9 2007 HOFSTRA GAME SUMMARIES GAME 1 - Saturday, February 24, 2007 vs. #9 Massachusetts: Sophomore Mike Colleluori's second goal of the game, with 4:26 remaining, broke a 6-6 tie as #18 Hofstra (1-0) defeated #9 Massachusetts (0-1), 8-6, in head coach Seth Tierney's Pride debut at James M. Shuart Stadium. Hofstra won its 17th consecutive regular season game and recorded its 16th straight home victory. Hofstra junior Mike Unterstein added an insurance goal with 1:42 to play and the Hofstra defense thwarted a Massachusetts manadvantage in the final minute to hold-on to the win and exact a little revenge for the only two blemishes on their 17-2 season last year. The Pride had bookend losses to UMass in 2006, including a heartbreaking NCAA Tournament quarterfinal loss in overtime. In addition to Colleluori, sophomore Tom Dooley, the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie of the Year in 2006, and senior Ryan Miller each added two goals. Senior Bill Peters had two assists and freshman keeper Danny Orlando posted 13 saves to snap a six-game losing streak to the Minutemen. Massachusetts received two goals from Rory Pedrick and Brett Garber, while Doc Schneider posted nine saves in the cage. In a game that featured six tied scores and two lead changes, UMass on two goals by Garber in the final 2:32 of the half took a 3-2 lead at halftime. But Hofstra attackman Ryan Miller, who made his return on Saturday after sitting out the past two seasons, made a pretty move to the cage, beating his defender, and scooping a shot past Schneider to tie the game at 3-3 just 1:13 in the third quarter. But seven minutes later UMass Pedrick took a short pass on the run from Jim Connolly and beat Orlando from five yards out for a 4-3 advantage. Colleluori, tied the game for Hofstra less than a minute later on a dodge from the wing, before Pedrick gave the Minutemen the lead again, charging from behind the cage and beating Orlando on the way through to close out the scoring in the quarter. The Pride tied the contest 3:11 into the fourth period as freshman Dan Stein took a short pass from Bill Peters and streaked across the goal mouth for his first collegiate goal. Hofstra took its first lead since a 2-1 advantage early in the second as Dooley picked up a rebound of a Anthony Muscarella shot and beat Schneider from in close with 8:46 to play in the fourth. But Denis Whelan took a pass from Paul Manesis and beat Orlando from 10 yards out to cap a transition 4-on- 3 fast break and tie the game at 5-all with 5:55 remaining. It seemed only fitting that Colleluori, who lost his older brother and teammate, Nick, in late November after a courageous 14-month battle with Non-Hodgkins lymphoma, would score the winning goal and stop a six-game losing skid to UMass, Colleluori fired a bounce shot, on the run, that nestled just under the crossbar for a 7-6 lead. Unterstein s goal with 1:42 to play gave the Pride a little cushion, especially as they were killing off a one minute illegal check penalty taken with 1:05 remaining. Hofstra outshot the Minutemen 41-34, and picked up 29 ground balls to UMass 18. Orlando posted nine of his 13 saves in the second half. * Nike/IL ranking F #9 Massachusetts #18 Hofstra Hofstra Scoring: Goals: Tom Dooley 2, Mike Colleluori 2, Ryan Miller 2, Dan Stein, Mike Unterstein; Assists: Bill Peters 2 UMass Scoring: Goals: Rory Pedrick, 2, Brett Garber 2, Jim Connolly, Denis Whelen ; Assists: Tim Balise, Jim Connolly, Paul Manesis, Rory Pedrick, Andrew Recchione Hofstra UMass Shots: Ground Balls: Face-offs Won: 9 9 Saves: 13 9 Penalties: EMO: Clears/Att Goalies: HU-Danny Orlando (60:00, 6 GA, 13 svs.); UMass Doc Schneider (60:00, 8 GA, 9 svs.) Attendance: 1,503 GAME 2 - March 3, 2007 at Brown: Freshman Thomas Muldoon scored three goals, including one with 3:38 remaining in the fourth quarter, and sophomore goaltender Jordan Burke made 10 saves, including a huge stop with two minutes remaining on a point-blank shot as the Brown Bears edged the 14 th -ranked Hofstra Pride, 7-6. With Brown holding a 6-5 lead entering the fourth quarter, the Pride s Bill Peters scored 1:17 into the period to tie the game at six. After a ground ball pickup by freshman Jake Hardy at 9:23 off of a Burke save, the Bears methodically worked the ball around for nearly six minutes, taking three shots in that span before senior Will Davis set up Muldoon, who fired a shot from the goalie s right that went into the top left corner. After winning the following face-off, Hofstra went on the attack. The Pride was able to find sophomore middie Anthony Muscarella for a one-on-one with Burke, and Muscarella launched a rocket that Burke got the head of his stick up over his right shoulder in time to knock the ball down. Although there was three tied scores in the game, the Bears never trailed in the contest, although Hofstra never let the lead get larger than two goals. Sophomore Kyle Hollingsworth had two goals, while Davis and sophomore Jack Walsh added one each. Freshman Zach Caldwell and Davis had the Bears two assists. Hofstra received two goals from sophomore Tommy Dooley and a goal and an assist from senior Bill Peters. Freshman goalie Danny Orlando made 10 saves in the Pride cage While the shots were close, with Brown holding a advantage, Bruno won the battle for loose balls, holding a advantage on ground balls. For the Pride, Adam Swarsen, Ryan Miller and Peters each picked up six ground balls.
