2 SEASON OUTLOOK By Jerry Hill Baylor Director of Sports Journalism Even after losing Johnathan Motley to the NBA, Ishmail Wainright to Baylor football and two transfers, Scott Drew still has a roster filled with grizzled veterans. Coming off their fourth Sweet 16 appearance in the last eight years, the Bears have a trio of fifth-year seniors in point guard Manu Lecomte, 7-footer Jo Lual-Acuil Jr. and 6-9 forward Nuni Omot, plus 6-8 senior forward Terry Maston and junior guards Jake Lindsey and King McClure. You have a lot of experience, and those guys are used to the rigors, the toughness and intensity in which you have to practice and play, said Drew, who enters his 15th season at Baylor with a record of That s a good thing, because you can move ahead a little quicker on things. With the new guys, you get the summer to acclimate them and get them used to the weights and what practices are like, just on a Cliff Notes version. The 6-5 Lindsey, a versatile combo guard who averaged 4.7 points and 3.1 assists, said the team has a bunch of guys who either played in big moments, hit big shots in big moments, and have that experience and are ready to carry that over into bigger roles. Replacing Motley certainly won t be easy. Named the Karl Malone Award winner as the nation s top power forward, the 6-10 Motley was a second-team All-American and first-team All-Big 12 pick who averaged 17.3 points and 9.9 rebounds per game. But, at least there are options. It starts with Lual-Acuil, a Big 12 All-Newcomer and All-Defensive Team selection who averaged 9.1 points, 6.7 rebounds and a conferencebest 2.5 blocks per game. He made the summer camp circuit as a counselor and was able to work with other elite college players and work out with NBA guys, Drew said. Your game is able to grow and mature from that experience, Drew said. At the same time, Jo is one of the premier defensive players in the country. The intensity he brought, especially early in the year, was really special. And now, after another year of weights and conditioning, hopefully he ll be able to maintain that intensity and level of play throughout the Big 12. Especially the first time you go through it, it s a grind and it does wear on you. Maston, who has had flashes of brilliance, seems poised to make another jump after averaging 7.1 points and 3.8 rebounds. Omot has played only one semester as a junior college transfer, but he averaged 4.0 points and 1.9 rebounds in limited minutes last season and is a solid inside-outside threat. There s also 6-5 redshirt freshman Mark Baby Rico Vital; 6-9, 245-pound freshman Tristan Clark, a four-star prospect from San Antonio Wagner; and 7-0 sophomore center Leonard Allen, who averaged 14.6 points and 8.7 rebounds two years ago at San Diego City College. Allen is the older brother of Jarrett Allen, a first-round draft pick by the Brooklyn Nets after one year at Texas. Being an older sophomore, somebody who is more mature, it s probably going to take him a year to return physically, Drew said of Allen. The natural talent and ability he has, you can t teach. You can t teach 7-foot. There s a lot of positives with Leonard, a lot of similarities with him and Jarrett. I guess the goal would be like the Gasol brothers (Pau and Marc), someday. Not your typical freshman big man, Clark already has a great frame. And because of that, he s got a chance to be successful early on, and I m excited about that, Drew said. Clark was named the Class 6A Player of the Year in the state after averaging 17.9 points and 9.4 rebounds in leading Wagner to a 36-3 record and the state championship game. Defensively, he s got a lot of things to work on, still. He s a freshman, Lecomte said of Clark. But, I really like his game. He s a huge force inside and is really going to help us a lot. He s a 4, a post player, who can also hit the 15-foot shot. He s actually a very good shooter. The backcourt depth was hurt with the transfers of Al Freeman (North Carolina State) and Chuck Mitchell (Trinity Valley), but the Bears have a solid trio of guards returning in Lecomte, Lindsey and McClure. Named the Big 12 Newcomer of the Year by the league s coaches, Lecomte was an all-district and third-team All-Big 12 pick who averaged 12.2 points and 3.8 assists after transferring from Miami and sitting out a year. You learn a lot and improve, just playing a year, going through the rigors of the Big 12 and knowing what it s like, and the grind and intensity and toughness it takes, Drew said. After several stints with age-level teams, Lecomte played with the Belgium National Team this summer, averaging five points at the FIBA EuroBasket tournament in Istanbul. It was a great experience to play with real pros, Lecomte said. They already make money and they re like 30 years old, at least. The game is different. It teaches you another part of the game. So, it helped me a lot. McClure started the last 12 games a year ago, averaging 5.0 points per game and shooting 36.4 percent from 3-point range. The 6-4 guard scored all 15 of his points in the second half of a 66-63, come-from-behind win over then-no. 10 Louisville and a career-high-tying 17 points in the win over USC in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. King lost 20 pounds, added four inches to his vertical and is shooting the ball like crazy, Lindsey said of McClure. Him and Nuni, they re going to take big jumps in production. Even with a senior point guard in Lecomte, Lindsey will likely take on some of the leadership and do-it-all roles that Wainright held for last year s Sweet 16 team. I m a little more scoring-minded than Ish, Lindsey said, but similar to him, where you just kind of make the plays need to win. If you re not shooting the ball well, that s all right, we have plenty of guys on this team who can score. There s always things that can be brought every day. Redshirt freshman guard Tyson Jolly would give the Bears backcourt a boost, but he s out right now with a medical issue, Drew said. We plan on having him back, but just not exactly certain when. Baylor also has a pair of transfers sitting out this year: 6-9 junior forward Freddie Gillespie from Division III Carleton College and 6-7 sophomore guard Mario Kegler from Mississippi State, who averaged 9.7 points and 5.5 rebounds in starting all 32 games for the Bulldogs last season. After playing the toughest schedule in the country over the last four years, the Bears once again have an extremely difficult non-conference slate, facing Wisconsin, Xavier, Wichita State, Florida and either UCLA or Creighton. Also on tap is a matchup against Randall at the 2,500-seat Abrams Gym on the Ford Hood campus. Throughout college basketball, there s great parity with 351 (NCAA Division I) schools, so you have to be ready each and every night, Drew said. With us playing several teams in the top 25 polls, it definitely gets them focused and ready to go. 3 PRESEASON PLAYER DEVELOPMENT FROM UNRANKED TO NBA DRAFT Baylor has had a nation-leading four players selected in the NBA Draft since 2010 who weren t ranked in the ESPN100 out of high school. The only other schools with three such players were Colorado, Marquette, Missouri, New Mexico and Connecticut. Baylor developed Quincy Acy, Ekpe Udoh, Pierre Jackson and Taurean Prince into NBA Draft picks after joining the program as unranked recruits. 34 PRO IN DREW ERA In the Scott Drew era, 34 former players have gone on to play professionally either in the NBA, NFL, NBA G-League or internationally. The Bears have had nine players sign NBA contracts in the last eight seasons Quincy Acy, Pierre Jackson, Cory Jefferson, Perry Jones III, Quincy Miller, Johnathan Motley, Royce O Neale, Taurean Prince and Ekpe Udoh. BU joins Arizona, Duke, Iowa State, Kansas, North Carolina, Villanova and Virginia as the only teams to make that claim.
