2 56 Game 1 #5 Johns Hopkins-14, Manhattan-3 February 19, 2010 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD Senior attackman Steven Boyle scored a career-high six goals and totaled a personal-best eight points and the fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team held visiting Manhattan scoreless for the first 53:12 as the Blue Jays opened the 2010 season with a 14-3 win over the Jaspers at chilly Homewood Field Friday evening. Hopkins scored all 14 of its goals in the first three quarters before Manhattan scored three unanswered to close the game. Boyle had a hand in seven of JHU s first nine goals as he scored five times and handed out both of his assists in the first 32 minutes of the game. He scored back-to-back unassisted goals in the first seven minutes to give the Blue Jays a 2-0 lead before Mike Maydick and Michael Kimmel scored back-to-back goals in a seven-minute span to push the lead to 4-0 early in the second quarter. While the Blue Jay defense was limiting the Jaspers to three combined shots in the second and third quarters, Boyle helped put the game away as he counted three goals and two assists on JHU s five goals after Kimmel s tally. He sandwiched assists on goals by Nate Matthews and Hunter Rodgers around his third goal of the game to make it 7-0 at the half and needed just 96 seconds of the third quarter to added two more goals to make it 9-0. Hopkins added five more goals in the final six minutes of the third quarter to make it 14-0 after three periods. Included was the first career goal by freshman Zach Palmer, two more by Matthews and goals 60-seconds apart by Boyle and sophomore Will McCance. Manhattan s James Synowiez sandwiched a pair of extra-man goals around a tally by Tyler Sabens in the final 6:47 to account for the final scoring. The Jaspers took 16 of their 23 shots, grabbed 11 of their 24 ground balls and earned three of their five faceoff wins in the fourth quarter. Junior Jon Fiorillo, made his first career start in goal for the Jaspers and totaled 12 saves. Senior Michael Gvozden registered five saves in 47 minutes of action for Johns Hopkins before giving way to sophomore Steven Burke, who posted four saves while allowing three goals over the final 13 minutes. Johns Hopkins allowed just seven shots and forced 19 turnovers in the first three quarters. The 53:12 the Blue Jays held the Jaspers scoreless is the longest single-game shutout streak for Johns Hopkins under head coach Dave Pietramala. The previous long was 49:11 against Mount St. Mary s in Boyle had twice scored four goals in a game and his previous career-high of seven points came in a 15-7 win against Navy last season. Matthews tallied the first hat trick of his career and Kimmel added an assist to go along with his second quarter goal. The Blue Jays held commanding advantages in shots (40-23), ground balls (45-24) and faceoffs (15-of-20). Senior Michael Powers and junior Matt Dolente were an identical 7-of-9 on faceoffs for the Blue Jays. Johns Hopkins improved to 8-2 in season-openers under Pietramala, who picked up career victory number 130 with the win. Attendance: 1,400 BALTIMORE, MD The fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team got a 9-1 run that bridged the second and fourth quarters and midfielder Michael Kimmel and attackmen Steven Boyle and Kyle Wharton combined for 11 goals and six assists to pace a 15-7 win over 13th-ranked Delaware at Homewood Field Tuesday evening. The win improves JHU s record to 2-0 this season and 7-0 all-time against the Blue Hens, who slip to 2-1 with the loss. The Blue Jays led just 6-4 after a John Austin goal for Delaware with 6:53 remaining in the second quarter before Boyle ignited the 9-1 run with the first of his four goals on the night. Boyle s goal was the last scored in the first half, which ended with Hopkins holding a 7-4 lead despite being outshot in the first two periods. JHU s high-scoring trio then took over. Kimmel drew a double-team at the top of the box and quickly fed senior Max Chautin for his first goal of the season less than two minutes into the third quarter and Boyle and Wharton struck less than two minutes apart a short time later to extend the lead to 10-4 midway through the period. A Martin Cahill goal with 3:48 remaining in the period halted the 4-0 run, but the Blue Jays struck for five goals in a span of just over four minutes midway through