The Blue Devils are 5-5 overall in NCAA semifinal games and 1-2 versus Maryland in those outings. Maryland is the No. 1 seed and defeated Cornell and Robert Morris in the first two rounds. 3 5 BLUE DEVILS EARN ALL-AMERICA Justin Guterding, Brad Smith and C sade Van Raaphorst garnered USILA first team accolades for the first time in their careers to highlight Duke s five selections. JT Giles-Harris collected third team honors and Peter Conley honorable mention. Duke s three first-team picks are the most since having three in Van Raaphorst is the first close defenseman to earn the distinction since Casey Carroll in DUKE RETURNS TO CHAMPIONSHIP WEEKEND With the 14-9 win over Johns Hopkins, Duke returns to championship weekend for the first time since winning the title in This marks the first trip for the Duke seniors, a distinction much discussed prior and during the season. The Blue Devils are the lone program to have every one of its senior classes advance to a national semifinal since Maryland, Johns Hopkins and Syracuse were all close, but all suffered droughts of more than four years at one point. DUKE, DANOWSKI AIMING FOR NCAA TITLE 4 Duke, the winner of the 2010, 2013 and 2014 NCAA crowns, is one of eight programs to own multiple NCAA titles as it goes for No. 4 this weekend. Maryland also has three. Syracuse leads the way with 10. Head coach John Danowski is one of four active coaches to own multiple NCAA titles. He is third among the group with three, while Bill Tierney of Denver leads the way with 7. The Blue Devils are one of four schools to have an active streak of 10 consecutive appearances. The Blue Devils are all-time in the NCAA Tournament. The 35 wins are fifth among Division I teams. Duke is 5-5 in semifinal games overall and 4-4 under John Danowski. Duke is seeded fourth for the second time program history. The Blue Devils also were seeded fourth in 1999, losing to Georgetown in the opening round. Duke is 3-0 in overtime NCAA Tournament games and 2-0 under John Danowski. Duke has won 29 of its past 38 NCAA playoff games. Three of the losses came against Johns Hopkins in the 2005 and 2007 title games and the 2008 semifinals and two against Ohio State. Overall, the Blue Devils are 30-9 in NCAA action when scoring at least 10 goals and 1-9 when held to single digits. Duke is one of nine schools with more tournament wins than postseason appearances (Cornell, Denver, Duke, Johns Hopkins, Maryland, North Carolina, Princeton, Syracuse & Virginia). Duke s 19 NCAA Tournament wins since 2010 are second behind Maryland s 22. LAST TIME WE MET The final ACC meeting between Duke and Maryland was a No. 1 vs. No. 3 matchup with the third-ranked Terrapins coming away with the 10-6 victory over the No. 1 Blue Devils. Maryland used a 7-0 run over a span of 27:46 to secure the win. Jordan Wolf led Duke with two goals and an assist, while Josh Dionne chipped in two tallies. Luke Aaron anchored the defense with a career-high 15 saves. Mike Chanenchuk led the charge for the Terps with five goals and six points. DUKE VS. MARYLAND SINCE 2007 Sunday will mark the 10th time Duke and Maryland will face off both ranked in the top 10 and just the fourth time as top five squads in modern history. The Terrapins enter the matchup ranked frist in the most recent USILA poll. Guterding is one of eight Blue Devils to earn the distinction and one of six under head coach John Danowski. He is overall, going 4-8 in eight appearances at Hofstra and 26-8 in his 12 at Duke. Justin Guterding paced the Blue Devils with three goals and two assists, while Danny Fowler made 11 saves between the pipes. Nakeie Montgomery tallied two goals 60 seconds apart to break open a one-goal game in the fourth quarter. Joe Robertson also had two goals and Brian Smyth was outstanding at the faceoff X, winning 18- of-25 draws and picking up nine ground balls. LOOKING AT DUKE Duke heads into the NCAA semifinals with a 15-3 overall record after beating Johns Hopkins. It is the ninth time since 2005 the Blue Devils have reached the 15-win mark. Senior attackman Justin Guterding put his name at the top of the NCAA records book last weekend, scoring his 207th career goal to pass Zack Greer s record 206. He leads the country in scoring with 61 goals and 43 assists for 104 points - a Duke singleseason record. Rookie Joe Robertson complements him on attack with 54 points. In the midfield, junior Brad Smith has a career-best 61 points and graduate student Peter Conley has chipped in 35. Defensively, Duke is holding opponents to 8.44 goals per game. Cade Van Raaphorst and JT Giles- Harris anchor the close defense with 18 and 20 caused turnovers, respectively. In goal, Danny Fowler sports a 8.40 goals against average and a.538 save percentage. Joe Stein and Brian Smyth share duties at the faceoff X. Stein is 98-of-175 (.560), while Smyth is 132-of-250 (.528). They have 39 and 69 ground balls, respectively. SCOUTING MARYLAND Maryland advanced to its fifth straight semifinal with a 13-8 victory over Cornell Sunday. The Terrapins are 14-3 overall and are the nation s top team. Featuring the nation s No. 9-ranked offense at goals per game, Maryland is led by Connor Kelly s 78 points from 45 goals and 33 assists. Jared Bernhardt has 54 points and Logan Wisnauskas 47. Overall, Maryland has just six double-digit point scorers in