L, % NCAA Tournament + ACC Tournament LAST TIME OUT Justin Guterding scored five goals and added an assist to lead the 12th-ranked Blue Devils to a 12-7 victory at Georgetown this past Saturday. Joey Manown added two goals and two assists to the scoring effort, while Danny Fowler made 11 saves to anchor the defensive effort. The Blue Devils got on the board with a fastbreak goal from Terry Lindsay at the 10:19 mark of the opening quarter and Guterding added his 21st tally of the year just over a minute later to help the Blue Devils push their lead to 4-1 after 15 minutes. Duke led 7-2 at the half and held off a third-quarter charge from the Hoyas for the five-goal victory. Kyle Rowe finished his day at the X, winning 12-of- 22 with eight ground balls. LAST TIME WE MET Eighth-ranked Syracuse outscored Duke 5-0 after a three-hour weather delay to capture the 2016 ACC Men s Lacrosse Championship title with a 14-8 victory over the No. 13 Blue Devils last season. Tim Barber paced the Orange offense with four goals and an assist, while Sergio Salcido had two goals and three assists. Myles Jones and Brad Smith led Duke with a pair of goals apiece. Danny Fowler was outstanding between the pipes again for the Blue Devils with a season-high 17 saves. Kyle Rowe went 11-of-24 at the faceoff X and scored a goal for the Blue Devils. 3 SCOUTING SYRACUSE Syracuse is 5-1 and ranked fifth in the latest coaches poll. The Orange is coming off of an 8-7 overtime victory over Johns Hopkins last weekend. The Orange have only scored nine and eight goals in its past two outings after averaging 14 goals in the first four games. Nick Mariano leads Syracuse s balanced offense with 22 points (12g, 10a), while Sergio Salcido has 20 from six goals and a team-best 14 assists. Three other players have at least 10 points as the Orange average just over 21 points per game. Tyson Bomberry headlines the defense with six caused turnovers and 17 ground balls, while Scott Firman has five and 12, respectively. In goal, Evan Molloy sports a.505 save percentage and a 9.59 goals against average. BLUE DEVILS VS. SYRACUSE Only 15 current Blue Devils have played multiple games against Syracuse in their careers. Justin Guterding and Jack Bruckner are the top scorers with nine and 10 points, respectively. Kyle Rowe has won 54 percent of his faceoffs overall and 56 percent in his two full outings. This will be the fourth game where both Rowe and Williams square off as the primary faceoff men. Williams is at 59 percent this season and Rowe at 56. Both are averaging over six ground balls per game. Rowe has won at least 50 percent of his draws in five of eight games, while Williams is at or above 50 percent in all five of his outings and most recently went 9-of-18 at Johns Hopkins. Duke s trio is second nationally in scoring this season with 98 points (60g, 38a)... Only Virginia (104) is higher. Bruckner and Guterding s 78 points alone this season are tied for seventh among threeman units. On the career list, Guterding, Bruckner and Manown top the list. Bolstered by 351 points from Guterding and Bruckner, the trio has amassed 371 points on 254 goals and 117 assists to lead current attack units. Maryland is second with 369 career points and first with 257 career goals. Bruckner and Guterding s 351 points alone rank second behind the Terrapin trio. For the fifth straight game, Duke held its opponent to eight or fewer goals and to a.300 or lower shooting percentage. In the Blue Devils five-game win streak, Duke is allowing just 6.20 goals per game and holding teams to.218 shooting. Fowler is averaging 9.4 saves per game and owns a 5.99 goals against average and a.635 save percentage. He has stopped at least 55 percent of shots faced in each of the past five games and posted double digit saves in three of them. 4 DUKE SPECIAL TEAMS ARE SPECIAL Since allowing two man-up goals on four chances in the season-opening loss to Air Force, the Blue Devils have surrendered just six extra-man scores on 23 man-up opportunities for their opponents. Overall, Duke is successfully killing 70 percent of its penalties this season, the best in the ACC and 21st nationally. The Blue Devils have found good success on man up this season, converting 56 percent of their extra man opportunities. Duke owns the best EMO in the ACC and is third nationally. AGAINST RANKED OPPONENTS Since 2006, Duke is (.667) versus ranked opponents. Danowski is third among active coaches across all three divisions and is on pace to become the first Division I head coach to reach 400 wins potentially in the 2018 season. JOEY MANOWN TURNING THE CORNER In the past three games, rookie attackman Joey Manown has 12 points to push his season total to 20. The 12 points are four more than his total from the first six games of the year. He started his career with eight points in his first three games before going on a three-game scoreless stretch. He rejoined the starting lineup against Loyola and was instrumental in the Blue Devils victory as he netted his first career hat trick. Manown added a second hat trick two days later against Jacksonville and had four points at Georgetown. FOWLER HITTING HIS STRIDE Duke goaltender Danny Fowler is