Old Bailey Stadium Live stats: None Live broadcast: None Twitter: (will have in-game updates) After earning its first season-opening vicotry since 2006 on the road last weekend, Tech travels south again this weekend, this time to South Carolina to take on Presbyterian College. Scouting Report: Presbyterian College Without many of its statistical leaders from a season ago, the Blue Hose fell to No. 11 Vanderbilt in its season opener last weekend, Lauren Lefeber scored two of PC s goals, while Laura Meade added the third. Susan England manned the cage for the Blue Hose for just over a half and allowed 17 goals, making four saves in her 2011 debut. Series Info: Presbyterian College This will be the second time the Hokies and Blue Hose meet, and Tech is 1-0 alltime against Presbyterian College. The first and only meeting took place last season when the Hokies downed the Blue Hose, 19-5, in Blacksburg. The Hokies are 18-6 all-time against schools currently in the NLC after downing High Point on the road, 18-13, last weekend. Tech will face five total teams from the NLC this season (HPU, PC, Davidson, Liberty, Longwood). Last Time Out The Hokies opened the season with a victory for the first time since 2006, as they defeated High Point, 18-13, in the Panthers first-ever varsity lacrosse game. Seniors Allie Emala and Caitlyn Wier led the way for the Hokies with five points each, Emala with five scores and Wier with five assists. Junior Morgan Widlake got Tech on the board early, scoring 21 seconds into the game, going straight to the goal after a foul on the opening draw control. Though Tech let up in the second half after being up 12-4 at the half, letting the Panthers nearly triple their first-half production, the Hokies held on for the big win. Start of the Show The Hokies are now 6-11 all-time in season openers and 4-5 on the road. Tech opened the season with a victory last weekend, toppping High Point, 18-13, on the road. This was the first time the Hokies have won their first game of the season since 2006, when they defeated UMBC by a nearly identical score Schedule 1-0 Overall, 0-0 ACC 2/12 at High Point W, /19 at Presbyterian 3 p.m. 2/23 at Davidson 6 p.m. 2/26 GEORGE MASON 1 p.m. 3/2 JAMES MADISON 4 p.m. 3/5 GEO. 2 New Year, New Look The Hokies enter the 2011 season with a different look from years past. Former assistant Megan Burker has taken over as the interim head coach, making it her first head coaching job. Burker has assembled a new coaching staff to assist her, as former BU standout and George Washington assistant Lindsay Lewis and Anne Murray, a 2009 Princeton graduate and former Mount St. Mary s assistant, enter their first seasons at Tech. This year s senior class is the largest in more than three years for the Hokies. Tech has graduated three seniors over the past two seasons. The six seniors and nine juniors on this year s roster give Tech the most experience it has seen in a long time, as the team embarks on a new season with its new coaches. The Hokies also welcome a large freshman class as eight newcomers join the Tech squad for Three-Pronged Attack The Hokies will be led this season by three seniors, as Allie Emala, Liz Carpenter and Dylan Garner will serve as the team s tri-captains. Emala and Garner were also named captains last season, along with then-senior Jacquelyn Duggins. The three players combined for 49 scores, 25 assists and 74 points in To begin the season, the three seniors will be providing three very different forms of leadership as Emala is a staple in the starting lineup and spearheads the attack, Garner will provide veteran knowledge and talent off the bench, and Carpenter will lead from the sideline as she works back to full health after an injury. Scoring A Nonn-Issue Junior Jessica Nonn was Tech s scoring specialist last season and picked up right where she left off in Tech s season opener. The Catonsville, Md., native became the first player in recent years to score in every game of the season last year. Nonn put away at least one goal in all 17 games in 2010 and tallied four goals against High Point to carry that streak over into Nonn led the team in scoring last year with 36 goals, while she also topped the ground balls (45) and caused turnovers (30) lists. The Catonsville, Md., native ranked second on the squad in shots (75) and draw controls (33), and third in points (38). Player Spotlight Caitlyn Wier Senior Attacker Senior Caitlyn Wier tallied a new career high for assists in a game against High Point last weekend when she tallied five. Her previous best was four, which she posted last season in the second game of the year again Presbyterian. The Cockeysville, Md., native finished the 2010 season second on the team in assists with 14 and third in scoring with 25 goals. Draw Domination Senior Allie Emala set a new draw controls record last season and continued her dominance this year, tallying seven in Tech s season opener at High Point. Emala entered the season with 185 after winning 88 draws in Youthful Assistance Sophomores Julia Heaps and Brooke Martin were Tech s top newcomers in the field last season, as Martin saw time in all 17 games and Heaps missed just one game but made a class-leading seven starts. The pair opened the season combining for four goals, three assists and seven points in Tech s first game, after totaling 18 goals, seven assists, 23 points and 24 ground balls in Conference Connections Tech will open the season with three-straight games against National Lacrosse Conference members (High Point, Presbyterian College, Davidson) and face two other members (Liberty, Longwood) later in the season. This five-member match up ties Tech s own ACC slate for the most games against a specific conference on this year s schedule. The Hokies will also face four members of the Colonial Athletic Association(George Mason, James Madison, William & Mary, Old Dominion). Sophomore Julia Heaps had an impressive 2011 debut at High Point, tallying four points on three scores and an assit. The Virginia Tech lacrosse team has joined Twitter. North Carolina made an appearence in the Final Four and Maryland earned its 10th national title in program history, snapping Northwestern s five-year title streak. Rough Road Ahead Playing away from Thompson Field has not been an easy task for the Hokies, who are all-time in road games. Tech went 3-6 away from home in 2010 and will begin this season with three-straight road games. Looking to improve on the past, Tech has already gotten out to a positive start this season with a season-opening win at High Point. The Hokies will play nine games on the road this season with the opening three being their longest stretch. Newcomers The Hokies welcome eight new players to campus for the 2011 season. Andrea Ebeling, Taylor Landry, Sammi Mosketti, Becca Niles, Lindsay Roche, Sydney Taylor, Morgan Toland and Kelly Naslonski will join the Hokies as interim head coach Megan Burker will embark on her first season as Tech s new leader.
