4 LAST TIME OUT OKLAHOMA STATE 83, TEXAS TECH 64 01/21/17 MEN S BASKETBALL BLITZED BY OKLAHOMA STATE, Texas Tech was dealt a 19-point deficit in the game s opening 12 minutes as Oklahoma State picked up an victory at the United Supermarkets Arena. The Red Raiders (14-5, 3-4 Big 12) entered Saturday s game with a 17-game home winning streak and were unable to piece together back-to-back Big 12 wins for the first time this season. Oklahoma State (11-8, 1-6 Big 12) ended its six-game losing streak, and earned the 100th career win for its first-year head coach Brad Underwood. Keenan Evans delivered a team-leading 15 points and added three assists. He extended his streak to a career-best eight straight games in double figures. Zach Smith and Devon Thomas chipped in 11 points. For Smith, he has garnered 10-plus points in six consecutive games, while Thomas has pieced together double figures in two of his last three outings. Anthony Livingston connected on a trio of three-pointers en route to nine points. Justin Gray collected seven points and nine rebounds. The Red Raiders lone statistical advantage came in paint points where Texas Tech held a slight edge. Oklahoma State was effective and efficient and dialed up a 22-for-40 shooting clip. The Cowboys also sank 11-for-16 on treys and 28-for-37 in free throws. OSU amassed a rebounding advance and tallied 20 of the game s 27 points on second chance opportunities. Jeffrey Carroll scorched the nets for a game-high 25 points and tacked on nine rebounds. Phil Forte III notched 21 points, six rebounds and two steals. Texas Tech has allowed multiple 20-point scorers in two of its last three games. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED After a pair of five-point runs by each team to start the contest, Oklahoma State stepped on the gas behind 22-3 spurt over the next 5:16 off the clock. The Cowboys buried four triples and four layups to fuel the run. I could talk about the things we did well, but you ve got to give credit to a good team with a good coach that came in focused. I ve said it a million times this week that they are not a 0-6 team. That s a team that beat Wichita State by 20. It s a team that has an NBA player, two more all-conference players and [Phil] Forte, who is a player that I ve never respected anyone else that s played in this team more than him. So, just hats off to them. I thought they played the game well. They obviously made shots, but it was more than making shots. They beat us in every facet of the game today. We have a long ways to go, but hats off to Oklahoma State. Let me be clear, I have a lot of confidence in our players. We just got outplayed by a good team. It s not time to panic, but I have a lot of confidence in our players. I feel responsible for them, and I m trying to get them to go to that next level. 10 SEASON SERIES NO. 23 BAYLOR 63, TEXAS TECH 60 01/16/16 NO. 22 BAYLOR SLIPS PAST MEN S BASKETBALL ON BUZZER BEATER, Texas Tech overcame a seven-point deficit inside the final two minutes, but Baylor s Lester Medford connected on a three-pointer as time expired to lift Baylor to a decision over the Red Raiders at the United Supermarkets Arena. Texas Tech (11-5, 1-4 Big 12) was handed its fourth straight defeat, while Baylor (14-3, 4-1 Big 12) collected its four consecutive win. The Red Raiders kept Baylor off the boards and held a rebounding edge. Devaugntah Williams dialed up a game-high 16 points and added two steals en route to his team-leading 12th game in double figures on the season. He piled up 10 of the 16 points during the opening half after being limited to a combined 12 points over his last two games. Aaron Ross provided a spark off the bench with a Big 12 career-best 14 points on 5-of-9 from the floor. He has secured 10-plus points in back-to-back Big 12 games for the first time in his career. Toddrick Gotcher and Zach Smith nearly collected doubledoubles for the Red Raiders. Gotcher provided nine points and seven rebounds whereas Smith secured eight points and seven rebounds. Both players dished out a pair of assists. Keenan Evans filled the box score with four points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals. Al Freeman tallied a team-leading 14 points, and Terry Maston registered 12 points on an efficient 6-of-8 shooting clip for the Bears. Rico Gathers notched seven points and hauled down a game-high 13 rebounds. MOMENTS THAT MATTERED Trailing at the 2:34 mark, Gotcher began the Texas Tech rally with a trio of free throws. The Red Raiders got a defensive stop, and Smith buried two free throws to bring Tech within with 1:40 remaining. Maston responded for Baylor with a layup to make it with 1:09 to go. Late in the shot clock, Williams drove the basket and rolled in a layup over Gathers to pull the Red Raiders within with 49.2 seconds left. Following a Texas Tech timeout, Baylor threw a home run pass the length of the floor to Medford. Williams raced back and stripped Medford forcing the ball to go off his leg for a turnover. I m proud of how our kids competed, came back and fought to give us a chance. We started to trap them on their pick-and-rolls and tried