The Voice of the Minutemen Bob Behler and former UMass All-American Norm Smith calls the action. Live streaming audio and Gametracker will be available on UMassAthletics.com. The 2006 National Finalist Minutemen picked up an 11-4 victory over Sacred Heart on Tuesday afternoon at Garber Field to move to 2-4 this season. In the win, senior Brett Garber tied his career-high with four goals and sophomore Tim Balise has his second hat trick in three games. UMass defense shutdown the Pioneers, blanking them in the second half as the Minutemen held them scoreless for the final 30:14 of the game. The last time UMass shutout an opponent in a half was also against Sacred Heart in The defense headed by Tewaaraton Trophy candidate goalie Doc Schneider (12 saves) was strong all game. Junior defensemen Brian Danvers, Sean Krygier and David Von Voigt along with redshirt freshman Jordan Hendry combined for 10 groundballs and seven turnovers in holding SHU to four goals. Loyola is 3-2 this season (2-0 in the ECAC) and riding a three-game winning streak. The Greyhounds picked up one of the biggest wins in college lacrosse this season knocking off then-no. 1 Duke back on March 10 in the First 4 Tournament held in San Diego. They began their win streak with a 10-9 ECAC-conference win over Penn State on March 3. They won their last game, 12-6 versus conference foe St. John s, last Saturday. The Red Storm are coached for former UMass assistant Jason Miller. CLOSE CALLS UMass has played four games decided by one or two goals this season, losing to Hofstra (8-6), Yale (7-6) and No. 2 Albany (10-9 in OT). The Minutemen beat Harvard (11-10). At Hofstra, UMass found themselves tied at 6-6 with less than five minutes remaining in the game, but lost by a pair, 8-6. Senior Brett Garber tied his career high with four goals against Sacred Heart on Tuesday. It was the third time in his career he scored four in a game. At Harvard on March 10, the Minutemen were able to eek out their first win of the season by a goal, On March 13 at Albany, UMass trailed 7-0 near halftime but rallied back to tie the game at 9-9, only to lose in overtime, 10-9 to the second-ranked Great Danes. It marked the fourth year in a row Albany beat UMass in a one-goal game. Of Loyola s five games, four have been decided by one or two goals. They lost their two of the season, 9-7 at No. 11 Notre Dame and 9-8 to Towson on Feb. 26. They rebounded to win one-goal games at Penn State (10-9) and the upset of top-ranked Duke (8-7). In the Duke game, they led throughout but the Blue Devils took a late lead at 7-6 only to have Loyola notch the win on a Greg Leonard goal with 38 seconds left in regulation. DEFENSE STANDS TALL UMass defense has been stellar early on this season. The Minutemen have a strong 7.66 goals against average which ranks 16th in the nation. Goalie Doc Schneider has 12 saves in four different games and is currently 14th in save percentage with a 58.6 mark. The defense has received great efforts from senior captain Dan Whipple, who leads the team with 20 groundballs in addition to seven caused turnovers. A trio of juniors have been stout on the close defense with Brian Danvers, Sean Krygier and David Von Voigt. Danvers leads the team in caused turnovers with 10 along with nine groundballs. Krygier has 11 GBs and four CTs while Von Voigt has eight groundballs and nine caused turnovers. Joining them with added playing time has been redshirt freshman Jordan Hendry. THE SERIES WITH LOYOLA UMass ended a nine-game losing streak against Loyola last season with a 14-9 win at Garber Field on March 25. Prior to that, Loyola had won all nine meetings including seven in Baltimore. With Loyola joining the ECAC in 2005, the teams will be playing for the third year in a row. Loyola won the last year in Baltimore, 6-5, on March 26, Four unanswered goals bridging the second and third quarters proved to be the difference as No. 11 UMass was upset by Loyola, 6-5, on Geppi- Aikens Field. The Loyola defense was the story in the game, led by goalkeeper Michael Fretwell, who made 16 saves on the afternoon, and defenseman Dan Gross shutdown UMass' Sean Morris, holding him to just a goal and an assist in the game limiting his possessions all game. UMass rallied back to tie the game at 5-5 early in the fourth quarter but Loyola Shane Koppens scored his third of the game with 3:59 for the