This marks the highest preseason showing in program history and UofL s 11th straight top 10 appearance dating back to Sept. 8, The Cards were picked to finish fourth in the ACC preseason coaches poll. Ayeisha McFerran, Minout Mink and Nicole Woods earned All-ACC preseason honors. UofL went 15-6 in 2016 and earned their third consecutive NCAA at-large bid. Louisville returns 14 letterwinners from last year s team and welcomes 10 newcomers. Head coach Justine Sowry is in her seventh season at the helm for the Cardinals. The 2016 NFHCA West Region Coach of the Year has compiled an record at Louisville and has an overall record while in her 11th season as a head coach.

Scouting the Hoosiers: Indiana posted an 8-12 overall record and a 3-5 mark in Big Ten play in The Hoosiers will be led by Big Ten preseason selections seniors Elle Hempt and Maddie Latino and sophomore Ciara Girouard. Hempt was a valuable member of the Hoosier defense, helping the team to three shutouts in Latino, a Louisville, Ky. native, returns as Indiana s top scorer with 14 career goals and 16 assists. Delaware 1 - Louisville 0 Ninth-ranked Louisville fell 1-0 to No. 8 Delaware in the first round of the NCAA Field Hockey Championship at William s Field at Jack Katz Stadium. The Cardinals were shut out for the only time in 2016 despite outshooting the Blue Hens 11-4 and holding a 4-1 advantage in penalty corners. Maura Zarkoski scored the only goal of the game as Delaware would go on to win the NCAA title. Scouting the Blue Hens: The Blue Hens enter the season ranked No. 3 in the NFHCA preseason poll - the highest ranking in school history. The defending national champions posted a 23-2 overall record and finished the season on a 19-game win streak. Delaware has been picked to win the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) for the fifth straight year. Junior Greta Nauck was chosen as the preseason Player of the Year in the CAA after earning NFHCA All-America status last season. Nauck led the nation in points per game in 2016 with 3.04 and goals per game at 1.32, finishing with 33 goals and 10 assists in The Blue Hens added four others to the CAA preseason All-first team including seniors Taylor Lister and Emmeline Oltmans and juniors Kiki Bink and Lisa Giezeman. Up next Following this weekend, the Cards will embark on a six-game road swing starting with a trip to Columbus, Ohio next weekend. Louisville will visit Ohio State for a Friday matchup and face Kent State on Sunday. Up last Louisville showed some impressive offensive fireworks in a pair of preseason games last weekend. Senior Marigrace Ragsdale tallied four goals while sophomore Whena Munn added three scores. Ten other Cardinals added to the scoring output. Louisville 6 - Miami (Ohio) 2 The Cards used goals from six different players to beat Miami (Ohio) 6-2 in a preseason exhibition Friday at Trager Stadium. Whena Munn, Taylor Stone, Marigrace Ragsdale, Sydnie Swartwood, Jillian Shive and Minout Mink each tallied a goal for the Cards. Louisville 11 - Alumnae 0 Marigrace Ragsdale scored three goals and Whena Munn added a pair of goals to pace the current Cardinals offensively. The Cardinals have appeared in the NFHCA top 10 in 11 straight ranking periods dating back to Sept. 8, UofL finished last season at No. 9 after posting a 15-6 overall record and earning its third-straight NCAA tournament bid. This marks the 43rd straight week the Cardinals have appeared in the top 20 rankings dating back to the 2013 season. On Oct. 7, 2014, Louisville appeared at No. 5 in the coaches poll marking the second top-five appearance in program history with Louisville achieving a program-best No. 4 ranking in the 2002 season.