the fourth quarter to extend the lead to Kimmel again ignited the spree as he threaded a pass to Boyle on the backdoor for a man-up goal with 10:44 remaining before freshmen John Ranagan and Zach Palmer struck for unassisted goals less than 90 seconds apart to make it A laser from Wharton with 6:29 left was followed eight seconds later by Boyle s fourth of the game off a feed from junior Eric DiProspero to account for JHU s final goal. Delaware got two more goals from Cahill in the final six minutes the second of which came on the extra-man to account for the 15-7 final score. Hopkins led 2-0, 4-2 and 6-3 before Austin tallied the goal that drew the Hens to within 6-4 midway through the second quarter. That two-goal margin held for more than three minutes before Boyle s seventh goal of the season ignited the decisive 9-1 run for the Blue Jays. In a game that saw the Blue Jays get at least a point from nine different players, it was Kimmel s three goals and personal-best four assists for a career-high seven points that led the way. Boyle, who opened the season with an eight-point showing against Manhattan, added four goals and one assist, while Wharton matched those totals for a five-point effort of his own. The five-point showing matched Wharton s career high. Senior Michael Gvozden led the Blue Jay defense as he posted 12 saves. JHU held the Blue Hens leading scorer, senior Curtis Dickson, to just one goal. Dickson entered the game with 11 goals and four assists in two games. Cahill led the Blue Hens with four goals and fellow midfielder Kevin Kaminski added one goal and one assist, but no other Delaware player managed more than one point and the Hens connected on just 7-of-40 shots in the game. Attendance: 575 BALTIMORE, MD Senior midfielder Michael Kimmel scored an extra-man goal with 48 seconds remaining to break a 7-7 tie and lift the fifth-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team to an 8-7 win over visiting Siena at Homewood Field Sunday afternoon. The win, the ninth straight in the regular season for the Blue Jays, improves JHU s record to 3-0 on the year. The Saints slip to 0-2 with the loss. Hopkins held a three-goal lead early in the third quarter and still led by a score of 7-5 with less than six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter before Siena s Chris Roth struck for back-to-back goals in a span of just over 80 seconds to draw the Saints even. He was on the back-end of some quick ball movement and was able to get his hands free for a 10-yarder that skipped home and added his second straight goal a short time later after sweeping across the top of the box and getting a step on his defender before letting go with the game-tying goal with 4:21 remaining. Both teams had chances down the stretch, but it was a failed Siena clear that eventually led to Kimmel s game-winner. After forcing the failed clear, junior Kyle Wharton found senior Steven Boyle alone 10 yards in front of the goal, where he was pushed from behind by Siena goalie Brent Herbst. Herbst was assessed a 30-second penalty and Kimmel scored 29 seconds into the man advantage on a nice skip pass from Boyle. Siena had one final possession in the Blue Jay end of the field, but turned the ball over and JHU was able to kill the last few seconds. After a scoreless first quarter that saw the teams combine for twice as many turnovers (18) as shots (9), Siena broke through just 32 seconds into the second quarter on an unassisted goal by Chris D Alberti. Wharton answered just 12 seconds later and Boyle scored the first of his three goals on the day just over three minutes after that to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 lead. Siena s John Rogener and Boyle traded goals midway through the second quarter to account for a 3-2 halftime lead for the Blue Jays, who then got back-to-back goals from freshman John Ranagan and senior Tom Duerr in the first four minutes of the third quarter to make it 5-2. Ranagan worked his way through traffic and 2011 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Guide 39 Straight NCAA Tournaments 9 NCAA Championships

