It marks the 27th consecutive season the two schools have met at least once dating back to Saturday s game is a rematch of last year s NCAA title game won by the Orange, 13-10, at Gillette Stadium in Foxboro, Mass. LORDS OF THE RING Syracuse and Johns Hopkins have combined to win half (19) of the 38 NCAA Championships since men s lacrosse became an NCAA-sponsored sport in The Orange has an NCAA-record 10 NCAA titles. Syracuse claimed its record 10th NCAA title with a victory against Johns Hopkins. The Orange became just the second team in NCAA history to win the national championship after missing the playoffs the previous season. The 1983 edition of the Orange claimed the crown after finishing 6-4 in 1982 and failing to advance to the postseason. Head coach John Desko hoisted the hardware for the fourth time in his career. He lists third all-time with four NCAA titles. Only Bill Tierney (Princeton) and Roy Simmons Jr. (Syracuse) have more, each winning the championship six times. Dan Hardy Brendan Loftus Senior attackman Mike Leveille earned the tournament s Most Outstanding Player honor after posting three points on one goal and two assists against the Blue Jays. He tallied 11 goals and eight assists in the 2008 tournament. Junior midfielder Dan Hardy led the Orange offense with a team-high three goals against the Blue Jays en route to all-tournament team recognition. Senior faceoff specialist Danny Brennan joined Hardy and Leveille on the all-tournament team. He posted a 13-for-26 performance at the X in the title game and scored his first career goal in the opening period. Syracuse trailed 4-2 after the quarter, but the Orange used a 6-1 run beginning at the 9:01 mark of the second period to take a commanding 8-5 lead with 13:41 to go in the third quarter. The Blue Jays responded, scoring three of the game s next four goals and twice trimming the Orange lead to one. With JHU trying for the equalizer, Loftus first goal of the game, coming with 8:02 to play in the third, keyed another SU scoring run, this time a 5-1 spurt, that put the game out of reach. The 48,970 fans in attendance represented the largest crowd to ever witness an NCAA outdoor championship in any sport. 3 NOTES POSTSEASON CLASHES A STAPLE OF CUSE-HOPKINS RIVALRY The Blue Jays and Orange have met 12 times in the postseason making Hopkins SU s most familiar NCAA Tournament foe. Syracuse is 8-4 in those meetings, fi ve of which have come with the championship on the line (1983, 1984, 1985, 1989, 2008). Syracuse has won three of fi ve title tilts, posting a win in 1983 to claim its fi rst NCAA crown, a win in 1989 and last year s championship game win NCAA CHAMPS CELEBRATE 20TH ANNIVERSARY Members of the 1989 Syracuse men s lacrosse team will celebrate the 20th anniversary of their NCAA Championship with a reunion on March 14 at the Carrier Dome. More than 20 members of that squad will be recognized at halftime of Saturday s game. The team featured nine All- Americans, including first-teamers Gary and Paul Gait, Pat McCabe and John Zulberti. The Gaits and McCabe are all National Lacrosse Hall of Fame inductees as is Tom Marechek, who earned second-team All-America recognition in McCabe is expected to be on hand Saturday as are All-Americans Mark Stopher, Phil Schulter, Steve Scaramuzzino and a host of other players. The 1989 squad was the second of three consecutive Orange NCAA-title winning teams. Syracuse fi nished that season with a 14-1 overall record, including a thrilling victory against Johns Hopkins in the championship game. Ironically, the 1989 Blue Jays featured a defenseman by the name of Dave Pietramala who will also be in the Dome Saturday as the current head coach of his alma mater. Hopkins was the only team to defeat Syracuse in 1989, winning in the season opener. From there Syracuse reeled off 14 straight wins to secure the program s third NCAA title. SCOUTING THE BLUE JAYS Johns Hopkins has won its last two games since losing to Princeton, 14-18, on Feb. 28 and enters Saturday s game with a 3-1 record. Sophomore Kyle Wharton leads the squad in points (14) and goals (11). He scored a career-best fi ve goals in the Blue Jays most recent outing, a 12-7 victory versus Hofstra. Junior midfi elder Michael Kimmel has been the team s best feeder with six assists. The defense is led by