HEAD COACH KIRK FERENTZ Kirk Ferentz is beginning his seventh year as Iowa s head football coach. The Hawkeyes, under Ferentz, have put together the greatest three-year run in school history. Add this year s 10-2 record to an 11-2 record in 2002 and a 10-3 campaign last year and you have the best three-year win total in school history (31-7). And, Iowa s 20 Big Ten wins are the most ever by a Hawkeye team in a three-year span. He recently signed a contract extension with the University that carries thru the 2012 season. Ferentz led the 2004 Hawkeyes to their second Big Ten title in three years and, in the process, won the league s Coach of the Year honors for the second time. Iowa s 10-2 (7-1 in the Big Ten) record was expected by very few, especially following a mediocre 2-2 start. Iowa ended the season with eight straight wins (fourth longest active streak in the nation). It enabled Iowa to fi nish eighth in the national polls for the third straight year. The appearance in the 2005 Capital One Bowl against Louisiana State was Iowa s third straight appearance in a January bowl game, a feat never before achieved at Iowa. The 56-yard touchdown pass from Drew Tate to Warren Holloway, on the fi nal play of the game, will go down as one of the greatest moments in Iowa football history. The score gave Iowa a come-from-behind win over LSU. Iowa has won 18 consecutive home games, a new Kinnick Stadium record. The home streak is the fourth longest in the nation. The 2004 season marked the fi rst time Iowa has sold out its entire home schedule and the 70,397 average attendance-per-game is a new record. Seven of Iowa s 10 wins came against teams that, at one time or another, were ranked in the nation s top twenty. In addition to Ferentz being named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2004, fi ve Hawkeyes were named to the fi rst all-big Ten team. Most pre-season polls picked Iowa somewhere in the bottom third of the 2003 Big Ten race. However, the Hawkeyes fooled the experts by rising into the nation s top ten four times during the year, getting as high as eighth in the season-ending poll. It was the fi rst time since that Iowa has fi nished consecutive seasons in the top ten. Iowa also fi nished eighth in the fi nal 2002 poll. Iowa put the topping on the 2003 season by beating a favored Florida team (37-17) in the Outback Bowl on New Year s Day. It marked the fi rst time Iowa played in January bowl games in consecutive years. The 2003 Hawkeyes were the only Big Ten team to beat league champion Michigan (30-27). And, fi ve Iowa players were named to the 2003 fi rst all-big Ten team while two were named fi rst-team all-america. Hawkeye offensive lineman Robert Gallery won the 2003 Outland Award, which goes to the nation s top collegiate interior lineman. The 2002 team was probably the most decorated in Iowa football history. Kirk was named 2002 Associated Press and The Walter Camp Football Foundation s Coach of the Year in college football. He was also named Big Ten Coach of the Year in a season that saw his team climb as high as third in the national rankings. Ferentz led the 2002 Iowa football team to its fi rst Big Ten title since 1990 and the most wins (11) in school history. The Hawkeyes also played in the BCS s FedEx Orange Bowl for the fi rst time. Iowa fi nished the year ranked eighth in both major polls. The only losses during the 2002 season came at the hands of Iowa State and Southern Cal. Iowa posted impressive road wins at Penn State and Michigan on its way to the school s fi rst undefeated Big Ten campaign since The win over Michigan was the most convincing by a Wolverine opponent, in Ann Arbor, since Winning three of its fi nal four games during the 2001 season, Ferentz led the Hawkeyes to the Sylvania Alamo Bowl in San Antonio, TX, where Iowa defeated Texas Tech It was the fi rst bowl game for Ferentz as a head coach. At Iowa, Ferentz has an overall record of 42-31, going in Big Ten play. He has a career record of in nine seasons as a collegiate head coach. Ferentz was named Iowa s 25th head football coach on December 2, He replaced Hayden Fry, who retired following 20 years at Iowa. He took over the Iowa football program after serving as assistant head coach and offensive line coach of the Baltimore Ravens of the National Football League. He had been a part of the Baltimore (Cleveland Browns prior to the move) staff for six years SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS

HEAD COACH KIRK FERENTZ Ferentz was a member of Hayden Fry s Iowa staff for nine years as offensive line coach ( ). He coordinated Iowa s running game during his coaching stint with the Hawkeyes. Iowa appeared in eight bowl games during the time Ferentz was an Iowa assistant. A pair of Rose Bowls (1982 & 1986), two Holiday Bowl appearances ( ) and a pair of Peach Bowl visits (1982 & 1988), along with appearances in the Gator (1983) Freedom (1984) highlighted his previous Iowa stay. Iowa s record in those nine years was and included two 10-win and two nine-win seasons. Offensive lines under the direction of Ferentz anchored four of Iowa s highest scoring offenses. Five of Iowa s top offensive teams, in terms of yards gained per game, were operating behind Ferentz coached offensive lines. And, seven of Iowa s top 10 passing teams of all time occurred during the Ferentz years of the 1980 s. Kirk s coaching career began as a graduate assistant (1977) at his alma mater, Connecticut. The next two years ( ) were spent at Worcester Academy as defensive coordinator and offensive line coach. While at Worcester, Kirk also taught English literature for two years. He served as a graduate assistant offensive line coach at Pittsburgh during the 1980 season. That Pittsburgh team (coached by Jackie Sherrill) finished with an 11-1 record and a number two national ranking. He joined Fry s staff in 1981 and the Hawkeyes won their first conference title and Rose Bowl berth in over 20 years. A string of 19 straight non-winning seasons ended in Ferentz continued as Iowa s line coach and running game coordinator thru the 1989 season. Eleven Hawkeyes, coached by Ferentz (the assistant), went on to play in the National Football League. They were John Alt, Rob Baxley, Dave Croston, Scott Davis, Mike Devlin, Chris Gambol, Mike Haight, Ron Hallstrom, Joel Hilgenberg, Bob Kratch and Brett Miller. Alt, Haight and Hallstrom were first round picks in the NFL draft and five of his players were first team all-big Ten. He was appointed head coach at Maine in 1990 and held that position for three years. Kirk served as the honorary chair of the University of Iowa s United Way campaign and he serves on the National Advisory Board of the Bethesda Family Services Foundation. Ferentz was born August 1, 1955, in Royal Oak, MI. He attended Upper St. Clair high school in Pittsburgh. Morgan is in his third season as Iowa s offensive line coach after spending the fi rst three years on the staff as tight ends coach and recruiting coordinator. Featuring a well-balanced offense, a solid, hard-hitting defense and special teams that rank among the best in the nation. Iowa has appeared in four straight bowl games while winning 38 games over the past four seasons. Iowa has won Big Ten titles two of the last three years. The Hawkeyes have won 31 games over the past three seasons, competing in the 2003 Orange Bowl, defeating Florida in the 2004 Outback Bowl and LSU in the 2005 Capital One Bowl. Among the reasons for Iowa s success the last few years has been the emergence of a strong offensive line, under the direction of Morgan. Last year s offensive line was relatively inexperienced and earned their stripes during the season. That same line should be much better this season. Anchored by consensus all-american Robert Gallery, the Outland Trophy winner, at left tackle, Iowa s 2003 offensive line had four new starters at the beginning of the year. By the end of the season, in which the Hawkeyes won 10 games and featured RB Fred Russell with over 1,300 rushing yards, the offensive line had meshed as one of Iowa s strong points. Gallery was named fi rst team on every all-america team at the end of the year. He was the second player selected in the NFL Draft, being taken by the Oakland Raiders. In becoming Iowa s third Outland Trophy winner, he became the second Outland Trophy winner coached by Morgan. As the head coach at Benton Community HS, Morgan coached Chad Hennings, the 1987 winner who was a defensive tackle at the Air Force Academy. In addition to Gallery going in the fi rst round of the 2004 draft, center Eric Rothwell (Kansas City) and tackle Sam Aiello (Chicago) signed free agent contracts immediately following the draft. As tight ends coach in 2002, Morgan coached tight end Dallas Clark to consensus all-america honors. Clark was also named winner of the John Mackey Award, which goes annually to college football s top tight end. Clark was named to at least seven fi rst team all-america teams. Morgan became part of the Iowa staff after eight years at West High School in Iowa City. He took a West program that had lost 35 straight games and resurrected the program to elite status in the state. West won state Class 4A (largest class in the state) titles in 1995, 1998 and Morgan left the program with a 26-game winning streak. Between 1994 and 1999, his West High School teams were His overall record at West was He has totaled 146 career prep victories. Morgan is a member of the Iowa High School Coach s Hall of Fame. He threw for 2,786 yards and 20 touchdowns last year. It ll be an unusual luxury for O Keefe to have a returning starter back at quarterback. Iowa fi nished with a 10-2 record and a high national ranking behind Tate s leadership in In 2003 Nathan Chandler directed a balanced Iowa offense as the Hawkeyes posted a 10-3 overall record. Chandler passed for over 2,000 yards as Iowa s offense averaged passing yards