Radio: UMassAthletics.com TV: CBS3 Now VIDEO: UMassAthletics.com Gametracker Live Stats: UMassAthletics.com SENIOR DAY AS NO. 19 TOWSON VISITS NO. 2 UMASS It s Senior Day at Garber Field on Saturday as the No. 2 UMass men s lacrosse team hosts No. 19 Towson for a CAA showdown. The Minutemen have won 9 straight games including all six at home, while the Tigers have won five consecutive including a one-goal come-back win against UMBC on Wednesday. A win for UMass would tie the program s best start to a season at 10-0 which was previously set by the 2001 and 1981 squads. The game will feature a pair of balanced offensive attacks as Towson has five players with 10-or-more points this season, while UMass has six led by Will Manny who has 48 (29g, 19a). Defensively, Towson will have to find a away past Tim McCormack, the NCAA s No. 2 goalie in terms of save percentage and No. 3 for goals-against average. Towson s Andrew Wascavage is a top-25 goalie highlighted by 17 saves on Wednesday against UMBC. The game will be televised in Western Mass on CBS3 Now with Adam Frenier and Norm Smith calling the action. A live video stream of home games and select road games will be available during the year through UMass All- Access which is a subscription based service. The streaming video works best on a high-speed internet connection. Monthly packages begin at $9.95 which includes all games from sponsored CBS College Sports-affiliated schools. Last Time Out: 15-3 Win Over Saint Joseph s For just the third time in program history, the No. 2 UMass men s lacrosse team improved to 9-0 on the season after a 15-3 win over Saint Joseph s on Saturday afternoon at Garber Field. The Minutemen started the 1981 and 2001 seasons with 9-0 records as well. Will Manny posted eight points on the day with three goals and five assists, while the UMass defense clamped down on the Hawks allowing a season-low three goals. Art Kell notched five points in the game with a pair of goals and five assists, while Anthony Biscardi tallied three goals and an assist. Connor Mooney and Colin Fellming each posted a pair of goals as well. The defense was led by Jake Smith who caused a pair of turnovers and collected four groundballs. Tim McCormack played 49 minutes, 47 seconds in goal making 11 saves while allowing no goals. Up Next: Battle At Bethpage vs. Drexel UMass and Drexel will square-off next Saturday at Bethpage High School on Long Island. With an abundance of Long Island natives on the UMass squad, the game promises to not only be a homecoming for the Minutemen players and coaches, but a weekend festival to celebrate the sport. The April 14 contest will see seven Minutemen make their hometown returns as well as the entire UMass coaching staff. Head coach Greg Cannella is a native of Lynnbrook which is just 17 miles away from Bethpage. This season, in 2003 and in 2001, the Minutemen were ranked No. 3 marking the previous high for a national rank. At 9-0, UMass and Loyola remain as the lone unbeaten squads in the NCAA. Manny Added To Tewaraaton Watch List After a blazing start to the season, Will Manny was one of three players to be added to the Tewaraaton Watch List in March. Statisically one of the top offensive players in the country, Manny leads the Minutemen in goals and assists showing his ability to set up others just as often as his own ability to score. Biscardi Named To Tewaraaton Watch List Anthony Biscardi was named one of 73 players on the 2012 Tewaraaton Watch List which was announced in mid-february. This is the second straight year the midfielder has been on the Watch List for college lacrosse s highest honor. Minutemen Picked 2nd In CAA On the heels of a 10-5 season in 2011 which saw the Minutemen advance to the CAA Championship game, UMass was picked to finish 2nd in the CAA Preseason Coaches Poll - just one point behind favorite Delware which won the league title last season. Hofstra was picked third - just one point behind UMass in what could shape up to be a terrific CAA season. Manny Picked As CAA Preseason Co-Player Of The Year Junior attack Will Manny was named the CAA