On the defensive side of the ball, the Terrapins are allowing 9.24 goals per game and holding teams to.274 shooting percentage. Curtis Corley leads the way with 13 caused turnovers, while three other players have 11 apiece. In goal, Dan Morris has played all but eight minutes in goal and owns an 8.94 goals against average and a.529 save percentage. Justin Shockey has taken the majority of faceoffs, winning 123-of-227 (.542). Austin Henningsen also has been key at the X, winning 91-of-176 draws (.517). Maryland has won at least 50 percent of the faceoffs in eight games this year. Johns Hopkins, Duke s most recent opponent, won the faceoff battle with its Big Ten rival in both outings this season. The Blue Devils are forcing the issue and are third in the conference and 20th in Division I in caused turnovers per game with a 7.50 average. Last season, in which Duke posted one of its best defensive campaigns, the Blue Devils were fourth in the ACC and 46th among Division I teams with only 6.17 caused turnovers per game. 7 DANOWSKI SITS ATOP WINS LIST Head coach John Danowski etched his name at the top of the Division I men s lacrosse wins list in 2017, beating Jacksonville for his 376th career victory. Dom Starsia held the previous record of 375. Danowski is third among active coaches across all three divisions and would be the first Division I head coach to reach 400 wins if Duke can win a national title. A week later, the Dallas native scored two goals in 60 seconds to break open Duke s one-goal lead in the fourth quarter. Prior to the NCAA Tournament, Montgomery had just six goals and two assists in 15 games. He earned a start on the first midfield for one game during the regular season. CONLEY, SMITH A SPECIAL DUO Graduate student Peter Conley and junior Brad Smith make quite the dynamic duo as two thirds of Duke s first midfield. 8 GUTERDING S ASSIST GAME STILL THRIVING Guterding averaged 2.56 assists per game in 2017, more than a one assist per game improvement of his 1.4 in His pace has stayed steady from last year, averaging 2.39 assists per game in His 46 total in 2017 rank fifth in Duke singleseason history, while his 43 in 2018 are sixth. Only Matt Danowski and Ned Crotty have more assists in a season at Duke than Guterding. Guterding has 135 career helpers to rank third on the career charts. Danowski and Crotty sit atop the list with 183 and 147, respectively. MORE GUTERDING NUMBERS With nine points at Virginia, Guterding became the first Blue Devil to record at least 70 points in each of his four seasons. He amassed 70, 71 and 97 in the first three seasons and has 104 this year. He also is the fastest Blue Devil to 100 and 300 career points and is tied as the fastest player to 200 points. With five points in the NCAA quarterfinal, Guterding broke Jordan Wolf s Duke single-season record of 103 and stands at 104 points - 12th in NCAA history. 9 VAN RAAPHORST S ATHLETIC LINEAGE Junior close defenseman Cade Van Raaphorst traded the football for the lacrosse stick despite hailing from a family of elite college quarterbacks. Cade is the son of Jeff Van Raaphorst, quarterback at Arizona State leading the Sun Devils to the Pac-10 and Rose Bowl titles in He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in Jeff also played in the NFL for a few seasons. Uncle, Mike Van Raaphorst, was the backup quarterback to Carson Palmer at Southern California. 11 JOHN DANOWSKI 2007-P (35 seasons) at Duke (11 seasons) Cemented as one of the top coaches in college lacrosse, John Danowski has led the Duke men s lacrosse team to unprecedented success and himself to the top over the Division I men's lacrosse wins list. Danowski was introduced as Duke s eighth head men s lacrosse coach on July 21, 2006, and quickly led the Blue Devils to some of the most successful lacrosse seasons in school history, to three NCAA Championships in five seasons. In Danowski s 11 years at the helm of the Blue Devils lacrosse program, he has compiled an impressive record in leading Duke to seven ACC regular season titles and four ACC tournament titles, eight straight appearances in the national semifinals from , four in the NCAA title match and ultimately to the 2010, 2013 and 2014 national titles. The 2014 NCAA crown put Danowski, a winner of 398 career games, among a small group of nine coaches to win three national titles and among eight to capture consecutive crowns. Meanwhile, Duke s run of eight straight NCAA semifinals rank as the second most of any program since 2000 with Syracuse. Most recently, Danowski passed Dom Starsia as the winningest Division I lacrosse history, garnering his 376th win with a 13-6 victory over Jacksonville in A winner of nearly 80 percent of his games at Duke, the individual awards Blue Devil players have garnered is equally impressive. In 11 seasons, Danowski mentored 64 All-America selections, 41 All-ACC choices, two Tewaaraton Trophy winners, a pair of USILA Attackman of the Year honorees, a USILA Defenseman of the Year, three USILA Midfielder of the Year award recipients and 21 USILA Scholar All-America picks. While the success on the field is unsurpassed in Duke lacrosse history, the student-athletes excellence in the classroom also is unrivaled. The Blue Devils consistently lead the ACC in All-ACC Academic picks as well as players on the ACC Academic Honor Roll.