senior Tewaaraton Trophy candidates Matt Drenan and Michael Evans. Both have started all four games and Drenan leads the squad with 18 ground balls. Like Syracuse, the Blue Jays have been hit by injuries at the faceoff X. The team s best faceoff man, Matt Dolente, missed the Hofstra game and was replaced by freshman Marshall Burkhart and junior Michael Powers. Powers was 6-of-9 on faceoffs against the Pride. Dave Pietramala is in his ninth season as the head coach of his alma mater and his 12th year as a collegiate head coach. He owns a career record and ranks fourth on the NCAA s list of winningest active coaches by percentage. Pietramala has guided the Blue Jays to two NCAA Championships (2005 and 2007). He is since taking over at Johns Hopkins in He goes for his 100th win as head coach of the Blue Jays Saturday against Syracuse. Pct Totals SYRACUSE LEADS NATION IN SCORING The Orange possesses the country s most potent offense as Syracuse leads all Division I in scoring this season at goals per contest. The Orange has 59 goals on the year and tallied a seasonbest 22 in its season-opening win against Providence on Feb. 15, tied with Colgate for the most goals in a Division I game this year. Colgate scored 22 in its win over Holy Cross. Bryant also had 22 versus Sacred Heart, but is in the process of reclassifying to Division I and therefore it does not appear in the national statistics. Virginia is a close second in team scoring aveage at goals per game. The Orange ranks third nationally in total points per game (22.75). ORANGE ALSO TOPS IN SCORING MARGIN In addition to scoring offense, Syracuse also leads the nation in scoring margin at The Orange has notched 59 goals this season compared to 27 for its opponents and owns an average margin of victory of The Orange defeated Providence 22-3 in its season opener on Feb. 15. The 19-goal win represented the largest margin of victory for Syracuse since it knocked off Michigan State by 20, 27-7, on March 10, SPECIAL TEAMS HAVE BEEN SPECIAL Syracuse is tied for fi rst and is second, respectively, in the national statistics for man-down defense and offense this season. The team s man-down unit is tied with Harvard and Hofstra for the best success rate (.857) in the country. SU opponents are just 2-of-14 on extra opportunities this season. The school record for man-down defense success is.812 (69-85) set in On the opposite side, SU has scored on nine of its 14 extra-man chances this season (.643) Its man-up success rate is second to UMBC (.667). Through four games the Orange is on pace to break the school record for extra-man effi ciency (.518, 43-83) established in Syracuse converted on a season-high six man-up opportunities in its season-opening victory against Providence on Feb. 15. The last time the Orange scored six extra-man goals was on April 26, 2002 in a win against Massachusetts. DEFENSIVELY DOMINANT Syracuse surrendered just three goals in its season-opening victory against Providence, one off the Carrier Dome record for the fewest goals allowed (2 vs. Binghamton, 2008). It has limited three of its four opponents this season to less than 10 goals and two of the four (Providence and Georgetown) to fi ve or less. In the 22 games that Lelan Rogers has served as defensive coordinator, the Orange has allowed 10 or fewer goals 16 times (.727). Syracuse has allowed fi ve or less in seven of those 22 contests. In the fi ve years ( ) prior to Rogers taking over the defense, Syracuse allowed fi ve or fewer goals a total of four times in 74 games. NIMS RIDING A 20-GAME POINT STREAK Senior Kenny Nims has recorded at least one point in each of his last 20 games, which is tied for the seventh-longest active streak in the nation with Notre Dame s Grant Krebs. The last time Nims failed to fi nd the scoring column was on Feb. 24, 2008 against Army. 5 NOTES NIMS FOURTH IN THE NATION IN SCORING Senior attackman Kenny Nims is ranked fourth nationallly in scoring in the latest NCAA statistics. Nims leads the Orange in points (19) and assists (9). He is second the team with 10 goals. Nims is averaging 4.75 points per game in Cornell s Rob Pannell leads the nation at 5.33 points per outing. He notched a career-best eight points against Providence in the season opener, including personal-best with fi ve assists. His eight-point