Faceoff is set for 12:03 pm on Saturday, May 19 and the game will air live nationally on ESPN2. Last Time Out: Johns Hopkins jumped out to a 7-1 lead and never looked back in a 19-9 victory over Stony Brook in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Maryland built an early 6-1 lead, fell behind and then rallied late to top host Lehigh in its first round game. A Look Ahead: The winner of this week s quarterfinal game between Johns Hopkins and Maryland will take on the winner of the Duke-Colgate game in the NCAA Semifinals next Saturday in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The time of that game will be determined on Sunday evening (May 20). Noting JHU in the NCAA Tournament: Johns Hopkins is making its 41st consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament. By comparison, the next five longest active streaks of qualifying for the NCAA Men s Lacrosse Tournament add up to 37 consecutive appearances (Maryland-10, Virginia-8, Notre Dame-7, Duke-6, North Carolina-6). At Navy in the NCAAs: Johns Hopkins is 2-1 all-time in NCAA Tournament games played at Navy. The Blue Jays knocked off Notre Dame in the first round of the 1992 tournament (15-7) and Navy in the 2008 quarterfinals (10-4) before falling to Virginia (19-8) in the 2009 quarterfinals. Series History: Johns Hopkins and Maryland are meeting for the 109th time in a series that dates to a 10-0 Johns Hopkins win in The Blue Jays lead the all-time series, , but Maryland picked up a 9-6 win at Homewood Field earlier this season (April 14). The Terps took that meeting, 11-10, in overtime at Byrd Stadium. Scouting the Terrapins Maryland Quickly: Maryland carries a 10-5 record into this week s NCAA quarterfinal matchup against Johns Hopkins. The Terps are looking to return to Championship Weekend for the second straight year after falling in the national championship game a year ago. More of the Same - Offensively: It s been just over a month since Maryland walked out of Homewood Field with a 9-6 win over the Blue Jays and the Terps will bring that talented offense to this week s game. Nine different players have 14 or more points on the year and eight have scored 14 or more goals. Senior attackman Joe Cummings stirs the drink for the Terps as he counts a team-high 29 goals and 43 points to his credit, while linemate Owen Blye, who scored four goals against the Blue Jays earlier this season, counts 17 goals and 19 assists to his credit. As if dealing with the Maryland attack weren t enough, Hopkins will be challenged by arguably the top midfield unit in the nation. John Haus, the son for former JHU head coach John Haus ( ), ranks third on the team in scoring (13g, 16a) and is joined on the first unit by Drew Snider (17g, 7a) and Mike Chanenchuk (14g, 7a). Terp Defense Among Nation s Best: One constant in College Park when it comes to lacrosse is that Maryland plays great defense - and 2012 is no different. Entering this week s game Maryland is allowing just 7.9 goals per game and fewer than 30 shots per outing. The headliners on defense for head coach John Tillman are ACC co-defensive Player of the Year Jesse Bernhardt and sophomore goalie Niko Amato. Bernhardt has team-highs of 55 ground balls and 29 caused turnovers, while Amato sports a solid 7.51 goals against average and a.541 save percentage. Boland Returns: Senior attackman Chris Boland returned to the lineup against North Carolina after missing seven consecutive games with an injury he suffered 35 minutes into the season opener against Towson. Despite missing the second half against Towson and seven full games, he ranks third on the team in scoring with 16 goals and 13 assists for 29 points. His run of seven straight multi-point games to open his career is the longest by a Johns Hopkins player (freshmen only - not transfers) since all-time leading scorer Terry Riordan opened his career with 18 consecutive multi-point games from Palmer in Rare Company: Junior attackman Zach Palmer punched up three goals and three assists in last week s 19-9 win over Stony Brook in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to push his season totals to 26 goals and 26 assists for 52 points. 29 2012 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Notes Game-by-Game Recaps Game 1 Towson-6 February 17, 2012 #2 Johns Hopkins-12 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD - Second-ranked Johns Hopkins used a 9-0 run that bridged the second and fourth quarters and held visiting Towson scoreless for more than 31 minutes during that stretch as the Blue Jays eased past the Tigers, 12-6, at Homewood Field Friday evening. The win is the 150th in the career of Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala, who improves to overall and during his time at Hopkins. Towson held a one-goal lead three times in the opening 18:30, including a 3-2 advantage after Robby Zoppo scored on an ally dodge with 11:43 remaining in the second quarter. The Blue Jays needed just 15 seconds to answer Zoppo s strike as senior Chris Boland scored the second of his four goals off a crossfield pass from junior Zach Palmer in an unsettled situation off the ensuing faceoff and that ignited the 9-0 run for the Blue Jays. Junior Lee Coppersmith and Palmer both struck in the final six minutes of the second quarter to give the Blue Jays a 5-3 lead at the half and Boland added extra-man and even-strength tallies in the first six minutes of the third quarter to push the lead to 7-3. Coppersmith completed his two-goal showing with an unassisted goal less than a minute after Boland s goal to make it 8-3 midway