hitting his stride as the Blue Devils hit the midway point of the regular season. Fowler has stopped at least 55 percent of shots during the five-game win streak after registering a save percentage below.500 in three of the first four games. He has double digit saves in four games this season, including the season-high 14 against Loyola. In 2016, Smith had nine goals and five assists for 14 points. He registered multiple points in four games with a season-high three points against Georgetown last season. In nine games this season, Smith has multiple points in six outings and registered a careerhigh four points against Cleveland State. SUCCESS AT THE X Duke senior faceoff specialist Kyle Rowe is having a solid 2017, winning 56 percent of his faceoffs in the seven games he has played. He has picked up double digit ground balls in two of the eight games and has won the ground ball in 70 percent of the faceoffs that resulted in ground balls (54-of-77). Of the 91 faceoffs overall won by Rowe, he has 54 ground balls on them, has won six on violation, 21 have been picked up by Blue Devil teammates and eight resulted in a technical violation or no ground ball. He is on pace for just over 80 points this season as he aims to be the fastest player to reach 200 career points. He needs just 13 points and is on pace to reach the mark in 49 games, one faster than Zack Greer s 50. UPPGREN GRABS FIRST WIN Redshirt freshman goaltender Turner Uppgren picked up his first career victory between the pipes against Cleveland State. Uppgren came off the bench in the second quarter against the Vikings and made six saves and allowed just one goal in 27:10 of action. He saw his first minutes in goal, playing the second half against High Point. He made one save and allowed one goal against the Panthers. In 80:11 in the cage, Uppgren sports a 3.74 goals against average and a.667 save percentage. GUTERDING S SWITCH FROM 33 TO 14 One of the noticeable differences in the Blue Devils in 2017 is the new number for attackman Justin Guterding. Duke s top scorer changed his number to 14 to honor the late Eddie Blatz. Blatz was a high school teammate of Guterding s at Garden City and played at Georgetown from name for himself in Durham. JT s brother, Joe, was a redshirt freshman on the Duke football team and led the team in tackles with 107. Joe garnered honorable mention All-ACC honors in a vote of the league s coaches and was named a USA Today Sports First Team Freshman All-American. VAN RAAPHORST S ATHLETIC LINEAGE Sophomore close defenseman Cade Van Raaphorst traded the football for the lacrosse stick despite hailing from a family of elite college quarterbacks. Cade is the son of Jeff Van Raaphorst, quarterback at Arizona State leading the Sun Devils to the Pac-10 and Rose Bowl title in He was inducted into the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame in Jeff also played in the NFL for a few seasons. Uncle, Mike Van Raaphorst, was the backup quarterback to Carson Palmer at Southern California. ETHAN POWLEY RETURNS TO LSM Senior captain Ethan Powley will return to his natural long stick middie position in The veteran pole is Duke s top returning takeaway artist and a ground ball leader. He posted a career-best 21 caused turnovers and was third among defensive players with 36 ground balls in He needs 23 ground balls to reach 100 for his career. SMITH, LINDSAY WIN GOLD Duke midfielders Brad Smith and Terry Lindsay helped lead the United States U-19 squad to the FIL U19 World Championship this past summer. Smith played much of the tournament on the first midfield line, while Lindsay was crucial as a defensive midfielder. They are the latest Blue Devils to win gold with Team USA. DUKE FEATURES HERALDED ROOKIE CLASS Inside Lacrosse tabbed Duke s rookie class as the best in the nation heading into The group features six players ranked in the top 36 of Inside Lacrosse s Power 100 list. Attackman Joey Manown, after a postgraduate year at Deerfield Academy, headlines the group at No. 7, while midfielders Reilly Walsh (Brunswick) and Terry Lindsay (Georgetown Prep) rounded out Duke in the top 15 at Nos. 12 and 13, respectively. Kevin Quigley (Ridge) was No. 17 and defenseman JT Giles-Harris (St. Joseph s [N.J.]) was 25th. Brian Smyth (Westminster School), a faceoff specialist, was the final Blue Devil in the rankings at No. 36. Walsh, Smyth and Giles-Harris suited up for the North Team and Quigley wore the South Team jersey at the 2016 Under Armour All-America game. CAPUTO JOINS THE DEFENSE The Duke coaching staff switched things up this season as assistant coach Ron Caputo moves from the offensive to the defensive side of the ball. Caputo has worked closely with the midfield and attack during his time with Duke. Head coach John Danowski had been with the defense for the past few seasons and now Caputo will take over the reins with volunteer assistant coach Alec Jernstedt, while John Danowski joins his son Matt on offense. OH CAPTAINS MY CAPTAINS The quartet of seniors Jack Bruckner, Danny Fowler, Ethan Powley and Tommy Zenker will lead the Blue Devils in Fowler follows in the footsteps of his brother Brendan, who captained the Blue Devils to the 2014 NCAA title.