3 beat Herbst while falling to the ground, while Duerr s polished off an extra-man opportunity with his first goal of the season. D Alberti, Rogener and Bryan Neufeld all scored in the final 9:09 of the third period for Siena, goals that were matched only by a Boyle tally during that stretch for the Blue Jays. Neufeld s goal came with just one second remaining in the third quarter and made it 6-5, but Kimmel scored the first of his two fourth-quarter goals just over two minutes into the period to make it 7-5. That score held for nearly seven minutes before Roth s back-to-back goals set the stage for Kimmel s game-winner. Boyle led the Blue Jays with three goals and one assist, while Kimmel (2g) and Wharton (1g, 1a) also registered multi-point games. Senior Michael Gvozden posted nine saves in goal for the Blue Jays. D Alberti, Rogener and Roth were the only multi-point scorers for Siena as they each scored two goals, while Herbst matched Gvozden s nine saves in goal for Siena. Game 4 Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic #7 Princeton-11, #5 Johns Hopkins-10 (OT) March 6, 2010 M&T Bank Stadium BALTIMORE, MD Scott MacKenzie scored his only goal of the game 59 seconds into overtime to lift seventh-ranked Princeton to an victory over fifthranked Johns Hopkins in the second game of the 2010 Konica Minolta Face-Off Classic at Baltimore s M&T Bank Stadium. The win, Princeton s second straight against the Blue Jays, lifts the Tigers to 2-0 on the season, while Johns Hopkins slips to 3-1 and had its nine-game regular-season winning streak snapped. Princeton appeared to have the game in hand with possession late in the fourth quarter behind the Blue Jay goal on a restart, but Blue Jay goalie Michael Gvozden forced a turnover and, after a scramble at midfield, senior midfielder Michael Kimmel came up with a ground ball, carried into the Princeton zone with a full head Siena (0-2) /7 #5 Johns Hopkins (3-0) /8 Goals: S: D Alberti-2, Roth-2, Rogener-2, Neufeld. As it would turn out, the Blue Jays never had possession again. Princeton won the faceoff after Kimmel s goal, but couldn t score in the final seconds, but the Tigers won the only faceoff in overtime and worked the ball to junior Jack McBride at the top of the box to Gvozden s right. He skipped a pass through traffic to MacKenzie, who was parked just above the goal line to Gvozden s left. With time and room, he stepped into a shot and slipped it just inside the near post for the game-winner. Princeton led 7-4 at the half as McBride scored all three of his goals before halftime and the Tigers held the Blue Jays scoreless for the final 18:50 before the break. After Hopkins took a 4-3 lead on a Nate Matthews goal with 3:50 remaining in the first quarter, Jack McBride and Chris McBride scored back-to-back goals to give Princeton a 5-4 lead early in the second quarter. A Tyler Moni goal 31 seconds after Jack McBride s tally made it 6-4 and Jack McBride accounted for the 7-4 halftime score. It took more than five minutes for the Blue Jays to gain an offensive possession in the third quarter, but they then needed less than two minutes after that to pull within one as attackmen Kyle Wharton and Tom Duerr struck for back-to-back goals midway through the period to draw the Blue Jays to within 7-6. An opportunisitic Jeff Froccaro goal for Princeton he swept in a loose ball in front of the goal after a nifty Gvozden save - gave the Tigers a two-goal lead back, but JHU answered seven seconds later on Steven Boyle s 14th goal of the season and senior midfielder Max Chautin used a nice hesitation dodge from the side to get inside his defender and handcuffed Fiorito from seven yards out to draw the Blue Jays even at 8-8. Frocarro, who scored three goals last week, added his third and fourth goals of the game to give the Tigers a 10-8 lead with less than six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but JHU freshman Zach Palmer tallied a highlight-reel backhanded goal with 4:44 remaining and Kimmel fired home the game-tying goal just over four minutes later. That set the stage for MacKenzie s game-winner, which gave Princeton its first back-to-back wins against Johns Hopkins since 2000 and Froccaro led Princeton with four goals and grabbed eight of the Tigers 24 ground balls while winning 10-of-17 faceoffs. Jack McBride added three goals and one assist and Rob Engelke chipped in with three assists for the Tigers, who also got eight saves from Fiorito and held advantages in shots (37-27), ground balls (24-23) and faceoffs (13-12). Boland and Duerr led the Blue Jays with two goals apiece, while Kimmel (1g, 2a) and Boyle (1g, 1a) were also multi-point scorers for