and rushing yards per game. Chandler signed a free agent contract with Buffalo. McCann ranked second in the Big Ten in pass effi ciency while completing 66.3% of his passes and throwing for 2,028 yards. McCann competed for Barcelona in the NFL Europe professional league following his career at Iowa. O Keefe is responsible for the resurgence in Iowa s offense. The Hawkeyes were second in league pass effi ciency in Iowa ranked third in the Big Ten in 2003 scoring at 28.7 points per game a year ago after leading the league in scoring offense in both 2001 (32.6 ppg) and 2002 (37.2 ppg). Iowa fi nished third in the league in total offense in 2002 at yards a game, a fi gure which ranked 13th nationally. The Hawkeyes fi nished fi rst in the Big Ten and second nationally in passing effi ciency (156.3) in Iowa also led the league in thirddown conversions during the 2002 season and QB sacks allowed (12), while ranking second in rushing offense (214.2) and third in total offense (424.5). Steen signed a free agent contract with the Super Bowl champion New England Patriots last year. Iowa s defense the last two seasons has ranked among the best in the Big Ten in rushing defense, turnover margin, QB sacks, scoring defense and pass effi ciency defense. In addition, the play of Iowa s special teams has been equally outstanding. Iowa s turnover margin last season led the Big Ten and the total defense was third in the league and 11 th nationally. A blocked punt was turned into a touchdown in Iowa s recent win over LSU in the Capital One Bowl. It was the second blocked kick by the Hawkeyes in the game. In 2003 Iowa set a school record with fi ve blocked punts, with three of the blocks being recovered for Iowa touchdowns and the other two leading to Hawkeye fi eld goals. Iowa was second in the Big Ten in KO returns (22.2) and third in punt returns (13.1) last season. In addition, Iowa s opponents averaged just 16.6 yards per KO return and 6.9 yards per punt return. 14 A LOOK AHEAD 2005 IOWA FOOTBALL OUTLOOK Iowa football continues to improve and make strides. The 2004 season was no exception. Despite many and various challenges, the Hawkeyes had an excellent season that resulted in another Big Ten title and January bowl game. Head Coach Kirk Ferentz and his staff continue to guide the Hawkeyes up the ladder of collegiate football success, knowing, at the same time, that many more steps are waiting to be climbed. The staff and players look forward to the challenges that lie ahead. So, exactly what s been happening in the world of Iowa football over DREW TATE the last few years. Two Big Ten championships in the last three years. Appearances in three straight New Year s Day (or later) bowl games. Three straight finishes among the nation s top ten. Three straight seasons of 10 or more wins. Eighteen straight home wins. Two straight bowl wins over highly regarded foes from the Southeastern Conference (Florida & LSU). A 31-7 record the last three seasons. And, Iowa will carry a streak of eight straight wins into the 2005 season, the fourth longest active streak in the nation. Moreover, Ferentz has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year two of the last three years and was the 2002 Associated Press Coach of the Year. Defensive Coordinator Norm Parker was a finalist for the 2004 Frank Broyles Award as Assistant Coach of the Year. Over the last two years Iowa s winning percentage (20-5, 80%) ranks 10 th nationally among all Division I schools. The Hawkeyes have the best overall winning percentage among all Big Ten teams the last two years. Iowa s winning percentage over the last three years (31-7,.816%) ranks eighth nationally. And, finally, Iowa s overall record was the best in the Big Ten following bowl games; It is the first time since 1991 that has happened. Individually, defensive end Matt Roth was a second team all-american last year. Joining Roth as first team all-big Ten performers were linebackers Chad Greenway, Abdul Hodge, defensive tackle Jonathan Babineaux and quarterback Drew Tate. In the face of much adversity and possessing virtually no running attack, 2004 will be a year talked about and remembered for a very long time. The expectations for 2005 will be high, indeed. Many publications already have the Hawkeyes listed among the top twenty in pre-season polls. A strong blend of experience and underclassmen will again make Iowa a team to be reckoned with. The success of the last four years has eliminated Iowa s chance of sneaking up on many opponents in the future. But, like past years, Iowa players remain confident that the coming season will be a successful one. As already noted, the Hawkeyes have posted a 31-7 record the last three years and a 20-4 mark in league play. Iowa has now won 18 straight home games, a new Kinnick Stadium record and the fourth longest home streak in the nation. The Hawkeyes have also won a stadium record 13 straight league games. Iowa has also won seven