2 2004 OUTLOOK 2004 OUTLOOK After ruling the Atlantic 10 conference the past two seasons, the University of Richmond women s field hockey team hopes to attack its two consecutive titles and make an impact in the NCAA Tournament. This program has improved tremendously in the past two seasons, but we must continue to rewrite our history and outdo the Richmond teams which came before us. We want to take the next step and advance beyond the first round of the NCAA Tournament, remarked head coach Ange Bradley. We want to leave new footprints to be filled and surpassed by future Spider teams. Last season, the Spiders finished with an 18-5 record and compiled a 6-0 mark in conference play for the second consecutive year. After claiming the conference championship, Richmond fell to Berkeley in the NCAA play-in-game but still advanced to the tournament, earning its first-ever at-large bid. For the second straight year, the Spiders fell to state-rival Old Dominion in opening round action. The Spiders earned their first national ranking since 1992 when they appeared in the NFHCA Top 20 poll on September 7 and Richmond ended the season with its highestever national ranking, tying for tenth. The 2004 schedule will challenge the Spiders as they face four schools that finished in the final NFHCA final Top 20 poll and three teams that advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Richmond has also added a number of state rivals with VCU, William & Mary, Virginia, Old Dominion and James Madison all on the schedule. During my tenure we have gradually increased our strength of schedule as our program grew. Our schedule is now in a place that we have demanding opponents that will help prepare us prepare for the conference and NCAA championships, Bradley commented. After playing last year with just four upperclassmen, the Spiders roster is now more experienced with Bradley s first recruiting class in their third year. In the last two years, our underclassmen have been asked to assume a high degree of responsibility both on and off the field. Their maturation, experience and confidence will be invaluable to our success this season. Captains Laura Hur, Allie Howard and Lesley Russell are expected to lead the Spiders to another successful season. FORWARDS Junior Whitney Wells returns as the Spiders leading forward after scoring ten goals last season. She finished tied for third in the conference with 23 points and her ten goals tied for ninth in Allie Howard Laura Hur the program records for single season goals. Whitney improved tremendously throughout the spring season. In addition, she made the USFHA summer league team and trained against high-level talent, increasing both her experience and confidence. After earning a starting position mid-way through her rookie season, sophomore Heather Wrublesky returns in the Spiders attack. Wrublesky tallied two goals last year with appearances in all 23 contests. Heather is a great athlete, possessing speed, hustle and desire. She worked hard to improve her stick skills in the off-season and I expect her to become a leader on the forward line Sophomore Amanda Florio also returns for Richmond s offense after playing all 23 games last year and tallying three goals. With a year s experience and improved confidence, I expect Amanda to be a great attribute to our frontline 8

3 both in her play making ability and finishing skills. She has worked hard this summer to become a member of the USFHA summer league travel team. Junior Jess Stern will make the move to forward after seeing limited minutes in the backfield the past two seasons. Michelle La Force We experimented in spring contests and expect Jess to add depth to our front line. She has great acceleration and stick skills and is very good at drawing corners. Senior Danica Haupt had a strong spring season and will contribute in our offensive attack this year. In addition, freshmen Ashley Loh and Bethany Martin will compete for minutes on the forward line. MIDFIELD The Spiders midfield will be strong with the return of senior Laura Hur and junior Allie Howard. Hur finished eighth in the nation in assists (14) and was named to both the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team and the STX/NFHCA All-Region second team. Hur currently ranks tenth for the program s all-time assists. Laura is an outstanding defender but her true strength is in setting up our attack. She is often overlooked by opponents because of the simplicity of her play. Howard, last year s Offensive Player of the Year for the conference, led the team in scoring with 15 goals while pacing the conference and finishing 17 th in the nation in scoring with 43 points. She was named to the STX/NFHCA All-Region first team and was selected as an alternate for the U.S. U21 team this summer. Allie had a standout sophomore year and her greatest challenge will be learning how to direct her teammates and set the tempo of play for our team. Junior Colleen Wevodau is back in the Spiders midfield after starting 19 contests last year. Wevodau tallied six goals and two assists and finished 11 th in conference with 14 points. Colleen is quick and possesses a great first touch. She has an outstanding shot on goal and I expect her scoring to increase this year. Newcomers Tara Kelly, Shannon Taylor and Holly Cram will also see playing time in the midfield. Cram, an exchange student from Edinburgh University, is a member of Scotland s U21 national team. BACKS Juniors Michelle La Force and Lesley Russell will anchor the Spiders defense after both played in all 23 games last year. La Force contributed one goal and added four assists last year and was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference team. Russell, a member of the Atlantic 10 All-Championship team, added one assist while starting all 23 contests. Both Michelle and Lesley possess tremendous speed and have the ability to overlap into the attack very well. Through this, they help create many of our scoring opportunities. Colleen Wevodau With the loss of All-Conference and All- Region honoree Lydia Decembrino, the Spiders have a big hole to fill and juniors Ashley Barnes and Emma Bradley will be looked upon to fill the void. Bradley finished fifth on the squad in scoring with 15 points off six goals and three assists. Barnes saw action in 17 contests and contributed two scores. Ashley and Emma both had strong spring seasons and are ready to step into the starting role and take on more responsibility. Sophomore Rhiannon Nolt and freshmen Erin Arthur and Annemarie van Wel will all compete for playing time in the Spiders defense. GOALKEEPERS Richmond returns the services of junior Michelle Swartz in the goal. Swartz finished ninth in the country last year with a GAA of 1.21 and recorded eight shutouts. In addition, sophomore Sarah Abboud will challenge Swartz for the starting job after seeing limited playing time last year. I have complete confidence in both of our goalkeepers. I know that both have the ability to do a great job in leading our defense OUTLOOK 9
