIENCE Eleven players on UTEP s roster have combined to make 323 starts at the Division I level -- Julyan Stone (77), Arnett Moultrie (50), Christian Polk (41), Randy Culpepper (36), Myron Strong (26), Derrick Caracter (22), Jeremy Williams (19), Wayne Portalatin (17), Claude Britten (16), Isaac Gordon (11) and Gabriel McCulley (eight).