straight Big Ten games. For the first time in school history Iowa sold out it s entire home schedule in The home attendance average of 70,397 is a new Iowa record. The Hawkeyes have played before 11 consecutive home sellouts, also a school record. Words cannot aptly describe the loyalty of Iowa fans. Over 30,000 made the trek to Orlando for the Capital One Bowl win over LSU. That means over 100,000 Hawkeye fans have traveled to Iowa s last three bowl games. It s no coincidence that Iowa ranks high on the wish list of virtually every bowl game in America. The beginning of the 2004 season gave no clues as to what lied ahead for Hawkeye fans. September road losses to very good Arizona State and Michigan teams left the Hawkeyes on the edge of a potentially mediocre season. But, seven straight league wins propelled Iowa to the Big Ten title and another January 1 st bowl game. Of special note during the year was the Hawkeyes fifth straight win over Penn State and third straight over Wisconsin and Minnesota. Iowa s mental toughness was instrumental with the fact that five wins were by seven points or less and three were by a mere two points. The success of the 2004 Hawkeyes was achieved under adverse conditions. Ferentz has stated with pride that his squads usually are a team on the run-pass ratio. Last year the Hawkeyes were forced into becoming primarily a one-dimensional passing team. Four of Iowa s top five rushers were hurt during the season with three going down with seasonending injuries in Iowa s first three home games. What little rushing the Hawkeyes were able to muster came from a walk-on and a transfer who coming into the season were listed 4-5 on the depth chart and both of them were hurt during the season. Once again, all 12 of Iowa s games were televised last season. The Hawkeyes appeared on national TV five times during the 2004 season. Iowa has been very popular with the networks, as 40 straight games have been televised. The last time an Iowa game was not aired on TV was against Minnesota during the 2001 season. We seem to be repeating ourselves, but another great senior class has graduated. The missing includes four from offense (Warren Holloway, Pete McMahon, Tony Jackson and Aaron Mickens), six from defense (Derreck Robinson, Matt Roth, Jonathan Babineaux, Tyler Luebke, George Lewis SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS

A LOOK AHEAD 2005 IOWA FOOTBALL OUTLOOK and Sean Considine) and their punter (David Bradley). The Hawkeyes lost 17 lettermen, seven fewer than the previous year. Nevertheless, their loss in terms of talent and leadership will be immeasurable. The good news is the return of 45 lettermen. That list includes five returning starters on defense (Chad Greenway, Abdul Hodge, Antwan Allen, Jovon Johnson and Marcus Paschal) and seven on offense (Mike Jones, Brian Ferentz, Lee Gray, Mike Elgin, Drew Tate, Sam Brownlee and Ed Hinkel and part-time starter Ben Cronin). Placekicker Kyle Schlicher returns for his junior year. Hodge, Greenway and Tate are returning first-team all-big Ten players while Clinton Solomon was named to the second team. The 2005 Hawkeyes could be very strong offensively with a group that includes all-big Ten quarterback, Drew Tate. The Hawkeyes were second in Big Ten passing offense (240.1 yards a game). An excellent group of receivers are back to take in Tate s aerials. The hope this year is to keep a stable of running backs healthy behind an experienced offensive line. The Iowa defense starts with a pair of all-america candidates in linebackers Chad Greenway and Abdul Hodge. They could very well be the best linebacking duo in college football. The defensive front needs to be rebuilt, but three-fourths of a talented and experienced secondary return. The stability of the coaching staff has been a strong suit with Iowa. The group remains intact for another year. There have been very few coaching changes since Kirk Ferentz arrived on the Hawkeye scene. There s no question staff continuity has played a major role in Iowa s success. Iowa opens it 2005 season on September 3 rd against Ball State. Missing from the Hawkeye schedule are Big Ten foes Michigan State and Penn State. Indiana and Northwestern are back on the schedule after a twoyear absence. The Hawkeyes have an open date (Oct. 29 th ). Something all connected with Iowa football are looking forward to is the completion of the Kinnick Stadium renovation. The $90 million dollar project began the day following Iowa s final home game last year. The project will include a new south end zone, new locker and training facilities and a new press box. The entire project will take two years. The south end zone is expected to be done prior to the 2005 season and the new press box prior to the 2006 season. Here is a look at the Hawkeyes, position by position. QUARTERBACK Last season was the first time in five years Iowa didn t begin the season with a senior quarterback. Now the team will reap