6 Head Coach Christine Halfpenny 4 During the summer of 2006, the College of William and Mary began a new era in the proud history of its lacrosse program, naming Christine Halfpenny the school s sixth head coach. Halfpenny came to the College after a three-year stint as the top assistant at Duke University. I am thrilled at the opportunity to lead William and Mary lacrosse back to the success of its past, said Halfpenny. Obviously, this is a program with rich tradition and history, and I am just thrilled to be a part of the future here. [Former head coach] Tara Brown worked hard to build the program to where it is today, and I am looking forward to working with these players and building upon the foundation that is in place. There really is endless potential here, and I have a great vision for the future of Tribe lacrosse. Halfpenny was part of a Duke staff that guided the Blue Devils to the 2005 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship and three-straight NCAA Tournament appearances, including national semifinal appearances in each of the past two seasons. While in Durham, Halfpenny s duties included serving as the head recruiting coordinator, team academic coordinator, strength and conditioning liaison, travel coordinator and compliance coordinator. The past two seasons, Halfpenny has served as the goalkeeper coach, mentoring cur- rent Tribe assistant Megan Huether to First Team All- America honors in 2005, the same year the standout netminder was named the IWLCA/US Lacrosse Goalie of the Year. In each of her three seasons at Duke, Halfpenny s recruiting classes were ranked among the nation s top four, according to Inside Lacrosse, and included the nation s top class in She showed an equal commitment to work in the classroom, as the Blue Devils posted the nation s top team GPA (3.46) in 2004 and the nation s second-best team GPA (3.42) in Additionally, Halfpenny saw over 50 Blue Devils named to the ACC Honor Roll between 2004 and Prior to her stint at Duke, Half- penny was an assistant coach at her alma mater, Virginia Tech, during the academic year. In Blacksburg, Halfpenny served as the Hokies head recruiting co- ordinator, travel coordinator and offen- sive coordinator. Halfpenny began her collegiate coaching career at Brown University as an assistant during the 2001 and 2002 seasons. The Halfpenny Family: Jackson, Christine and Matt An active camp coach and counselor since 2000, Halfpenny directed the Duke Winter Lacrosse Camp in and has served as an assistant director at a variety of camps across the country. She is also an active member of both US Lacrosse and the IWLCA, serving on the coaches association growth committee in Under Halfpenny s guidance, the College hosted a lacrosse clinic in the fall, and the program will put on another clinic in the spring and a junior day event on the Williamsburg campus. A 1999 graduate of Virginia Tech, Halfpenny was a four-year letterwinner in lacrosse and a starter on the 1999 Hokies team that captured the Atlantic 10 Championship. She received the team s Coaches Award that year and was a member of the Athletic Directors Honor Roll in 1998 and After graduating from Virginia Tech, Halfpenny worked at Cave Spring High School in Roanoke, where she was the head coach of the boys and girls varsity swimming team and assistant varsity tennis coach. She guided the boys swim team to Valley District, Northwest Region and AAA State titles in A native of Latham, N.Y., Halfpenny and her husband, Matt, have one son, Jackson, born on December 7, Matt Halfpenny is an assistant coach with the Tribe s nationally-ranked women s tennis team. 7 Assistant Coaches Tara Hannaford, a 2001 graduate of the College, enters her third season with the program in 2007, continuing in her role as the team s top assistant. A former team captain and All-America performer, Hannaford brings a tremendous amount of coaching and athletic administration experience to the Tribe staff. Hannaford primarily works with the team s attack, including offensive strategy, technique and skills, in addition to serving as the program s recruiting coordinator and academic coordinator. She is also instrumental in practice planning, scouting, game day management and team building. Tara has been a huge help with the transition to the new coaching staff, and really the new culture and attitude of the program, said head coach Christine Halfpenny. It was very apparent from when I started that Tara and I have the same vision for Tribe Lacrosse. As a W&M alum and having played on the last NCAA Tournament team here, Tara knows what it takes to win, and I think that is a major advantage for us. Prior to her current position, Hannaford assisted in the direction of the women s lacrosse program at the Cate School in Carpinteria, California for two years, in addition to serving as the Assistant Director of Athletics and women s water polo coach. In addition to her coaching duties, Hannaford handled the scheduling of athletic events, organized team travel, performed game-day logistics and acted as a dorm supervisor, student advisor and junior class advisor. While at the Cate School, Hannaford also served as the National Tournament Coach for Pacific Regional Lacrosse in May 2003 and As a camp mentor at STX Lacrosse Camps during the summers from 1999 to 2003, she taught a variety of lacrosse skills and strategies, in addition to enhancing campers social and communication skills through individual and team-building activities. A third-team All-American and two-time, first-team All-Colonial Athletic Association performer during her playing days, Hannaford also worked as a student assistant for the sports information department at the College, in addition to being