the Blue Jays. Gvozden posted 10 saves for the Blue Jays, who out-scored Princeton 6-3 in the second half, but never led again after Matthews goal late in the first quarter was answered by Jack McBride s goal with one second remaining in the period. Game 5 #7 Johns Hopkins-16, UMBC-10 March 9, 2010 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team had four players record hat tricks and the Blue Jays outscored UMBC 6-1 over the final 20 minutes to fuel a victory over the visiting Retrievers at Homewood Field Tuesday night. The win, JHU s eighth all-time against UMBC without a defeat, UMBC (1-3) /10 #7 Johns Hopkins (4-1) /16 Goals: U: Stockton-3, Kimbles-2, Grimm-2, Wimer, Ryznar, Latham. Attendance: 1,129 improves the Blue Jays record to 4-1 on the year, while UMBC dropped its second straight and falls to 1-3. Johns Hopkins led just 10-9 after Rob Grimm polished off a quick three-goal run for UMBC with his third goal of the season with 7:13 remaining in the third quarter. The one-goal lead held for just under three minutes before freshman Zach Palmer ignited a 5-0 run for the Blue Jays with the first of his three goals in a 10-minute span. Palmer took a feed from junior Kyle Wharton high in the slot, spun and dropped down to open the game-turning spree, which included a transition goal from Wharton, back-to-back goals by senior Michael Kimmel in a span of just over a minute, and another goal from Palmer on quick-stick after a nice feed from senior Steven Boyle. Grimm and Palmer traded goals late in the fourth quarter to account for the final scoring. In a wild first half that saw 14 goals and seven penalties, Johns Hopkins never trailed, but could never quite distance itself from the Retrievers either. The Blue Jays led by scores of 4-2, 6-3 and 7-4, only to have the Retrievers get back-to-back goals from Jamie Kimbles and Bobby Stockton in a span of 37 seconds late in the second quarter to pull within 7-6. A opportunistic goal by Boyle, who scooped up and deposited the loose change after a save by sophomore goalie Brian Mc- Cullogh, with 1:03 remaining in the first half accounted for an 8-6 halftime score. The Blue Jays quickly pushed the two-goal lead to four as senior Max Chautin and Wharton notched extra-man goals in the first 47 seconds of the third quarter, but Shane Ryzner and Stockton scored two minutes apart midway through the period and Grimm s goal with 7:13 remaining capped the three-goal run that sliced what was a 10-6 deficit to The first of Palmer s three goals came three minutes later and ignited the game-ending run for the Blue Jays. Boyle continued his torrid early-season scoring as he totaled three goals and added four assists, while Palmer, Wharton and Kimmel all totaled three goals and two assists for the Blue Jays, who got eight goals and six assists from their starting attack and seven goals and four assists from their first midfield. Senior Michael Gvozden posted 11 saves in goal for the Blue Jays, who cashed in on 5-of-6 extra-man chances and scored on 16-of-31 shots in the game. Stockton led UMBC with three goals and one assist, while Kimbles (2g, 1a) and 57

4 Grimm (2g) also scored two goals for the Retrievers. McCullough posted eight saves in his first career start for the Retrievers, who held advantages in shots (35-31) and ground balls (32-28), but never tied the game after Hopkins pulled out to a 4-2 lead midway through the first quarter. Game 6 #10 Hofstra-14, #7 Johns Hopkins-6 March 13, 2010 Shuart Stadium HEMPSTEAD, NY The 10th-ranked Hofstra men s lacrosse team used a six-goal run to pull away from visiting Johns Hopkins in the second half and the Pride went on to post a 14-6 victory over the Blue Jays at rain and wind-swept Shuart Stadium Saturday evening. The win improves Hofstra s record to 2-1, while the Blue Jays slip to 4-2 with the loss. The Pride put the game away with the six-goal run after the Blue Jays had sliced a 6-2 halftime deficit to 6-4 in less than 90 seconds early in the third quarter. Jamie Lincoln answered the mini-run by Johns Hopkins when he swept across the top of the box and took a quick pass from Jay Card and blew one inside the near post. The 7-4 lead held until the final five minutes of the period, when the Pride added two goals by Stephen Bentz and a final goal by Mike Skudin with just 1.2 seconds remaining to push the lead to 10-4 entering the final quarter. #7 Johns