showing was the fi rst for an SU player since Mike Powell had eight agianst Army in Nims fi ve assists in the Providence victory is tied for tops in the nation with Duke s Ned Crotty. Crotty had fi ve helpers against Bucknell on Feb. 14. KEOGH TAKES OVER GOALS LEAD Sophomore attackman Stephen Keogh netted four goals at Georgetown on March 7 to increase his season total to 13, which leads the team. The performance vaulted him into seventh in the nation in goals per game (3.25) and 12th in points per game (4.25). Keogh is second on the team with 17 total points. Keogh has had two fi ve-point showings already this season. He scored a career-high seven points, including fi ve goals, against Providence. He also had an assist in addition to his four goals against the Hoyas. KEOGH STILL A MAN-UP SNIPER Sophomore attackman Stephen Keogh played almost exclusively in man-up situations last season and paced the Orange with nine extra-man scores. With an expanded role this season he has continued to be a man-up threat and leads Syracuse with four extra-man goals. HARDY REACHES MILESTONE Senior Dan Hardy reached the 100-point mark for his career with two goals and an assist against Virginia on Feb. 27. The preseason second-team All-American is the team s highest scoring midfi elder this season with 11 points. He also leads all SU midfi elders with six goals. Hardy has 104 career points (64g, 40a). ABBOTT BREAKS OUT AGAINST GEORGETOWN Senior midfi elder Matt Abbott had his best offensive game of the season on March 7 at Georgetown. He tied his career-best with three points, including two goals in SU s 3-0 scoring in the second half that clinched the victory. It was the sixth multi-goal game of his career. ABBOTT DOES IT ALL Senior midfi elder Matt Abbott has established himself as one of the best two-way players in the game. He is a member of SU s top midfi eld unit and has contributed three goals and one assist on the season. He also plays the wing on faceoffs, is part of the team s man-down unit and plays in defensive situations. Abbott lists third on the Orange in ground balls (12) and is the team s active leader in that category with 147. ABBOTT A CANDIDATE FOR LOWE S SENIOR CLASS AWARD Senior midfi elder Matt Abbott is one of 30 nominees for the 2009 Lowe s Senior CLASS Award in the sport of men s lacrosse. The award, presented annually to the most outstanding NCAA Division I student-athletes in nine different sports, focuses on the Four C s of classroom, character, community and competition. A 2009 team captain, Abbott has been named to the SU Athletic Director s Honor Roll in six of his fi rst seven semesters on campus and will graduate with a degree in fi nance in May. A national media panel will select the 10 fi nalists for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award midway through the regular season. Those 10 names will be placed on a ballot for nationwide voting by coaches, media and fans. The winner will be announced and recognized at the 2009 NCAA Lacrosse Championships in Foxboro, Mass. Former Orange standout Mike Leveille won the award last year, the second time it was presented in the sport of men s lacrosse. Cornell goalie Matt McMonagle was the inaugural winner in NEW YORK STATE OF MIND The Orange is all-time against teams located in the state of New York, good for a.688 winning percentage. SU has at least a.500 record in every season of the Desko Era when notching 10 scores, and the Orange has tallied at least 10 goals in 135 of Desko s 162 games as head coach (.833). Amidon already has fi ve goals and seven points through four games. He scored fi ve goals and totaled six points all of last season. He s proved to be a marksman from outside and he ranks second on the Orange in shooting percentage (.625, 5-8) among players with at least fi ve shot attempts. KAHOE CONTRIBUTING Senior midfi elder Scott Kahoe has made his mark this season after transferring to Syracuse from Georgetown. Kahoe has at least one point in every game and has multiple points in three of the Orange s four contests. Kahoe has seven points this season, including four goals. He had an assist against his former team on March 7 in SU s 8-5 win against the Hoyas. Kahoe has also contributed on faceoffs, going 7-for-15 (.467) at the X. SMITH AND LADE LEAD CLOSE DEFENSE Senior