The series began in The teams last met 11/27/02 in Waco, an Bears win and the only meeting during Coach McConathy s 15 seasons. NSU won on 11/25/97 in Waco. Second two games in two nights in two locations challenge for Demons Not sure how often it s been done elsewhere in recent years, but for the second time this season, Northwestern State plays twice in two cities on consecutive nights as it visits Baylor and UTEP. The Demons played at Auburn on Nov. 15 and at LSU a night later, going 1-1 by knocking off the Tigers. That trip was a three-day, 1,140-mile bus ride through three states, with overnight stays Nov. 14 in Meridian, Miss., and postgame Nov. 15 in Mobile. This one is a three-day, 1,930-mile journey, by bus Wednesday to Waco, overnight in Waco, then Thursday AM riding to the DFW Airport, then a flight to El Paso, an overnight stay there, a Friday AM return flight to DFW, and a bus ride back home. The bus mileage is a moderate 670. The Demons depart Natchitoches Wednesday morning about 10:30 due to final exams on campus. Both times, late schedule changes related to football produced the tight schedules. Auburn wanted to move the game from Thursday to Friday to attract fans coming in for the Saturday football game vs. Georgia. The Sun Bowl s slate in El Paso moved the UTEP game away from its original late December date. Demons hoping for second-ever upset vs. ranked foe Wednesday s matchup is the second of two contests this season against a nationally-ranked team. Memphis, then No. 16 (AP)/15 (ESPN/USA Today coaches poll), broke open a tight game 10 minutes into play and dumped the Demons on Dec. 7. NSU played one Top 25 foe last season, falling to No. 14/12 Florida in the NCAA Tournament, playing the Gators well until a miserable last 11 minutes. The Demons only win over a Top 25 team came in the 2006 NCAA Tournament, over No. 15 Iowa. Scoreboards change constantly during Demon games Even with a season-worst 71 points at La. Tech, NSU stands 4th nationally in scoring (89.0 ppg) after leading the nation last year during the regular season and finishing second (80 ppg). By allowing 90.0 ppg, NSU is second from last (349th, with Grambling last at 95.8 ppg) in the country in points allowed. Northwestern remains the fastest-paced team in the country at 84.9 possessions pg, ahead of BYU, Niagara, Grambling, and VMI in the top 5. The 116 points vs. Division III Louisiana College, stemming from 60% FG aim, was the 12th-highest single-game total by a Division I team this season, and the second-highest in Mike McConathy s 15 seasons as NSU coach. The high end was 118 last year against LeTourneau, another DIII foe. 1

2 Northwestern State basketball SLC East Division Champions 07 SLC Champions 05, 06, SLC Tournament Champions 01, 06, 13 NCAA Tournament 01, 06, 13 State collegiate coaching wins record set (again) by McConathy Demon coach Mike McConathy last season became the winningest men s college coach in state history. At Auburn, the triumph gave him the most career victories by any state college coach (men s or women s basketball). He has 579 in his 31st season at NSU (15 years) and Bossier Parish Community College. Last season s milestone win came in the regularseason finale over Sam Houston State. Grambling s Fred Hobdy was when he retired after 30 years in 1986 and is in the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. In women s basketball, Leon Barmore won 576 games at Louisiana Tech on his way to the Basketball Hall of Fame (2003 inductee), as well as the Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame. McConathy is (.566) against Southland opponents ( regular season, 16-7 in conference tournament play). His overall NSU record includes 67 regular-season guarantee road games, with four wins (Nov. 15 at Auburn, and in 2005 at Oklahoma State, at Mississippi State, vs. Oregon State), making him (.593) otherwise including two NCAA Tournament wins. McConathy coached his state-record 900th career college game in 2012 and will coach his 957th Wednesday. That includes 511 in 16 seasons at BPCC and 446 in his 14 years with Northwestern. McConathy s extended tenure puts him in elite company Out of 347 Division I basketball programs, Coach McConathy is among only 22 current head coaches that have been in that post at the same school for 15 