through the third period. By this point, the Tigers drought had reached nearly 18 minutes. Sophomore Brandon Benn helped put the game out of reach with back-to-back goals. His first, off an assist from Palmer, made it 9-3 at the end of the third quarter and he added his second just over 90 seconds into the fourth period when he underhanded home a pass from freshman Wells Stanwick. Senior Marshall Burkhart closed the run nine seconds later when he grabbed a long rebound and blew a 12-yarder past Towson s Andrew Wascavage. The Tigers, who by this point hadn t scored since Zoppo s tally early in the second quarter, needed just nine seconds to score twice early in the final period. Sean Maguire got his hands free and beat Blue Jay goalie Pierce Bassett from seven yards out on a quick feed from Matt Hughes and Andrew Hodgson scored off the ensuing faceoff to make it An extra-man goal by Palmer, which completed his fourth career hat trick, closed the scoring with just under three minutes remaining for the Blue Jays, while Zoppo added his second goal of the game off an assist from Maguire with 33 seconds left to close the scoring. The Blue Jays starting attack of Palmer, Boland and Benn combined for nine goals and three assists in the win with Palmer punching up three goals and three assists to lead the way. Bassett faced just 18 shots and posted seven saves as the Blue Jay defense kept the Tigers away from the goal for long stretches. Game 2 Delaware-6 February 21, 2012 #3 Johns Hopkins-12 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The thirdranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team built a five-goal, third-quarter lead then held off a furious rally by 16th-ranked Delaware as the Blue Jays improved to 2-0 on the year with an 8-6 win over the Blue Hens at Homewood Field Tuesday evening. Hopkins also extended its home winning streak to eight games with the win and moved to 9-0 all-time against the Blue Hens. After batting to a 2-2 tie through the first 20 minutes, the Blue Jays slowly began to take control. The second of Brandon Benn s three goals with 9:34 remaining in the second quarter gave JHU a 3-2 lead and sophomore Rob Guida pushed the lead to 4-2 seven minutes later when he spun inside a defender and beat Delaware goalie Chris Herbert to the near post. The two-goal lead held until midway through the third quarter, when sophomore Greg Edmonds got free on the crease and slipped home his first goal of the season off a nifty feed from freshman Wells Stanwick, who spun away from a defender behind the goal and found Edmonds to pick up the assist. Benn completed the first hat trick of his career just over five minutes later when he scored from in tight also off a Stanwick assist and junior Lee Coppersmith added a transition goalie just under two minutes after Benn s strike to give JHU what seemed to be a comfortable 7-2 lead. The Blue Jays won the faceoff after Coppersmith s goal and junior John Ranagan unloaded on Herbert, but he was equal to the task and jump-started the Blue Hen transition, which ended with a Grant Kaleikau goal just 24 seconds after Coppersmith s goal. Delaware had gone more than 29 minutes without scoring before Kaleikau s goal, but needed just seven seconds after that to score again as Mark Yetter blew home his third goal of the season off a skip pass form Kaleikau off the ensuing faceoff and the Hens had quickly sliced into the lead and grabbed the momentum. JHU s 7-4 lead held until midway through the fourth quarter, when Delaware struck twice in less than 45 seconds to draw within a goal. Danny Keane s ninth goal of the year made it 7-5 with 6:27 remaining and Tom Holland got topside on his defender and beat JHU goalie Pierce Bassett from eight yards out while falling to the ground to make it 7-6. Delaware had two possessions in the final five minutes, but the Blue Jay defense, which has now allowed a total of just 12 goals in two games this season, held the Hens off the board and Ranagan added an insurance goal an extra-man tally with 31 seconds remaining to seal the victory. Benn led the Blue Jays with the three goals and one assist, while Stanwick tallied the first goal of his career and added the two assists as well. Guida (1g, 1a) was the only other Blue Jay with a multi-point game and Bassett posted six saves to pick up the win in goal. JHU held advantages in shots (35-23) and ground balls (30-27) and got a boost from junior Mike Poppleton, who returned to the lineup after missing the seasonopener vs. Towson and won 9-of-15 faceoffs with six ground balls. Game 3 Siena-5 February 25, 2012 #2 Johns Hopkins-9 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The third-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team scored three goals in a five-minute span early in the fourth quarter to extend a 6-5 lead over visiting Siena to four goals and the Blue Jays held the Saints scoreless for the final 19:30 in a 9-5 victory at wind-swept Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The win runs JHU s regular season winning streak to 10 games dating back to last season and the Blue Jays improve to 3-0 on the year. Hopkins had a chance to build on the 6-5 lead in the final seconds of the third quarter, but Siena goalie Tom Morr stoned Hopkins Zach Palmer from in tight to keep it a one-goal game entering the final 15 minutes. It took the Blue Jays just over two minutes of the fourth quarter to jump start their game-ending threegoal run as senior Marshall Burkhart forced a turnover in the defensive end and started a transition opportunity that ended with Palmer beating