defenseman Sid Smith and sophomore John Lade are tied for the team lead among defenders with nine ground balls each. Lade recorded a team-best fi ve in the Orange s win at Georgetown on March 7. Smith is a preseason fi rst-team All-American and had a campaign-best four against Virginia on Feb. 27. The duo teamed with junior Matt Tierney to hold Georgetown s top two attackmen (Ricky Mirabito and Craig Dowd) to one point in SU s last outing. GALLOWAY POSTS CAREER HIGH Sophomore goaltender John Galloway had his fi nest performance in an SU uniform in the team s 8-5 at Georgetown on March 7. Galloway made a career-high 19 saves against the Hoyas, including six in the fourth quarter with the Orange hanging on to a one-goal lead. He recorded a.792 save percentage in the contest, stopping 19 of the 24 shots Georgetown put on goal. JUST WIN BABY Sophomore goalie John Galloway has started all 22 games he has played for the Orange since winning the starting job as freshman prior to the Galloway owns a 19-3 overall record as a starter and has been the keeper of record in all 22 contests. Galloway set a school season record for victories (16) last season to help the Orange win the NCAA Championship. So far this season Galloway has 44 saves and lists in the top 10 nationally in goals-against average (8th, 6.91) and save percentage (7th,.621). ABBOTT, HARDY INVITED TO U.S. NATIONAL TEAM TRYOUTS Seniors Matt Abbott and Dan Hardy have been invited to try out for the 2010 U.S. men s lacrosse team, which will compete in the Federation of International Lacrosse (FIL) World Championship in Manchester, England from July 10-24, They are two of 12 current college players that have been selected to try out. Overall, seven current and former Orange standouts are among the 84 players selected by U.S. Lacrosse to participate in the national team tryouts. In addition to Abbott and Hardy, former SU stars Mike Leveille, Ryan Powell, Steven Brooks, Brendan Loftus and Jarett Park have also been invited to the tryouts, which will be held from June 7-10, 2009 at Bryant University in Smithfi eld, R.I. 7 NOTES ORANGE PLACE FIVE ON TEWAARATON TROPHY WATCH LIST Five Orange players have been named to the 2009 Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List, which was released on Feb. 19 by the Tewaaraton Award Foundation. Seniors Matt Abbott, Kenny Nims, Dan Hardy and sophomores John Galloway and Joel White are candidates for the award, which is presented to the college lacrosse player of the year. Syracuse s fi ve nominees matched Virginia for the most nominees from any one school. In all, 60 players are considered candidates for the award, which will be presented on May 28. The Tewaaraton Trophy has been presented each year since Syracuse attackman Mike Leveille won the award last year. He was the second Orange player to do so, joining 2002 and 2004 Tewaaraton Trophy winner Mike Powell. KEOGH, DEFENSE DOES IN GEORGETOWN Sophomore attackman Stephen Keogh came off the bench to score four of the Orange s eight goals and classmate John Galloway made a career-best 19 saves to lead the Orange to a 8-5 victory at Georgetown on March 7. Keogh had two goals in each half and contributed an assist to fi nish with a game-best fi ve points. Galloway made nine saves in the second quarter to preserve 2-1 halftime lead and stopped six more in the fourth quarter with SU holding a 6-5 advantage heading into the fi nal 15 minutes. Syracuse outscored Georgetown, 2-0, in the fourth to produce the three-goal win. The Orange defense surrendered just two points to Hoya attackmen. HUGE CROWD PACKS DOME FOR SYRACUSE-VIRGINIA The second-largest crowd in the NCAA this season was on hand at the Carrier Dome on Feb. 27 for the No. 1 vs. No. 2 showdown of Syracuse and Virginia. Attendance for the game between the two powerhouse programs was 16,595, the thirdlargest regular-season Dome lacrosse crowd in school history and fourth-largest overall (including NCAA playoffs). ORANGE FALLS SHORT AGAINST VIRGINIA The matchup of the top two ranked teams in the nation lived up to the advance billing with second-ranked Virginia holding off the top-ranked Orange, 13-12, on Feb. 27. The Cavaliers led by fi ve in the fourth quarter, but Syracuse struck for four goals in the last fi ve minutes to get within one before a turnover