game-winner. The Minutemen had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds as Gene Tundo's shot was stopped by Michael Fretwell for his 16th save of the game, securing Loyola's ninth consecutive win over UMass without a defeat. Loyola has won the first nine contests, dating all the way back to Prior to last season, Loyola had come to Amherst just twice, most recently in 1999 when the then-no. 1 Greyhounds beat UMass, 9-5. In 2000 UMass Alex Racciopi scored a career-high three goals, but it was not enough the No. 3 Greyhounds defeated the Minutemen, 21-10, in Baltimore on April 15, LAST SEASON: MARCH 25, 2006, UMASS 14, LOYOLA 9 A well-balanced effort of offense and defense lifted No. 10 UMass to 14-9 win over No. 19 Loyola in ECAC Lacrosse action at Garber Field. The win was UMass first-ever against the Greyhounds having lost the first nine meetings. Freshman goalie Doc Schneider made a career-high 19 saves. Five Minutemen scored two goals: Sean Morris, Pat Larmon, Brian Jacovina, Jim Connolly and Andrew Recchione. UMass broke open a 4-4 early in the third quarter with five consecutive goals including the first four in a span of just 1:43, to take a 9-4 lead with 5:02 left in the third quarter. Loyola would never get closer than three goals the rest of the way. The Minutemen have two wins this season with 11 goals, beating Harvard (11-10) and Sacred Heart (11-4). The streak goes back over the last five years -- meaning this year s senior class has never lost when scoring 11 or more goals. UMass last loss when they had more than 11 came in the 2002 NCAA Quarterfinals, a

3 loss at Johns Hopkins UMASS LACROSSE NOTES 2006 NATIONAL FINALISTS UMass is also 2-0 this season when scoring 10 goals this season and 24-0 over the past three years when reaching double-figures. The last loss when scoring 10 goals came on May 1, 2004, a loss at Syracuse. BIG WINNERS OVER LAST SEVEN YEARS With the 13-5 record last season, UMass is now over the last seven seasons for a 72.0 win percentage, which is tied for the fifth-best mark of any school in the country behind Johns Hopkins, which has won 82.6 percent of its games with a record. Georgetown is second at 75.5 (71-23). Virginia (73.0, 73-27) and Maryland (72.8, 75-28) are just ahead of UMass and Syracuse, which is also for a 72.0 win percentage. SCHNEIDER ON TEWAARATON WATCH LIST UMass sophomore goalie Doc Schneider has been named to the 2007 Tewaaraton Preseason Watch List, awarded college lacrosse's top player. The Long Island native helped lead the Minutemen to the NCAA Championship game in 2006 and was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team. He posted a 8.13 goals against average and 13-5 record as a freshman. Last season, attackman Sean Morris was the national runner-up for the Tewaaraton Trophy as the sport's best college player. Jack Reid was also on the preseason watch list. The Tewaaraton Award Foundation announces the Spring 2007 Men's Preseason Watch List. These players are considered early season indicators of who to watch as the 2007 lacrosse season begins. This list will be voted upon by coaches and narrowed as the season progresses, ultimately reaching a final list of five players who constitute the award's finalists SEASON OF HISTORY The Minutemen played in the NCAA Championship game for the first time in school history in UMass also reached the Semifinals after 10 unsuccessful tries in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The Minutemen had been to the most tournaments (17) of any school without a berth to lacrosse s final four. The Minutemen have been to the eighth-most NCAA Tournaments. UMass was the third team from New England to make the NCAA Semifinals. Yale (1990) and Brown (1994) are the only others. The Minutemen are the only one of the three to make the championship game. UMass posted a 13-5 record playing for USILA National Coach of the Year Greg Cannella. They were ranked No. 10 in both the USILA Coaches Poll and Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. UMass captured its 21st New England Championship in 2006 while finishing second in the ECAC with a 5-2 record. FOUR MINUTEMEN NAMED PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS UMass has four players on Inside Lacrosse/Face-Off Magazine's Preseason All-American team. Senior midfielder Brian Jacovina has been named to the preseason third