a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority. In 2001, Hannaford led the Tribe to the CAA semifinals and a berth in the NCAA Tournament, scoring 42 goals in 16 games, which matched the eighth-best singleseason goal total in school history. She matched the sixth-best single-season total a year earlier, tallying 43 goals as a junior. Hannaford ranks eighth on the College s all-time scoring list with 141 career points. Hannaford received her Masters in Athletic Administration from Indiana University, where she completed her graduate coursework with a cumulative GPA of William and Mary Lacrosse Former All-American goalkeeper Megan Huether joined the Tribe program as an assistant during the summer of 2006 and is in her first season coaching at the collegiate level. Huether primarily works with the team s defense and goalkeeper and helps with practice planning and administrative duties for camps and clinics. She severs as the team s compliance coordinator and handles general recruiting issues, filming and the team s fitness program. I am pleased to have Megan Huether on our staff, said Halfpenny upon Huether s hiring. The experience and knowledge she brings to our program, having played at such a high level, is invaluable. Huether will begin her collegiate coaching career under her former position coach after completing a standout four-year career at Duke last spring. A two-time All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, Huether was named a First-Team All-American and the National Goalkeeper of the Year by the IWLCA in 2005 after helping lead the Blue Devils to an ACC title and the semifinals of the NCAA Lacrosse Championship. Halfpenny added, Although this will be Megan s first college coaching position, she has already proven herself as an outstanding player, a student of the game, and a tremendous leader. Megan has incredible passion for the game of lacrosse and I am excited to see this pass onto our athletes here at William and Mary. I feel Megan will be one of the best young assistant coaches in the country and we are very lucky to have someone of Megan s integrity and character join our staff. With Huether, a four-year starter in goal, Duke recorded three consecutive trips to the NCAA Championship (2004, 2005, 2006) with another semifinal appearance this past season and posted an overall record of during her career, which included a school-record 18 victories in A native of Lutherville, Md., Huether graduated in May with a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Psychology and was a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection and a three-time Dean s List member at Duke. Active off the field as well, Huether served as the program s summer office assistant in 2005 and was the team s council representative from She also spent time as a student intern with the KidScope Early Intervention Program in Hillsborough, N.C., served as a classroom assistant with the Duke School for Children and was a student assistant with Duke s Children s Campus. A member of the U.S. National Developmental team from 2004 to 2006, Huether also has experience coaching high school goalkeepers and working at a number of lacrosse camps, including Stanford Lacrosse Camp, the Bryn Mawr School Lacrosse Camp in Baltimore and the Between the Pipes Goalie Camp in Reisterstown, Md. 5

8 2007 Season Outlook 6 As Tribe Lacrosse continues to embark on a new era and prepare for its first season under head coach Christine Halfpenny, the excitement and confidence within the program for the 2007 season could be as high as they ve ever been. The foundations of the team s optimism heading into the spring are built on an accomplished seven-member senior class leading the way and a compelling fall season in which the team embraced its new system and attitude. We re very excited to begin the season after a strong fall, said Halfpenny. We made a lot of changes on both sides of the ball, and I think the team really understands what we are trying to achieve. Among the achievements the team will be aiming for are hosting and winning the Colonial Athletic Association Championship, which would also result in the fulfillment of another goal, the program s first NCAA appearance since Halfpenny knows to reach those goals the Tribe will have to rely heavily on its veteran leaders. Some people might say we have very lofty goals, but they re all very attainable. This program has been knocking on the door the past couple years, and I think this senior class knows it is going to take more to get there. It s going to be a season of inches, and this senior group is ready and willing to fight for everyone one of them. Headlining the group are the team s co-captains, Lizzy Bayly and Emily Vitrano. Bayly assumed the role of the squad s defensive leader during her junior season, while Vitrano is a returning First-Team All-CAA attacker who took control of the team s offense in the fall. While the pair have embraced their respective leadership roles at their positions, the duo, along with the entire senior class, has made an important impression on the team in helping to adjust to a new coaching system. The coaching staff is extremely excited about this senior class, said Halfpenny. The group has already shown tremendous leadership through the transition to the new staff, as we try to install a new culture of Tribe lacrosse. There is a great balance of personality and athletic skill, and we couldn t be more thrilled with the group we have leading us. Complimenting the team s veteran assembly is a talented and capable seven-member freshman class, which has the coaching staff equally impressed. Halfpenny thinks as many as three or four will immediately compete for significant