Morr from in tight off a nifty skip pass from freshman Wells Stanwick. It took the Blue Jays less than a minute 54 seconds to be exact to push the lead to 8-5 as sophomore Brandon Benn scooped up a loose ball in front of the cage off a Morr save and fired into and open net. Junior Lee Coppersmith added his second goal of the game and fifth of the season off an ally dodge with 8:05 remaining to close out the scoring and secure JHU s ninth consecutive home victory. A Conor Prunty goal for the Saints with 4:31 remaining in the third quarter drew Siena within one for the final time at 6-5, but Palmer s goal 2:08 into the final period ignited the final spree for the Blue Jays, who improved to 4-0 all-time against the Saints with the victory. Palmer paced the Blue Jays with two goals and two assists, while Stanwick (2g, 1a) and Coppersmith (2g) also enjoyed multi-point games for Hopkins, which also got 10 saves from junior Pierce Bassett. Game 4 #2 Johns Hopkins-10 March 2, 2012 #12 Princeton-8 Class of 1952 Stadium PRINCETON, NJ -- Second-ranked Johns Hopkins used a 4-1 run to open the fourth quarter to turn a 6-4 lead into a 10-5 advantage and then held off a late-game rally by 12th-ranked Princeton to knock off the Tigers, 10-8, at Sherrerd Field at Class of 1952 Stadium Friday evening. The win is JHU s fourth straight to open the season, 11th straight in the regular season and third straight against the Tigers at Princeton. The Blue Jays (4-0) led 6-4 entering the final period, but needed less than nine minutes to turn the two-goal lead into a five-goal advantage and the run was sparked by reserve attackman John Kaestner, who was making his first career start. Kaestner jump-started the spree with a nifty goal from an impossible angle as he wrapped a shot around the post and Princeton goalie Tyler Fiorito just over two minutes into the final period for his first career goal to make it 7-4. Princeton s Alex Capretta drew the Tigers to within 7-5 at the 10:04 mark as he stepped down and beat JHU s Pierce Bassett to the far post off a pass from just above the goal line from Mike Grossman, but the Tigers fate was sealed over the next four minutes as the Blue Jays scored on three straight possessions to go up Sophomore Brandon Benn got free in the high slot and quickly turned and fired one home off Fiorito s thigh 38 seconds after Capretta s goal and Kaestner netted his second of the night 90 seconds later when he came from the side of the goal, took a nice dump pass from John Ranagan and scored from in tight. Junior Lee Coppersmith added his sixth goal of the season on Hopkins next possession as junior Zach Palmer s skip pass from the goal line to Fiorito s left found Coppersmith alone and he blew one into the top corner. Princeton (2-1), as expected, rallied. The Tigers got one back just 38 seconds after Coppersmith s goal as Jeff Froccaro got free in the slot and went low to slip one past Bassett from seven yards out to make it Nearly four minutes, and one big save by Bassett, passed before Princeton would score again as Grossman got free after a long loose ball scramble and scored his only goal of the game with 2:16 remaining. Tom Schreiber worked free of Hopkins Tucker Durkin on a pick behind the goal and drove top side for his eighth goal of the year with just over a minute to play, but the Blue Jay defense held firm in the final 63 seconds to secure the win. An extra-man goal by Tucker Shanley opened the scoring for the Tigers early in the first quarter, but Hopkins struck for three goals over the next eight minutes to take a 3-1 lead that they would never relinquish. A cross-crease pass from Palmer found senior Mark Goodrich alone on the backdoor and he quick-sticked home his second goal of the year and Palmer got top side on his defender and rifled home a shot from six yards out that surprised Fiorito just over three minutes later. When sophomore Rob Guida spun inside his defender and whipped home his third goal of the season three minutes later the Blue Jays had the momentum and the two-goal lead. Froccaro made it a one-goal game with his first strike of the match with 15 seconds remaining in the second quarter, but that would be the final goal - and shot - for the Tigers in the first half. Hopkins maintained possession for virtually the entire second quarter and got goals in the final five minutes of the half from junior midfielders John Greeley and Ranagan to carry a 5-2 advantage into the half. The Blue Jays outshot the Tigers 9-0 in the quarter and 19-7 in the first half. Neither team scored in the first seven minutes of the second half, but Goodrich staked the Blue Jays to a 6-2 advantage when he snapped home a laser to the top corner after a quick move to the inside from eight yards out. Princeton drew within 6-4 at the end of the third on back-to-back goals by Sonnenfeldt and Grossman, but Kaestner s goal early in the fourth quarter ignited the decisive run and the Blue Jays pulled out of Princeton with their first 4-0 start since Goodrich and Kaestner led the Blue Jays with two goals each, while Palmer added the one goal and a game-high three assists. Bassett totaled nine saves in goal for the Blue Jays, who also won 11-of-21 faceoffs in the game. Froccaro was the only multi-goal scorer for Princeton as his two tallies led the way. Game 5 Manhattan-0 March 6, 2012 #2 Johns Hopkins-11 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD It took nearly 11 minutes for the second-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team to find the back of the net in Tuesday afternoon s game against Manhattan as