team. Sophomore attacker Jim Connolly, sophomore goalie Doc Schneider and senior defensive midfielder Dan Whipple have been named honorable mention All-Americans. GORILLAS AT HOME Since the 1960s, UMass has been known as the Garber Gorilla s in honor of head coach Dick Garber and his first big time recruit from New York, Kevin O Connor ( ). UMass has won 20 of the last 23 games at home after the loss to Albany on March 14. UMass went 7-1 at home last season. They were riding a 13-game home winning streak spanning three seasons to the last home loss, also to Albany on March 16, Two years ago, UMass posted a perfect 8-0 record at home tying its record for best home record without a loss at 8-0, which was set in It was the first time since 1992 UMass went undefeated at home, as they went 6-0 that season. Since the start of the 2001 season, UMass is 44-8 at Garber Field, winning 85 percent of the games at the friendly confines. UMASS-SYRACUSE GAME TO AIR ON ESPNU The April 28 men's lacrosse game between UMass and Syracuse will be televised nationally on ESPNU. The game has been moved to a 3 p.m., start to allow for a live national telecast from Garber Field. As of now, it is the only schedule TV appearance for the 2006 National Finalists as they head into the season. WRNX TO AIR SEVEN GAMES THIS SPRING Seven UMass men's lacrosse games will be aired live on WRNX FM in Western Massachusetts. The games will be part of the UMass Sports Network with the "Voice of the Minutemen" Bob Behler calling the action with former All-American Norm Smith. The final seven Saturday games will air live starting with the March 24 game at Loyola. Every regular-season game will be available online at UMassAthletics.com. 4 MORRIS, REID TEWAARATON NOMINEES Along with attacker Sean Morris, defenseman Jack Reid was among the 25 national final nominees for the Tewaaraton Trophy which is awarded to the top player in the sport. Morris was one of five finalists for the award last season while Reid was also a final nominee. UMASS SWEEPS NEW ENGLAND AWARDS The 2006 New England champion UMass team swept the major awards for the 2006 season of the New England Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Senior attacker Sean Morris was named the Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Freshman goalie Doc Schneider (Massapequa, N.Y.) was named the Rookie of the Year and Greg Cannella was named the Coach of the Year. Joining Morris in the First Team were junior midfielders Brett Garber and Brian Jacovina along with senior long-stick Jake Deane and senior defenseman Jack Reid. Schneider was named to the second team as well. Cannella was named the New England Coach of the Year for the fourth time, also earning it in 2001, 2002 and Reid has been honored for the third year in a row. It marked Morris and Jacovina's second All-New England honors. MORRIS, REID HONORED BY ECAC In a vote by the league coaches, Sean Morris was named ECAC Lacrosse Offensive Player of the Year for the second year in a row. Jack Reid was tabbed the 2006 ECAC Defensive Player of the Year, while Penn State's Drew Adams has earned both the Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Year honors. First year head coach Charley Toomey of Loyola was selected as the 2006 ECAC Coach of the Year. Morris is the first back-to-back ECAC Offensive Player of the Year since Steve Dusseau of Georgetown in Reid is the first UMass player to be named the conference's Defensive Player of the Year. This year marks the first time since 2002 that the same school had the Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year when Georgetown did. COMEBACK KIDS UMass has pulled off some amazing comebacks this season, most notably the rally from a 10-5 deficit against Hofstra in the NCAA Quarterfinal, scoring five goals in the final 8:03 to send the game to overtime, where they won to go to the Semifinals. The high school All-American has posted a 60.1 save percentage in his first season of college ball. That mark ranks seventh in the nation behind Manhattan s John Geagan at Maryland s Harry Alford is fourth at Schneider is second in the nation in saves with 188 this season. He also ranks third in per game at 11.8 per contest behind Wagner s Chris Sochacki, who makes 16.6 per game. He has made 13 or more saves in seven of 16 games this season. The 188 saves stands as tied for the