the rewards of something it s unfamiliar with, a returning starter at quarterback. Drew Tate returns as the league s all-big Ten signal caller from 2004 and is a legitimate candidate for all-america honors. He was named Iowa s offensive MVP, the MVP of the Capital One Bowl and College Football News Big Ten Player of the Year. Tate (6-0, 185) threw for 2,786 yards and 20 touchdowns. He completed 233 of 375 passes while starting all 12 games. He was second in league pass efficiency (134.7), third in passing yards a game (232.2) and fourth in total offense (225.8). His accurate passing and ability to make things happen was an invaluable asset to an injury riddled Iowa running game. He was credited with 89 rushes last year. Tate is the hub in Iowa s offensive wheel and big things will be expected of him in And, if Drew Tate never played another down at Iowa, he d still be forever known as the quarterback who threw a 56-yard scoring strike to Warren Holloway on the final play of the game to win the Capital One Bowl. MARQUES SIMMONS No other Iowa quarterback threw a pass or had a rushing attempt last year. Listed behind Tate on the depth charts are junior Jason Manson (6-1, 195) and senior Cy Phillips (6-6, 227). Both are talented athletes with strong arms but have little game experience. Coordinator Ken O Keefe has done a masterful job directing new Iowa quarterbacks. This year he won t have to begin as slowly with a new starter. RUNNING BACK Last year was very challenging for Iowa s running backs. The Hawkeyes lost starters (Marcus Schnoor, Albert Young and Jermelle Lewis) to season ending injuries in Iowa s first three home games. Furthermore, the fourth and fifth backs on the depth chart were hurt at other times during the season. Walk-on junior Sam Brownlee (5-10, 200) and senior transfer Marques Simmons (5-8, 202) carried much of the load following the injuries to the top three. Simmons was injured in Iowa s game with Ohio State and missed four games while Brownlee was injured in the Minnesota game. Following the Simmons injury Ferentz was forced to pull the redshirt off 2005 SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS 15

IOWA FOOTBALL 2004 BIG TEN CHAMPIONS 2005 CAPITAL ONE BOWL CHAMPIONS A LOOK AHEAD 2005 IOWA FOOTBALL OUTLOOK FULLBACK Sophomore Tom Busch (5-11, 231) begins spring practice listed No. 1. He takes over for the departed Aaron Mickens. He replaced an injured Mickens while starting three of Iowa s final four games, including the Capital One Bowl. In 2004 Busch rushed for 26 yards and a touchdown and caught six passes for 56 yards. He is considered an excellent blocker. Behind Busch is senior Paul Wilson (5-11, 242) with virtually no game experience. TOM BUSCH DAMIAN SIMS freshman Damian Sims (5-9, 185). He played in seven games during a season he expected to redshirt. It just was not a good year to be a Hawkeye running back. Brownlee led Iowa rushers with 227 net yards, Simmons totaled 194 yards and Sims had 45. Young had 92 yards in the two games he did play and Schnoor had 25 in his only game. Simmons, Brownlee and Sims are listed on the spring depth chart. Schnoor (6-1, 198) and Young (5-10, 207) will continue to rehab from their injuries, but are expected to be 100% by the time fall workouts begin. Schnoor was Iowa s third leading rusher in 2003 with 163 yards (5.6 average) and is considered a hard-nosed runner. Young, was also injured (broken leg) just prior to the start of the 2003 season. Working under the assumption that all are healthy, and they re expected to be, Iowa s running back corps is expected to be very good. Like Tate, they ll have the benefit of working behind an experienced offensive line. All of the above listed running backs were number one on the depth charts at one time last year. It s very possible the depth chart could look much different when Iowa takes the field against Ball State Sept. 3rd. All are talented and could handle the demands of being Iowa s top running back SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS Another candidate could be Champ Davis, who sat out much of last year with an injury. Davis (6-2, 227) started the 2003 season opener as a true freshman. He caught four passes for 14 yards and rushed four times four eight yards last year. He is an excellent all-around athlete with good running and receiving skills. Senior Kevin Sherlock (5-11, 231) will miss spring practice following off-season surgery. He is hoping to find playing time in his final campaign. This is a position where any of the candidates has a legitimate chance at grabbing the starting slot. A good spring is essential for Iowa s fullback candidates. TIGHT END This is a position the Hawkeyes hope to utilize more in the coming season. Honorable mention all-big Ten pick Tony Jackson is gone. He caught only seven passes for 82 yards and a touchdown last year. The 2004 season will find the Hawkeyes with even less experience than the previous season.