years or more. Others include Coach Mike Krzyzewski of Duke, Billy Donovan at Florida, Rick Barnes at Texas, Tom Izzo at Michigan State and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse. Coach McConathy a Top 25 voter for sixth straight season For the sixth year, Demons coach Mike McConathy is part of the ESPN/ USA Today Coaches Top 25 voting panel. For the record, he does his own Top 25 research and voting each Sunday night, at times consulting basketball staff members and has been late only once in five-plus seasons (ending a trip from Hawaii). Marquette s Williams, McNeese s Simmons, UNO s Slessinger all came from NSU and McConathy s staff Three Division I head coaches sat alongside Mike McConathy as assistant coaches on the Demon staff. In his 6th season as head coach at Marquette is Buzz Williams, who was an assistant coach on Mike McConathy s first NSU staff in , along with McNeese head coach Dave Simmons. Williams spent one season at NSU before moving to Colorado State as an assistant. He has restored Marquette among national hoops powers. Simmons was at NSU seven years before getting the head coaching post at McNeese and is in his 8th year there, earning Southland Coach of the Year honors in when the Cowboys won the regular-season league title and played in the NIT. After 11 years on McConathy s staff following in Williams footsteps, Mark Slessinger got a well-deserved break when the University of New DEMON QUICK FACTS Name: Northwestern State University Founded: 1884 as Louisiana Normal School Location: Natchitoches, Louisiana Enrollment: 8,944 Nickname: Demons Conference: Southland All-Time W/L: 1,358-1,071 (.560), 100th season, 101st year Colors: Purple & White with Orange trim Arena: Prather Coliseum (3,400) Head Coach: Mike McConathy Alma Mater: Louisiana Tech (1977) Record: (.510, 15th season) Career Record: (.606, 31st season) Starters R/L: 3/2 Letterman R/L: 12/4 Newcomers: 5 Website: NSUDemons.com DEMONS ON THE AIRWAVES Northwestern State basketball games can be heard live on the Demon Sports Network. 3 Northwestern State basketball SLC East Division Champions 07 SLC Champions 05, 06, SLC Tournament Champions 01, 06, 13 NCAA Tournament 01, 06, 13 Orleans hired him as head coach three years ago. The Privateers are new Southland Conference members this year. Academic achievement, an NSU standard in the McConathy era The Demons have been standouts over the past eight years since the NCAA began its Academic Progress Rate and the Graduation Success Rate. NSU had a perfect 1,000 APR last spring and is projected to have another outstanding score this May. Twice NSU has earned national recognition from the NCAA for outstanding APR scores in men s basketball. In coach Mike McConathy s 15 seasons, nearly 90 percent of the seniors who have played for him, including those he inherited in , have graduated. Coach Mike: Guardian of the Game At the 2012 Final Four, coach Mike McConathy, son of career educators, was presented with a Guardian of the Game award for education from the National Association of Basketball Coaches for work with local and area elementary and junior high schools. That continues. A large group of Zwolle Junior High who participated in an NABC reading program with McConathy attended the Demons game with Sam Houston. Demons are homegrown Throughout the 14+ seasons of the Mike McConathy s reign, coach Mike has only increased the amount of players recruited from Louisiana, ranging from 23% of the roster in the 1999 season to a century-high 86% in Currently, the Demons have 12 of their 17 players (71%) from the Pelican State. The Demons have 11 players on average from Louisiana each season, with the highest amount escalating to 17 of 20 players in 2005, and the lowest number dropping to 3 of 13, a mere 23%, in McConathy s first season before he got to recruit on a broad scale. Continuing to swat, swipe The Demons last season ranked in the Top 50 in blocked shots for the fifth straight year (4.7 pg, 41st). Although they re not as big this year, they re 6th nationally in blocks, averaging 8.0 pg so far, topped by 15 vs. LeTourneau, two shy of the singlegame school record set in The single-season school record for team blocks per game is 7.0 in , when Will Mosley led the nation at 4.9 pg. Northwestern is 12th in steals (10.3 