sophomore Rob Guida finally broke through with an unassisted goal 11:35 into the game. As it turned out, that would be all the offense the Blue Jays would need as the defense limited the Jaspers to just 14 shots, eight of which were saved by a combination of four Johns Hopkins goalies in an 11-0 JHU win at Homewood Field Tuesday afternoon. The shutout is the first for Johns Hopkins since March 26, 1988, when the Blue Jays blanked Princeton, 9-0. Two key members of the Blue Jay defense on that day nearly 24 years ago were currently Blue Jay head coach Dave Pietramala and current associate head coach Bill Dwan. Guida s goal ignited a scoring flurry for the Blue Jays (5-0), who added four goals in the final two minutes of the quarter to take a 5-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes. Junior John Greeley sandwiched goals around a strike from John Kaestner in a 72-second span and Lee Coppersmith added an unassisted goal of his own with just 13 seconds remaining in the opening quarter to account for the five-goal spurt. The spree would stretch to six goals in less than three minutes as John Ranagan, who had assisted on Greeley s second goal, took a skip pass from Greeley and blew his third goal of the season just inside the far post. The lead swelled to 7-0 at the half when Guida added his second goal of the game late in the period. Junior Pierce Bassett, who played the first three quarters, posted five of his seven saves in the first half as the Jaspers generated 10 of their 14 shots before intermission. Twice he hugged the post to stop shots in tight and Hopkins blanked an opponent for a half for the first time since the first half of last season s game against Navy. The scoring in the second half was limited to four Blue Jay goals in the third quarter. Senior Mark Goodrich fired home his fourth goal of the season and third in the last two games less than four minutes into the period and Brandon Benn, Zach Palmer and Greeley all scored in a span of just under three minutes midway through the quarter to account for the final scoring. Substituting liberally by the middle of the second quarter, the Blue Jays worked all 44 healthy players into the rotation with the only drama over the last 15 minutes the test to see if Hopkins could preserve its shutout. Greeley led the way offensively with his second career hat trick and one assist for a four-point afternoon. The second-ranked Blue Jays improve to 6-0 with the victory, while UMBC slips to 2-3 with the loss. After the teams traded goals to open the game, the Blue Jays Rob Guida ignited a 9-1 run that bridged the first and fourth quarters to turn the early deadlock into a 10-2 Blue Jay advantage at the end of the third quarter. Guida s goal, which came with 5:27 remaining in the first quarter, was followed by the first of Benn s three goals on the day early in the second. The Retrievers had a golden opportunity to draw even when Hopkins was flagged for a two-minute non-releasable penalty with just under 11 minutes remaining in the second quarter and did slice the deficit to one on an extra-man goal by Scott Hopmann just 34 seconds into the man advantage, but the Blue Jays were able to kill off the remaining 86 seconds and stretched their one-goal lead to four by halftime. The four-goal lead held for more than 11 minutes in the third quarter, but any hopes of a UMBC comeback were dashed late in the period as the Blue Jays scored four times in a span of just 81 seconds to turn the 6-2 lead into the 10-2 bulge. Junior John Kaestner s fourth goal in the last three games jump-started the spree, which also included a pair of Benn goals wrapped around Palmer s third of the game. In all, Palmer had a hand in six of JHU s nine goals during the 9-1 run as he scored the two goals and added four of his career-high-tying five assists during the spree. The teams alternated goals in the fourth quarter to account for the 12-5 final. The Retrievers Scott Jones scored all three UMBC goals in the final period with Mark Goodrich and Ranagan adding goals in the final 15 minutes for the Blue Jays. Palmer s eight points are a career high and led the way for Hopkins, which also got a career-high five points from Benn. The duo connected for four goals together as Benn assisted on two of Palmer s three goals, while Palmer got the helper on two of Benn s career-high-tying three goals. While Palmer and Benn grabbed the headlines, the Blue Jay defense turned in another workmanlike effort as UMBC s only two goals in the first thee quarters were extra-man tallies. When Jones scored the first of his three goals just 34 seconds into the fourth quarter it ended a streak of 116:37 that Hopkins had gone without allowing an even-strength goal. Game 7 #6 Syracuse-7 March 17, 2012 #2 Johns Hopkins-11 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The highly anticipated 50th all-time meeting between men s lacrosse heavyweights Johns Hopkins and Syracuse was colored Columbia Blue on Saturday as the second-ranked Blue Jays used a 4-0 run to turn a 6-4 lead into a 10-4 advantage that the Orange never seriously threatened before falling 11-7 before 5,970 sun-drenched fans at Homewood Field. The win runs Hopkins home winning streak to 11, its regular season winning streak to 14 and its record this season to 7-0. Syracuse had its five-game winning streak against the Blue Jays snapped and slips to 3-2. After sprinting out to leads to 4-1, 5-2 and 6-3, the Blue Jays led just 6-4 late in the second quarter after the third of Derek Maltz s three first-half goals with 3:29 remaining before the half. Playing for