IOWA FOOTBALL 2004 BIG TEN CHAMPIONS 2005 CAPITAL ONE BOWL CHAMPIONS A LOOK AHEAD 2005 IOWA FOOTBALL OUTLOOK Junior Ryan Majerus (6-3, 237) will begin spring drills in the starting spot. He caught only two passes for 15 yards last season, but played in all 12 games. Majerus also played an important role on Iowa s special teams having blocked one kick. Converted junior wide receiver Scott Chandler (6-7, 242) will push Majerus for the starting spot. Chandler was Iowa s fourth leading receiver last year with 24 catches for 324 yards and two touchdowns. He played in 2003 as a true freshman. Senior C.J. Barkema (6-8, 280) will return to tight end after playing offensive line last year. Redshirt freshman Brandon Myers (6-4, 238) is considered a talented newcomer who could push the upper classmen for playing time. Overall, the staff expects good production from this group. WIDE RECEIVER This position is well stocked with talent and experience. Seniors Ed Hinkel (6-1, 190) and Clinton Solomon (6-3, 196) are both playmakers capable of post-season honors. The only notable absence in the wide receiving corps is Warren Holloway, who had 29 catches for 283 yards and one really big touchdown (vs. LSU on final play of Capital One Bowl). Hinkel and Solomon were Iowa s top two receivers in Hinkel caught 63 passes for 744 yards and seven touchdowns while Solomon ED HINKEL had 58 receptions for 905 yards and six touchdowns. Solomon was a second-team all-big Ten selection while Hinkel was honorable mention. Hinkel has 95 career catches for 1,070 yards and eight TD s. Many of his catches are highlight reel material. His 10 catches in the Capital One Bowl was a career high. His 63 receptions and seven touchdowns led the team last season. The 63 catches ties for the third best in Iowa history. He ranked third in the Big Ten with an average of 5.25 catches per game. Solomon had four 100-yard receiving games last season. His 905 yards rank seventh best in Iowa history. He has caught 72 career passes for 1,064 yards and seven touchdowns. Behind the two veterans are some very good receivers. Listed second on the charts are junior Calvin Davis (6-1, 197) and senior Matt Melloy (6-3, 208). Both suffered injuries during 2004 that kept them on the sidelines for a number of games. Davis caught five passes for 69 yards and Melloy three for 24 yards and two touchdowns. As sophomores in 2003, Davis started four games and caught 23 passes for 330 yards and a score while Melloy caught 10 for 155 yards and two scores. CLINTON SOLOMON A group of very talented athletes will be pushing the four top receivers for playing time. They include junior James Townsend (6-1, 185), sophomores Eric McCollom (6-1, 190), Tyler Fanucchi (5-10, 187), Herb Grigsby (6-0, 170) and Kennon Christian (6-2, 205) and redshirt 2005 SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS 17

IOWA FOOTBALL 2004 BIG TEN CHAMPIONS 2005 CAPITAL ONE BOWL CHAMPIONS A LOOK AHEAD 2005 IOWA FOOTBALL OUTLOOK freshman Andy Brodell (6-3, 185). Townsend caught three passes for 82 yards and a touchdown last season. The others are anxiously looking for their first catch. BRIAN FERENTZ The receivers were a very big part of Iowa s offense last year, mainly due to the injury problems at running back. The Hawkeye passing game could be very dangerous to opposing defenses this year. This will be one of the strongest areas on the team. OFFENSIVE LINE There was a lot of inexperience and unfamiliarity between members of the Iowa offensive line early last year. About four games into the season the line began to perform as a unit and the starters remained pretty much intact for the remainder of the season. Eighty percent of that group returns with tackle Pete McMahon being the only loss to graduation. season-ending elbow injury. Sophomore Todd Plagman (6-5, 295) and redshirt freshman Seth Olsen (6-5, 297) are both talented offensive linemen listed behind Walker and Ferentz. Plagman started two games last year and Olsen was almost used as a true freshman, but was kept on the redshirt list. MIKE ELGIN All-Big Ten candidate Mike Elgin (6-4, 277), a junior, returns at center where he started 11 of 12 games. Senior Ben Cronin (6-5, 285) started one game and will be behind Elgin this spring. Seniors Brian Ferentz (6-3, 282) and David Walker (6-2, 295) are listed as the starting guards. Ferentz is considered a candidate for all-big Ten honors. Ferentz made a quick recovery from off-season surgeries and is credited with pumping life into Iowa s line. He started Iowa s final eight games at right guard. Walker was one of Iowa s hard-luck players. He was injured coming into the 2004 season and did not see action until the third game. He played less than a half of that game before sustaining a SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS Junior Mike Jones (6-5, 299) returns to right tackle after starting the final 10 games at left guard last year. He is also a strong all-big Ten candidate. Jones made the switch from tackle to guard after two games last year. He started all 12 games. He s back at the tackle spot where the coaches feel he ll be the most comfortable. Senior