Preseason Co-Player of the Year alongside Penn State goalie Austin Kaut. Manny is UMass top returning scorer from last season where he earned All-CAA Second Team and NEILA All-New England First-Team honors. Biscardi, Celentani Haul In Preseason Accolades Entering the season, Anthony Biscardi and Tom Celentani have both been in the forefront of preseason accolades from various outlets. The duo were both named to the CAA Preseason All-Conference Team alongside Will Manny. Both were also named to the Inside Lacrosse Preseason All-America Team. In the Major League Lacrosse Draft, Biscardi was taken by the Ohio Machine in the 2nd round, while Celentani was picked up by the Denver Outlaws in the 4th round. Biscardi was UMass third leading scorer a year ago with 20 goals and 10 assists. Of those 20 scores, three served as game-winners, while four came in man-up situations. A close defenseman, Celentani started all 15 games last year causing 22 turnovers while picking up 34 groundballs. As one of the top defensive players in the CAA, he earned second team honors. Offensive Firepower Junior Will Manny has points in 37 of his 38 career games and cracked the 100-point barrier with his threegoal, four-assist effort against Bucknell this season. Manny enters the Brown game with 78 career goals and 60 career assists in 38 games. He had scored in the first 25 games of his career to mark the longest streak on UMass among all active players before the streak was ended vs. Hofstra (4/23/11) in the ESPNU Warrior Classic. Junior Kyle Smith scored a career-high four goals in the win at Army including a pair of critical fourth quarter goals to seal the win. He had another great game against Bucknell with 3 goals and an assist. In 2011, he had at least one goal in eight of the last nine games -- that includes his two game-winners in overtime. He finished with 11 goals and 4 assists in his second college season. Senior Art Kell has been on fire lately with 17 goals and 10 assists over his last six games after starting the year with 1 goal and 3 assists. Junior Anthony Biscardi had points in 12 of 15 games last year with 10 multiple point games. Biscardi was third on the team in points with 30 on 20 goals and 10 assists. He had eight games with at least two goals in Tough Defense After posting a stout 8.33 goals-against-average last season, fifth-year senior Tim McCormack is backstopping the UMass defense to another outstanding campaign. In nine games, the Minutemen have yet to yield double-figure goals to opponents and have forced more turnovers in every game but three. For the year, UMass is forcing opponents into an average of 15.3 turnovers per game. Fellow close defenders Tom Celentani (12 groundballs, 10 caused turnovers) and Greg Anderson (13 groundballs, 1 caused turnovers) and Jake Smith (9 groundballs, 4 caused turnovers) anchor the nation s 4th-best ranked defensive unit. UMass man-down defense was strong in 2011, allowing just 21.2 percent on the year. Opponents had just 11 goals on 52 opportunities. That ranked 10th in the NCAA. UMass ranks 16th this year (tied with Harvard) allowing opponents to go 7-for-25 (72.0) on man-up advantages.

3 Face-Off Aces UMass tag-team duo of seniors Greg Rushing and Anthony Toresco were stellar on face-offs in 2011 winning 51.7 percent of of its draws to rank 21st in the NCAA. The pair continues to be successful for the Minutemen in Toresco leads UMass going 50-of-82 (61.0%) with 29 groundballs. Rushing is 19-of-36 (52.8%) on faceoffs with a team-best 33 groundballs. Toresco leads the CAA in faceoff win percentage and 12th nationally. As a team, UMass ranks 14th in the NCAA in faceoff win percentage (56.2%). The Legacy Of Overtime The Minutemen were heart-stoppers over the last month of the 2011 season winning back-toback overtime games in April as sophomore Kyle Smith scored two OT winners for the Minutemen. Then, Anthony Biscardi netted the game-winner in the CAA Semifinals to send UMass to the CAA Championship game vs. Delaware UMASS LACROSSE NOTES vs Harvard March 27, 2012 UMASS 2012 Honors Anthony Biscardi 2012 Tewaraaton Watch