1 GAME NOTES MINERS VS. WKU / FEB. 6, 2016 / 3 P.M. MT / DON HASKINS CENTER OPENING TIP UTEP (12-11, 4-6 C-USA) welcomes back the Texas Western Miners for the 50th anniversary of their historic championship season on Saturday. The Miners will take on WKU (12-11, 4-6 C-USA) at 3 p.m. before a national television (FOX Sports 1) audience. The game will feature a unique lineup introduction featuring the starters from both the and squads, a halftime celebration featuring local and national recognition for the team, and special video board elements throughout the course of the afternoon. The Haskins Center will also be striped out with fans wearing either orange or blue t-shirts in every other section. The Miners have won 12 of their last 13 C-USA home games, including Thursday s triumph over Marshall. WKU brings a 2-7 road record into Saturday s game. The Hilltoppers are 2-4 away from home in league action, including an victory at UTSA on Thursday. ABOUT WKU The Hilltoppers lost three starters from last year s club and, like UTEP, have hung around the.500 mark this season. Sophomore forward Justin Johnson leads the way with 16.0 points and 7.7 rebounds per contest. The Hazard, Ky. native has made a major leap statistically after averaging 4.8 points and 15.5 minutes per outing as a freshman. Senior guard Aaron Cosby (11.7 ppg) and junior guard Fredrick Edmond (11.0 ppg) also have double-figure scoring averages. Johnson is second in C-USA in field goal percentage (.614), sixth in rebounding and seventh in scoring. Senior forward Nigel Snipes is third in three-point field goal percentage (.427), junior forward Ben Lawson is third in blocked shots (2.3 bpg) and Cosby is fourth in free throw percentage (.833). Johnson is 15th in the nation in field goal percentage, and Lawson is 27th in blocks. WKU is the top rebounding team in the league with a margin of +5.5 per outing. The Hilltoppers are second in C-USA in rebound margin for league games only (+7.0) behind Old Dominion (+8.1). WKU has outrebounded nine of 10 C-USA opponents and pounded UTSA on the glass, 43-24, on Thursday. SERIES NOTES The Miners are 0-2 versus WKU. The first meeting was on Dec. 19, 1969 at the Jayhawk Classic in Lawrence, Kan. (the Hilltoppers won 78-59). Last year WKU upended UTEP in Bowling Green, Ky. by the count of in overtime. THE LAST MEETING Chris Harrison-Docks scored six of his 12 points in overtime, including the go-ahead three pointer with 1:24 remaining, as WKU took sole possession of first place in C-USA with a win over UTEP on Jan. 22, 2015 at E.A. Diddle Arena. The Hilltoppers won their eighth straight game, battling back from a 10-point second half deficit to beat the Miners. UTEP was 0-for-17 from three-point range, made 12-of-24 free throws (7-of-16 after halftime) and was outrebounded UTEP played perhaps its best half of the season in staking itself to a lead at the break. The Miners quickly reinstated a 10-point lead (40-30) three minutes into the second half when Vince Hunter converted a three-point play. Then it started to unravel. WKU went on an 11-1 run, knotting the game at 41 on a layup by George Fant with 13:48 to go. It was nip and tuck the remainder of regulation, with neither team leading by more than two points. Fant, who recorded a double-double for the seventh straight game (13 points/11 rebounds), picked up his fourth personal with 9:38 left. He went to the bench and didn t return until the 3:41 mark. The Miners didn t capitalize in his absence, largely because they couldn t make foul shots. They missed seven of their first 11 attempts from the stripe in the second half. After a stretch of 3:36 where neither team scored and WKU held on for dear life with a lead, Earvin Morris was fouled by D.J. Clayton on a three-point attempt. One second remained. Morris went to the line. He missed the first, but made the second and third to force overtime. UTEP never led in the extra session. The game was tied at 63 when Harrison-Docks nailed the big triple with 1:24 to go. Cedrick Lang led five Miners in double figures with 14 points. After shooting the ball well early, the Miners cooled off to 35.3 percent (12-for-34) in the second half and overtime. They scored just nine points in the final 9:38 of the contest (last 4:38 of the second half and 5:00 in overtime). LAST GAME UTEP 112, MARSHALL 108 Dominic Artis scored 25 of his career-high 33 points in the second half as UTEP outraced Marshall, , with members of the 1966 national championship team in attendance on Thursday. The Miners battled back from 14 down over the final 18 minutes in one of the most exciting games ever played in the Don Haskins Center. It marked the first time that UTEP was involved in a regulation game where two teams scored 100 points since Jan. 9, 1961, when it lost at Arizona State That was the year before the legendary Don Haskins took the helm of the program. The 112 points were the third-most scored in school history and the most since Dec. 30, 2000, when UTEP routed New Mexico Highlands in the Don. The 65 second-half points were the second-most in the record book behind the 78 versus Highlands. Artis became the first Miner player to score 30 points in a game since Randy Culpepper tallied 33 versus Houston on Feb. 19, But he had more than enough support from Earvin Morris (20 points), Lee Moore (17), Omega Harris (15) and Terry Winn, who scored all 13 of his points in the second half. The Miners shot 61.8 percent in the second half, outscoring the Herd to wipe out a deficit. UTEP started to make its move with 12:11 remaining, trailing Artis made a three-pointer to begin a 10-0 run that put the Miners ahead (81-80) for the first time since late in the first half. Artis scored seven of the 10 points during the run. After UTEP extended its lead to seven (92-85), the Herd came storming back. A 10-2 spurt ended with a three-point play by Ryan Taylor. Marshall was back in front with 5:40 to go. The Herd still led by one ( ) with 1:08 to play after Jon Elmore hit a couple of free throws. Moore broke the tie and gave UTEP the lead for good on two foul shots of his own with 51 seconds left. The Miners scored their last six points at the line over the final 1:26 with reserve Tevin Caldwell taking an active role, securing two crucial offensive boards off missed free throws to extend possessions. The second half alone featured nine ties and 15 lead changes. The game was fairly even statistically. UTEP shot 56.1 percent, Marshall 53.5 percent. Rebounds were in favor of the Herd. Both teams made 11 three-pointers. Artis followed up a near triple-double at LA Tech with the 33 points, nine rebounds and three assists. Vint Field goal % * Top-15 in C-USA only TEAM NOTEBOOK The Miners finished 28-1 and captured the national championship, beating top-ranked Kentucky in the title game. On that day (March 19, 1966), Don Haskins became the first coach to start five African-American players in the championship game. Haskins was the head coach at UTEP for 38 years and compiled 719 victories. He is in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Kentucky, coached by Adolph Rupp, had five white starters. The events of the championship season were depicted in the 2006 Disney motion picture Glory Road. To this day UTEP remains the only Division I school in the state of Texas to capture a men s basketball NCAA championship. Texas Western winning the championship started the integration of college athletics. The Southeastern Conference admitted their first African-American basketball player in The star of the Texas Western team was the late All-American guard Bobby Joe Hill, who scored 20 points in the title game. Hill s two steals and layups on back-to-back possessions in the first half spurred the Miners to victory. The Kentucky roster featured Pat Riley, Louie Dampier and Larry Conley. Other stars of the Texas Western team were David Lattin, Orsten Artis and Nevil Shed who all had double-figure scoring averages for the season. Harry Flournoy averaged a team-leading 10.7 rebounds per outing. NOTING THE MINERS UTEP scored 100 points in a game for the first time since Feb. 13, 2010 versus Marshall on Thursday. Omega Harris leads UTEP with a 15.7 ppg scoring average in home games, shooting 52.2 percent from the field and 49 percent from three. On the road Harris averages 5.8 ppg, with a.333 field goal percentage and.385 three-point percentage. Lee Moore has an assist/turnover ratio of 47/21 in home games. His assist/turnover ratio is 15/21 in road games. Jake Flaggert has made 13-of-26 three-point shots (.500) in the Haskins Center this season. On the road he has shot 26.7 percent (4-for-15) from beyond the arc. The Miners have used 12 different starting lineup combinations this season and have started 11 different players. UTEP has scored 80+ points eight times this season. It s the most 80-point games for the Miners since (12). UTEP s top six scorers account for 85.3 percent (1,482-of-1,737) of the team s total points. They have accounted for 89.5 percent of the points (666-of-744) in C-USA play. A Miner player has had a double-double in seven of the last 12 games (including Dominic Artis and Hooper Vint three times each), something that happened just once in the first 11 contests. UTEP has won 19 straight games dating back to the season when shooting 30+ foul shots. Against Marshall, UTEP rallied from a doubledigit deficit to win for the ninth time under coach Tim Floyd. The Miners also scored their biggest comeback victory over Floyd earlier this season, down 17 in an eventual 99-90, double overtime triumph. NOTING THE BACKCOURT Four UTEP guards have had a 20-point game this season. Dominic Artis and Lee Moore top the squad with three 20-point games, while Earvin Morris has had two and Omega Harris has had one. Lee Moore is first on the team in scoring (13.9 ppg), double figure scoring games (18) and number of games leading the team in scoring (10). After shooting 36.1 percent (13-for-36) from the field in the Miners first four C-USA games, Lee Moore has made 27-of-49 shots (.551) in the last six league contests UTEP BASKETBALL Lee Moore is the first Miner guard with 100+ free throw attempts in a season (130) since Michael Perez in (109). The 130 free throw attempts are the most by a UTEP guard since the season when Randy Culpepper had 203 attempts and Julyan Stone had 139. Lee Moore has attempted 10 or more foul shots in six games. Omega Harris is shooting 47.2 percent (17- for-36) from beyond the arc in C-USA play, thirdbest in the league. Over the last six games, Omega Harris has made 12-of-19 three-pointers (.632). Omega Harris has made a three pointer in 10 