BU and TAMUCC are meeting for the first time since Dec BU leads the all-time series 2-1. BU won its season opener vs. UCA its most points vs. a DI team since March 20, BU broke school records for field goal percentage (66.1) and 3-point percentage (70.6) vs. UCA. All five starters scored 15+ points for the first time in program history vs. Central Arkansas. BU is ranked No. 24 in the preseason AP Top 25, the 6th preseason ranking in program history. Baylor returns six letterwinners from last season s 27-8 NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 team. Tristan Clark became Baylor s first true freshman to start a season opener since Ish Wainright in Mark Vital also made his Baylor debut and posted 6 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds in 20 minutes. BU has won 44 consecutive non-conference home games, the nation s 2nd-longest streak (Duke, 134). The Bears have out-scored opponents by 1,002 points during the streak (22.8 ppg) Baylor is one of 12 teams to be nationally ranked in each of the last 10 seasons entering The Bears are coming off a school-record fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. Head coach Scott Drew is in his 15th season at Baylor and is the school s all-time wins leader (278). Six Baylor players have been selected in the last six NBA Drafts, 10th-most nationally. Drew (46) is the youngest of nine coaches to take his current program to four Sweet 16s since Baylor s 153 wins since are second-most in the Big 12 behind only Kansas (180). Ekpe Udoh, Johnathan Motley, Cory Jefferson, Brady Heslip and Royce O Neale have all gone on to professional careers after redshirting. Manu Lecomte (transfer) and Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. (medical issues) redshirted during the season, and Mark Vital and Tyson Jolly redshirted due to the team s depth in Mario Kegler and Freddie Gillespie are both redshirting this season while sitting out to satisfy NCAA transfer rules. SCOTT DREW COACHING TREE Three current Division I head coaches took their first DI head coaching jobs after stints on Scott Drew s BU staff. Matthew Driscoll is in his ninth season as head coach at North Florida after six seasons as a Baylor assistant. Grant McCasland is in his first season as head coach at North Texas. He spent five years as a Baylor assistant before taking over as Arkansas State head coach in Paul Mills is in his first season as head coach at Oral Roberts. He was a member of Drew s original Baylor staff in and spent 14 years with Drew, the final eight as an assistant coach. NEW FACES ON BAYLOR BENCH Scott Drew added two new coaching staff members and promoted three others in June Bill Peterson joined the staff as Director of Basketball Operations. He has more than a decade of NBA experience, including the prior three seasons as head coach of the NBA G-League s Erie BayHawks, an Orlando Magic affiliate. Ty Beard joined the staff as Director of Video Operations. He has six years of experience as a collegiate assistant coach, including the prior three at John Brown University. He was a Baylor Graduate Assistant in and Jerome Tang was promoted to Associate Head Coach. He s an original member of Drew s Baylor staff and spent the previous 14 years as assistant coach. Jared Nuness was promoted to Special Assistant and Director of Player Development.