Lee Gray (6-6, 310) will begin the spring as the top left tackle. He started 11 of 12 games there last year. Senior Ben Gates (6-6, 286) started two games and could see considerable playing time. Behind Jones will be junior college transfer, Marshal Yanda (6-4, 315), a junior. He entered Iowa at the semester and is considered a strong threat to push the starters at tackle. The offensive line is expected to be stronger this year. The experience factor alone will make the Hawkeye line much better. Coach Reese Morgan thinks his line will be able to protect the quarterback and running backs in DEFENSIVE LINE (Includes ends) The Hawkeyes have had an abundance of returning starters and experience across the defensive line the last two years. After reaping the benefits of one of the best defensive fronts in college football, the Hawkeyes must now start anew. Gone are all-americans and first team all-big Ten performers Matt Roth at end and tackle Jonathan Babineaux. Also graduated are defensive end Derreck Robinson and tackle Tyler Luebke. The foursome started every game and was responsible for 208

A LOOK AHEAD 2005 IOWA FOOTBALL OUTLOOK tackles last year. The quartet was also responsible for 51 tackles for loss in Their presence will be sorely missed, but Hawkeye fans have confidence in what defensive coordinator Norm Parker and line coach Ron Aiken will do with the new talent up front. Three sophomores and a freshman are listed number one at their defensive line position entering spring practice. The Hawkeye front will be young, but they are talented and lack only game experience. Sophomores Kenny Iwebema (6-4, 246) and Bryan Mattison (6-3, 262) enter spring as the starting ends. The pair saw action in all 12 games last season, but accounted for only eight tackles between them. Both are considered hard hitters with very athletic skills. Backing them up will be redshirt freshman Anton Narinskiy (6-4, 247) and junior Richard Kittrell (6-5, 289). The report is much the same at tackle. Redshirt freshman Matt Kroul (6-2, 223) and sophomore George Eshareturi (6-3, 284) are number one on the depth charts. Eshareturi played in five games last year and had one tackle. Once again, the coaches think the only void on their resume is experience. Hoping to push past Kroul and Eshareturi are sophomore Alex Willcox (6-2, 280), redshirt freshman Ted Bentler (6-4, 273), senior Nate Roos (6-0, 280) and sophomore Jacob Spratt (6-2, 233). Willcox is expected to miss much of spring practice with an injury. As noted, there is very little experience in the line. This area needs to mature in order to catch up with the rest of an experienced defense. ABDUL HODGE a position already loaded with starting talent. Sophomore Chris Brevi (6-2, 215) will back up Miles and Follett. He had six tackles last year and should see a considerable increase in playing time. This area is very talented. However, until depth is developed, the Hawkeyes need to stay healthy. LINEBACKERS (includes outside linebackers) Last year, it was said that Iowa s returning inside linebackers may have been the best tandem in college football. Nothing has changed as Abdul Hodge (6-2, 234) and Chad Greenway (6-4, 244) are now back as seniors. Both are legitimate all-america candidates after great sophomore and junior campaigns. Both players were first team all-big Ten last year. Greenway was named to a number of all-america teams and was named Iowa s Special Teams Player of the Year. Hodge also made one all-america team. The two were 1-2 on Iowa s tackle charts with Hodge making 116 and Greenway 113 last year. Hodge has four and a half tackles for loss for -15 yards. Greenway had eight tackles for a loss of 23 yards. Hodge has 295 career tackles to rank 14th on the Iowa charts. He ranked ninth nationally last year in solo tackles with 6.58 per game. Greenway was named national Defensive Player of the Week following a ten tackle, two interception game against Kent State. He ranked 18 th nationally in solo tackles with 5.92 per game. His 260 career tackles rank 23 rd at Iowa. The linebacking duo has 555 career tackles. A number of relatively inexperienced candidates back up the all-america candidates. Hoping to impress coaches this spring are sophomores Mike Humpal (6-2, 225), Tyler Bergan (5-11, 215) and Mike Klinkenborg (6-2, 230), junior Zach Gabelmann (6-1, 227) and redshirt freshman Mitch King (6-3, 237). All have the benefit of learning from two of the best. George Lewis, who started 10 of 12 games at outside linebacker last year is gone. Junior Edmond Miles (6-1, 222) and senior Mike Follett (6-5, 255) are the leading candidates to take over. Miles started two games and was credited with 24 tackles last year. He also had three tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks. Miles is considered an excellent hitter. Follett sat out much of last year with an injury while playing tight end. He s making the switch to linebacker this season. The two compliments CHAD GREENWAY 2005 SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS 19