on the Orange s fi nal possession sealed it for the Cavaliers. Senior Kenny Nims led the Orange with four goals, including consecutive tallies late in the fourth to help the Orange get within striking distance. The loss ended SU s 11-game home winning streak dating back to the start of the 2008 season. ORANGE DOMINATES MIDDLE TWO QUARTERS AGAINST ARMY Syracuse trailed, 3-1, after the fi rst period, but outscored No. 18 Army by the count of 11-1 in the second and third quarters to cruise to a 17-6 victory against the Black Knights on Feb. 20. Syracuse outscored Army 4-0 in the second quarter and 7-1 in the third quarter in the win. Senior attackman Kenny Nims led the Orange in scoring with six points (3g, 3a) and he had a hand in four of SU s seven scores in the third frame, scoring twice and handing out two assists. NIMS AND KEOGH TEAM UP TO PACE SU AGAINST PROVIDENCE The attack combination of senior Kenny Nims and sophomore Stephen Keogh combined for eight goals and 15 points in SU s season-opening, 22-3, win against Providence. Nims tallied a career-best eight points and tied his career high with five assists. Keogh notched a personal-best five goals and seven points against the Friars. Either Nims or Keogh recorded a point on 12 of the team s 22 scores. Keogh netted four straight goals in the first and second quarters as part of a 15-0 Orange run that sealed the game. Nims assisted on two of Keogh s goals and four of Syracuse s five scores in the second quarter. NOTING SU S SEASON-OPENING WIN AGAINST PROVIDENCE The Orange began the 2009 campaign with a resounding 22-3 victory against Providence on Feb. 15 to improve its all-time record to (.800) in season-opening games. It is 31-9 in campaign starters since 1970 and has won 13 straight, including all 11 under head coach John Desko. Syracuse s 22 goals was the most for an SU squad in a season opener since it also tallied 22 against Virginia in the 1997 season starter. It also marked the most goals in an opener for the Orange under head coah John Desko. The team s offensive explosion was the third time the Orange reached the 20- goal plateau in an opener since Desko took over in SU defeated Rutgers, 20-13, in Desko s first game at the helm of the program and knocked off Villanova, 21-6, to start the 2008 season. The Orange s 19-goal win represented the largest margin of victory for Syracuse since it knocked off Michigan State by 20, 27-7, on March 10, It was also the Orange s largest margin of victory in a season-opening game since it defeated Cortland, 25-1, to begin the 1952 season. ALL-AMERICAN ORANGE Eight members of the Syracuse men s lacrosse team were named 2009 preseason All-Americans by Inside Lacrosse. Seniors Matt Abbott and Sid Smith were named to the fi rst team, while seniors Kenny Nims and Dan Hardy were picked to the second team. In addition, sophomore Joel White was a third-team selection and senior Pat Perritt, junior Cody Jamieson and sophomore John Lade were honorable mention choices. The Orange s eight honorees were the most for a Division I school. Abbott (third team), Smith (honorable mention), Nims (honorable mention) and Hardy (honorable mention) all earned USILA All-America honors following the 2008 season. FOUR ELECTED TEAM CAPTAINS FOR 2009 Seniors Matt Abbott, Kenny Nims, Pat Perritt and Spencer Van Schaack have been elected captains for the 2009 season in a vote by their teammates. All four players are serving the role for the first time. Abbott s father, Tom, was also an SU team captain (1978). The Abbotts are believed to be the second father-son captain combination in program history (Roy Simmons Sr./Roy Simmons Jr.). COACHING STAFF BLEEDS ORANGE All four members of the Syracuse coaching staff played lacrosse for the Orange under legendary mentor Roy Simmons Jr. Head coach John Desko, assistant coach Roy Simmons III and volunteer assistant Kevin Donahue were teammates at SU in the late 1970 s and were members of SU s first NCAA Tournament squad in Desko and Donahue were senior co-captains that year. Assistant coach Lelan Rogers played two years for the Orange ( ) before joining the staff as a graduate assistant from In addition to every member of the men s staff, Syracuse University also produced current women s head coach Gary Gait. Gait led the Orange to three NCAA Championships