to take the ball out of Lester Medford s hands. I think that helped us. At the end, we probably should have trapped Medford. We had been doing it up until that point. We probably should have made someone else beat us. We tried to pick it up [defensively] in the second half. If we score a couple baskets, we get energized and can get into our press. We extended our defense a little more and trapped in the pick-and-roll. I thought we battled one of the best rebounding teams in the nation. We re doing our job on the boards. We didn t get much out of a couple guys on the boards. Otherwise, we did a good job, especially Toddrick. He was huge with seven rebounds. Zach is always outstanding. Texas Tech (15-9, 5-7 Big 12) has collected back-to-back victories over ranked opponents in consecutive for the first time since Jan. 20 & 24, 2007 when the Red Raiders defeated No. 5 Kansas (69-64) and No. 6 Texas A&M (70-68). The 18-point victory for Tech was the largest margin of victory for a road win in program history over a ranked opponent. It also was the program s largest margin of victory against a ranked opponent since an triumph over No. 9 Kansas on March 4, For Evans, he s the fifth player to eclipse the 20-point mark in a game for the Red Raiders this season and reached 10-plus in three straight games for the first time in his career. We are proud and excited to hire a coach of Chris caliber, Hocutt said. Our program achieved tremendous success this year and I see that as something Chris will build upon and take us to even further heights. We are thrilled to have him back home at Texas Tech. Beard guided Little Rock to a historic turnaround in fueled by 30 victories, which was a program single season record and Sun Belt single season mark. The Trojans claimed the Sun Belt regular season and tournament titles en route to the program s fifth NCAA Tournament bid. Little Rock overcame a 14-point deficit during the final five minutes of the second half and won an double overtime thriller over No. 12-ranked and fifth-seeded Purdue in the NCAA Tournament. The Trojans also registered road victories over San Diego State, Tulsa and DePaul to spark a 10-0 regular season start. The 10-game winning streak to start the season matched a Little Rock program record. Beard s 30-5 record in his only season at Little Rock was a 15-game improvement from a campaign prior to his arrival. The 15-game improvement was tied for the NCAA s top spot in , while his 30 victories was tied for sixth by a first-year Division I head coach. Little Rock s 27 wins and.871 winning percentage led the nation during the regular season. For his efforts, Beard collected National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) District 24 and Sun Belt Conference Coach of the Year honors. Beard has amassed a record, a.774 winning percentage and 24.4 victories per season during his seven seasons as a head coach. His previous head coaching stops include Fort Scott Community College, Seminole State College, McMurry University, Angelo State, Little Rock and UNLV. Beard s roots in Lubbock and West Texas run deep. He spent 10 years at Texas Tech which included seven seasons as an assistant coach under Hall of Fame Coach Bob Knight and three seasons as an associate head coach under Pat Knight. The Red Raiders racked up 188 victories -- the best 10-year stretch in program history -- while Tech piled up four NCAA Tournament bids and three NIT appearances. His tenure with the Red Raiders was highlighted by Tech s run to the 2005 NCAA Sweet 16 where the Red Raiders defeated UCLA and No. 11-ranked and three-seeded Gonzaga in the first two rounds. Beard spent two seasons at Angelo State from where he secured NABC South Central Region and Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year after he guided the Rams to a program record-setting 28 wins and the program s first NCAA Division II Sweet 16 appearance in Angelo State began the season with a 17-0 record and finished with a No. 19 national ranking. Prior to Beard s arrival, the Rams suffered three consecutive losing seasons which included a 71-9 mark in Before Angelo State, Beard was the head coach at McMurry University and for the American Basketball Association s (ABA) South Carolina Warriors. McMurry went with Beard at the helm during the program s first season as a Division II member in The Warriors won the 2012 Mid Atlantic Championship, advanced to the ABA finals and notched a 31-2 mark as a first-year franchise. Raised in Irving, Texas, Beard s coaching career began in the Lone Star State as a graduate assistant at Incarnate Ward followed by a pair of assistant coaching stints at Abilene Christian and North Texas. Leading into his time with Texas Tech, Beard s first two head coaching opportunities came at Fort Scott Community College in Kansas and Seminole State College in Oklahoma. He led Seminole State College to a 25-6 record and a No. 14 national ranking in after Fort Scott came away with 19 victories and a NJCAA Regional appearance in Beard earned his bachelor s degree in kinesiology from the University of Texas in He has three daughters: Avery, Ella and Margo.
