2 2004 OUTLOOK If preseason predictions hold true, then a little bit of déjà vu may be in order for Boston College veteran field hockey coach Sherren Granese and her 2004 squad. Chosen as cofavorites to win the 2003 BIG EAST crown, the Eagles won their first conference championship since 1997 and lived up to the preseason billing. Similarly, the 2004 preseason poll picks the Eagles to successfully defend their conference crown. We re excited to be picked in first place, says Granese. It s a place to start. It doesn t matter where you re picked preseason. It matters more where you finish. Living up to such expectations is made a little bit easier with the return of 13 letter winners including 10 starters from last year s 15-7 team. Among the returning players are four All-BIG EAST performers, including 2003 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Kristen Madden. After having tasted the thrill of victory throughout last season, this year s corps of veterans is eager to transform success into a winning tradition for Boston College field hockey. Having won the third BIG EAST championship in program history, the Eagles wish to remain at the top of the competitive heap. In addition, Boston College looks to continue its regional and national success, maintaining a familiar place in the national poll and striving to return to the NCAA Tournament, which it appeared in for the third time in I think that it shows that people have respect for us after we did what we did last year, says Granese of the preseason poll. They view us as being their competitors. Respect is what the Eagles have been mustering up slowly but steadily in Chestnut Hill. BC hopes to continue its road to respect with fierce competition on a daily basis, both in practice and in games. With the help of an experienced nucleus, the hopes may just turn into reality. GOALKEEPING Last season, Lauren Hill and Jillian Savoy split netminding duties for the Eagles. The duo combined for eight shutouts, including a string of six consecutive to start the 2003 campaign. With the graduation of Hill, primary goalkeeping duties will fall mainly on the shoulders of Savoy. Savoy posted a 4-2 record last season in over 500 minutes of action across 10 games. She saw action in several crucial games, including a 2-1 double overtime victory against Boston University and the BIG EAST Semifinals against Villanova (5-1 win). Jillian got some solid experience last year, says Granese. She played in some big games and we ve seen her become more poised and more focused. DEFENSE Similar to last season, defense will be one of the strong points for the Eagles. BC returns a solid core of experienced and decorated defenders, led by 2003 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year Kristen Madden. Two other players tricaptains Kerri Doherty and Lauren Schultz return to their respective spots in the backfield, returning a wealth of game-time experience. It s nice to have an experienced defense, says Granese. It is good to be able to control the backfield and our play coming out of the backfield. Doherty, an All-BIG EAST second team selection one year ago, has started every game for BC during the last three seasons, bringing a familiar face and consistency to the strong back line. Also anchoring the backfield will be senior Schultz. Another versatile player, Schultz returns for her fifth year of eligibility. Both players are crucial components to BC s defensive penalty corner and both bring different strengths to the backfield Doherty poise and Schultz speed. This is where we have the most experience, says Granese, of her diverse backfield corps and its sense for the game. Junior Meg Palisoul and sophomore Lauren Parks look to find some time in the mix. Palisoul, one of the best block-tacklers on the team, was a regular starter from one year ago BOSTON COLLEGE 2 FIELD HOCKEY while Parks broke into the line-up on occasion, returning from a knee injury during her freshman campaign. Finally, junior Stephanie Scibilia and freshman Brenna Leahy look to compete for increased playing time after good performances in the off-season. MIDFIELD The Eagle midfield returns two-thirds in tact from last season. Looking to fill the void left by the graduation of All-BIG EAST performer Virginia Drozd, the Eagles will rely upon veterans to combine experience and welcome some younger players to step up with increased playing time. Anchoring the midfield will be tri-captain Bronwen Kelly. The 2003 BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Performer, Kelly brings a veteran and poised look to the BC transition game. Kelly is a natural at the midfield slot,

3 combining outstanding skills on both the offensive and defensive side of the ball. Bronwen is very poised and she has great skills, says Granese. Kelly will be joined by senior Kerri Kulesza, the team s work horse. Kulesza started 17 games last season and saw action in all but one contest. She is a three-year starter for the program. Sophomores Amanda Chase and Allison Early should both see playing time in the midfield. The two should compete for the final starting slot and both should see increased minutes. Between the two, they played in 21 games last fall. ATTACK BC s offense will benefit from a host of returning players on the attack, all of whom spent quality minutes patrolling the front line last fall. Despite losing Kim French, the 2002 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year, the Eagles hope to have enough firepower to overcome the loss of her 14 goals. Leading the unit of attack players is junior Sara York. The team s returning scorer from one year ago, York collected 24 goals en route to an All-BIG EAST first team nod. A passionate player, York brings a spark to the Eagle offense and is a go-to scoring option. She has a nose for the goal and is hungry out there, says Granese. She