3 2016 Field Hockey Game Notes ACC power All seven ACC field hockey programs are ranked among the top 15 in the nation with five appearing in the top 10. The ninth-ranked Cardinals join North Carolina (No. 1), Duke (No. 2), Syracuse (No. 5) and Virginia (No. 10) in the top 10 while Boston College (No. 12) and Wake Forest (No. 15) Every ACC field hockey team has been ranked for the entirety of the last four seasons, a streak that dates to October of 2012 and includes 47 consecutive NFHCA Polls Awards & Honors NFHCA All-America Ayeisha McFerran... First Team Erin McCrudden... Second Team NFHCA All West Region Coach of the Year Justine Sowry Cards picked to finish fourth in ACC The University of Louisville field hockey team was picked to finish fourth in the ACC according to a vote of the league s seven head coaches. The Cardinals led the conference with three players selected to the Preseason All-ACC team with senior Nicole Woods, junior Ayeisha McFerran and sophomore Minout Mink earning the honor. Woods (Beverly, Mass.) picks up her second straight ACC preseason accolade. The three-year starter is a two-time All-ACC and NFHCA All- Region pick and is a member of USA Field Hockey s National Team. McFerran (Larne, Northern Ireland) is also making her second appearance on the ACC Preseason Team. The two-time All-America selection and member of the Irish National Team led the league with six shutouts and stood second with a 1.27 goals-against average last season. Mink (Haaksbergen, Netherlands) earned NFHCA All-West region honors after leading the Cards with 15 goals and 33 points in ACC Field Hockey Preseason Poll 1. Championship City Louisville s Trager Stadium will serve as the host site for two major field hockey championships in November UofL will kick off the postseason by hosting the ACC Championship Nov. 2-5 and two weeks later will welcome the NCAA DI final four teams. Additionally, Trager Stadium is proud to stage the DI, DII and DIII title games on Nov. 19. While this will be the first time the Cardinals have hosted the ACC Championship, it will be the sixth time that Trager Stadium will serve as the host site for the NCAA Division I Field Hockey National Championship. The event was also staged on the Cardinals home field in 2002, 2005, 2008 and Trager Stadium has also been selected as the host site for the 2018 NCAA Field Hockey Championship. In addition, the NCAA Division II Championship was played at the facility in Located in Cardinal Park on the UofL campus, Trager Stadium opened in 2000 and was expanded in 2008 with a seating capacity of 2,500. 4 Field Hockey Game Notes Tough road ahead Twelve of Louisville s 18 opponents appear in the NFHCA preseason top 25. In addition to their ACC opponents, the Cardinals non-conference slate features matchups against No. 3 Delaware, No. 6 Maryland, No. 11 Michigan, No. 14 Northwestern, No. 19 James Madison and No. 21 American. Home Sweet Home The Cards posted a 7-2 record at Trager Stadium in 2016 to bring their home tally to 32-6 since the 2013 season. The Cards were 8-1 at Trager in On Oct. 17, 2014 Louisville fell 2-1 in overtime to No. 17 Boston College, snapping a 16 -game home victory streak dating back to the 2012 season. Prior to the Boston College loss in 2014, the Cards last home loss came on Nov. 2, 2012 when they fell 2-1 in overtime to then-no. 5 Connecticut in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Championship. In 2013, UofL posted a perfect 10-0 record at Trager Stadium, going undefeated at home for the first time in school history. Louisville carries a 24-game win streak against non-conference opponents at Trager Stadium. The Cardinals have not lost to a non-conference opponent at home since Aug. 24, 2012 when they fell to Northeastern in their season opener. - Louisville also lost a 2-1 decision to UConn on Oct. 6, 2012 when both teams were members of the BIG EAST Conference. Looking Back to 2016 Sowry Tabbed NFHCA West Region Coach of the Year The University of Louisville s Justine Sowry has been named the Front Rush/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) West Region Field Hockey Coach of the Year. Sowry earns the honor after guiding the 2016 Cardinals to a 15-6 overall record and their third-straight NCAA appearance. UofL also posted 3-3 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) to finish in a four-way tie for third. The Cardinals were ranked ninth in the final NFHCA Coaches poll after spending 10 weeks in the top 10, reaching as high as No. 6. Louisville opened the season on a six-game win streak and went on to post a 10-2 record at Trager Stadium including a pair of shutout victories against top 10 teams (No. 3 North Carolina and No. 6 Northwestern). Along with this season s team accomplishments, a program-best six players earned NFHCA All-West Region honors while a school-record five were named to the All-ACC teams. Additionally, for the second straight season, two Cardinals were named