Hopkins (4-2) /6 #10 Hofstra (2-1) /14 Goals: J: Boyle-2, Duerr-2, Kimmel, Greeley. Attendance: 1,245 The Blue Jays fell behind 4-1 at the end of the first quarter and trailed 6-2 at the half as the Pride scored in settled offense, in transition and with a two-man advantage in the first 30 minutes. A Mike DeNapoli goal less than five minutes into the first quarter opened the scoring, but was answered less than a minute later by Blue Jay senior Tom Duerr, who slipped through traffic from the side and slipped a fiveyarder past Hofstra goalie Rob Bellairs. Hofstra got back-to-back goals from Lincoln and Card in a span of just 21 seconds midway through the quarter and Johns Hopkins head coach Dave Pietramala inserted Steven Burke in goal for the Blue Jays after Card s goal. DeNapoli s second goal, which came on a quick restart after the Blue Jays were called for offsides, came less than two minutes later, but Burke proved his mettle early in the second quarter when he stuffed Card in-tight while the Pride were playing a man down and Duerr buried an extra-man goal a short time later to make it 4-2. The Pride got a goal by Adrian Sorichetti while up two men with 4:54 remaining in the first half and Lincoln blew one home from 12 yards out at the top of the box less than two minutes later to close the first-half scoring. A 12-yard laser by senior Michael Kimmel 36 seconds into the third quarter sliced the deficit to 6-3 and John Greeley s first career goal less than a minute later made it 6-4, but Lincoln s goal three minutes later ignited the game-turning run, which lifted the Pride to their third straight win against Hopkins at home. Lincoln led the Pride with five goals and three assists, while Card added two goals and a game-high four assists. The Pride held advantages in shots (34-19) and ground balls (28-22) and converted on 3-of-4 extra-man chances. Senior Steven Boyle led the Blue Jays with two goals and one assist. Note: The game was delayed 14 minutes in the first quarter when the high winds knocked the power out at the stadium. Game 7 #2 Syracuse-10, #7 Johns Hopkins-7 March 20, 2010 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The second-ranked Syracuse men s lacrosse team jumped to an 8-1 third-quarter lead and held off a late rally by seventh-ranked Johns Hopkins as the Orange picked up a 10-7 win before 6,504 fans at Homewood Field Saturday evening. The win, the fourth straight for Syracuse over Johns Hopkins, runs the Orange record to 4-1 on the the year. The Blue Jays dropped their second straight and slip to 4-3. Senior Max Bartig fueled the 8-1 run to open the game for the Orange as he opened the scoring less than three minutes into the game and later added back-toback goals in the first seven minutes of the third quarter to push a 5-1 halftime lead to 7-1. Junior Stephen Keogh s second goal of the game made it 8-1 less than a minute after Bartig s third goal of the game, but JHU, which had been held off the board for more than 23 minutes, rallied. Senior Steven Boyle sandwiched a pair of goals around a tally by freshman Zach Palmer and sophomore Tom Palasek scored on a nifty dodge from the side to slice the deficit to 8-5 less than 90 seconds into the fourth quarter. The Blue Jays hopes for a comeback were dashed just nine seconds after Greeley s goal as Joel White scooped up the ground ball on the ensuing faceoff and raced into the Blue Jay zone, where he got his hands free from eight yards out to the left of Blue Jay goalie Michael Gvozden and blew home his first goal of the season. The story of the game was the performance of the Syracuse defense, which kept the Blue Jays away from the goal for nearly three full quarters before the late-game rally. Junior John Galloway posted nine saves, including seven in the second half two of which came on back-to-back shots from in close in the first 90 seconds of the third quarter. What could have been a 5-2 deficit for the Blue Jays if either of those two shots go was instead a 6-1 hole when Bartig scored at the 13:37 mark. Bartig led the Orange with his three goals, while Thompson and Keogh added two goals apiece. Senior Cody Jamieson added one goal and three assists for Syracuse, which held advantages in shots (37-26), groundballs (36-25) and faceoffs (14-of-20). Boyle totaled two goals and two assists, while Greeley and Palasek s two-goal games were the first of their