has great skills. Looking to shoulder some of the scoring burden will be sophomore Tara Fernandes and junior Sabrina Lazzari. Both players were regular parts of the forward line rotation last year and should continue to be important components this year. Fernandes posted two goals and three assists in 21 games during her freshman campaign while Lazzari tallied eight goals and five assists. Freshman Mary DeFilippo looks to get increased minutes as she comes off a redshirt season. A strong finisher, DeFilippo took strides in development during the spring and should compete for increased playing time. NEWCOMERS A group of seven newcomers will provide depth for Granese s squad. Two goalkeepers and five positional players look to break into the mix for playing time, and even starting positions, this fall. Of the group, forwards Alyssa Emrick and Kelley Smith, along with goalkeeper Julia Berkowitz are poised to make an immediate impact. Berkowitz has been selected to A-camp while Emrick was a B-camp selection. In addition, Berkowitz played in this summer s firstever America/Canada Challenge OUTLOOK We are excited about the incoming class, says Granese. Across the board, they are all athletes who can play multiple positions. Freshmen Caitlyn Young, Crystal Frates, Carey Roach, and junior Brianne Pearce will bring athleticism and depth to this veteran squad, hoping to compete in practice and during games. The versatility that most of the newcomers have will be crucial to finding a spot in the veteran-heavy line-up. Granese is certain that their athletic skill combined with their passion for the game will create an easy adjustment period that will, hopefully, manifest in quality minutes from the young newcomers. THE SCHEDULE As always, BC will tackle some of the nation s top field hockey teams throughout the season. Putting together a schedule that is competitive regionally and nationally, the Eagles will travel a tough road toward defending their BIG EAST Conference championship and claiming stake to its automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament. We are happy that we can open the season with an ACC school, said Granese, of her soon-to-be regular conference foe Maryland. We are also playing three New England schools that made the NCAA Tournament. The team will open the season with a home game against three-time national champion Maryland. The Eagles will remain at home for their first six games and play seven of their first 10 games at home. Radford and Lock Haven will come to town for the BC Invitational while local rivals Massachusetts, Northeastern, and Boston University will appear in the early part of the schedule. We re excited to challenge ourselves from beginning to end, said Granese. We are excited about the schedule. Boston College will take a trip west this season, facing California and Stanford over the Columbus Day Weekend. The Eagles will also renew competition with Fairfield and Yale. Familiar foes Brown, Harvard, and New Hampshire also appear on the 2004 schedule. We are excited to play in different regions of the country, said Granese, whose team will play in three of four field hockey regions across the country. The BIG EAST schedule will feature home games with Providence, Connecticut, and Villanova and road games with Syracuse and Rutgers. The conference slate begins on September 21 with a home contest against Providence. BOSTON COLLEGE 3 FIELD HOCKEY

18 2003 SEASON RECAP As early as the preseason, the Boston College field hockey team was laden with high expectations. Taking an experience-heavy squad of 14 returning letter winners (including eight starters), the Eagles expected to go above and beyond their 15-6 record from A co-favorite to win the BIG EAST Championship, Boston College did not disappoint. Winning the 2003 BIG EAST Championship and earning the conference s automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, Boston College put forth one of the most successful seasons in recent history. Tying a season-best mark for most wins with their 15-7 overall record, the Eagles posted a 4-1 mark in conference play en route to winning the conference crown within the friendly confines of their home Alumni Stadium. The two-game tournament victory marked the first championship for the team since After opening the season with a disappointing 3-2 loss to Northwestern, the Eagles collected back-to-back shutout wins, including a 2-0 victory at state rival Massachusetts, the second straight win over the Minutewomen. After another loss to nationally-ranked Michigan, the Eagles took a 1-0 double overtime thriller against 17 th -ranked Boston University. Local rival Northeastern put to rest any hopes that the Eagles had of sweeping local foes, winning 3-2 in overtime. Midway through September, Boston College was 3-3. The.500 mark and loss to Northeastern spurred the Eagles into action as they rallied off a season-best seven game win streak. Wins against Quinnipiac (7-0) and BIG EAST foe Providence (2-0) gave the Eagles five victories on the season all of them shutouts. In its string of seven straight wins, Boston College also posted conference wins over Syracuse and No. 13 Connecticut to take a 3-0 mark atop the conference standings. Beginning the season with a ranking of 17, the team catapulted to the 12 th spot with its 10-3 mark. Back-to-back losses to Harvard and Villanova quickly grounded the Eagles, but they remained true to their mission of reaching the BIG EAST Tournament and having a chance to play on their home field. The team closed out the season with a 3-1 mark and earned the No. 3 seed in the conference tournament. The Eagles would have a chance to avenge their earlier loss to Villanova, who has also knocked BC out of the conference tournament a year earlier. Third-seeded Boston College opened the BIG EAST Tournament with a convincing 5-1 upset