playing time and that the entire group is on board with the team s goals and vision. The freshman class has a positive energy at all times, and we re excited to see them develop on the collegiate level. It s a very dynamic group with a high skill level, and as a whole, they will make a big impact. Aiding the maturation of the group and further evidence of the team s leadership balance is the fact that each position includes at least one senior standout, as First-Team All-CAA selection Kristen Wong headlines what could be one of the fastest and deepest midfields in the league. Behind Bayly, Vitrano and Wong, and with eight starters returning from last year s squad that advanced to the semifinals of the league tournament and defeated two top-10 teams, the 2007 edition of Tribe Lacrosse is ready to show it belongs among the nation s best. ATTACK Overall, the attack will be our youngest unit, however we re very lucky to return a first-team all-conference attacker in Emily Vitrano, said Halfpenny. Emily is going to be our offensive leader. She s very excited and has embraced her role as the captain of our attack. Vitrano scored a career-high 39 goals in 2006 and emerged as one of the league s elite offensive players. She is joined by fellow senior Kara Parker and sophomore Dolly Williams as the group s top scoring threats. Parker showed a solid understanding of the new schemes and has a proven ability to find the net after scoring 13 goals last season. Williams has great size for the position and a powerful shot and continues to develop into a scoring threat. Junior Laura Lindsay scored a career-high 12 goals in 2006 and her finishing ability will also play a prominent role this spring, while sophomore Julia Martin is quickly becoming a play-maker with great field vision and passing ability. Junior Meg Rafferty and freshmen Mary Zulty and Kristin Anderson round out the position and will have a chance to compete for playing time. We ve changed a lot of our offensive strategies because we are so young, but I think this group is very dynamic in the attack. A couple of the freshman will have a chance to play a lot of minutes. MIDFIELD One of the major strengths in the midfield will be our speed, said Halfpenny. Our midfielders are true gamers, helping to push the tempo of play on the offensive end, while also making big plays and slowing things down on the defensive side. Wong is the perfect definition of what Halfpenny is seeking in the midfield, as the speedster ranked among the nation s top-seven in both caused turnovers (2.29) and ground balls (3.82) per game last season while also recording career-highs in goals (13), assists (8) and points (21). Adding to the versatility and speed of the group are seniors Jamie Fitzgerald and Anne Harrington and sophomore Clare Dennis. Fitzgerald is coming off a career offensive season with 16 goals and six assists, while Harrington has demonstrated a solid understanding of the team s unit defense and has the ability to counter opponent s transition attack with her speed. Dennis has the potential to make a big impact in the spring and is developing into a full-field player. Junior Jaime Sellers is an attack-minded midfielder who provides a scoring threat coming off an 11-goal season. Freshmen Katie Rees and Annie Macomber are two newcomers who could see significant playing time from the start. Rees has the coaching staff excited about her potential to be a full-field player, while Macomber s offensive ability could provide an immediate boost to the attack. I am excited about the speed, strength and versatility the midfield possesses, and I think we will match up with our tougher opponents this season. DEFENSE We tackled some strategic and tactical areas of our defense in the fall, especially our unit defense which we are very excited about. The defense really came together under the leadership of Lizzy Bayly, and she will be the heart and soul of our defense. Bayly, a returning two-year starter with a commanding presence on the field, is joined by junior Ashley Bolton, who brings two years of starting experience and shutdown defensive ability. A former all-rookie team selection, Bolton caused 18 turnovers last season and is often matched up with an opponent s top attacker. Along with Wong and Harrington s presence in the defensive end, juniors Lauren Coll and Caitlin demello bring starting experience to the group. Senior Kat Klopf, sophomore Kate Lawlor and freshmen Abigail Caso and Katie Delaney all have a chance to compete for playing time and add depth to the position. I think we have a lot of depth, throughout all of the classes, on the defensive end. The younger players are going to be fighting for playing time because they all have different strengths. I m excited to see how they transition into the college game. GOALKEEPER From an outsider s perspective, the goalkeeper position could easily be viewed as a glaring area of concern for the Tribe in 2007, as the roster is void of a netminder with collegiate game experience. However, the play of freshman Sara Beckstead in the fall and during preseason practice quickly won over the confidence of the coaching staff and teammates. Sara has shown a remarkable transition into the college game, said Halfpenny. The team has confidence in her and she has been very consistent. Her presence in the cage as a freshman is amazing. A First-Team All-Anne Arundel County selection and Third-Team All-Met pick by the Washington Post, Beckstead has become a vital part of the defensive communication with her outstanding vision and understanding of the entire system. We re all excited to see what Sara does in the spring. I think she is certainly one of the most promising young goalkeepers out there.

