2 The 2009 team took a break from its games against Stanford and Cal-Berkley to pose for a team photo in front of the Golden Gate Bridge. Tribe players have had the opportunity to sightsee downtown San Francisco during their trips to the Bay Area. The 2007 team huddled together for a group photo during a yacht cruise of the San Francisco Bay. Members of the 09 team posed for a photo at the famous Fisherman s Wharf of San Francisco. Tribe Traveling with the Tribe Being part of the Tribe lacrosse program means having the opportunity to travel to exciting destinations around the country -- and the world. During the 2008 winter break, the team traveled to Australia for a 10-day visit. During the trip, W&M competed in four exhibition games against the Victoria club team during a six-day stay in Melbourne. The squad also spent four days in Sydney. Under NCAA Bylaws, a team may participate in a foreign tour once every four years, and the Tribe has already begun its fundraising drive for the 2012 international trip. The Tribe has also made a pair of trips to the San Francisco Bay area during the past three years, which has included games against Stanford and Cal-Berkley. While there, the team has enjoyed a scenic yacht cruise of San Francisco Bay, visited the famous Golden Gate Bridge, eaten dinner at the popular Fisherman s Wharf of San Francisco and enjoyed free time in downtown San Francisco. A blog entry from the 2008 winter break trip to Australia can be found on the next page. 2

3 W&M s 10-day visit to Australia included six days in Melbourne and four days in Sydney. The College has already begun its fundraising drive for the 2012 international trip. The Tribe squad posed for a team photo in front of the famous Sydney Opera House. The Tribe climbed the Harbour Bridge while visiting Sydney. Among the many memorable experiences during the trip to Australia was the surfing in Melbourne. travels Below is an excerpt from a blog entry written by Jaime Sellers ( 08) during the Tribe s 10-day trip to Australia in All tinges aside, I would consider myself a relatively well traveled 21-year-old, as I have spent a couple summers and vacations traveling. I have seen plenty of duomos, castles, statues, and museums. Yet nothing I have seen compares to the sight of the entire city of Sydney from atop the harbour bridge. As the first group to climb the bridge, we were, rightfully so, quite nervous. Some of the nerves were humorously resolved within 10 seconds of entering the lobby of the bridge climb company, as there happened to be a picture wall of celebrities who have also scaled the bridge s dimensions (clearly, if they can do it, so can we). The remainder of the nerves subsided (relatively speaking) as we were introduced to our New Zealand native guide and proceeded to make our way through the practice course. Julia, Sara B., and I were accompanied by our parents and our coach, Meg, and trainer Tyler. I really couldn t have asked for a better group to share the skyline with, as I continuously insisted that Julia, the climber behind me, pinch me just to make sure I was in fact, not dreaming. The sky was a radiant shade of blue, and the sun gleamed behind us as we climbed our way towards the top. 1,377 steps and numerous brow wipes later, our shaky legs carried us back to the starting point. As if touring the Sydney Opera House earlier in the day and then viewing the Sydney skyline weren t enough, we then ate a farewell dinner together, and it only added to the day s exquisite memories. Positioned on the water in Circle Quay staring out at the bridge lit for the evening eyes, we ate at quite possibly one of the finest restaurants I have been to in my 21 years. The service, food, and wine were all exquisite and the smiles and pictures flashes seemed to be endless. But better than any food we eat or wine we drink, is the company we, Tribe Lacrosse, keep. As I get older, I appreciate great friends and great people more and more, as it seems most people meet less and less of them. However, in my time with the Tribe, I have found that the opposite has happened. It is easy to lose track of the days as they seem to fly by, and it is easy to forget that not all teams have the understanding coaches and dedicated parents and support staff that we do. As a senior trying to absorb as much time with this team and these people as possible, I can only hope you know how grateful I am. I could not have asked for a better way to create incredible memories upon entering my last chapter with Tribe lacrosse. 3

Since 1982, W&M players have garnered 45 All-America selections and 78 all-conference honors. Additionally, 17 players from the College have been selected as a member of a U.S. National Team. In addition to the tremendous success achieved on the field, the bonds formed among the players extend long after graduation. Each fall, a number of alumnae return to the College for homecoming weekend. Among the weekend s many festivities is the annual alumnae game. Dozens of alumni have competed in the event during the past few years to take on current members of the Tribe. A complete list of W&M players who have earned All-America, All-Conference and National Team honors can be found on p. 28 of the media guide. 4

