6 DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS BAYLORBEARS.COM INTRODUCTION MACK RHOADES VICE PRESIDENT/DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS ARIZONA Following a national search, Baylor University Interim President David E. Garland announced the appointment of Mack Rhoades as Vice President and Director of Athletics on July 13, Rhoades came to Baylor after serving since April 2015 as Director of Intercollegiate Athletics for the University of Missouri where he oversaw the university s 20 intercollegiate athletics programs, 300 employees, 550 student-athletes and an annual operating budget of $92 million at the Southeastern Conference institution. Baylor University is very pleased to welcome Mack Rhoades as Baylor University s Vice President and Director of Athletics, said Garland. He is a charismatic leader who pays careful attention to details and cultivates solidarity among the coaches and staff. He intends to build champions on the field and on the court and to mold student-athletes into champions in their lives after sports. Most importantly, he is committed to and excited by Baylor s Christian mission and vision. Rhoades tenure at the University of Missouri was marked by a focus on preparing student-athletes to be men and women of character who are successful inside the classroom as well as in their areas of athletic competition. In addition to managing key coaching hires such as head football coach Barry Odom, actively engaging donors in the vision for the programs, and leading efforts to reignite the excitement of Mizzou alumni and fans, Rhoades success at Missouri included student-athletes posting the highest cumulative grade-point average in school history and the recognition of Missouri football as one of 15 programs honored by the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) for graduating at least 90 percent of student-athletes since Only three SEC programs were recognized by the organization last year. The past year has taught me a great deal about who I am as a person and as a leader. I am very grateful to the people I ve worked with and come to know throughout the state of Missouri. The experience has helped galvanize a commitment to my core values and to the values I want to infuse into an athletics program, said Rhoades. I look forward to the opportunity to join Baylor University at this important time in its history. I am excited to support and develop programs of the highest caliber, in facilities that are second to none, alongside coaches who are among the best in the industry, all grounded in a Christian tradition and committed to academic excellence. Prior to joining the University of Missouri staff, Rhoades served as Vice President for Athletics at the University of Houston where he led the resurgence of the Cougar program for almost six years. While at the helm in Houston from August 2009 to March 2015, Houston s football team appeared in four bowl games and enjoyed a historic 2011 campaign which saw the Cougars climb to No. 6 in the BCS standings en route to a 13-1 record and its first season-ending finish in The Associated Press Top 25 since Rhoades led the university s efforts to raise nearly $100 million for athletics and build numerous facilities including a new on-campus football stadium and a men s and women s basketball development center. In addition, Rhoades made student-athlete education and success a priority during his tenure in Houston. From Rhoades served as athletic director for the University of Akron, a member of the Mid-American Conference. During his tenure, Akron achieved unprecedented success on and off the field. Akron student-athletes earned: 765 total Dean s List honors, 213 All-Conference honors, 83 Academic All-Conference awards, 20 team championships, 14 Conference Player of the Year awards and 12 All-America honors. Akron men s basketball won its first Division I postseason game in the NIT, after posting the best winning record in a season in school history. The football team won its first MAC championship and first berth in an FBS bowl game; women s cross country and men s soccer also won MAC championships. Rhoades has also served in athletics department roles at University of Texas El Paso, Marquette and Yale University. A native of Tucson, Ariz., Rhoades is a graduate of the University of Arizona with a bachelor s degree in health sciences. He earned a master s degree in athletics administration/sports management from Indiana University. He and his wife, Amy, have three daughters: Nicolette, Natalie and Noelle. 4

7 BETTY LOU MAYS SOCCER FIELD INTRODUCTION Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field is set in the plush backdrop of the Brazos River on University Parks Drive. The field is part of the Jim and Julie Turner Riverfront Athletic Complex, which includes Baylor Ballpark, Getterman Stadium and the Hurd Tennis Center. The 2016 season marks the 18th year for the Baylor soccer team at Betty Lou Mays Soccer Field. The former Baylor Soccer Stadium was named during the 2000 season in honor of the late Betty Lou Mays of Amarillo, Texas. Mrs. Mays was the wife of Troy Mays, a 1945 graduate of Baylor; the two were longtime supporters of Baylor Athletics. A number of upgrades over the past few years have really made Betty Lou a great soccer environment. Most recently, the program received a very generous $1.5 million gift from Billy and Elaine Williams of Naples, Fla., that helped create the $3.3 million Williams Family