and has since become a lacrosse icon The number of times SU has won at least 10 games in a season. The 2008 season marked the 89th season of Orange men s lacrosse. ORANGE ON THE SMALL SCREEN The Orange men s lacrosse team will make three national television appearances this season. Its game against Princeton in the inaugural Inside Lacrosse Big City Classic on Saturday, April 4 and its match at Loyola on Saturday, March 28 will both air live on ESPNU. The Loyola game will also be available on WMAR-TV in Baltimore. In addition, the Orange will make an appearance on CBS College Sports when it plays at Massachusetts on April 25. Syracuse has also partnered with Time Warner Sports (Ch. 26 in Syracuse) to televise each of the team s 10 regular-season home games live. BIG EAST CONFERENCE TO FORM IN 2010 On June 11, 2008, BIG EAST commissioner Michael Tranghese announced that the league will formally begin sponsorship of men s lacrosse beginning in The announcement came after a unanimous vote by the league s 16 Directors of Athletics. The seven-school alliance will consist of Syracuse, Georgetown, Notre Dame, Rutgers, St. John s, Providence and Villanova. The teams will play a six-game round-robin regular-season schedule and the BIG EAST will apply for an automatic bid to the 16-team NCAA Championship field SEASON REWIND - CHAMPIONSHIP EDITION The Orange completed one of the most remarkable turnarounds in lacrosse history on May 26, 2008, defeating Johns Hopkins, 13-10, to win its NCAA-record 10th national title. Throughout his tenure, he has maintained the winning tradition that is Orange lacrosse. Since replacing Hall of Fame coach Roy Simmons Jr. in 1999, Desko has kept the Orange in the hunt for an NCAA title each and every year and he has brought home the national championship trophy four times (2000, 2002, 2004, 2008). In the process, Desko established a successful leadership style recognized by many in the lacrosse world. His legacy of achievement led to his selection as the USILA Division I Coach of the Year in 2008 and his being named the head coach of the 2006 U.S. National Team that competed at the ILF World Championship. They are just two of many honors bestowed upon Desko during his sparkling career. Throughout his tenure, Desko has coached some of the greatest players ever to don a lacrosse jersey and he has left an indelible mark on the history of the game. 2008: A Season to Remember Desko engineered one of the most impressive turnarounds the sport has ever seen in After going 5-8 and missing the postseason in 2007, he led the Orange to its record 10th NCAA crown and a 16-2 overall record. The title was Desko s fourth since taking over the program in 1999, putting him in exclusive company as one of only three Division I head coaches to win at least four NCAA titles. In addition, the Orange tied the NCAA record for the best one-year win-loss improvement (+8.5), and its 16 victories matched the school record. Desko s squad was second in the nation in scoring offense (13.61) and posted the program s lowest goals-against average since 1970 (7.62). During the regular-season, the Orange reeled off 10 straight wins and went undefeated at the Carrier Dome (9-0). The winning streak was SU s longest under Desko and represented the program s most consecutive victories since Syracuse fi nished the regular season 12-2 and secured the third seed in the NCAA Tournament. Building on its regular-season success, the team rolled to four straight wins in the postseason, including a victory against Johns Hopkins in the title game. On its way to the crown, Syracuse defeated three consecutive top-five opponents and bested second-seeded Virginia, 12-11, in double overtime in one of the most memorable semifi nal games in tournament history. In addition to his fourth championship, Desko capped the year by winning the F. Morris Touchstone Award as the USILA Division I Coach of the Year for the fi rst time. He joins Simmons Jr. as the only two Orange mentors to earn the honor. Setting the Standard Desko owns the second-best winning percentage (.747) of any active NCAA Division I coach with at least fi ve years of experience and he holds the best winning percentage in the NCAA Championship of any coach in the history of college lacrosse (.821). He s achieved those marks by