IOWA FOOTBALL 2004 BIG TEN CHAMPIONS 2005 CAPITAL ONE BOWL CHAMPIONS A LOOK AHEAD 2005 IOWA FOOTBALL OUTLOOK DEFENSIVE BACKS Three-fourths of an improved secondary return for the 2005 season. The only missing starter is free safety Sean Considine who started every game the last two years. He had 46 tackles, three interceptions and a blocked kick in Sophomore Adam Shada (6-1, 180), junior Ma Quan Dawkins (5-9, 166) and redshirt freshman Bradley Fletcher are corners hoping to get playing time. Shada played in 11 games as a true freshman last year and had 13 tackles. Dawkins played in 10 games and had three tackles. The starting safety spots for the start of spring practice will be manned by sophomore Charles Godfrey (6-1, 202) and junior Miguel Merrick (6-0, 201). Merrick saw considerable action in all 12 games. He started twice and had 33 tackles and two blocked kicks. Godfrey played in 11 games and had 10 tackles. Out for all of spring practice will be junior Marcus Paschal (6-0, 199). He started all 12 games before suffering an injury in the Capital One Bowl game. He s expected to be 100% this fall. It ll be hard to push the starters off the field. Hoping to gain experience are junior Andrew Becker (6-1, 201), sophomore Jonathan Zanders (6-2, 190) and redshirt freshman Harold Dalton (6-1, 189). Much like the linebacking corps, the defensive backfield appears to solid and strong. Developing depth and providing experience for the newcomers will be a key. JOVON JOHNSON But everyone else is back in an area of the team which should be even stronger than last year. The Hawkeyes have improved in the secondary every year since Ferentz took over. Last year Iowa finished third in Big Ten pass defense giving up 201 yards a game. That s even more impressive when you take into account that teams averaged only 92 yards a game rushing against Iowa. The three returning starters in the secondary have a lot of career starts to their credit. Allen has started every game (38) during his Iowa career. Johnson has started every game the last two years (25) and has 27 career starts. Corners Antwan Allen (5-10, 180) and Jovon Johnson (5-9, 177) had 95 tackles between them last year. Each had four interceptions in 2004 to lead the team in that category. The pair have 289 career tackles between them (Allen has 175) SPRING FOOTBALL PROSPECTUS ANTWAN ALLEN

A LOOK AHEAD 2005 IOWA FOOTBALL OUTLOOK SPECIAL TEAMS Junior Kyle Schlicher (5-9, 179) was the correct answer to the question of who was going to replace Iowa s all-time leading scorer, Nate Kaeding. Schlicher was an honorable mention all-big Ten pick. He put his name in the Iowa records book last season when he kicked five field goals and had 17 kicking points against Minnesota. Not even Kaeding ever did that during his brilliant Iowa career. It tied for the second most field goals ever kicked in a Big Ten game. Schlicher made 21 of 26 field goals and 29 of 32 PAT s. The 21 field goals in a season ties the Iowa record. He led the Hawkeyes in scoring with 92 points. He was third in the Big Ten and seventh nationally in field goals made per game (1.75). His kickoffs got stronger as the 2004 season progressed and became a real weapon for Iowa. The Hawkeyes will have to find a new punter as fouryear starter David Bradley has departed. Bradley averaged 40.5 on his punts and was a consistent force the last few years. Senior John Gallery (6-2, 240) and junior Andy Fenstermaker (6-3, 221) will be the two top candidates to replace Bradley. Gallery punted twice as a sophomore averaging 46 yards. Fenstermaker has not seen game action. Both have strong legs and are capable of handling the punting chores. Iowa was second in the Big Ten and 15 th nationally in punt returns (13.7) last year. Receiver Ed Hinkel has been one of Iowa s top punt returners for three years and 2005 should not be an exception. A number of other players, some veterans, some not, will have a chance to earn return jobs this spring. It is no secret that in the Iowa system, a good way to earn more playing time is through special teams. Coaches Lester Erb and Darrell Wilson continue to do an excellent job with Iowa s special teams. The Hawkeyes have blocked 11 kicks over the last two years. THE SCHEDULE Iowa will play an 11-game regular season schedule. The Hawkeyes have traditionally played one of the nation s top schedules and this year is no different. Seven of Iowa s 2004 opponents were ranked in the nation s top twenty at some point during the season. Eight of last year s opponents also appeared in bowl games. Six of this year s opponents appeared in post-season action last season. New to Iowa s non-conference schedule is season-opening foe Ball State and Northern Iowa. Both games will be in Iowa City. Included in Iowa s 11-game regular season schedule are six home contests. In addition to Ball State and Northern Iowa, the Hawkeyes have Kinnick Stadium encounters with Illinois, Indiana, Michigan and Minnesota. Road contests are against Iowa State, Ohio State, Purdue, Northwestern and Wisconsin. Michigan State and Penn State are Big Ten teams leaving the Iowa schedule while Northwestern and Indiana are back on after a two-year hiatus. The Hawkeyes will have an open week on October 29 th.