5 In addition to recording victories at Duke and North Carolina, the 1996 Tribe squad posted a 5-1 CAA mark en route to earning an NCAA Tournament at-large bid. With regular-season triumphs against Virginia and Johns Hopkins, the 2001 Tribe team earned an NCAA Tournament bid. postseason history Throughout the past three decades, the William and Mary lacrosse program has established itself as one of the top teams in the region and earned a number of postseason berths. During a recent eight-year stretch, the Tribe garnered five NCAA Tournament bids. W&M has been on the verge of returning to the national tournament during each of the past two springs, as it has secured backto-back regular-season conference championships. 7 With nine starters returning from last season s team that claimed the program s second consecutive regular season conference title and ranked among the top 20 nationally, there is a tremendous amount of optimism and excitement surrounding the 2010 edition of the William and Mary lacrosse team. The Tribe s talented roster includes an All-American, three all-region honorees and five all-conference selections from last spring. Joining the already impressive group will be a seven-member freshman class that will challenge the returnees for playing time and provide added depth to the lineup. Despite graduating six seniors last spring, this season s squad boasts an abundance of veteran leadership and will be led by a trio of captains who will help guide the Tribe in its quest for a conference championship and an NCAA Tournament berth. A co-captain last season, junior goalkeeper Emily Geary will be joined by senior midfielder Mary Zulty and junior attacker Ashley Holofcener as leaders of this year s team. All three players have distinguished themselves both on and off the field and will be instrumental in helping the Tribe achieve its goals. After establishing itself as one of the most productive offensive teams in the nation last spring, the Tribe returns its top six scorers from the 2009 squad that set the program s single-season record for goals (244) and points (347). Leading the unit will be an All-America candidate in Holofcener. En route to earning first-team All-CAA and second-team all-region distinction in 09, she led the College with 64 points on 34 goals and 30 assists. The assist total ranked second on W&M s singleseason list, while her point total ranked sixth. Holofcener enters the season ranked sixth on W&M s career assist list (48) and is closing in on the top-10 career points list. Helping anchor the attack will be junior Maggie Anderson, who ranked second on the team with 37 goals and ninth in the conference with 2.18 goals per game. The impressive season followed up a terrific freshman campaign in which she started all 19 games and scored 35 goals. A dynamic player with strong leadership skills, Anderson worked hard during the offseason and should once again be an all-conference caliber player this spring. After closing out last season with six straight multigoal efforts and earning a spot on the CAA All-Tournament Team, senior Katie Rees will once again play a significant role on the offensive side. A savvy playmaker, both with and without the ball, she has the potential to earn postseason honors this spring. Three other players who should earn significant playing time will be senior Katie Delaney, sophomore Sally Roberts and freshman Kyrstin Mackrides. After earning five starts as a freshman, Delaney has been a key reserve for W&M during the past two seasons. She has embraced her roll as a senior leader and should continue vying for playing time after a strong fall. Roberts appeared in eight games as a reserve during her freshman season, contributing five goals, and has the opportunity to earn increased playing time as she continues to develop. A prep All-American at Villa Maria Academy, Mackrides has quickly adapted to the collegiate level and should challenge for immediate playing after posting an impressive fall Class Adding depth to the attack corps will be senior Kristin Anderson, sophomore Sam Bos and freshman Meredith Rutherford. Hampered by injuries for much of her career, Anderson saw action in three contests last spring and tallied her first-career goal in the victory at No. 17 Old Dominion, which helped W&M clinch it second straight regular-season league title. An exceptional finisher in the crease, Bos saw limited time in 09 but is a talented player who continues to improve. A four-year letterwinner at Annandale School, Rutherford was a two-time Patriot League Player of the Year. In addition to having a number of talented players in the midfield, the position is perhaps the Tribe s deepest. Leading the group will be a pair of