recruiting and developing some of the best lacrosse players in the world. Since he accepted the head coaching reins, Syracuse has had 35 players earn a total of 63 All-America nods, including four-time honorees Mike Powell, Mike Springer and Mike Leveille. Two of his charges (Mike Powell in 2002 and 2004 and Mike Leveille in 2008) went on to win the Tewaaraton Trophy as the nation s best player. Desko s leadership and longevity have been crucial to establishing the dynasty that is SU lacrosse. The Orange advanced to the national semifi nals each season for 22 straight years between 1983 and It was as much a refl ection upon Desko as anyone, considering he was the one person directly associated with the team for all 22 seasons. During the fi rst 16 years of the Final Four streak, he served as an assistant coach (he spent 19 seasons as an assistant at SU overall) and then led the team to the Final Four in each of his fi rst six years as head coach.

11 JOHN DESKO, HEAD COACH Success Leads to Opportunity Desko s coaching success has led him to additional opportunities outside Syracuse, including his appointment as U.S. National Team coach for the 2006 World Games where he led the squad to the silver medal. In addition, Desko served as a coach for the North in the annual North-South Senior All-Star Game at the University of Delaware in He is also a leader in the sport s administration. Desko served as a member of the NCAA Lacrosse Committee, a group that oversees and regulates rules, championships and other issues pertinent to the sport from The Heir Apparent When Roy Simmons Jr. retired in 1998, Desko was the perfect choice to continue the Orange s championship tradition. He spent 19 seasons as Simmons top assistant during a time when SU won six national championships and appeared in 16 consecutive Final Fours. Prior to becoming Simmons top lieutenant in 1980, Desko was a player for him from Upon his arrival on campus, Desko helped SU achieve its fi rst winning season (7-4) since As a sophomore in 1977, Desko and the Orange went 8-6 and scored a then school-record 238 goals. SU s fastest midfi elder his fi rst two seasons, Desko switched to defense as a junior and the Orange continued its winning ways. SU went 10-3 in 1978, and with Desko leading the way, held opponents to 104 goals, the lowest total in eight years. With just two seasons of experience on defense, Desko earned All-America honors in 1979 as he helped SU to a 10-5 record and the school s fi rst NCAA playoff berth. He served as team captain as a junior and senior, and the Orange s record improved in each of his four years on the squad. After his playing career ended, Desko joined Simmons staff and helped build one of the premier programs in collegiate lacrosse. In his 19 seasons as an assistant, the Orange compiled a record of (.842), was invited to the NCAA Tournament 18 times, reached the Final Four 16 consecutive times and won six national championships. Desko coordinated recruiting and served as co-director of the popular Syracuse University Lacrosse Camp, held each summer on campus. He recruited some of the best lacrosse players to ever play the game, including two-time National Player of the Year and Outstanding Midfi elder of the Year Gary Gait, two-time Outstanding Attackman of the Year Tim Nelson, four-time All- American Brad Kotz, three-time All-American Paul Gait, and the Powell brothers, the school s top three all-time leading scorers (Mike, Casey and Ryan). Desko received another local sports honor in 2008 when he was inducted into the Greater Syracuse Sports Hall of Fame in a ceremony at Drumlins Country Club. Desko s two younger brothers, Dave and Jeff, were also All-American lacrosse players at Syracuse, and his son, Tim, is the latest member of the family to join the program. Tim is an attackman and also takes faceoffs for the Orange. John, his wife, Cindy, their sons, Tim and Ryan, and daughters, Nicole and Casey, all live in Syracuse.

