Duke led 7-4 at the half, but the Quakers used a strong 6-2 second half to come away with the win. Duke led by as many as four, 7-3. Penn netted a goal with six seconds left in the second period that sparked a 3-0 run by the Quakers to make it 7-6 early in the fourth quarter as Duke went scoreless in the third. The Blue Devils jumped ahead by three again only to have Penn answer with the game s final four goals to secure the victory. LAST TIME OUT Both Justin Guterding and Brad Smith tallied two goals and an assist apiece, while rookie midfielder Nakeie Montgomery netted his first collegiate goal and posted two overall. Danny Fowler made a season-high 11 saves in the cage. Duke won just 7-of-22 faceoffs and went on a 19:47 scoreless stretch between the third and fourth quarters. LAST TIME WE MET Bolstered by three goals each from Jack Bruckner and Justin Guterding, 17th-ranked Duke rallied from a 6-2 third-quarter deficit to upend 16th-ranked Richmond, 9-8 in Richmond in With the game knotted at 6-6 after three quarters, Richmond s JP Forester put the Spiders back in front 7-6 in the early minutes of the fourth period. The Blue Devils, behind play from Bruckner and Guterding, stormed ahead 9-7 with three consecutive tallies. The Spiders pulled within one on a goal by Forester with 5:35 remaining, but Duke goalkeeper Danny Fowler made his 10th and final save of the afternoon with 1:06 left in the game before JT Giles-Harris preserved the victory by intercepting Richmond s last gasp heave as time expired. At the faceoff X, Kyle Rowe won 11-of-19 draws and secured five ground balls. CHEMOTTI RETURNS TO DURHAM For the second time since being named Richmond s head coach in advance of its inaugural season in 2014, Dan Chemotti returns to his alma mater. Chemotti s first visit as a head coach was a memorable one as the Spiders upset Duke in A 2002 Duke graduate, Chemotti helped lead the Blue Devils to consecutive ACC titles his junior and senior years. The Blue Devils advanced to the NCAA Tournament in each of his four seasons and he was elected captain as a senior. SCOUTING RICHMOND Richmond comes to Durham after an 11-7 loss to Notre Dame last weekend. The Spiders are 2-2 with wins over Bucknell and Mount St. Mary s. The Spiders are led on offense by Teddy Hatfield s 15 points (11g, 4a). Ryan Lanchbury has a team-best six goals and seven points overall. Richmond is averaging 8.75 goals per game and shooting just.265 for the year. The Spiders have scored in double figures just once this season. Sean Menges leads the defense with 17 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Garrett Smith handles the faceoff duties, winning 39-of-87 draws (.448) and picking up six ground balls. In goal, Blake Goodman is 2-2 with a 9.06 goals against average and a.556 save percentage. The Spiders are allowing 9.50 goals per game. BALL SECURITY The Blue Devils lead the nation in fewest turnovers per game, averaging only 8.80 per game. Duke had a season-high 12 turnovers against Jacksonville and a season-low seven versus Air Force and Penn. 3 WHAT GIVES Duke enters Saturday s contest with the nation s No. 2 scoring offense, while Richmond features a stout defense allowing only 9.50 goals per game. The Blue Devils have scored at least 15 goals in four of five games and Richmond has allowed double-digit goals in only two of its four outings. In addition, Duke s eighth-ranked man-up offense will be going up against Richmond s eighth-ranked man-down defense. The Spiders have allowed just two man-up scores in 12 man-down situations (.833) and Duke has scored six extra-man goals on 11 chances (.545). BLUE DEVILS STILL TOPS IN SHOT PERCENTAGE Despite scoring just nine goals on 32 shots a.281 shot percentage at Penn, the Blue Devils remain atop the Division I shot percentage list at.434. Dom Starsia held the previous record of 375. Danowski is third among active coaches across all three divisions and is on pace to become the first Division I head coach to reach 400 wins potentially in the 2018 season. 4 OPPONENT SCORING DROUGHTS Duke returned the core of the 2017 defense that turned in its best season since The Blue Devils haven t missed a beat, holding three of five teams scoreless in the first quarters and four of the five foes to at least one scoring drought over 15 minutes. The 40 goals are tied for the third fewest in five games to start a season under Danowski. The 2008 squad sacrificed just 27 in its 5-0 start. GUTERDING IN THE RECORD BOOKS Justin Guterding is moving up in the Duke and NCAA record books. He currently ranks fourth at Duke and 23rd in NCAA history in career points and is 26 points shy of becoming the third Blue Devil and 13th player in NCAA history to 300 career points. His 161 goals are two away from breaking into the top 30 in career goals. If Guterding matches his 51 goals total from he needs 34 more - he will finish with 197, good for third in NCAA history. Zack Greer is the lone player in Division I lacrosse to score 200 career goals. Guterding needs 39 more to reach that mark and 45 to tie Greer s 206. Guterding has 111 career helpers to rank fifth on the career charts. Danowski and Crotty sit atop the list with 183 and 147, respectively. 