the first time in more than two weeks, freshman Wells Stanwick pushed the lead back to three as he converted from the slot off a nifty feed from sophomore Brandon Benn with 2:42 remaining in the second quarter. The goal ignited the game-turning run, which saw the Blue Jays outscore Syracuse 4-0 over a 20-minute span that bridged the second and fourth quarters. After Stanwick s tally late in the second period, it was Benn and the Blue Jays first midfield doing the damage as Benn scored all three Hopkins goals in the third period with each assisted by a different member of Hopkins top unit. It didn t take long, nine seconds to be exact, for the Blue Jays to strike in the third quarter as junior John Ranagan scooped up the loose ball on the opening faceoff of the second half and found Benn on the point. Benn had time and room to step in and blow a shot past a defenseless Matt Lerman to give the Blue Jays their first four-goal lead of the game. Benn added his third of the game just under four minutes later off an assist from John Greeley and completed his three-goal third quarter showing with his career-high fourth goal of the game with 2:30 left in the period to make it By then the Orange had gone more than 15 minutes without scoring and the Blue Jays had the six-goal lead. The drought ended for Syracuse less than two minutes into the fourth quarter when Tom Palasek slipped inside a defender and got to the crease before beating Pierce Bassett in close. Neither team scored over the next eight minutes as the Blue Jays nursed the 10-5 lead. A Tim Desko goal with 4:49 remaining gave the Orange life, but Hopkins eventually got an empty-net goal from junior Zach Palmer with 62 seconds remaining before Henry Schoonmaker fired home the game s final goal with 15 seconds left to account for the 11-7 final score. Like they did in the third quarter, the Blue Jays scored early in the first period as junior Mike Poppleton won the opening faceoff and the Blue Jays worked a nifty play of deception between Greeley and Ranagan that freed Greeley in the middle of the field and he found the top shelf to stake JHU to a quick 1-0 lead just 35 seconds into the game. Maltz and Greeley traded goals in a two-minute span midway through the quarter before Benn and Ranagan added tallies in the final 3:14 to give the Blue Jays a 4-1 lead after the opening 15 minutes. Three times the Orange sliced the deficit to two in the second quarter, only to have the Blue Jays answer quickly each time. A Maltz tally in the first two minutes was matched by Ranagan, while a Bobby Eilers strike at the 7:54 mark was answered by Guida with 5:40 remaining in the first half. The five goals and four assists the trio combined for was four goals and two assists better than the Syracuse first midfield managed. Stanwick returned to the lineup and totaled one goal and one assist and Poppleton won 12-of-18 faceoffs for the Blue Jays. Bassett registered nine saves, including several crucial stops with the Blue Jays playing short. He came up with a big first-quarter save with the Blue Jays playing two men down and added a point-blank save on a Maltz shot early in the third quarter that would have cut an 8-4 deficit to 8-5. Instead, Benn added the second of his three straight goals less than a minute later and Syracuse was never closer than four over the final 25 minutes. Game 8 #2 Johns Hopkins-11 (OT) March 24, 2012 #1 Virginia-10 Klockner Stadium CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA - Few games that receive as much hype as Saturday s men s lacrosse matchup between top-ranked Virginia and second-ranked Johns Hopkins actually live up to the advance billing. After regulation and all but five seconds of a full overtime, it s safe to say that the Blue Jays win over the Cavaliers did - and then some. Johns Hopkins trailed by as many as three in the first half, led by two early in the fourth quarter and trailed by a goal with just over a minute to play in regulation - while playing a man down. That s when things really got crazy. Virginia turned the ball over with 11 seconds remaining on its extra-man chance and the Blue Jays needed one timeout and 27 seconds before junior Lee Coppersmith slipped inside a pair of defenders and scored from the high slot with 44 seconds left in regulation. Failed extra-man chances and turnovers by both teams over the remainder of regulation and the first three plus minutes overtime eventually led to Hopkins isolating junior John Ranagan at the top of the box as the first overtime ticket away. After getting a quick step on his defender, he beat Virginia goalie Rob Fortunato low for his eighth goal of the season and the Blue Jays had exorcised yet another demon they had carried - and heard about - for far too long. Ranagan s goal lifted the Blue Jays to their first win in Charlottesville against the Cavaliers since Earlier wins at Princeton and last week against Syracuse had stopped losing streaks against the Tigers and Orange that had stretched to three and five games, respectively. Winning at Virginia - that was an entirely different monkey on the back; or gorilla as JHU head coach Dave Pietramalahas referred to it a week earlier. That the game went to overtime should surprise few. During the losing streak in Charlottesville the Blue Jays had alternated blowout losses in 2002, 2006 and 2010 with overtime defeats in 2004 and Eventually one of these had to break Hopkins way. After Virginia built an early 4-1 lead on lengthy possessions and back-to-back goals by Chris Bocklet that bridged the first and second quarters, the Blue Jays slowly began