NFHCA All-Americans. Statistically, UofL finished the season ranked fifth in the nation with six shutouts and a 1.22 team goals against average. Senior All-America selection Erin McCrudden was second in the nation with 18 assists while fellow All-American Ayeisha McFerran was sixth in the nation with a 1.27 goals against average and seventh with a.755 save percentage. This marks the first NFHCA Regional Coach of the Year honor in UofL s history, but is the third such accolade for Sowry, who also earned Northeast Region Coach of the Year in 2008 and McFerran, McCrudden Earn NFHCA All-America honors Ayeisha McFerran and Erin McCrudden have earned 2016 Longstreth/ National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-America honors as announced on Wednesday. McFerran has been selected to the first team while McCrudden was named to the second team. McFerran earns the honor for the second straight season, making her the first multi-time All-American since 2004 when Jessica Javelet garnered the second of her three selections. She also becomes the third player in program history to earn first team honors, joining Javelet (2005) and Alyssa Voelmle (2014). The sophomore goalkeeper finished the season with an ACCbest 1.27 goals against average and six shutouts. In addition to earning All-America honors, she was also a 2016 Longstreth/NFHCA All-West Region and All-ACC first team selection. McFerran was tabbed ACC Co- Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 18. Last season, she became the first UofL freshman to earn NFHCA All-America honors. McCrudden, a midfielder from Putnam Valley, N.Y., registered a careerbest senior campaign which also included All-ACC second team honors and a selection to the NFHCA Senior Game. The two-time Longstreth/ NFHCA All-West Region honoree led the conference and was second in the nation with 18 assists. The team co-captain was tied for second on the team with 22 points and earned ACC Co-Offensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 18 after scoring the game-winning goal against then-no. 3 North Carolina. With the addition of McFerran and McCrudden, the Cardinals now have 14 All-America selections in the history of the program. Cards Set School Record with Six All-Region Selections UofL placed a region-best six players on the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) All-West Region teams. Erin Mc- Crudden, Ayeisha McFerran, Minout Mink and Nicole Woods earned were named to the first team while Lizzie Gittens and Lotta Kahlert earned second team honors. Louisville was one of eight teams with six or more players listed on the all-region squads. The six selections are also the most in UofL program history. The ACC led all leagues with 38 all-region team members. Cards Place Five on All-ACC teams Five UofL players were among the 23 student-athletes named to the 2016 Field Hockey All-ACC Teams. Ayeisha McFerran was selected to the first team while Erin McCrudden, Nicole Woods, Lizzie Gittens and Minout Mink earned second team honors. Louisville and North Carolina led the league with five selections each. Cards No. 10 in RPI Louisville stood at No. 10 in the final NCAA RPI report released on Nov. 28. The Cards have spent the last three weeks in the top 10, reaching as high as No. 8 spending the first part of the season at No. 11 in the first part of the season. The Cardinals posted a 2-4 record against teams ranked above them in the RPI including: No. 1 Duke (L, 1-2), No. 3 Syracuse (L, 1-2/OT), No. 5 North Carolina (W, 1-0; L, 2-3), No. 6 Virginia (W, 3-2/OT) and No. 8 Delaware (L, 0-1). 7 Head Coach Justine Sowry Justine Sowry Sixth Season South Australia, 1991 Justine Sowry is in her seventh season as head coach of the University of Louisville field hockey team. During her time at Louisville, Sowry has guided the Cardinals to 80 wins, three NCAA tournament appearances and a conference title. In the six seasons that Sowry has been at the helm, UofL has produced six NFHCA All-Americans and 22 All-Region selections. The 2016 Front Rush/NFHCA West Region Coach of the Year guided the 2016 Cardinals to a 15-6 overall record and their third-straight NCAA appearance. UofL also posted 3-3 mark in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) to finish in a four-way tie for third. The Cardinals were ranked ninth in the final NFHCA Coaches poll after spending 10 weeks in the top 10, reaching as high as No. 6. Louisville opened the season on a six-game win streak and went on to post a 10-2 record at Trager Stadium including a pair of shutout victories against top 10 teams (No. 3 North Carolina and No. 6 Northwestern). Along with the 2016 season s team accomplishments, a program-best six players earned NFHCA All-West Region honors while a school-record five were named to the AllACC teams. Additionally, for the second straight season, two Cardinals were named NFHCA All-Americans. The 2015 Cardinals posted a 13-7 overall record and earned the program