Saturday is the 35th series meeting. ISU leads the series 19-15, but BU has won 5 of the last 7. Baylor is 12-2 all-time against Iowa State in Waco, with the only losses in 2000 and The home team has won 26 of 30 campus site games in the series, and BU is 1-3 vs. ISU at neutral sites. Neither team has led by more than 10 points in any of the last 4 series meetings, and the last 8 meetings have been decided by 10 or fewer points, including 4 games decided either by one possession or in OT. BU started 2-8 in the 2014 Big 12 season, but the Bears won 7 of the next 8 to finish the season at 9-9, then advanced to the Big 12 Championship title game as a No. 7 seed and the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 as a No. 6 seed. Following the Iowa State game, Baylor has four remaining home games that are all against top-15 ranked opponents (KU, TTU, WVU, OU) and four remaining road games all against unranked teams (OSU, UT, TCU, KSU). It was Baylor s most points in a loss since Jan. 23, 1995, more than 23 years ago. BU was led by 29 points from Manu Lecomte and 23 points off the bench from Nuni Omot. Baylor shot 51.7% from 3-point range (15-of-29), making its most 3-pointers since Feb. 12, Omot went 6-of-6 from 3-point range, breaking the school record for most 3-pointers made without a miss. BU made 5 more field goals on 18 more attempts than OU, but the Sooners made up the difference at the foul line, with Trae Young making as many free throws (16-of-19) as the Bears attempted as a team (11-of-16). FLORIDA BURNS NETS TO HAND BU FIRST BIG 12/SEC CHALLENGE LOSS Baylor fell in an early hole with No. 20 Florida making 9-of-12 first-half 3-pointers, and the Bears were unable to mount a comeback in an loss in Gainesville on Jan. 27. It was BU s first loss in the Big 12/SEC Challenge (4-1). Florida jumped out to a lead, and the Bears couldn t cut the deficit beyond 9 points the rest of the way. For the game, Florida made 14-of-25 (56%) from 3-point range, while BU went 3-of-15 (20%) from downtown. EARLY DEFICIT TOO MUCH VS. K-STATE Baylor trailed by 16 points in the first half at 35-19, and though the Bears cut the deficit to 5 points at halftime, they were never able to get any closer in a loss on Jan. 22 at the Ferrell Center. K-State started the second half on a run to rebuild their lead to 19 points at with 10 minutes left. Baylor s 83 points were its most in a loss since Dec. 28, a loss at No. 13 Gonzaga. LATE RUN COSTLY IN LOSS AT NO. 10 KANSAS Baylor battled back from a 13-point 2nd-half deficit to take a 6-point lead with 2:50 left, but No. 10 Kansas closed the game on a 9-0 run to take a win in Lawrence on Jan. 20. BU fell to 0-16 all-time in Lawrence. The Bears fell behind 9-0 early and didn t get within 5 points until less than 13 minutes remaining in the game. BU trailed with 7:44 to play, but went on an 18-6 run over the next 4:30 to take a lead. Kansas took a 1-point lead with 1:09 to play, and BU missed two potential go-ahead field goals in the final minute. LECOMTE SCORES 25 IN SECOND HALF TO LEAD BEARS PAST OKLAHOMA STATE Baylor put up 50 second-half points to erase a halftime deficit and beat Oklahoma State on Jan. 15. BU held OSU s starters to 20 total points. BU also had 20 assists and 8 turnovers, it s best ratio this season. Manu Lecomte s 3-pointer to start the second half gave BU a lead, and the Bears led the rest of the game. Lecomte scored a career-high 30 points, including 25 in the second half. He went 7-of-12 from 3-point range. LATE RUN COSTS BEARS AT IOWA STATE Baylor dropped its 3rd consecutive Big 12 road game, 75-65, at Iowa State on Jan. 14. BU overcame a halftime deficit to take a lead with 10 minutes remaining. Iowa State took the lead for good with 7:37 remaining and closed on a 22-9 run to end the game. The Cyclones capitalized on second chance opportunities, holding Baylor without a defensive rebound over the final 10 minutes. Freshman Tristan Clark had his best stat line, posting career-highs of 16 points, 15 rebounds and 3 blocks. CLOSE LOSS AT NO. 2 WEST VIRGINIA Baylor built an early 9-point lead on Jan. 9 at West Virginia, but WVU fought back to tie the game at halftime, and the Bears couldn t regain the lead the rest of the way in a loss. WVU s largest lead in the game was 4 points. BU trailed with 6 seconds left, and Manu Lecomte s potential game-tying 3-pointer at the buzzer went long. Baylor held West Virginia to 31% from the field (19-61), the lowest percentage and fewest field goals by a BU opponent this season, but BU shot a season-low 36% (19-53) and committed 21 turnovers that led to 20 WVU points. 5 BAYLOR BASKETBALL GAME NOTES BEARS FIGHT BACK TO BEAT TEXAS FOR FIRST BIG 12 WIN Baylor used lockdown defense to take a win over Texas on Jan. 6. The Bears limited Texas to 20 points in the second half, including holding the Longhorns scoreless over the final 5 minutes. BU trailed with one minute left in the first half, but the Bears closed the half on a 5-0 run and kept the momentum with a 6-0 run to start the second half to take a lead. BU didn t trail the rest of the way. Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. led the Bears with 17 points, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks and 3 steals in 36 minutes. LUAL-ACUIL RETURN PROVIDES BOOST, BUT BEARS FALL TO TCU IN OVERTIME BU rallied from an 8-point halftime deficit to force overtime, but No. 16 TCU claimed an win on Jan. 2. TCU led by as many as 12 points in the second half, but a 14-0 run gave the Bears a lead with 11:30 left. BU took a lead with 3:53 remaining in the second half, but TCU went on a 6-0 run to go back in front. Jake Lindsey drove for a layup with 17 seconds left to tie the game and force overtime, and the Bears led by 2 points with 1:30 remaining in OT before a Vlad Brodziansky 3-pointer gave TCU a lead it wouldn t relinquish. Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. and Terry Maston returned to form after missing time with injuries. Lual-Acuil had 28 points and 11 boards in a career-high 42 minutes, while Maston added 20 points and 9 boards in 28 minutes off the bench. BIG MAN INJURIES COSTLY IN LOSS AT TEXAS TECH BU suffered a loss in its Big 12 opener at No. 22 Texas Tech on Dec. 29. The Bears were playing without their second-leading scorer Jo Lual-Acuil Jr., who sat out with a left foot sprain, and though Terry Maston returned after missing 6 games with a broken shooting hand, he went 0-for-4 from the field. BU recorded a Drew-era low 3 assists, and were out-rebounded by 18 (39-21), its most since Nov. 30, Mark Vital tied his career high with a team-best 12 points in his first start. Vital combined with Tristan Clark to give the Bears two freshmen starters in the frontcourt. It was the first time BU started two freshmen in a Big 12 game since Feb. 3, 2007 at Iowa State (Tweety Carter and Josh Lomers). HOT SHOOTING CONTINUES VS. SOUTHERN BU had its 4th straight game shooting 57% or better, shooting.633 in an win over Southern on Dec. 21. Manu Lecomte scored a game-high 22 points on 6-of-9 from 3-point range. With the win, Baylor notched its 5th straight season with double-digit non-conference victories. SCORING RECORDS FALL VS. SAVANNAH STATE Baylor set Drew era and Ferrell Center records with 118 points in a win over Savannah State on Dec. 17. BU shot 59.4% (41-of-69) in the game and posted 61 first-half points, its most in a first half since Dec. 31, Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. posted 31 points and 20 rebounds for the 5th game in program history. ANOTHER RECORD-BREAKING SHOOTING PERFORMANCE VS. TSU For the second time this season, Baylor broke the program record for highest shooting percentage in a game when the Bears shot 66.13% (41-of-62) on their way to a win over Texas Southern on Dec. 14. The Bears broke the previous record of 66.10% (39-of-59) set in the Nov. 10 season opener vs. Central Arkansas. THIRD STRAIGHT YEAR PLAYING FOR SOLDIERS AT FORT HOOD BU hosted a game at Fort Hood for a third consecutive season, defeating Randall in front of a capacity crowd of soldiers and their families at Abrams Gym. All tickets were free and none were available to the general public. The Bears played only six scholarship players with Manu Lecomte and Mark Vital both sitting out. All five starters scored 12+ points, including career-highs for Nuni Omot (30), King McClure (23), Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. (19) and Tristan Clark (16). Additionally, Tyson Jolly posted 10 assists and 8 rebounds off the bench. SIX SCORE IN DOUBLE-FIGURES IN WIN OVER SAM HOUSTON STATE BU had a balanced attack with 6 players scoring in double-figures in an win over Sma Houston State on Dec. 4. Nuni Omot posted 15 points, while Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. scored 15 and added 11 rebounds, Tristan Clark recorded 14 points and 8 rebounds, Manu Lecomte had 12 points and Jake Lindsey and Mark Vital scored 11 apiece. BEARS HANG WITH NO. 8 WICHITA STATE, BUT FALL LATE BU played from behind most of the game against No. 8 Wichita State, but Jake Lindsey s and-1 tied the game at with 3:10 to go. The Bears wouldn t score again, missing their final five shots to fall The loss snapped Baylor s 46-game non-conference home winning streak, which was the nation s second-longest. Mark Vital had 8 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals in 19 minutes off the bench filling in at the power forward spot. EARLY DEFICIT TOO MUCH AT NO. 21 XAVIER BU fell behind 21-8 on Nov. 28 at Xavier, and though the Bears used a 21-9 run to cut the deficit to one late in the first half, Xavier never relinquished the lead. BU trailed with 7:30 to play, but Xavier closed on a 15-7 run. Terry Maston scored 15 first-half points, but he left the game with a broken hand in the 2nd half. Creighton has scored 92+ points in every other game this season and averages 99.2 ppg in those games. King McClure scored 15 second-half points on his way to career-highs of 19 points and 32 minutes. BU HOLDS OFF LATE RALLY TO DEFEAT WISCONSIN, Baylor advanced to the Hall of Fame Classic title game by knocking off Wisconsin, 70-65, on Nov. 20. Drew earned his 280th win at Baylor and improved to 100 games over.500 in his BU career ( ). Manu Lecomte had a team-high 17 points, leading the team in scoring for a third straight game. BU OVERCOMES SLOW START TO IMPROVE TO 2-0 VS. TAMU-CORPUS CHRISTI Baylor bounced back from a slow start to post a win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Nov. 13. The Bears led at the half after starting 0-for-8 from 3-point range and 1-for-8 at the free throw line. BU committed 8 turnovers and held TAMU-CC to 0 points off turnovers. It was the first time Baylor held an opponent to 0 points off turnovers since Feb. 4, 2003, a win vs. Texas A&M with 0 points off 9 turnovers. He spent five years as a Baylor assistant before taking over as Arkansas State head coach in Paul Mills is in his first season as head coach at Oral Roberts. NEW FACES ON BAYLOR BENCH Scott Drew added two new coaching staff members and promoted three others in June Bill Peterson joined the staff as Director of Basketball Operations.