Top-ranked Syracuse looked in mid-season form as it crushed Providence by the score of Twelve players recorded goals for SU, and its 22 tallies were its most in a seasonopener since 1997 when it notched 22 in a win against Virginia. Senior attackman Kenny Nims and sophomore attackman Stephen Keogh combined for 15 points in the victory. Nims tallied a career-best eight points and he matched his career high with five assists. Kenny Nims Stephen Keogh Keogh netted a career-high five goals, all in the first half, in his first collegiate start and recorded two assists to finish with a personal-best seven points. Redshirt freshman Tim Desko, who made his first career start on attack, recorded his first collegiate point with an assist as Keogh scored SU s first goal of the year at the 11:41 mark of the first quarter. Providence s Bobby Labadini tied the game on an unassisted goal with 5:53 to go in the opening stanza, but SU scored six goals in the final five minutes of the period to take a 7-1 lead. Three of SU s scores in the run were man-up goals, the result of a three-minute, nonreleasable penalty for an illegal stick called on Providence s Dean Fraser. Keogh scored the final three goals of the first quarter and netted his fourth in a row to start the second period. Syracuse outscored Providence 5-0 in the second period to take a 12-1 lead into the locker room. The hosts eventually extended their scoring run to 15-0 and led 16-1 with 3:17 to play in the third quarter. Labadini stopped the Orange scoring streak with his second goal of the afternoon at 1:28 of the third period, but the game was already well in hand. The Orange trailed, 3-1, after the first quarter, but outscored the Black Knights, 11-1, in the second and third quarters to cruise to the victory. Senior Kenny Nims was the Orange s leading scorer for the second straight game with three goals and three assists for six points. Classmate Dan Hardy tied his personal-best Kenny Nims Dan Hardy with five points, including a career-high three assists. Syracuse dominated the first period, winning four of the quarter s five faceoffs and holding an 18-4 advantage in ground balls and a 16-4 margin in shots. However, Army goaltender Tom Palesky made five saves to keep SU at bay early. Offensively, the Black Knights scored on two of their first three shots and led 3-1 after the first 15 minutes. After scoring once on 16 shots in the first period, the Orange found the cage four times on 10 attempts in the second. Top-ranked Syracuse from a five-goal deficit midway through the fourth quarter, but couldn t overtake No. 2 Virginia and lost in front of 16,595 fans at the Carrier Dome. SU scored four goals in the game s final five minutes, but the Cavaliers hung on for the win. Trailing 13-8, Syracuse got two goals from senior Kenny Nims, one from senior Dan Hardy and one from redshirt freshman Tim Kenny Nims Dan Hardy Desko in the span of 3:30 to pull within one goal with 1:18 left in the game. Sophomore goalie John Galloway had a career-high 19 saves and second-year attackman Stephen Keogh scored four of the Orange s eight goals as No. 2 Syracuse defeated No. 12 Georgetown, 8-5, in front of a sold-out crowd of 2,942 at Multi-Sport Field. In addition to his four goals, Keogh added an assist to finish with a game-high five points. Senior midfielder Matt Abbott tied his career high with three points (2g, 1a). Both of his goals came in a 3-0 Orange scoring run to close the game. John Galloway Stephen Keogh Galloway s performance keyed an Orange defense that held the Hoyas to just one goal in the first half and shut out Georgetown in the fourth quarter after the Hoyas rallied from a 5-3 deficit to tie the game at 5-5 on an unassisted goal by Todd Cochran with 45 seconds to go in the third. Cochran s score proved to be Hoyas last goal of the afternoon as the Orange turned to Abbott and Galloway down the stretch. Abbott s first goal gave SU a 6-5 cushion heading into the fourth quarter, and with SU leading, 7-5, on Keogh s fourth tally, Abbott notched the game s final goal with 9:25 left in regulation. That was all Galloway needed made six saves in the final quarter to secure the win. Galloway s fourth-quarter performance was the exclamation point on a terrific game which included 10 saves in the first half, nine of which came in the second quarter. In addition to Galloway, the Orange got a superb effort from close defenders Sid Smith, John Lade and Matt Tierney. They combined to hold Georgetown leading scorers Ricky Mirabito and Craig Dowd to just one point. SU s defensive effort helped negate a Georgetown advantage in shots and a 12-5 Hoya advantage at the faceoff X.
