SENTARA PARK Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe (18th) (13th) Klaes-Bawcombe vs. TU DUKES FACE RIVAL TOWSON SUNDAY JMU continues CAA play on Sunday afternoon with a rivalry showdown with Towson. The opening draw is set for noon at Sentara and it will be the team s Game Hair Havoc game. This marks the 45th installment of the series, with JMU leading The 2019 JMU lacrosse season is presented by O Neill s Grill. JMU-TOWSON SERIES BY THE NUMBERS JMU and Towson have met 44 times previously, including 24 times over the past 17 seasons since the Tigers joined the CAA. The series began back in 1976 and they never went longer than three years without playing. JMU is all-time, including since the 2002 season. JMU is 10-7 in regular-season conference games and 4-3 in the CAA Championship. Since 2008, JMU and Towson have won every CAA tournament title, with the Tigers claiming six and JMU winning five. The two teams have also won 15 of the past 16 league crowns. JMU is 16-5 all-time vs. Towson in games played in Harrisonburg, having won three straight. Towson s last win in the Burg came six years to the date on April 7, CHAMPION COACHES COLLIDE IN THE VALLEY JMU s Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe and Towson s Sonia LaMonica are proven winners in the CAA, as the duo have combined for eight of the past nine CAA Coach of the Year Awards. Klaes-Bawcombe won the honor in 2010 and has won it the past three years, while LaMonica garnered top coaching honors from JMU has reached the NCAA Championship six times since 2010, reaching the quarters in 2010 and winning the title in Towson has gone dancing five times under LaMonica, winning three postseason games. DEFENSE SHUTS DOWN DELAWARE IN CAA-OPENING WIN Molly Dougherty made 15 saves, including 12 in the first half, and JMU s defense shut down Delaware in a 10-3 win to open CAA play on Friday in Newark, Del. Hanna Haven led the offense with five points on two goals and three assists, and Maddie McDaniel turned in her third hat trick of the year, tallying three goals, one assist, six draws and two caused turnovers. Katie Checkosky also had a goal and two helpers. JMU used a pair of three-goal runs in the first half to take control. The defense held Delaware without a goal for a span of 22 minutes between goals one and two and another 20 before the Hens tallied their final goal. 3 SCOUTING TOWSON The Tigers enter CAA play with a 2-8 overall record, with all eight setbacks coming against nationally-ranked opponents. Towson is looking for its first road win, having lost each of its five games away from home. TU averages 9.5 goals per game while allowing 11.9 to its opponents. Natalie Sulmonte leads the Tigers with 25 goals and four assists, and Kaitlin Thornton has tallied 17 goals and nine helpers. The duo has combined for 62 draw controls. Sami Chenoweth leads the squad with 41 caused turnovers and Kiley Keating holds a.452 save percentage through 10 games. Sonia LaMonica is in her ninth season at Towson, holding a record with the Tigers. She also has a career record. She s guided Towson to four CAA titles, including three straight between RECAPPING LAST JMU-TU MEETING Back on May 6, 2018, JMU captured back-toback CAA championships with a win against Towson at Sentara Park. Kristen Gaudian and Elena Romesburg combined for nine goals to help JMU to its 11th CAA championship in program history. Haley Warden was named CAA Most Outstanding Performer for the second straight year, becoming the league s first player to win the award in consecutive championships. JMU closed the final 7:50 of the first half with a 5-0 run to grab a 10-4 lead at the break. Leading 10-7, JMU produced four straight to put the game away. The Dukes begin the weekend on Friday, April 12 at Drexel in a televised game on NBC Sports Washington Plus and NBC Sports Philly Plus. 6 OTHER TIDBITS JMU CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY March marked the 50th anniversary celebration of JMU lacrosse, which began in The 50th season in 2018 was capped off by the team winning the first lacrosse national championship. The Dukes have won 11 Colonial Athletic Association championships and has been to the NCAA Championship 15 times. JMU has produced 59 All-Americans, 14 CAA Players of the Year and 29 CAA major award winner. Three have also been named finalists for the Tewaaraton Award. THREE ON TEWAARATON WATCH LIST Three JMU players in Hanna Haven, Caroline Sdanowich and Molly Dougherty were named to the 2019 Tewaaraton Award Watch List. It marks the second straight season JMU placed three players on the initial watch list. The Tewaaraton Award, now in its 19th season, is presented annually to the top male and female collegiate lacrosse players in the United States. The selection committees are comprised of premier collegiate coaches and are appointed each year by the Tewaaraton Foundation. The Dukes were one of nine Division I programs with at least three honorees. Maryland led the country with six while Boston College and Florida also had four picks. DUKES THE FAVORITE TO WIN CAA JMU was voted the favorite to win the Colonial Athletic Association title for a third straight season in The Dukes received six first-place votes and 36 points, while rival Towson was selected second with one first-place vote and 31 points. Elon was third, followed by Hofstra, Delaware, Drexel and William & Mary. JMU has won the CAA regular-season title in seven of the past nine seasons, winning five tournament championships during that span. The Dukes have claimed the regular-season crown in each of the previous three seasons, winning the tournament in 2017 and Six players were honored, as making the Preseason All-CAA Team were Hanna Haven, Charlotte Haggerty, Emma Johnson, Caroline Sdanowich and Molly Dougherty. Maddie McDaniel was also Honorable Mention. DOUGHERTY, HAGGERTY PLAY FOR TEAM USA A pair of JMU sophomores were afforded the opportunity to compete with the best players in the world, as both were part of Team USA. Both Molly Dougherty and Charlotte Haggerty were named to the U.S. National Team s roster at the IWLCA President s Cup in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. in November. From there, Dougherty also earned a roster spot for the team s trip to Palo Alto, Calif., for the Spring Premiere at Stanford in January.