20 2006 Season Review The 2006 season was a big step for the Tribe lacrosse program in restoring its reputation and place on the national lacrosse scene, as W&M recorded its second 10-win season and third winning season since 1997 en route to a second-place finish in the CAA. The Tribe earned victories over three nationally-ranked foes, including a pair of wins over top-10 teams Boston and Penn State. The 2006 season also produced a number of individual accomplishments and extraordinary performances. Notes on the 2006 season follow. W&M Begins Play at Albert-Daly Field In 2006, the Tribe played its inaugural season at Albert-Daly Field, posting a 5-3 record on the home turf. W&M was slated to play its 2005 home schedule on the grass surface of Albert-Daly, but various weather and fieldrelated conditions forced the Tribe to play on the Busch Field Turf. The team opened play at Albert-Daly with a bang, upsetting ninth-ranked Boston. Tribe Places Three on CAA First Team After a 5-2 run through the league regular season and a second-place finish, the Tribe was well represented on the CAA s postseason all-conference team, including three selections on the first-team. Senior Colleen Dalon earned her second All-CAA First-Team nod in as many years, while current seniors Emily Vitrano and Kristen Wong joined Dalon on the first-unit. Morgan Lang was tabbed Second-Team All-CAA as a senior last spring for the second time. Dalon ranked 10th in the CAA in points per game (3.35) and sixth in goals per game (2.71), while Vitrano was not far off the pace, averaging 2.94 points per game and 2.29 goals per outing. Wong was second in the CAA in Colleen Dalon earned her secondstraight First-Team All-CAA selection in both ground balls per game (3.82) and caused turnovers per game (2.18), and Lang was one of the league s top full-field players with 20 goals, 40 ground balls, 29 draw controls and 25 caused turnovers. The Tribe defeated a ninth-ranked Boston team, 12-10, on March 5th and later followed with a win at seventh-ranked Penn State on March 12th. With a 12-6 conference win at 18th-ranked James Madison on April 9th, the Tribe handed the Dukes their only home loss, in 10 games, on the season. Vitrano Gains National Recognition Current senior Emily Vitrano enjoyed a break-out season in 2006 with career-highs in goals (39), assists (11) and points (50) and, fittingly, her accomplishments did not go unrecognized. After scoring a career-best six goals in the Tribe s 12-6 win at 18th-ranked JMU, Vitrano was named the CAA Player of the Week for the first time in her career. She added three assists in the win for a career-high nine points, which also earned Vitrano her second honorable mention national player of the week citation by Inside Lacrosse. The accolades didn t stop there, however, as Vitrano was later featured in the May 1st issue of Sports Illustrated in the magazine s Faces in the Crowd section for her performance against Madison. Vitrano received her first honorable mention national player of the week award after scoring five goals in the win at seventh-ranked Penn State. Dalon Rewrites Tribe Record Book One of the most prolific scorers and offensive weapons in school history, Colleen Dalon capped an outstanding four-year career in 2006, leaving standards in the lacrosse record books that won t soon be surpassed. A two-time First-Team All-CAA performer, Dalon finished her tenure at W&M as the program s third-leading scorer with 183 points, trailing only Morgan Watkins (189) and Pixie Hamilton s school-record 242 points. With her second-straight 46-goal season last spring, Dalon finished with 132 career tallies, second on the school s all-time goals list behind only Hamilton (218). Dalon s two 46-goal seasons stand as the fifth-best single-season totals in school history. Equally as effective passing the ball, Dalon finished fourth on the career assists chart with 51 helpers. Tribe in National Statistics In the final women s lacrosse statistics report by the NCAA, the 2006 Tribe ranked sixth in Division I in draw controls, averaging per game. Individually, Kristen Wong was seventh in ground balls per game (3.82) and seventh in caused turnovers per game (2.18), making her one of only 11 players in the nation to average more than two forced turnovers per outing. Additionally, Colleen Dalon s seven-goal effort in the win at Drexel matched the 10th-best single-game effort in the nation last season, while Emily Vitrano s nine-point performance at JMU matched the 12th-best single-game total. The Tribe played its inaugural season at Albert-Daly field in Kristen Wong records one of her career-high 39 caused turnovers last season vs. Delaware. Wong was seventh in the nation in caused turnovers (2.18). Tribe in The National Rankings W&M s rankings during the year in the IWLCA Top 20 and Inside Lacrosse poll. Date/Week IWLCA Rk. IL Rk.