consecutive games, a career-long streak. It s the longest streak by a UTEP player since Jacques Streeter during the campaign (14 in a row). Omega Harris has made 17 of his last 19 free throws (.895). Omega Harris is 26-for-31 from the line (.839) in his last 19 games versus C-USA opponents dating back to last season. In the NM State game on Dec. 19, Omega Harris became the sixth player to score 20+ points off the bench in a game since Tim Floyd became head coach of the Miners. Oregon transfer Dominic Artis has posted career-highs in points (33 versus Marshall), assists (nine against Texas State, Alcorn State and LA Tech) and rebounds (12 versus Sam Houston State) this season. Dominic Artis became the 22nd Miner player to score 30 points in a game against Marshall on Thursday. Against UTRGV on Dec. 29, Dominic Artis became the seventh Miner to hit seven threepointers in a game, joining Miguel Ayala, Randy Culpepper, Omar Duran, Antoine Gillespie, Mark Ingles and Jarvis Mullahon. Dominic Artis has compiled seven games with eight or more rebounds and three with 10 or more. Dominic Artis tops all UTEP guards with eight games leading the team in rebounding. Dominic Artis has led the Miners in points, rebounds, assists and steals twice this season (at NM State, at LA Tech), the only player to achieve the feat in Dominic Artis has come close to posting a triple-double three times this season. Jason Williams is the lone Miner to record a tripledouble after tallying 17 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists versus Lipscomb in the NIT on March 14, Artis had 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists in the opener versus Loyola. He had 21 points, eight rebounds and eight assists against UTRGV. He had 23 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists at LA Tech. Dominic Artis has dished out 112 assists this season. The distribution by player: Hooper Vint (26), Lee Moore and Earvin Morris (19), Terry Winn (16), Omega Harris (11), Jake Flaggert (six), Tevin Caldwell (five), Paul Thomas (three), Brodricks Jones, Christian Romine & Trey Touchet (two) and Matt Willms (one). With Dominic Artis and Lee Moore, UTEP is on pace to have two players with 100 assists for the first time since when Randy Culpepper, Christian Polk and Julyan Stone all achieved the feat. Earvin Morris has made 35-of-73 shots (.479) over the last seven games, scoring in double figures six times during that span. In the previous eight contests he shot 21-for-65 (.323). 5 Earvin Morris dished out a career-high six assists against Marshall on Thursday. Jake Flaggert has a team-high 15 charges drawn in 22 games. NOTING THE FRONTCOURT Hooper Vint has scored in double figures 13 times in Entering the season, Vint had one double-figure scoring game in his career. After scoring in double figures in five consecutive games from Jan. 3-21, Hooper Vint has gone four straight games scoring in single digits for the first time this season. Hooper Vint is fifth in C-USA in blocked shots (1.7 avg.) for league games only. Hooper Vint blocked a career-high six shots at UAB, most by a UTEP player since John Bohannon had seven at Middle Tennessee on Jan. 16, Hooper Vint is the sixth Miner player to block six shots in a game (George Banks, John Bohannon, Wayne Campbell, Brian Stewart, David Van Dyke). Hooper Vint is 18-for-19 from the foul line over the last eight games (.947). Hooper Vint has made 12 consecutive foul shots over the last six games. Hooper Vint has fouled out in three of the last seven games. He didn t foul out in any of the first 16 contests. Terry Winn has attempted 101 foul shots (second on the team) in just 21.3 minutes per game. Terry Winn has had his top shooting performance of the season in each of the last two games. He was 5-for-7 from the field (71.4 percent) against both LA Tech and Marshall. Terry Winn s 13 rebounds at Middle Tennessee were the most by a Miner player this season. Tevin Caldwell shot 3-for-8 from the field in the season opener against Loyola. In 19 games since, Caldwell has connected on 16-of-22 shots. Floyd ranks second in school history in victories behind the legendary Don Haskins (719) and has also coached the second-most games of any UTEP coach (189). Floyd has enjoyed 20 winning seasons in 22 years as a collegiate head coach. His teams have made eight NCAA Tournament appearances and five trips to the NIT. Floyd previously was the head coach at Idaho ( ), New Orleans ( ), Iowa State ( ) and USC ( ). He was also head coach of the Chicago Bulls ( ) and the New Orleans Hornets ( ) in the NBA. Floyd has three former Division I head coaches on his staff in Phil Johnson (San Jose State), Bob Cantu (USC) and Bobby Braswell (Cal State Northridge). DEFENSE UNDER FLOYD UTEP has allowed less than 70 points 129 times under Tim Floyd (in 189 games), less than 60 points 72 times and less than 50 points on 17 occasions. The Miners have held 80 teams under 40 percent shooting, posting a record. During the Tim Floyd era, opponents have scored 12,060 points (63.8 avg.) while making 4,276-of-10,516 shots (.407) and 1,155-of-3,587 three pointers (.322). PRAISE FOR UTEP COACHES UTEP s Tim Floyd earned a no. 19 ranking among Top 25 X s & O s Head Coaches, and Bob Cantu was named the no. 24 assistant coach in the country by CoachStat.net on Nov. 24.