ninth-best single season mark in UMass history with John Kasselakis (1997). Schneider was named the ECAC Rookie of the Week on April 10 after his 15- save performance at St. John s on April 8. He allowed a season-low five goals against the Red Storm as well, a mark which he equaled later vs. Rutgers. He posted a season-best 19 saves in the win over Loyola on March 25, giving UMass its first-ever win over the Greyhounds in 10 meetings. He made 11 saves in the first half of that win. He had 17 saves in the win over Harvard on March 11 after 14 saves in each of the first two games this season. He also made 14 in the loss to Albany, of which eight came in the first quarter, as Albany outshot UMass, Most Wins 5 Years He is allowing 7.78 goals per game. Schneider has allowed more than nine goals in a game, just twice, when he gave up 11 to Yale on March 4 and at Syracuse on April 29. He has given up just 115 total goals holding opponents to eight or less on 10 occasions including nine of the last 11 games. Schneider allowed a career-low five goals against Rutgers on May 6, when he made seven saves. CANNELLA WINS 100TH GAME UMass head coach Greg Cannella picked up his 100th career win in the 12-7 victory over Harvard and stands at overall in his 12th season at his alma mater. Cannella is now eighth among active Division I coaches in career winning percentage at He is also one of 19 Division I coaches with 100 career wins. Cannella was honored by his seniors prior to the regular-season home finale vs. Rutgers on May 6 with a plaque to commemorate his 100th win. If you include coaches who have only coached in Division I, Cannella would rank third behind Maryland s Dave Cottle and Virginia s Dom Starsia among those with 100 wins. Syracuse s coach John Desko will move to the top of the list once he wins 100 career games. Desko has a career for a 76.8 win percentage. Cannella is the second-winningest coach in UMass history behind the legendary Hall of Famer Dick Garber, who compiled a record from THAT S WHAT YOU CALL DEFENSE UMass defense has been solid with two sophomores starting on close defense this season joining All-American Jack Reid. Sean Krygier (Madison, Conn.) and David Von Voigt (Wading River, N.Y.) have stepped in for the graduated Matt Garcia and Aaron Paskalis and have kept UMass defense as one of the nation s best giving up just 8.16 goals per game. Sophomore Brian Danvers (Syosset, N.Y.) has started five of the last six in place of an injured Von Voigt and has not missed a beat. Von Voigt returned to action against Hofstra in the NCAA Quarterfinals and played great defense. A Tewaaraton Trophy nominee, Reid has continued his great play this season guarding some of the nation s top offensive weapons. Reid has 65 groundballs including a season-best seven against Fairfield (4/25) and Albany (3/14). He also had six at Penn State. He leads UMass in caused turnovers with 33. Reid did not allow his man to score a goal on him over three games from April He has allowed the man he has guarded to score just four goals over nine games from March 25-May 13. He did not allow a goal in the Hobart game on April 15 nor did he allow Georgetown s top-scorer Brendan Cannon to score against him in the April 22 game. In the Georgetown game, he forced five turnovers and grabbed four groundballs. Against Fairfield, he kept the nation s fourth-leading goal scorer Greg Downing with a goal for the first time all season. Along with his seven groundballs against the Stags, he also forced four turnovers. Both Krygier and Von Voigt saw limited playing time in their first collegiate

5 JAC-0 BACK ON TRACK-O Junior Brian Jacovina (Hicksville, N.Y.) has been a key player all season after earning team MVP honors last year. The two-way midfielder has 25 points on seven goals and 18 assists -- second on the team -- on offense in addition to playing defense often and on the face-off wing. After a slow start, he has picked up his scoring pace lately. seasons but have combined to scoop up 38 groundballs and cause 19 turnovers this season. Krygier has been stellar in the NCAA Tournament. He guarded the nation s top scorer Athan Iannucci of Hofstra in the Quarterfinals and held him without a goal after he came into the game with 62. Iannucci had just one shot. In the NCAA First Round, playing great defense, he had a key strip which led to a fastbreak