List 2012 Preseason All-American (Face-Off Magazine) 2012 All-CAA Preseason Team Tom Celentani 2012 Preseason All-American (Face-Off Magazine) 2012 All-CAA Preseason Team Overtime Wins Since 05 Art Kell 3/12/12 CAA Player of the Week Date Opponent Score GW/OTG Legacy 4/30/05 Syracuse W Jeff Zywicki Mike Fetterly 5/20/06 Hofstra W, Jim Connolly Dad Steve, 69 All-Amer. 3/19/12 CAA Player of the Week 3/31/07 Penn State W, 6-5 Brett Garber Dad Ted coached UMass Grandpa Dick, coached UMass Will Manny 4/12/08 Hobart W, 8-7 Peter McNichols 2012 CAA Co-Preseason Player Of The Year 4/11/09 Hobart W, 7-6 Jim Connolly Dad Steve, 69 All-Amer All-CAA Preseason Team 5/2/09 Rutgers W, Tim Balise 2/13/12 CAA Player of the Week 4/9/11 Towson W, 9-8 Kyle Smith Dad Norm, 77, 79 All-Am 2/13/12 UMass Athlete of the Week 4/16/11 Drexel W, Kyle Smith Dad Norm, 77, 79 All-Am 3/23/12 Tewaraaton Watch List Addition 5/4/11 at Penn St. W, 10-9 Anthony Biscardi 4/2/12 CAA Player of the Week 3/17/12 at Penn St. W, 9-8 Mike Fetterly 4/2/12 NEILA Player of the Week Smith scored in triple overtime as the Minutemen rallied to beat Drexel (4/16), UMass scored the final five goals of the game and held the Dragons off the board for the final 26:28. Smith scored the game-winner at Towson, 1:55 into overtime, giving UMass a 9-8 win over the Tigers. UMass has won nine of its last 10 games that have gone to overtime, winning every one since a 9-8 double-overtime loss to Yale (4/17/04) except a 10-9 loss to Albany (3/13/07). Penn State has been the most victimized team falling three times in that time span to UMass in overtime. Smith continued the history of UMass legacy players scoring overtime winners. Of UMass last eight overtime wins, five goals have been scored by players with family connections to UMass. Most OT Wins Over the last three years, here are teams with three overtime wins a in a season. UMASS Marist Canisius Army Lehigh Princeton Navy The most memorable was that 2006 NCAA Quarterfinal win over Hofstra as Jim Connolly -- who s father Steve Connolly was a captain of the 1969 UMass undefeated team -- scored the game-winner off a pass from Brett Garber, the son of former UMass coach Ted Garber and grandson of Dick Garber -- the former UMass coach, who was the first to win 300 games as a college lacrosse coach. - In 2007, Brett Garber scored the overtime winner to beat Penn State, 6-5 on March 30, at Garber Field, his grandfather s field. - In 2009, Connolly scored the game-winner to beat Hobart, 7-6 at Geneva. - Last season, Kyle Smith, son of former UMass All-American in the late 1970s Norm Smith, has scored two game-winners in overtime to beat Towson and Drexel. UMass played and won back-to-back overtime games -- the April 9-16 games -- for the first time since April 22-25, 1992 when UMass beat Harvard (7-6) and Rutgers (9-8). The three-overtime win over Drexel was UMass longest game since a five-overtime win over Cornell on March 30, That game equalled the longest in UMass history. UMass beat Cortland in 5OTs in Lucky Numbers 10, 11, 13 UMass has won 77 of its last 78 games when scoring 13 goals (98.6 win percentage), with three wins last season -- all on the road: 16-9 at Saint Joseph s (4/2), 14-6 at Providence (3/15) and at Hartford (2/19). UMass was 3-1 in 2010 year when tallying 13 or more. When scoring 11 goals or more, UMass has won 63 of its last 65 games, a 96.9 win percentage. Last season, UMass had six games with 11-plus goals, all wins. The Minutemen had at least 11 goals in the first eight games of the 2010 season with a 6-2 record. UMass had won 45 games in a row when scoring 11 or more goals until falling at Yale, on March 5, The Minutemen also lost to Harvard, last season on March 13, marking the most goals UMass scored in a loss since a defeat to Delaware on April 15, UMass had won 67 games in a row when scoring 13 or more goals. UMass is 54-3 in its last 57 games when scoring double-figures, (94.3 win percentage). UMass was a perfect 7-0 last year when reaching 10, with wins over Hartford, Ohio State, Providence, Saint Joseph s, Drexel, Delaware and Penn State.