victory over No. 2 Villanova. Leading 3-1 at the break, the Eagles added a pair of insurance goals in the second stanza. Sara York netted two of her team s goals as BC advanced to the championship game against the top-seeded Connecticut Huskies. In the championship game, the Eagles took a 2-0 lead at intermission and went up 3-0 with everything seemingly in hand. The Huskies, however, were looking for another ending and scored three unanswered goals in the final 28 minutes of play to tie the game and send it to overtime. In the ninth minute of overtime, Bronwen Kelly scored the game winner and gave BC its tournament championship. The Eagles qualified for the NCAA Tournament via the automatic bid for the BIG EAST Champion. The Eagles faced top-seeded an topranked Wake Forest in the first round. The defending national champions struck first with a goal within the first five minutes of play. BC played staunch defense but, at the 24:00 minute mark, the Demon Deacons scored again. Quickly after, Sara York connected to cut the deficit in half. Wake Forest, however, would deal a blow that BC could not recover from. Scoring back-to-back goals within the final two minutes of the first half, Wake Forest went up 4-1. Adding another insurance goal in the second half, Wake Forest ended BC s season with a 5-1 loss. BOSTON COLLEGE 18 FIELD HOCKEY Sara York led all scorers, tallying 48 points on 24 goals. She was one of seven Eagles to register double-digit point totals for the season. Kim French followed closely behind with 30 points coming off 14 goals and two assists. Lauren Hill and Jillian Savoy combined for eight shutout victories in net, including the first five wins of the season. At season s end, several players were honored with school, conference, regional, and national recognition. Kristen Madden was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year while Bronwen Kelly was the 2003 BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Performer. Madden, York, Virginia Drozd, and Kim French were All-BIG EAST first team selections while Kelly, Hill, and Kerri Doherty were All-BIG EAST second team selections. Six players were STX/NFHCA Northeast Regional All-Americans while Madden was a second team national All- American. 30 BIG EAST CONFERENCE After celebrating its 25 th anniversary a year ago, the BIG EAST Conference moves forward in with new members poised to join a conference that gives unequivocal importance to providing student-athletes with opportunities to excel against the nation s best. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 24 national championships in six different sports and 122 student-athletes have won individual national titles. The BIG EAST has always been able to boast that some of its best students are also some of its best athletes. More than 300 studentathletes have earned Academic All-America honors. In , three BIG EAST student-athletes were named the national scholar-athlete of the year in their respective sports Connecticut s Emeka Okafor in men s basketball, Notre Dame s Vanessa Pruzinsky in women s soccer and St. John s Chris Wingert in men s soccer. BIG EAST student-athletes also have continued their success after leaving the classrooms and playing fields. Former Connecticut women s basketball standout Dr. Leigh Curl was inducted into the Verizon Academic All-America Hall of Fame in Former Georgetown men s basketball star Dikembe Mutombo was named a winner of the President s Service Award, the highest honor in the United States for volunteer service. The BIG EAST continued to thrive on the playing fields and in the playing arenas in In basketball, Connecticut won the men s and women s NCAA titles. With the Syracuse men and the UConn women also grabbing NCAA crowns the previous season, the BIG EAST became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men s and women s titles in consecutive seasons. In fact, the BIG EAST has won the last five women s basketball titles. Also in , St. John s played in the NCAA men s soccer national championship game. Connecticut made it to the women s soccer final and Georgetown played in its third women s lacrosse Final Four in the last four years. Providence placed third in women s cross country. Whether it s the student-athletes or the league as a whole, moving proactively has been a consistent strategy for the conference that was formed in In the spring of 2001, the BIG EAST added women s lacrosse to its growing list of sports. The inaugural women s golf championship was held in the spring of The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John s, Georgetown and Syracuse Universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven-school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad-based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. The BIG EAST Conference has enjoyed a leadership role nationally. Its student-athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization enjoys outstanding leadership. Michael Tranghese, the league s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Dave Gavitt, moved into the Commissioner s chair in In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. BIG EAST sports attract the interest of followers in the nation s largest media markets including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Boston, Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh and Hartford. When the new schools are added in , the BIG EAST markets will contain almost one fourth of all television households in the nation. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student-athletes. The conference has long-range television contracts with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. While BIG EAST basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden, attendance figures also are significant at BIG EAST soccer, women s basketball and baseball games. More than 500 BIG EAST athletes have earned All-America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well-represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals in each of the last five summer Olympiads. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 athletes in 23 sports BOSTON COLLEGE 30 FIELD HOCKEY