goal by Jamie Yaman. Also, in the final minute of action he held tough while Cornell could not muster a strong scoring chance. With Von Voigt suffering from an injury Danvers drew his first-career starts at Georgetown, vs. Fairfield, vs. Rutgers, at Cornell and vs. Hofstra. Von Voigt returned to action vs. Hofstra and played most of the game. Long-stick junior Dan Whipple (Longmeadow, Mass.) has been a mainstay on defense for the last two years. He has continued to flourish this year with 34 groundballs and 26 caused turnovers -- second-best on the team. He had his first career point on an assist at St. John s (4/8). Whipple has been a stud on defense all season. Whipple had one of his best games against Rutgers forcing four turnovers and grabbing three groundballs. Whipple continued his strong play of late with two groundballs and three caused turnovers against Cornell in the NCAA First Round. UMass man-down defense, which also features Matt Carroll (Ridgefield, Conn.) and Diogo Godoi (Loudon, N.H.), has allowed just 14 goals on 52 opportunities for a 73.1 percent efficiency, which ranks 16th in the nation. UMass allowed three man-up goals at Syracuse, forcing UMass from the top three in the nation in man-down defense. Prior to the Hofstra game and not including that Syracuse game, UMass allowed just three man-up goals in 21 chances over six games (14.3). RORY S ROARING SEASON Sophomore Rory Pedrick (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) is making the most of his extended playing time in his second season. As part of the second midfield, Pedrick has 26 points, second on the team. Pedrick has points in 13 of 16 games this season. Pedrick has eight multi-point games after he had just one point as a freshman in His biggest college moment came when he scored the game-tying goal with 49 seconds left in regulation against Hofstra in the NCAA Quarterfinals. The play was featured on ESPN s Plays of the Day and Plays of the Week at No. 8 for the week ending May 21. He also assisted Andrew Recchione s goal which cut the lead to 10-9 late in the fourth. He netted a career-high four points on two goals and two assists at St. John s (4/8). Pedrick had back-to-back multi-goal games -- the first two of his career -- against Harvard (3/11) and Albany (3/14). Pedrick also had a goal and two assists against Hobart (4/15). He had a career-best three assists vs. Sacred Heart (3/21). Pedrick had two assists in the first two games this season as well as his second-career goal in the opener against Hofstra (2/26). One of Pedrick s biggest plays of the season came on the assist to set-up Jake Deane s game-winning goal against Fairfield (4/25) with 34 seconds left. BRETT S A BIG THREAT Junior Brett Garber is tied for third on the team in points with 25 and fourth in goals with 16. The grandson of legendary coach Dick Garber, Brett got off to a slow start, but picked up his scoring pace with eight goals in the March 18 and March 21 games against Brown and Sacred Heart. The big game against Brown was special as he scored four goals at Stevenson Field, the site of his grandfather s 300th and final win as UMass coach. He has points in 11 of 16 games this season. He also has five man-up goals, tied with Jamie Yaman for best on the team. He has eight multi-point games, the last coming at Syracuse, when he had two goals. Garber has points in 25 of his last 31 games dating to last season. He scored a career-high four goals along with one assist for a career-high five points at Brown. He followed that up with his second straight four-goal game against Sacred Heart. In that contest, he tallied three goals in a 9-0 run including the game-winning tally. Garber assisted the game-winning goal which sent UMass to the NCAA Quarterfinals with the win over Hofstra on May 20. Jacovina had nine assists over the last four games and 10 points in the last four games, as well. Goals Per Game 1. He scored a goal in the NCAA First Round win at Cornell (5/13). Jacovina set up three first-quarter goals vs. Rutgers (5/6) on Senior Day and continued to play great defense as the Minutemen allowed a season-low five goals. He handed out a career-high four assists at Syracuse (4/29), which also set a new career high in points. Jacovina has points in 24 of his last 29 games. Jacovina came up huge in the miracle comeback against Fairfield (4/25) with