career. Gvozden was solid goal for the Blue Jays as he posted 14 saves, including several of the highlight-reel variety. Game 8 #1 Virginia-15, #12 Johns Hopkins-6 March 27, 2010 Klockner Stadium 58 SWERZ CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA The top-ranked Virginia men s lacrosse team broke open a close game in the second quarter with a five-goal run that bridged the first and second halves and later scored four straight in a five-miunte span as the Cavaliers went on to a 15-6 victory over 12th-ranked Johns Hopkins in front of an overflow crowd at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers move to 9-0 on the year with the victory, while Johns Hopkins dropped its third straight and slips to 4-4 with the loss. The Cavaliers jumped out to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first quarter and pushed the lead to 4-1 on a goal by Colin Briggs just under four minutes into the second quarter before the Blue Jays hopped back in the game with a three-goal run that took less than two minutes. Sophomore Tom Palasek picked up where he left off 2011 Johns Hopkins Men s Lacrosse Guide 39 Straight NCAA Tournaments 9 NCAA Championships

5 last week against Syracuse as he netted the first two goals in the three-goal flurry. After scoring on the backend of a possession off an assist from senior Steven Boyle, he dodged hard to the goal and beat Virginia goalie Adam Ghitelman from in tight to make it 4-3. When freshman John Ranagan scored on an ally dodge 70 seconds later the Blue Jays had drawn even and appeared to have grabbed the momentum. Any hopes of pulling off the upset were dashed over the next 11 minutes as the Cavaliers went on one of their patented runs this one a five-goal spree that gave them a 9-4 lead early in the third quarter. The run included a pair of goals by junior Rhamel Bratton and one each by Chris Bocklet, Matt White and Brian Carroll. A Kyle Wharton goal for the Blue Jays five minutes after Carroll s goal halted the run, but Carroll answered just under three minutes later and George Hugeuly and Shamel Bratton scored in the final three minutes of the period to push the lead to 12-5 at the end of the third quarter and the outcome was never in doubt in the final period. Freshman Lee Coppersmith added the first goal of his career in the fourth quarter for the Blue Jays, but the Cavaliers got another goal from Shamel Bratton and strikes by White and Nick O Reilly to account for the final scoring. Carrol (2g, 3a) and Shamel Bratton (3g, 2a) led the Cavaliers with five-point games and Rhamel Bratton added three goals to help pace an offense that scored at least three goals in each quarter. Ghitelman posted 10 saves for the Cavaliers, who held advantages in shots (43-32) and ground balls (36-22) and forced 18 Blue Jay turnovers. Palasek was the only multi-goal scorer for the Blue Jays and Ranagan (1g, 1a) was the only other player who posted more than one point for Hopkins. Michael Gvozden posted fives in goal before being lifted with just under 19 minutes remaining. Freshman Pierce Bassett played the final 18:41 in goal and posted four saves while allowing five goals. Game 9 #3 North Carolina-11, #14 Johns Hopkins-7 April 3, 2010 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The third-ranked North Carolina men s lacrosse team got a game-high four goals from junior Billy Bitter and the visiting Tar Heels outscored Johns Hopkins 5-2 in the second half as UNC posted an 11-7 victory before 4,012 fans at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The win is the fourth straight for North Carolina against Johns Hopkins and the Tar Heels improve to 10-0 for the first time since 1991 with the victory. Johns Hopkins dropped its fourth straight and slips to 4-5. After a back-and-forth first half that saw the Tar Heels take a 6-5 lead into intermission, UNC got some breathing room with a pair of goals in a two-minute span early in the third quarter. A Jimmy Dunster goal off an ally dodge opened the second-half scoring for the Heels, who added an extra man goal by Gavin Petracca a short time later to make it 8-5. As is turned out, JHU was never closer than two in the final 26 minutes. The 8-5 lead held until JHU s Kyle Wharton scored on a behind-theback bouncer with 4:03 remaining in the third quarter, but the momentum was short-lived five seconds to be exact. After a procedure call on the ensuing