Soccer and Olympic Sports Center that opened in August of 2015 and was dedicated to the Williams family on Aug. 20, In 2013, a new press box was added, featuring a pair of radio/ TV booths, more media seats and amenities. Thanks to a generous gift from the Troy Mays Foundation, over $250,000 worth of improvements were made to the Bears home in Through the gift, a gated fence was placed along the perimeter of the stadium to enclose the soccer field. The fence is supported by a number of brick-laid posts that are similar to those seen around the Baylor campus. In addition, a brick façade was added around the stands and the press box. The improvements give the facility more of a stadium-feel. When Baylor introduced its soccer program in 1996, the Bears played at Baylor Soccer Field, next to the Baylor Marina. The Bears played at that location from 1996 through 1998, compiling a record at home, including a perfect 8-0 mark in Baylor Soccer Field was the site of the program s first-ever soccer game, played on Aug. 30, 1996, as the Bears beat Pittsburgh, 12-2, in front of 227 fans. In 1999, the team moved just down the street to open what was originally called Baylor Soccer Stadium. The 3,000-seat stadium improved upon the old field by adding lights for night games, an improved press box, and a natural-turf playing field that features underground irrigation. New benches and dugout areas were added prior to the 2000 season, highlighted with red brick and green steel to match the theme that runs throughout campus and the rest of the Turner Athletic Complex. Two years later, an upgraded sound system was installed to further improve the fans enjoyment of the game. The largest crowd ever to see a regular season game at Betty Lou Mays Field came in 2002 as Baylor tied Texas A&M, 1-1, in front of 1,488 fans. The second-largest regular season crowd (1,372) attended the first game at the new facility against San Diego in The game marked the first time that Baylor played on its new home field and came on the heels of the Bears winning the first Big 12 championship in school history for any program the previous season. The spring of 2001 saw the biggest crowd ever when Baylor hosted the Mexican Women s National Team. A crowd of 1,810 fans saw the Bears beat the visiting Nationals, 3-1, on April 18, 2001, making the exhibition the largest home crowd in Baylor soccer history. 5

8 BAYLORBEARS.COM WILLIAMS FAMILY SOCCER & OLYMPIC SPORTS CENTER INTRODUCTION Thanks to a gift of $1.5 million from Billy and Elaine Williams of Naples, Fla., Baylor University created the Williams Family Soccer and Olympic Sports Center, an on-campus, $3.3-million facility approved by Baylor s Board of Regents at its October 2013 meeting. The building opened in August of 2015 and was dedicated to the Williams family on Aug. 20, Located near the entrance to the field, the 14,500-square-foot building provides the program and other student-athletes with a range of amenities. Its features include a coaches suite and locker and training rooms dedicated to the soccer program, encompassing approximately 2,300 square feet and including 35 player lockers. The facility also provides the team and other sports housed in the Turner Complex with a 5,000-square-foot weight room and visiting team locker rooms, as well as public restrooms and areas for concessions and laundry. 6

24 COACHING STAFF BAYLORBEARS.COM COACHING STAFF ` PAUL JOBSON HEAD COACH NINTH SEASON PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE (SC), Paul Jobson is a National A licensed coach beginning his ninth season at Baylor and second as head coach after spending the seasons as co-head coach with his wife and current assistant coach, Marci. During his time at Baylor, Jobson has helped guide the Bears to some of their best seasons in recent memory. Since arriving at Baylor in 2008, he has played a significant role in increasing or tying the program s win total in five of the last seven years, culminating in the program s first Big 12 Championship title and deepest run in the NCAA Tournament with a 2012 Sweet 16 appearance. Finishing with the highest ranking and best record (19-1-5) in program history, the 2012 squad ended its Sweet 16 run with the 11th spot in the final National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Poll. The seasons resulted in unprecedented success as the Bears posted 15 or more wins back-to-back for the first time in program history and advanced past the NCAA Tournament first round both times - another program first. The 2013 season saw Baylor surpass the 10-win mark for the fourth straight season -- the first such run since the program did so five straight years from Additionally, BU set program records for most matches without a loss (31), most home matches without a loss (17) and most consecutive home wins (14). Perhaps the highlight of the season was getting off to a hot start to earn a No. 9 ranking in the NSCAA poll on Sept. 3, the program s highest-ever ranking by the NSCAA. In 2014, BU went and ended on a high note with a good run at the 2014 Big 12 Championship as the No. 7 seed, knocking out No. 2 seed Oklahoma State in a 1-0 decision before falling on penalty kicks to No. 6 seed Oklahoma. Baylor s run in the league tournament marked the second straight year beating a higher seeded team. Along with earning the NSCAA Team Academic Award with a 3.55 team GPA, the Bears also led the league in Academic All-Big 12 selections for the fourth straight year with 13 