the goal that came with 1:03 left in regulation to start the three-goal run in a 29-second. He also assisted Sean Morris game-tying goal. He also has 35 groundballs showing his hustle on defense and off the wing. BIG-GAME RECK Junior Andrew Recchione (Mahwah, N.J.) was the only player other than Sean Morris to have a point in every game this season until he was held scoreless in the eighth game at Penn State (4/1). Recchione scored in the first seven games of the year and has points in 13 of 16 games. He has more than doubled his goal output for his entire career (8) with 21 goals this season. He also has two assists for 23 points, tied for fifth-best on the team. He equaled last season s mark of six goals in just four games this season. Recchione scored the biggest goal of his career and of UMass season tothat-date with the game-winning tally at Cornell in the NCAA First Round on May 13. Recchione fired a blast past Matt McMonagle with 2:34 left in regulation to give UMass the 10-9 win on May 13. On UMass Senior Day, the junior posted his first-career hat trick with three goals in the second half of the win over Rutgers (5/6). Recchione has seven games with two goals this season starting with his first-career multi-goal game at Yale (3/4). He also scored two against Albany (3/14), Sacred Heart (3/21), Loyola (3/25), Hobart (4/15) and Fairfield (4/25), as well as at Cornell (5/13) in the NCAA First Round. SENSATIONAL START FOR CONNOLLY Freshmen attacker Jim Connolly (North Andover, Mass.) has made a nice transition from high school ball to college. Two-time high school All-American Connolly, who piled up 523 points in his high school career has 19 goals and four assists for 23 points in his first 16 collegiate games, all starts. Connolly had his biggest game on the biggest stage to send UMass off with the biggest win in program history when he had five goals including the game-winning overtime goal to beat Hofstra on May 20 in the NCAA Quarterfinals. He had a goal and two assists at Yale (3/4). Connolly had his first career hat trick at Brown (3/18) with three first half goals. He netted two goals in each of a three-game span: Loyola (3/25) at Penn State (4/1) and at. St. John s (4/8). His piled up four points at St. John s to set a career-best for points in his young career. SECOND MIDFIELD SCORING HIGH UMass second midfield is the highest scoring trio in the nation with Rory Pedrick (26 points), Andrew Recchione (23 points) and Jamie Yaman (16 points). 6 Head Coach Greg CANNELLA Recognized as one of the nation s top lacrosse coaches, Greg Cannella is in his 13th year at the helm of the University of Massachusetts program. Cannella has brought his Minutemen to six NCAA Tournaments, winning six tournament games since 1997, claiming six New England championships including 2006, won the 2005 and 2002 ECAC Lacrosse title after earning a share of the 2001 crown. He has been named ECAC Coach of the Year on three separate occasions in 2004, 2002, and 2001 and New England Coach of the Year four times including the last two seasons. He was named the 2006 USILA National Coach of the Year after leading UMass to its first-ever lacrosse NCAA Championship game. Cannella led UMass to its most memorable season in As an unseeded team, UMass had the most difficult path to a lacrosse championship game in history, beating the No. 2, 3 and 4 ranked teams in the nation. UMass topped No. 2 seed Maryland, 8-5 in the semifinals after advancing it its first Final Four with a stunning overtime win over Hofstra on May 20, The miracle comeback saw the Minutemen rally from a 10-5 deficit with 8:03 left in the fourth quarter as UMass won its quarterfinal game at Stony Brook. The 2006 season saw UMass produce two first-team USILA All- Americans for the first time in school history with Sean Morris on attack and Jack Reid being honored on defense. A 1988 UMass graduate Cannella took the reigns of the UMass lacrosse program in the fall of 1994 with a great understanding of the program s storied history. He was a two-time letterwinner under the legendary Dick Garber in the mid-1980s and an assistant coach for two seasons with the Minutemen. Cannella is just the fourth head coach in the program s history. The 2005 season will go down as one of the most successful in school history as the Minutemen tied the school record for wins a 13-3 record.