pg). NSU is third in turnovers forced per game (18.4). Demons hoping to overcome rebounding deficiencies Northwestern doesn t have a big frontcourt, but hardly expected to be pounded on the boards. NSU won the rebounding battle vs. Louisiana College (46-38) for the first time all season. In 3 games the margin has been striking. Division III LeTourneau had a rebounding advantage. LSU dominated the boards UL- Lafayette had a advantage. Sandwiched between, an acceptable margin Auburn s edge. ULM won the boards by only Niagara outrebounded the Demons but Northwestern grabbed 7 of the final 8 with the outcome in the balance. NSU is being beaten by an average of 8.7 rebounds per game. Much-larger Memphis had a advantage. Louisiana Tech outboarded NSU by Demons have a nice run over the long haul, but stuck in a skid After going 23-9 last year, and winning their first two games this season, the Demons have won 23 of their last 34, including 16 of the last 24 games. But they have dropped 5 of the last 6 and 7 of the last 9 dating back to last year s NCAA Tournament. They lost 3 in row last month at LSU, to UL-Monroe and at UL- Lafayette. They have dropped the last 2 at Memphis and La. Tech. Last season they lost 2 straight games late, at Niagara and at Stephen F. Austin. NSU dropped a season-worst 3 straight early nonconference games at LSU, Texas A&M and Oklahoma. Putting value on the basketball The Demons play a very fast brand of basketball, and still have managed to curtail turnovers while forcing plenty. Their turnover margin is They are averaging only 14.8 turnovers. That figure was at 13.6 until a season-worst 19 vs. La. Tech followed by 19 more vs. La. College. Last year s 14.0 average was NSU s best in Mike McConathy s first 14 seasons, and it came on the heels of a best average of 14.8 in The team that went 26-8 and beat Iowa in the NCAA Tournament had the previous low at 15.7 turnovers pg. Three-point struggles The Demons are struggling behind the 3-point arc (27%), beginning with a season-opening 0-17 outing on 3- pointers vs. LeTourneau. They have enjoyed two excellent outings, 7-13 vs. Louisiana College and against Auburn. Other than those two games, NSU has sank just 19% (26-134) of its 3-pointers. 3

4 Northwestern State basketball SLC East Division Champions 07 SLC Champions 05, 06, SLC Tournament Champions 01, 06, 13 NCAA Tournament 01, 06, 13 FT aim has been erratic After making 55 of its first 64 free throws (86%) in two wins, NSU went (57.5%) in the next 3 losses. The Demons made 66% (23-35) in the Niagara win, 71% (17-24) at Memphis, 62% at Louisiana Tech, and 65% (13-20) vs. Louisiana College, for 65.7% (71-108) in the last 4 games. The Demons are at 68.6% for the season. They sank 68.6% last season. A pedestrian 6-14 outing on the free throw line at LSU, followed by vs. ULM and at ULL, comprised the skid. NSU sank in the opener, then at Auburn. Going the distance a rare feat Sophomore point guard Jalan West played all 40 minutes last Wednesday night at Louisiana Tech, thanks in part to junior point guard Tyler Washington sitting out with injuries sustained in a practice collision earlier in the week. It s the most minutes played by a Demon since a double OT game two years earlier at La. Tech, when William Mosley (45), Shamir Davis (44) and Demetrice Jacobs (40) played that long in the 50-minute contest. In regulation, Davis played 39 of 40 minutes in a narrow loss at Oklahoma in We haven t found a time any NSU player went 40 minutes in regulation in Mike McConathy s 15 seasons. Demons know championships Along with 11 players who contributed to the 2013 Southland Conference Tournament title, NSU has seven players whose teams won a combined 12 high school state championships. Patrick Robinson played on three state title winners at Baton Rouge- Christian Life HS, and a semifinal berth in his senior season. Sabri Thompson was part of three state championship teams at Sanford School in Hockessin, Delaware. His team was a state finalist in his senior year. Marvin Frazier s Zwolle Hawks won two state championships, and also were state runner-ups once and reached the semifinals another time. Zeek Woodley s Pelican-All Saints HS won state in his last two seasons after a semifinal trip in his sophomore year. Gary Stewart led Vidalia HS to a state title