31 LEARNING RESOURCES Boston College s philosophy is to put the student-athlete at the heart of its program. To succeed academically at Boston College, students must be disciplined in their study habits. Recognizing the time constraints posed by participation in sports, the University s Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes lends a hand, offering every varsity athlete a wide range of services academic advising, counseling and tutoring. Working with coaching staff and faculty, the LRSA also monitors classroom attendance and academic progress on a regular basis. Dr. Ferna Phillips, Director of Learning Resources for Student- Athletes, leads a professional staff of six and a tutoring staff of 40. And as Boston College continues to succeed on the field, its student-athletes are continuing their tradition of academic excellence. FERNA L. PHILLIPS, PH.D. CHAMPIONS IN THE COMMUNITY Boston College student-athletes continue to give back to the community, living by the Jesuit ideal of improving one s self by helping others. Nearly one-third of all student-athletes participate in some sort of community service project through the athletic department. More than 100 student-athletes corresponded regularly with area school children through the Pen Pal program last year. In May, the school children got the opportunity to meet their pen pals at the annual Pen Pal Picnic, held on the Alumni Stadium turf. ONE OF AMERICA S TOP 40 UNIVERSITIES Once again in 2003, US News & World Report has ranked Boston College among the Top 40 Universities in America the only BIG EAST institution to achieve a Top 40 ranking. The University s 116-acre main campus is located in GASSON HALL an open suburban setting six miles from downtown Boston, with direct access to the city via trolley. The past decade has seen the construction or substantial renovation of 10 campus buildings. Recent projects include renovation of the Law School facilities and the sports and recreation complex, and a major expansion of the biology/physics building. The University has also made a major commitment to academic excellence. It is in the process of adding faculty positions, expanding faculty and graduate research, increasing student financial aid, and widening opportunities in key undergraduate programs, such as foreign study, internships, community service, and personal formation. Boston College has experienced unprecedented growth in recent years, including a 21-percent increase in undergraduate application and a 100-percent increase in revenue from voluntary giving in the past five years. Its endowment stands at more than $1 billion, among the 50 largest in the nation. VOICES OF IMANI CHOIR BC HISTORY FROM THE GROUND UP Boston College was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1863 and, with 3 teachers and 22 students, opened its doors on September 5, Through its first seven decades, it remained an exclusively liberal arts institution with emphasis on the Greek and Latin classics, English and modern languages, and philosophy and religion. Originally located on Harrison Avenue in Boston s South End, where it shared quarters with Boston College High School, the University outgrew its urban setting toward the end of its first 50 years. It moved to then-rural Chestnut Hill, on the site of the former Lawrence farm, where ground was broken on June 19, 1909 for the construction of Gasson Hall. 35 THE UNIVERSITY form the core of the campus St. Mary s Hall, Devlin Hall, and Bapst Library opened in 1917, 1924, and 1928, respectively. During the 1940s, new purchases doubled the size of the main campus. In 1974, Boston College acquired Newton College of the Sacred Heart, 1.5 miles away. With 15 buildings on 40 acres, it is now the site of the Law School and residence halls housing more than 800 students. Though incorporated as a University from its beginning, Boston College did not begin to fill out the dimensions of its University charter until the 1920s, with the inauguration of the Summer Session, the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, the Law School and the Evening College. The 1930s saw the introduction of the Graduate School of Social Work and the College of Business Administration (now known as The Wallace E. Carroll School of Management). The William F. Connell School of Nursing and the School of Education (now the Carolyn A. and Peter S. Lynch School of Education) followed in 1947 and The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences first offered doctoral programs in 1952, followed by the graduate schools of Education, Nursing, Management, and Social Work. In 1927 Boston College conferred one earned bachelor s degree and 15 master s degrees on women through its Extension Division. By 1970 all undergraduate programs had become coeducational, and today women comprise more than half of the University s enrollment. In 1996 the Evening College became the James Woods, S.J. College of Advancing Studies, offering master s as well as bachelor s degrees. That same year, the University s longest presidency, 24 years, came to an end when J. Donald Monan, S.J., became chancellor and was succeeded in the presidency by William P. Leahy, S.J. In 1997, President Leahy announced the implementation plan for Advancing the Legacy, BC s $260-million, five-year investment to strengthen education, reaffirm its Jesuit and Catholic mission, increase research, and improve the quality of student life. This past year, Boston College successfully completed a $400 million fund-raising campaign. Ever