s second-straight NCAA appearance. The Cards spent seven weeks ranked among the top 10 teams in the nation. Senior Victoria Stratton and freshman Ayeisha McFerran earned NFHCA All-America honors while sophomore Nicole Woods was selected to USA Field Hockey s Under 21 team. Under Sowry s guidance, the 2014 team achieved several milestones en route to an impressive 15-6 overall record. In their inaugural season as members of the perennially strong Atlantic Coast Conference, the Cardinals posted a 3-3 record and finished the regular season tied for third in league standings. Their victories included upsets of No. 4 Duke and No. 1 North Carolina marking the first win over a top-ranked team in program history. Louisville spent six weeks ranked in the top 10 in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association rankings, reaching as high as No. 5. Behind their impressive strength of schedule, the 2014 Cardinals earned an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament. Senior Alyssa Voelmle went on to earn first team 2014 NFHCA All-America honors, become the eighth All-American in school history and only the second first team selection. Voelmle joined teammates Elisa Garcia, Paige Monsen, Sydney King and Mallory Mason on the NFHCA All-West Region team. In 2013 the Cardinals posted a 15-5 record - the most wins since and earned a share of the BIG EAST Regular season title with a 6-1 record in league play. Additionally, Louisville registered a perfect 10-0 record at Trager Stadium for the first time in program history. The Cardinals finished the season ranked No. 15 and were a mainstay in the 2013 NFHCA top 20 rankings, appearing as high as No. 14 where they spent four weeks. The 2012 Cardinals posted a 12-8 overall record and made their eighth straight appearance in the BIG EAST semifinals. Three players earned all-conference honors while Amber Thomas was selected to the NFHCA All-Region team. In her first season at the helm, Sowry s 2011 team featured six underclassmen in the starting lineup and posted 10 wins while earning the Cards seventh straight appearance in the BIG EAST semifinals. Five players earned league honors and Hayley Turner was named BIG EAST Co-Offensive Player of the Year. Additionally, Turner and Collins were NFHCA All-West Region selections. Turner went on to become the seventh player in program history to earn All-American status. She joined the Cardinals on December 16, 2010 when Vice President for Athletics Tom Jurich announced that she would become the program s eighth head field hockey coach. Sowry returned to where her collegiate coaching career started when she was an assistant under head coach Pam Bustin from 1998 through Sowry came to U of L after four seasons as the head coach at UMass. During her time there, she compiled a overall record, including a mark of 22-4 in Atlantic 10 play. Under her guidance, the Minutewomen earned powerhouse status in the Atlantic 10 and on the national level, claiming three A-10 championships and NCAA appearances (2007, 2008 and 2010). She was a three-time A-10 Coach of the Year and was twice named the NFHCA Division I Northeast Region Coach of Year. During her four-year tenure there, she coached 19 A-10 All-Conference selections, 17 All-Region selections, and five All-Americans. Sowry led the team to three conference titles and three NCAA tournament appearances. The Minutewomen posted 17 wins in the 2008 season and reached as high as No. 9 in the NFHCA rankings. Sowry s teams also produced solid defensive efforts, being consistently ranked among the nation s top 10 in shutouts and goals-against average. Prior to her time at UMass, Sowry served as a USA High Performance Coach with the U.S. Field Hockey Association (USFHA) from During her stint there, she was the director of all goalkeeping programs. Sowry coached Amy Tran, who was named the Goalkeeper of the Tournament at the 2006 World Cup in Madrid, Spain in addition to being named to the FIH World Team of the Year. While Sowry was an assistant coach with the U.S. National team in 2006, the team placed sixth in the world at the games in Madrid. She also assisted with the 2005 Junior National Team which placed seventh in the Junior World Cup in Santiago, Chile. Before joining the USFHA, Sowry spent a year as an assistant coach for the Stanford University field hockey program (2003). Sowry began her coaching career at the University of Louisville, where she spent five years ( ) as an assistant coach to Pam Bustin. She aided Bustin in orchestrating one of the most remarkable programbuilding efforts in the nation. In their first season, the Cardinals snapped a 34-game losing streak and went on to produce winning records in each season from including the MAC conference championship in The Adelaide, Australia-native was a member of the Australian National Hockey Team from She tallied 128 international appearances, and was a member of the country s 1996 and 2000 Olympic squads.
