3 long island home coming Sunday s game in Bethpage is a homecoming for the Duke coaching staff as well as a number of current Blue Devils. Head coach John Danowski, Matt Danowski and Ron Caputo all were born and raised in Long Island. Danowski s daughter still resides there and teaches at Bethpage. Returning to their roots are Jack Bruckner, Sean Cerrone, Brian Dunne, Jack and Danny Fowler, Justin Guterding, and Tommy Zenker. 4 best for a Danowski-coached Duke squad since the 2009 team sported a 7.85 GAA. The Blue Devils talented 2007, 2008 and 2009 teams all had goals against averages under eight. In Duke s three national championship seasons (2010, 2013, 2014), the Blue Devils allowed 9.37, 9.80 and 9.39 goals per game, respectively, through the first 15 games of the season. duke s Defensive stand in past 11 games In nine of the past 11 games, Duke has held its opponent to eight or fewer goals. The lone exceptions are No. 5 Syracuse, scoring 12 goals and Virginia netting 11 goals. In the Blue Devils 9-2 stretch, Duke is allowing just 7.63 goals per game and holding teams to.256 shooting. 5 Top Scoring Attack Lines The trio of Guterding, Bruckner and Joey Manown is one of the highest scoring attack units nationally both this season and in overall career points. Duke s trio is third nationally in the nation with 162 points (106g, 56a) this season, 18 behind leader Princeton s 180. Bolstered by 405 career points from Guterding and Bruckner, the trio has amassed 435 points on 300 goals and 135 assists to lead current attack units. The trio has been particularly effective since being solidified as the starting unit against Loyola March 11. The group has combined for 100 points (69g, 31a), accounting for 56 percent of the team s points in the 7-2 stretch. He also is the fastest Blue Devil to 100 career points and is tied for the fastest player to 200 points. He is on pace for 84 points this season as he aims to become just the 10th Blue Devil to score 80 points in a season and only the seventh to reach the 90-point benchmark. He is one of six Blue Devils to rank in the top 15 in school history in career points (216), goals (136) and assists (80). Bruckner and Guterding dynamic duo The Batman and Robin tandem of Bruckner and Guterding has been unstoppable this season. In all 13 of Duke s game this season the leading scorer has been either Guterding or Bruckner. Guterding has led the way himself eight times, tied with Bruckner three times and Joey Manown once. Bruckner was tops in points against Syracuse, Denver and Notre Dame in the regular season. Overall, the duo is the highest scoring attacking tandem in the country with Duke being the lone school to have two players in the top 10 among active players in career goals and one of two schools to have two players ranked in the top 20 in goals per game. Of Bruckner s 43 goals in 2017, 17 of them (40 percent) have been assisted by Guterding. 6 Fowler Hitting His Stride Duke goaltender Danny Fowler starting hitting his stride as the Blue Devils hit the midway point of the regular season. Fowler has stopped at least 50 percent of shots in 10 of the past 11 games after registering a save percentage below.500 in three of the first four games. He has double digit saves in seven games this season. Joey Manown Turning the Corner In the past nine games, rookie attackman Joey Manown has 22 points to push his season total to 30. The 22 points are 14 more than his total from the first six games of the year. He started his career with eight points in his first three games before going on a three-game scoreless stretch. He rejoined the starting lineup against Loyola and was instrumental in the Blue Devils victory as he netted his first career hat trick. He has at least two goals in six of the past nine games, has recorded three hat tricks and at least one point in every game. sophomore bump for smith Sophomore midfielder Brad Smith owns 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points, surpassing his total of 14 in his 19 games as a rookie. In 2016, Smith had nine goals and five assists and registered multiple points in four games with a season-high three points against Georgetown. Guterding s Switch from 33 to 14 One of the noticeable differences in the Blue Devils in 2017 is the new number for attackman Justin Guterding. Duke s top scorer changed his number to 14 to honor the late Eddie Blatz. Blatz was a high school teammate of Guterding s at Garden City and played at Georgetown from all in the family for giles-harris Rookie close defenseman John Thomas (JT) Giles- Harris isn t the only one from his family making a name for himself in Durham. JT s brother, Joe, was a redshirt freshman on the Duke football team and led the team in tackles with 107. 7 van raaphorst s athletic lineage Sophomore close defenseman Cade Van Raaphorst traded the football for the lacrosse stick despite hailing from a family of elite college quarterbacks. Cade is the son of Jeff Van Raaphorst, quarterback at Arizona State leading the Sun Devils to the Pac-10 and Rose Bowl title in He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in Jeff also played in the NFL for a few seasons. Uncle, Mike Van Raaphorst, was the backup quarterback to Carson Palmer at Southern California. up next The Division I men s lacrosse NCAA selection show will be aired live on ESPNU Sunday night at 9 p.m. They will reveal which 16 teams made the field as well as the play-in game, the winner of which will play the No. 1 seed. Ethan Powley Returns to LSM Senior captain Ethan Powley returns to his natural long stick middie position in The veteran pole is Duke s top returning takeaway artist and a ground ball leader. He posted a career-best 21 caused turnovers and was third among defensive players with 36 ground balls in He needs 14 ground balls to reach 100 for his career. Smith, Lindsay win gold Duke midfielders Brad Smith and Terry Lindsay helped lead the United States U-19 squad to the FIL U19 World Championship this past summer. Smith played much of the tournament on the first midfield line, while Lindsay was crucial as a defensive midfielder. They are the latest Blue Devils to win gold with Team USA. Caputo Joins the Defense The Duke coaching staff switched things up this season as assistant coach Ron Caputo moves from the offensive to the defensive side of the ball. Caputo has worked closely with the midfield and attack during his time with Duke. Oh Captains My Captains The quartet of seniors Jack Bruckner, Danny Fowler, Ethan Powley and Tommy Zenker will lead the Blue Devils in Fowler follows in the footsteps of his brother Brendan, who captained the Blue Devils to the 2014 NCAA title.