70, 71, 72 AND COUNTING FOR GUTERDING With four points at Marquette in 2017 Justin Guterding became the first Blue Devil to record at least 70 points in each of his first three seasons, going for 70, 71 and 97 in his respective seasons. He also is the fastest Blue Devil to 100 career points and is tied for the fastest player to 200 points. Guterding registered 97 points in 2017 to become the fourth different Blue Devil in program history to score 90 points in a season. His total is tied with current assistant coach Matt Danowski for second on the Duke single-season list. Only Jordan Wolf has scored 100 points in a season for Duke and just 15 different Division I players have reached the century mark in NCAA history 17 times - Lyle Thompson of Albany has done so three times. He is one of four Blue Devils to rank in the top 10 in school history in career points (274), goals (163) and assists (111). The others are Matt Danowski, Jordan Wolf, and Dave Hagler. 5 JOE ROBERTSON ROOKIE IMPACT Rookie attackman Joe Robertson is off to a strong start for the Blue Devils, tallying 13 goals and six assists for 19 points in his five games. In the past three games he has 13 points from eight goals and five assists and was named to the USILA Team of the Week following his four-goal outing in the fourth quarter against Denver. Robertson, averaging 2.60 goals and 3.80 points per game, is eighth in goals per game and seventh in points per game amongst Division I rookie scorers in both categories. He is 10th in assists at 1.20 per game. NCAA ACTIVE LEADERS Duke has a pair of players peppered throughout the top 10 NCAA DI active leaders lists. Justin Guterding and Danny Fowler represent the Blue Devils on the lists. FRESHMEN TID BITS Duke welcomed a group of 10 freshmen to campus this fall. It is a talented group with four listed among Inside Lacrosse s top 100. They are among the eight players nationally to have seen action in at least 53 contests heading into the 2018 season. Duke and Albany both have three players on the list and Maryland the other two. His stock continues to rise as he matched his career high with four points (3g, 1a) in the season opener and has 13 points through four games. As a rookie in 2016, Smith had nine goals and five assists and registered multiple points in four games. In 18 games in 2017, Smith had multiple points in 12 outings and nearly tripled his scoring output. Raines Shamburger Avon Old Farms ALL IN THE FAMILY FOR GILES-HARRIS Sophomore close defenseman John Thomas (JT) Giles-Harris isn t the only one from his family making a name for himself as a Blue Devil. JT s brother, Joe, is Duke s top defensive player on the Duke football team. He garnered four All-America awards in 2017, including second-team honors by the Walter Camp Foundation. VAN RAAPHORST S ATHLETIC LINEAGE Junior close defenseman Cade Van Raaphorst traded the football for the lacrosse stick despite hailing from a family of elite college quarterbacks. Cade is the son of Jeff Van Raaphorst, quarterback at Arizona State leading the Sun Devils to the Pac-10 and Rose Bowl title in He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in Jeff also played in the NFL for a few seasons. Uncle, Mike Van Raaphorst, was the backup quarterback to Carson Palmer at Southern California. UP NEXT Duke starts a three-game road swing at No. 9 Loyola next weekend. 7 JOHN DANOWSKI 2007-P (35 seasons) at Duke (11 seasons) Cemented as one of the top coaches in college lacrosse, John Danowski has led the Duke men s lacrosse team to unprecedented success and himself to the top over the Division I men's lacrosse wins list. Danowski was introduced as Duke s eighth head men s lacrosse coach on July 21, 2006 and quickly led the Blue Devils to some of the most successful lacrosse seasons in school history, to three NCAA Championships in five seasons and. In Danowski s 11 years at the helm of the Blue Devils lacrosse program, he has compiled an impressive record in leading Duke to seven ACC regular season titles and four ACC tournament titles, eight straight appearances in the national semifinals from , four in the NCAA title match and ultimately to the 2010, 2013 and 2014 national titles. The 2014 NCAA crown put Danowski, a winner of 383 career games, among a small group of nine coaches to win three national titles and among eight to capture consecutive crowns. Meanwhile, Duke s run of eight straight NCAA semifinals rank as the second most of any program since 2000 with Syracuse. Most recently, Danowski passed Dom Starsia as the winningest Division I lacrosse history, garnering his 376th win with a 13-6 victory over Jacksonville. A winner of nearly 80 percent of his games at Duke, the individual awards Blue Devil players have garnered is equally impressive. In 11 seasons, Danowski mentored 64 All-America selections, 36 All-ACC choices, two Tewaaraton Trophy winners, a pair of USILA Attackman of the Year honorees, a USILA Defenseman of the Year, three USILA Midfielder of the Year award recipients and 21 USILA Scholar All-America picks. While the success on the field is unsurpassed in Duke lacrosse history, the student-athletes excellence in the classroom also is unrivaled.