honorees. In the 2015 campaign, the Bears moved into a new $3.3 million home in the Williams Family Soccer and Olympic Sports Center on Aug. 20. During the season, BU posted a record with a mark in Big 12 play to tie for the program s second highest league finish (second place) and extend BU s streak to seven straight seasons with at least eight wins. The team s four Big 12 wins marked the most since the 2012 season. Coach Jobson earned his first-ever win as a Division I head coach on Sept. 6 at Incarnate Word (7-1). The Bears went undefeated in 12 of their last 14 matches to end the season on a high note, notching at least one win in the Big 12 Championship for the fourth straight year. Academically, BU earned the NSCAA Team Academic Award with a 3.46 team GPA for the fourth time in five years while having 10 or more (10) Academic All-Big 12 selections for the ninth consecutive season, including a second-team CoSIDA Academic All-District VII choice in Lindsay Burns to mark the fifth such honoree in the last six years. Among on-field honors in 2015, Lauren Piercy gave BU its first-ever end-of-season award from the league by being named Co-Big 12 Freshman of the Year, in addition to being a second-team All-Big 12 selection and one of a program-record and league-high four Big 12 All-Freshman Team choices. Much of the success on the field by the Jobsons can be credited to their emphasis on man-marking defense that has resulted in six of the program s lowest goals allowed averages. The 2012 team set the record by only allowing 0.53 goals per game. The other six seasons were also under one goal per game (0.95 in 2009, 0.81 in 2010, 0.79 in 2011, 0.63 in 2013, 0.77 in 2014, 0.89 in 2015) -- prior to 2009, the program only had one season with an average under 1.15 goals allowed and that was in 1998 (0.98) in Baylor s third-ever soccer season (program began in 1996). Consequently, BU racked up nine or more shutouts from for a program record. The last time the Bears had a similar streak was in their first three seasons (10 shutouts in 1996, nine in 1997, 11 in 1998). In 2011, Jobson led the Bears to their then-second-most wins (15) in school history and most Big 12 wins (6) since BU was also selected for the NCAA Championship for the first time since Once in the 64-team field, Baylor earned its first-ever NCAA win with a 3-0 victory over Texas State at Betty Lou Mays Field. In 2010, Jobson assisted in turning BU into an 11-win team, the most victories since In addition, the defense put up the then-lowest goal against average in program history (0.81). The Conyers, Ga., native was a three-year letterman at Presbyterian College in South Carolina and was a member of the squad which made the school s first NCAA Division II championship appearance. The Blue Hose compiled a ledger that included the South Atlantic Conference regular season and postseason tourney championships. Jobson helped Presbyterian to a mark and regular season and conference tournament titles during the 1996 campaign. The following season, he was part of a team that notched 11 victories before opting to begin his coaching career as a senior. During his senior season at PC, Jobson served as a student assistant coach while finishing his bachelor s degree in accountancy in Upon graduation, Jobson moved into a role as assistant men s soccer coach and assistant sports information director at Presbyterian until he left to work for his family s business a year later. In 2002, Jobson resumed his work in soccer when he took a position with the Atlanta Beat of the WUSA (women s professional soccer league). In his role with the team, Jobson was able to work in many different facets of the soccer world, including promotion, youth soccer development and game day operations. Jobson s duties with the Beat ranged from serving as an account executive to being program director for youth player development, co-producer of the Atlanta Beat Road Show, and manager of the ajcjobs.com kickback zone. There he also met his future bride, Marci Miller, who was playing for the team. Throughout his soccer experiences, Jobson turned sports administration duties into his specialty, routinely taking on the tasks of fund-raising, budgets and camps. He s produced results while coaching young women at many levels. With his business experience, office organization and passion for the game, we make a great team, Marci Jobson said. A graduate of Salem High School, Jobson has also served as the Soccer Director and Program Supervisor for the Snellville (Ga.) Parks and Recreation Department as well as the Athletic Coordinator for Recreation and Select Soccer for the Alpharetta (Ga.) Recreation and Parks Department. In 2005, Jobson served as the junior varsity soccer coach at Milton High School in Alpharetta, Ga., where he guided one of the best JV programs in the state of Georgia. Jobson also served as the Executive Director of the Atlanta Youth Soccer Association. In 2005, Jobson earned his USSF National `B license. Prior to Baylor, Jobson was on the Northern Illinois staff as an assistant coach from and was named associate head coach for the 2007 season. During his tenure, Jobson helped lead NIU from five wins his first season to 10 wins in The 1999 Presbyterian (S.C.) graduate married Marci Jobson in August Marci is currently an assistant coach in the Baylor program. They have three sons, Miller, who was born on May 2, 2009, Grey, who was born on Dec. 28, 2011, and Nash, who was born on Feb. 12, 2014.