to work their way back into the game. The Blue Jays grabbed the momentum midway through the second quarter as they scored consecutive goals in a three-minute span midway through the period. Sophomore Brandon Benn one-timed home a pass to the crease from junior Zach Palmer to make it 4-2 and freshman Wells Stanwick made it a one-goal game with 4:34 remaining in the first half as he dodged hard to the crease from behind the goal and beat Fortunato from in tight. A Steele Stanwick goal into an empty net gave the Cavs a 5-3 lead at halftime and the teams traded goals in a 35-second span early in the period to make it 6-4. Nearly 15 minutes would pass before Virginia would score again. During that time the Blue Jays scored four times to build their two-goal lead. Benn completed his third consecutive hat trick 29 seconds after a Ryan Tucker goal to ignite the fourgoal run, which included the first career goal by sophomore Jack Reilly and back-to-back extra-man goals by Rob Guida in a span of just over five minutes bridging the third and fourth quarters. Virginia, as it does so often, struck back quickly with two goals in a 50-second span shortly after Guida s strike made it 8-6. A Rob Emery extra-man goal drew the Cavs within one at 8-7 and Matt White s highlight-reel behind the back shot from the crease tied it less than a minute later. If White s shot was destined for play of the game, it was quickly bumped by Zach Palmer s goal 52 seconds later. Working from behind the goal, Palmer drove up the side and scored on a one-handed wraparound shot from goal line extended that gave the Blue Jays a 9-8 lead with more than 10 minutes remaining. The one-goal lead didn t figure to hold - and it didn t. Steele Stanwick scored from in tight after defenseman Tucker Durkin lost his footing to knot the game with just over four minutes remaining and Tucker fired home his second of the game with 2:44 on the clock to give Virginia a 10-9 lead. The one-goal lead held for exactly two minutes, when Coppersmith fired home the game-tying goal that forced overtime and led to Ranagan s game-winner that lifted the final proverbial monkey off the Blue Jays back. The Tar Heels led by four at the half, withstood a rally the Blue Jays in the third quarter and then pulled away in the fourth to improve to 8-3 on the year. Hopkins suffered its first loss of the season and slips to 8-1. Four days after dropping their first game of the season, the Blue Jays got goals from 11 different players and 14 different players registered at least one point in JHU s 12th consecutive home victory. Save for a five-minute span midway through the third quarter when the Great Danes scored four of their six goals, the Blue Jays dominated possession and used three decisive scoring runs to fuel their 10th win in the 11-game series history. The Blue Jays led 3-1 early in the second quarter before junior John Ranagan jump-started a 7-0 run with the second of his career-high four goals. Three of those goals tallies by Mark Goodrich, Zach Palmer and Chris Boland came before halftime as the Blue Jays built the 7-1 lead at intermission. Like they had in the first two quarters, the Blue Jays struck for a goal less than a minute into the third period as Palmer skipped a pass over the defense to junior Lee Coppersmith, who wasted little time blowing one just inside the crossbar past a defenseless Max Huber. An extra-man goal by Rob Guida and the second of Boland s three goals pushed the lead to 10-1 before the Danes made their run. A Ty Thompson goal for Albany with 7:07 remaining in the third quarter snapped a scoreless stretch that had reached more than 24 minutes. Boland answered with his third goal of the game 41 seconds later, but Miles Thompson scored five seconds later to ignite a three-goal run for the Great Danes that included another strike by Miles Thompson and a Joe Resetarits goal that trimmed what was once a nine-goal deficit to six at 11-5 late in the third quarter. The win improves the Terps record to 7-3, while the Blue Jays slip to 9-2 and had their 12-game home winning streak snapped. Hopkins seemed to be in control of the game for the first 31 minutes, but could never really pull away. A Chris Boland goal off an assist from junior John Greeley just 43 seconds into the third quarter gave the Blue Jays a 6-3 lead, their second, three-goal goal lead of the game, but that would be the final tally for Hopkins as Blye sparked Maryland s comeback. Blye opened the game-ending spree five minutes after Boland s goal when Mike Chanenchuk found him alone on the backdoor and he faked Hopkins goalie Pierce Bassett high and low several times before slipping a low shot past him to make it 6-4. He cut the two-goal deficit to one just under three minutes later when he got his defender hung up in the net behind the cage and scored from a tough angle to make it 6-5. When Michael Shakespeare had time and room to step down from 10 yards and fire one past Bassett with 17 seconds remaining in the third quarter, the Terps had come back to tie and grabbed all the momentum. The win evens Navy s record at 6-6, while the Blue Jays slip to 9-3. Durkin s empty-net goal after a failed JHU doubleteam midway through the first quarter gave Navy a lead it would never relinquish and Reynolds fired one home just over two minutes later off a nice cut to the goal make it 2-0. When Davis scored with 20 seconds remaining in the first period the Mids had crafted their three-goal lead. Hopkins finally got on the board with 4:29 remaining in the first half when Brandon Benn found Zach Palmer alone on the doorstep