in his senior season. The Vikings were state runner-ups a year earlier. Jalan West guided Bossier HS to a state crown as a senior after two straight runner-up finishes. Brandon Williams played on a state championship team as a junior at Summit Christian HS in West Palm Beach Fla. Other Demons had near-misses: Dadrian Harris led Castor HS to the state semifinals as a senior. Austin and Dustin Adams helped Salmen HS to the semifinals as juniors. Tyler Washington helped Port Allen HS to the semifinals in his sophomore year. Tra von Joseph played in a pair of state semifinals for North Central HS. They re identical twins Sophomores Austin and Dustin Adams are identical twins. Good news: their girlfriends can tell them apart. Austin is 35 minutes older. Notre Dame s Mike Brey made Demons All-Century team In his 14th season in South Bend, head coach Mike Brey has Notre Dame among the nation s top programs. In 2012, he signed a longterm deal to coach the Irish through Brey won the Henry Iba Award as the national coach of the year from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association. The Rockville, Md.-DeMatha product played point guard for the Demons ( ) and is eighth in school history with 311 assists (4.3 pg), an average of 4.3 per game. He left NSU after his junior season following a coaching change and finished at George Washington. Last March he was named to the Demons All-Century Fab 50 Team for the Modern Era ( ) as NSU played its 100th year of basketball. Incoming for NSU has signed 6-foot-11, 190- pound Florida high school standout Reggie Kissoonlal to join the Demons beginning in Kissoonlal, a wing/forward, averaged 12 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks last season at Williams M. Raines High School in Jacksonville. He won honorable mention allconference honors as he made 92 percent of his free throws. As a sophomore, he averaged 9.2 points, 4.6 rebounds and shot 86 percent at the line. Raines went 23-7 last season, losing in a regional playoff final for the second straight year. Kissoonal also has lettered three times in golf and once in tennis. Also an outstanding student who is a National Honor Society member, Kissoonlal played on a very successful Florida Elite AAU team during the past summer. 4

10 Northwestern State basketball SLC East Division Champions 07 SLC Champions 05, 06, SLC Tournament Champions 01, 06, 13 NCAA Tournament 01, 06, 13 31st season in college coaching, 35th overall career record (.606) (.510) in 15 seasons at NSU Times have changed with Coach Mike in charge When he was hired as head coach at his father s alma mater in March 1999, Mike McConathy took the helm of a basketball program that was, to put it kindly, struggling. Prior to Coach Mike s arrival, NSU had only five winning seasons in 24 years of NCAA Division I competition. The high points of modern-day Demon basketball before McConathy were a stunning upset win on Dec. 7, 1988 at Rupp Arena to hand Kentucky its first home-opening loss in 21 seasons, and a 1994 NCAA team scoring title. Five previous coaches, including a couple who had been highly successful elsewhere (Wayne Yates, J.D. Barnett), had been unable to establish sustained success. Then, and now: Then - 5 winning seasons in 24 years, 5 straight losing seasons going into Now - 9 winning seasons in 15 years, including the last 4 Then - no 20-win seasons in 23 years of Division I membership; only one since 1960 Now win seasons in the last 10 years, back-to-back 20-win seasons in ; all-time best 26-8 mark in Then - No postseason tournament appearances Now record in two NCAA Tournaments (2001, 2006, 2013) Then - no conference championship in 13 seasons in the SLC, 3 seasons in the Gulf Star Conference and 3 in the Trans-America Conference Now - Southland Conference regular-season crowns in 2005,2006; SLC Tournament titles in 2001, 2006, 2013; 2007 SLC East Division championship 55) under Coach Mike, including a 39-8 (83%) record in the last 3+ seasons. Then - NSU s graduation rate for basketball was below par nationally Now - The Demons have graduated nearly 90% of the seniors who have played under Coach Mike. NSU had a perfect NCAA APR (Academic Progress Rate) score in May 2012 to earn its second public recognition among the NCAA s top 10% in that report (also 2006). Another