to Excel: The Campaign for Boston College will create 100 endowed faculty chairs, add $50 million to undergraduate and graduate financial aid, target support for academic centers, libraries, and selected undergraduate and graduate programs, and help fund new construction, including a planned student center and humanities building. THE COMMUNITY The Jesuit Community at Boston College is committed to maintaining and strengthening the Jesuit, Catholic mission of the University, especially its commitment to integrating intellectual, personal, ethical, and religious formation; and to uniting high ac ademic achievement with service to others. Jesuits are active in all aspects of University life. Some 45 teach undergraduate and graduate courses, and another 13 have administrative appointments. This year, 10 visiting scholars and 25 graduate students from 10 countries are Jesuits. Members of th e community offer Ignatian retreats, extracurricular programs, and spiritual direction to faculty, staff, and students. Gifts from the Jesuit community have helped establish the Jesuit Institute and the Center for Ignatian Spirituality at Boston College. The Institute sponsors personal research, academic exchange, and collective inquiry about the issues that emerge at the intersection of faith and culture. The Center helps members of the University community to understand and implement Jesuit/ Ignatian traditions and promotes conversation among other religious traditions represented at Boston College. 36 GENE DEFILIPPO, DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS Gene DeFilippo and Boston College Athleticscould be the proverbial fit. Since DeFilippo was named Director of Athletics on Sept. 16, 1997, the BC athletics program has experienced a dizzying and unprecedented period of innovation, growth, fundraising, athletic and academic success. DeFilippo has made a significant impact on the program internally, in the Boston community, and from a national standpoint, while molding it into one of the nation s elite both on and off the playing field. DeFilippo is credited with spearheading efforts to strengthen BC s athletics program in a number of areas. Under his leadership, 317 BC student-athletes maintained a grade point average of 3.0 or better during the academic year, earning the Athletic Director s Award for Academic Excellence. In its March 18, 2002 issue, U.S. News and World Report honored Boston College as one of the top-20 athletics departments in the country. The magazine ranked each Division I school on four criteria: Gender equity, graduation rates, win-loss records and total number of sports offered. Additionally, to be honored, a school could not have committed any major NCAA infractions in the past 10 years. BC made the honor roll along with such athletic and academic heavyweights as Duke, Stanford, Harvard and Michigan. DeFilippo has been instrumental in raising the funds to build the new $26 million, 72,000- square-foot varsity athletics center in the north end zone of Alumni Stadium. Boston College recently received a commitment of $15 million from the Yawkey Foundation to help fund the new building and other athletics-related improvements to enhance intercollegiate, intramural and club sports. The new facility, to be called the Yawkey Athletics Center, will be attached to the north side of Alumni Stadium. It will house the varsity football program, the Office of Learning Resources for Student-Athletes, and a large function area for generaluniversity use, freeing up critically needed space in Conte Forum for women s athletics and other men s teams. DeFilippo renamed the Athletics Association s fundraising arm (formerly Blue Chips) in honor of longtime Athletics Director Bill Flynn. Under DeFilippo s leadership, cash gifts received during he year reached a record level of $9 million. Combined with the Yawkey gift, fundraising for BC Athletics reached a record $24 million. The $53 million raised during the Ever to Excel Campaign represents the most successful fundraising initiative in the history of Boston College Athletics. Gifts secured during the campaign exceeded the total dollars committed during the previous 30 years. Former student-athletes continue to be among BC s most generous benefactors as 22 have made commitments of $100,000 or more. DeFilippo is extremely active on the national scene. He is the former BIG EAST representative to the NCAA Division I Management Council, the chair of the Executive Committee of the BIG EAST basketball conference, a member of the Executive Committee and first vice president of NACDA (National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics), vice president of the nation s Division I-A Athletics Directors organization and is a member of the Honors Court and the board of directors of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame. DeFilippo was named the Division I-A Northeast Region NACDA/ Continental Airlines AD of the Year. He was honored at the annual NACDA convention in Salt Lake City in June He received the Penguin of the Year Award from Youngstown State University in 2003 and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Springfield College in In April 2000, he was awarded the I Migliori plaque at the Pirandello Lyceum s annual awards banquet, honoring outstanding achievements and exemplary lives of Italian-Americans. A 1973 graduate of Springfield College with a bachelor of science degree, DeFilippo earned three varsity letters in football during his undergraduate career. He received a master s degree in educational administration from the University of Tennessee in DeFilippo and his wife, Anne, are the parents of three children Christine, 27, a guidance counselor and women s basketball coach at Beaver Country Day School; John, 25, an assistant football coach at Columbia, and Mary, 18, a freshman at Boston College.