and he beat Wickham from in tight to make it 3-1. Hopkins had a golden opportunity to make it a onegoal game early in the third quarter as Palmer zipped a cross-field pass to Benn on the backdoor, but Wickham stoned him and Navy went the other way; just over a minute later Sam Jones scored the first of his three second-half goals to ignite a 5-0 Navy run that pushed the lead out to 8-1 midway through the final period. Game 13 #10 Johns Hopkins-19 April 28, 2012 #1 Loyola-9 (OT) Ridley Athletic Complex BALTIMORE, MD - Sophomore Rob Guida provided the emotional spark the Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team needed when he opened the scoring with an unassisted goal less than three minutes into Saturday s showdown at top-ranked Loyola. Guida did himself one better with 2.3 seconds remaining in overtime when he quick-sticked home a pass to the crease from junior Zach Palmer to lift the 10th-ranked Blue Jays to a 10-9 win before a capacity crowd of 6,000 at Loyola s Ridley Athletic Complex. In a game that saw the Blue Jays lead 9-5 with less than 13 minutes remaining in regulation, Guida netted his game-winner after Loyola hit the post with its second shot in overtime and the Blue Jays failed on an extra-man opportunity. With the clock winding down, Hopkins midfielder John Ranagan worked to an ally dodge, but was trail-checked nicely and the ball flew out to Palmer along the goal line. There, he threaded a pass to the crease, where Guida caught it for the briefest time and slipped a quick shot between the legs of Loyola goalie Jack Runkel. The goal completed Guida s first career hat trick and improved Hopkins record to 19-9 all-time in overtime games under head coach Dave Pietramala. A late goal in overtime didn t look like it would be necessary for the Blue Jays after Guida s extra-man goal early in the fourth quarter gave JHU a 9-5 lead. To that point, the `Hounds hadn t been closer than three since the first quarter and the Blue Jays appeared to be in control. It look less than two minutes for Davis Butts to answer Guida s tally and less than a minute after that before a Sean O Sullivan strike made it 9-7 with more than 11 minutes remaining. The 9-7 lead held for the Blue Jays (10-3) for more than eight minutes as Runkel and his counterpart, JHU goalie Pierce Bassett, traded saves. Still, the Greyhounds made it a one-goal game with 54 seconds remaining when Justin Ward found Pat Laconi alone in the high slot and Laconi picked the near post for his first goal of the season. Loyola (12-1), which had its 12-game winning streak snapped, won the ensuing faceoff and worked the ball to Ward behind the goal. Hopkins senior Gavin Crisafulli bodied up with Ward along the goal line and appeared to be in solid position, but Ward worked topside just slightly and rifled home the equalizer to force the extra period. Loyola maintained possession for more than 90 seconds in overtime and Eric Lusby rang the far post with the `Hounds second shot, but Guida came up with the ensuing ground ball and drew a flag for a hold while trying to clear. Hopkins maintained possession after the penalty expired and Palmer threaded his pass to a tightly-marked Guida a short time later to seal Hopkins 13th straight win over the Greyhounds. After back-to-back losses the Blue Jays were looking for something positive early in the game and Guida, Mark Goodrich and Lee Coppersmith provided just that with first quarter goals that gave JHU a 3-0 lead at the end of the opening quarter. It marked the 15th time Hopkins has held an opponent scoreless in a quarter this season and the first time all year that Loyola failed to score in the opening quarter of a game. The Blue Jays pushed the lead to 5-0 when Coppersmith and Wells Stanwick scored in the opening 2:03 of the second period, but Loyola got goals by Butts, Lusby and Chris Layne in the final 11:15 of the period with only a Palmer strike in that time for JHU to account for a 6-3 score at the half. The teams traded third-quarter goals to make it 8-5 entering the final period and Gudia s extra-man goal 47 seconds into the fourth quarter gave JHU the 9-5 lead. Butts ignited Loyola s 4-0 run a short time later when he scored on an ally dodge and Ward capped the spree in the final seconds with his only goal of the game. That set the stage for the overtime period, which went nearly the full four minutes before Palmer and Guida put an end to the dramatics and lifted Hopkins to its 47th all-time win in the 50-game series with Loyola. Guida, who had scored previously scored a careerhigh two goals in a game six times in his career, led the Blue Jays with his three goals, while Palmer added two goals and two assists. Game 14 Army-6 May 5, 2012 #10 Johns Hopkins-13 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD Junior attackman Zach Palmer scored a careerhigh five goals and added two assists and the 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team scored nine of the game s final 11 goals as the Blue Jays knocked off visiting Army, 13-6, at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. Johns Hopkins finishes the regular season with a record of 11-3 and seems assured of a record 41st consecutive berth in the NCAA Tournament. Army ends its season at 7-8. After Army s Alex Van Krevel knotted the game at 4-4 early in the third quarter, Palmer and the Blue Jay offense took over. Palmer answered Van Krevel s strike just 10 seconds later as he scored off a nice skip pass from senior Chris Boland to give Hopkins a lead that it would never relinquish. Sophomore Greg Edmonds dipped inside his