all-conference performers in juniors Grace Golden and Molly Wannen, as well as Zulty. A two-time first-team All-CAA selection and a second-team all-region honoree in 09, Golden led team with 44 goals last season, a figure that ranked 10th on W&M s single-season list. Additionally, the AllAmerica candidate ranked fifth in the league with 2.59 goals per game and eighth with 3.29 points per game. One of the nation s fastest players, Golden is rapidly closing in on the program s career top-10 lists for goals (89) and points (111). One of the team s most-versatile athletes, Wannen garnered second-team All-CAA distinction last spring after leading the team with 40 draw controls, a figure that ranked fifth on W&M s single-season list. After finishing 09 with hat tricks in three of the final five contests, Wannen has continued to take her game to the next level during the offseason and has the opportunity to challenge for all-region and all-america honors in Chosen as a captain, Zulty bring a tremendous amount of experience to the field this season. The senior all-conference candidate has appeared in 50 games during her career at the College and ranked fourth on the squad with 39 points on 29 goals and 10 assists a season ago. Additionally, she ranked tied for fourth in the conference with three game-winning goals. Other returnees who figure to make a significant impact are senior Annie Macomber, junior Kaitlyn Gambrell, sophomore Stephanie Steinweg and sophomore Jenny Michael. A tenacious, aggressive and fast player, Macomber has served as a reserve during the past three seasons but could earn an increased roll this spring after improving tremendously during the offseason. A defensive-minded midfielder, Gambrell has appeared in 26 games during the past two seasons and is a smart player who has a good feel for the game. After earning playing time in 10 games as a freshman in 09, Steinweg is a reliable player who should earn an increased roll this spring. A draw specialist, Michael had a great fall and will be looking to see her first collegiate action after missing last year with a knee injury. Joining the midfield this season are a trio of freshmen who will add important depth to the position. Katie Stillwell has demonstrated significant promise and has the potential to make an immediate impact at both ends of the field. Brett Hayes will also compete for immediate playing time, as she possesses great speed and has quickly adapted to the collegiate level. A two-time US Lacrosse All-America honoree, Caitlin Murphy is an intense competitor who will also push the veterans and vie for minutes during her initial season. Perhaps the Tribe s strongest area this season will be the defense, as the unit is arguably the most athletic group in the program s history. Led by All-American junior Sarah Jonson, the unit s play will have a significant impact on the team s success this season. Jonson became the program s 45th All-America selection after leading the conference and ranking sixth nationally with 2.29 caused turnovers last year; her 39 caused turnovers equaled a school record. One of the nation s top defensive players, she has continued to improve during the offseason and will once again contend for All-America honors. Helping anchor the defense will be talented sophomore Sarah Mulvey, who earned CAA All-Rookie honors in 09 after starting all 19 games. One of the team s smartest defenders as well as a great communicator, she should once again contend for postseason honors. After missing last season with a shoulder injury, junior Emma Starnes returns this spring and will be a significant figure in the Tribe s lineup. Starnes made an immediate impact as a freshman in 2008, as she started all 19 contests and ranked fourth on the team with 30 ground balls. Having earned a year of experience at the collegiate level in 09, sophomores Denise Lenihan and Lauren Canning both return as key reserves who should make a significant impact this season. Both players saw limited action as reserves last spring but posted impressive offseasons and fit well into the Tribe s system. Adding depth to the defense will be sophomore Lauren Binzer and freshman Hannah Clarke. Binzer will be making the transition to defense after serving as the Tribe s backup goalkeeper last season, while Clarke is one of the fastest players on W&M s roster. Goalkeepers After starting both of her first two seasons at the College, Geary returns to the cage as one of the nation s most experienced and talented goalkeepers. The twotime team captain ranked fifth nationally in ground balls last year (3.45 per game) after ranking fifth nationally in saves (193) as a freshman. A terrific athlete, she has continued to improve during the offseason and will be a strong candidate for postseason honors. Backing up in goal will be freshman Katie Geary, Emily s sister. A three-year letterwinner at Radnor High School, she helped her team win back-to-back Pennsylvania State Championships in 2008 and