strong score is projected in May Noteworthy on Coach Mike Three of his former assistant coaches, Dave Simmons (8th year, McNeese State), Mark Slessinger (3frd year, New Orleans) and Buzz Williams (6th year, Marquette) have become head coaches of Division I programs. Simmons and Williams were his two primary assistants in his first NCAA Tournament season ( ) He was the first Northwestern State head coach in any sport to receive a multipleyear contract, getting a four-year package at a base of $99,000 per year in spring 2006 and having the package extended and upgraded in 2008 to $125,000. Louisiana law requires one-year contracts for state employees unless guaranteed with private funds (or by elections!). His record includes 65 games played at a power conference foe, winning at Auburn, Oklahoma State and Mississippi State UTEP head coach Tim Floyd and McConathy were roommates and teammates at Louisiana Tech, where they were recruited by future NBA head coach (Jazz, Bulls, Pistons) Scotty Robertson. Floyd and McConathy stay in contact. He is married to his college sweetheart. Connie McConathy, a former HS English teacher, manages the Bossier Parish community College branch located on the NSU campus. Then - no conference tournament championship game appearances Now - 7 SLC Tournament championship game appearances in 11 tourney appearances (2000, 2001, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2013), with two wins (2001, 2006). Each of the losses came down to the final minute. Then - attendance for NSU home games in Prather Coliseum was about 1,200 per game. Now - in 14 home games in , the Demons set an all-time record with an average of 2,340 fans. Four of the top five crowds in 45 seasons in Prather Coliseum, all exceeding seating capacity (baseline to baseline) of 3,400, have come under Coach Mike. Five 2,100-plus crowds have watched the Demons play at home this season. A 2,703 crowd was in Prather on 12/4/12 and 2,832 vs. Nicholls on 1/17 is the season high. NSU averaged 1,742 per game at home in and had 1,612 in the season debut. His father, Johnny, starred for Northwestern in and was the No. 5 pick in the 1951 NBA Draft, going to Syracuse. He does a live pregame radio interview courtside on the Demon Sports Network. 15 minutes before tipoff. Pregame, he doesn t sequester himself in the locker room or his office. At home games he goes through the stands and into the booster room, greeting fans. He s also typically out visiting around the court pregame for road games. He is on the voting panel for the ESPN/USA Today coaches Top 25 poll for the 6th straight season. A thoroughbred horse named for him, Coach Mike, has won $ in the past 3 years. The horse is a filly and just like Coach Mike s teams, loves to run. Then - no national television appearances, 4 regional television appearances Now - 20 national telecasts (4 on CBS, 9 on ESPN/ ESPN2/ESPNU, 2 on Big Ten Network, 5 on ESPN3), 27 more regional telecasts in 14 seasons, producing a total of 47 TV games. Then - Demons had won 62% of their home games in 33 seasons in Prather Coliseum Now - Demons have won 71% of their home games (135-10

You can tell his players hold a reverence toward him. If you didn t meet him, you d think he was too good to be true. He s a quality human being, more concerned about his kids getting through school and doing well in life than anything else, and they know it -- Bill Raftery, CBS Sports 2006 NCAA Tournament He s one of the neatest and one of the greatest guys I ve ever been around. I think Mike has a lawn cutting business and a striping business, where they do lines in parking lots, and he s right there in the middle of it during his offseason. That s just who he is, what he s about and he s a tremendous basketball coach. He loves it. You re right, he doesn t ever draw any attention or anything to himself. He s just a great guy. --LSU head coach Johnny Jones I have never seen the drive Mike had in any other player on any level. Looking back, I realize that the things we coaches try to emphasize each day to our players are the things that Mike did back then. He was completely selfmade and his numbers each year reflected how hard he was working. He could have started for North Carolina, UCLA or anybody else. -- college teammate, now UTEP head coach Tim Floyd 11