defender at the top of the box and scored on the run 61 seconds later and Brandon Benn s rebound goal 90 seconds after that gave the Blue Jays their second three-goal lead of the game. Conor Hayes goal just under a minute after Benn s tally made it 7-5, but Benn s second goal of the game, this one off an assist from John Ranagan, and another Palmer goal made it 9-5 before Devin Lynch closed the third quarter scoring with an unassisted tally of his own to make it 9-6 entering the final period. Palmer s goal that made it 9-5 was the latest of his highlight-reel goals this season as he went behind-the-back from in tight with a pair of defenders on him to stake JHU to its first four-goal lead of the game. The Blue Jays, who dominated at the X throughout the game, won all five faceoffs in the fourth quarter and used that possession advantage to outscore the Black Knights 4-0 in the final 15 minutes; Palmer had a hand in all four goals. After coming up with a loose ball in a riding situation, he went in alone on goalie Zach Palmieri and beat him low before capping another transition opportunity with his career-best fifth goal of the game off another assist from Boland to make it Boland capped the victory with back-to-back goals in a two- minute span midway through the quarter both off assists from Palmer to account for the final scoring. Army was held scoreless in the final 15 minutes to mark the 16th time this season the Blue Jay defense has held the opposition scoreless in a quarter. A tightly contested first half saw the Blue Jays jump out to a 4-1 lead as Ranagan, Palmer, Boland a freshman Wells Stanwick all scored in the first 18 minutes of the game, but Army hung in and pulled within a goal by intermission as senior Garrett Thul s 39th goal of the season midway through the second quarter was followed by Van Krevel s first of the game as he blew a 14-yarder from the top of the box past Hopkins goalie Pierce Bassett to account for a 4-3 score at the half. By the time Van Krevel added his second goal just under four minutes into the third quarter, the Blue Jays had gone more than 16 minutes without scoring and the Black Knights had eaten away all of JHU s threegoal lead. The tie last just 10 seconds before Palmer s transition goal opened the floodgates as the Blue Jays scored on nine of their 21 second-half shots to secure their 18th consecutive victory over Army. Palmer led the Blue Jays with his five goals and two assists as he scored on five of his seven shots in the game and had a hand in six of the nine goals Johns Hopkins scored after halftime. Boland added his 11th career hat trick as he totaled three goals and two assists, while Ranagan (1g, 2a) and Benn (2g) also added multi-point games for the Blue Jays. Game 15 NCAA First Round Stony Brook-9 May 13, 2012 #7 Johns Hopkins-19 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The Johns Hopkins starting attack unit of Chris Boland, Zach Palmer and Brandon Benn combined for 11 goals and seven assists and junior Mike Poppleton won 20-of-26 faceoffs to lead the Blue Jays to a 19-9 victory against visiting Stony Brook in the first round of the 2012 NCAA Division I Men s Lacrosse Tournament at Homewood Field Sunday afternoon. The win propels the Blue Jays into the NCAA Quarterfinals for the 39th time in 41 trips to the NCAA Tournament. Hopkins will take on the winner of the Maryland-Lehigh game, which will be played later tonight at Lehigh. The victory also improves Hopkins record to 44-4 overall and 11-0 under head coach Dave Pietramala at home in the NCAA Tournament. The Blue Jays (12-3) also reach the 12-win mark for the seventh time under Pietramala. The Blue Jays jumped on the America East Champion Seawolves early as they led 3-0 before the game was four minutes old and 7-1 at the end of the first quarter. If not for some big saves from Stony Brook s Sean Brady in the opening 15 minutes, the lead may have been bigger. Possession was decidedly in the Blue Jays favor in the first quarter as Poppleton won all eight of the faceoffs he took in the opening period and JHU was 9-for-9 overall. Boland needed less than 14 minutes to notch his 12th career hat trick as he scored the first, fourth and seventh goals of the game for the Blue Jays, who answered Mike Rooney s extra man goal midway through the period with four goals in a span of just under two minutes to push a 3-1 lead to 7-1. An extraman goal by Boland ignited the quarter-ending spree, while junior John Ranagan and Benn added consecutive tallies before Boland closed his first quarter hat trick off a skip pass from senior Marshall Burkhart right off the faceoff after Benn s strike. The goal was one of two JHU scored less than 10 seconds after a faceoff in the opening period. The Seawolves (7-10) settled down in the second quarter and were outscored just 5-4 to make it a 12-5 game at the half. A pair of Russ Bonanno goals in the first 11 minutes of the period led the way and Stony Brook had the deficit at four once and five on two other occasions in the quarter, but back-to-back goals by Palmer in a 75-second span late in the period gave the Blue Jays the 12-5 lead. Boland tied his own school record for most points in a first round NCAA Tournament game with seven as he added four assist to his three-goal showing. Benn tied Boland s record for most goals by a JHU player in the first round with five on the day. Brady posted nine saves in just under 49 minutes of action, but the Seawolves never scored more than two consecutive goals in the game and couldn t dig out of the six-goal deficit at the end of the first quarter.