faceoff gave possession to the Tar Heels, Michael Burns raced into the offensive zone and blew home his fourth goal of the game to make it 9-6. North Carolina jumped out to a 3-2 lead at the end of the first quarter as Bitter scored three times in the first 10 minutes. Wharton had opened the scoring with his 11th goal of the year just over two minutes into the game, but Bitter answered with an unassisted strike just over three minutes later and added his second goal 32 seconds after that off an assist from Dunster. Senior Max Chautin drew the Blue Jays even midway through the period when he pinged one home off the post, but Bitter s opportunistic goal a short time later made it 3-2. Ranagan rang one off the post with 5:20 remaining in the opening period, only to have the ball shoot back to midfield, where Bitter scooped up the ground ball and out-raced the Blue Jay defense into the offensive zone, where he bounced one home from eight yards out. Hopkins grabbed a 4-3 lead early in the second quarter on back-to-back goals by senior Steven Boyle and Wharton, but Ian Braddish, Chris Layne and Marcus Holman all scored in a five-minute span midway through the period to give UNC a 6-4 lead. A Chautin goal with 2:59 remaining in the first half accounted for the 6-5 halftime score, but Dunster s goal came 1:55 into the third quarter and the Tar Heels never let the Blue Jays make it a one-possession game down the stretch. Bitter s four goals led the Tar Heels, who also got one goal and one assist each from Dunster, Holman and Petracca. Chris Madalon posted nine saves in goal for North Carolina, which has held nine of its 10 opponents to seven goals or less. Wharton paced the Blue Jays with his eighth career hat trick, while Chautin posted the first two-goal game of his career. Freshman Pierce Bassett earned his first career start in goal for the Blue Jays and posted six saves. He is the first freshman to start a game in goal for Johns Hopkins since February 28, 2004, when Jesse Schwartzman started the season-opener against Penn. He is just the fifth true freshman to start in goal for Johns Hopkins since freshmen became eligible in Game 10 #15 Johns Hopkins-19, Albany-7 April 10, 2010 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team sprinted to a 7-1 halftime lead and had 13 different players score in a 19-7 victory over Albany before a Homecoming crowd of 4,508 at Homewood Field Saturday afternoon. The win snaps a four-game losing streak for the Blue Jays, who improve to 5-5 on the year and 8-1 all-time against the Great Danes. The 19 goals are the most for Johns Hopkins since April 3, 2006, when JHU defeated Mount St. Mary s, After spotting Albany (2-8) an early 1-0 lead, the Blue Jays held the Great Danes scoreless for the final 21 minutes of the first half and netted seven goals themselves during that time. Junior Kyle Wharton scored twice in the first half and Johns Hopkins eventually built the halftime lead to 9-1 with a pair of goals in the first 58 seconds of the third quarter. Four of JHU s first nine goals were scored by freshmen, including a pair by newcomer John Ranagan, and the Blue Jays scored in bunches during the first 31 minutes of the game. Hopkins needed just over two minutes to net its first three goals late in the first quarter, scored four more goals in a span of 2:11 midway through the second quarter and needed exactly 58 seconds to score twice to open the second half. #3 North Carolina (10-0) /11 #14 Johns Hopkins (4-5) /7 Goals: N: Bitter-4, Dunster, Petracca, Holman, Wood, Braddish, Burns, Layne. 6 60 Albany sliced into the 9-1 deficit with a 3-1 run midway through the third quarter that included an extra-man goal by Kyle Brunk and a man-down goal by Dave Brock, but freshman John Greeley scored his fourth goal of the season off a nice skip pass from Ranagan with 5:27 remaining in the third quarter to halt the Albany spree and the Danes were never closer than seven over the final 20 minutes of the game. After carrying a 12-4 lead into the fourth quarter, the Blue Jays outscored the Great Danes 7-2 over the final 15 minutes to account for the final scoring. Included in those seven goals were the first career goals for seniors Conor Cassidy and Zach Tedeschi and freshman Chris Lightner. On a day when the Blue Jays got nine goals and two assists from their freshman, it was Ranagan who led the way with three goals and one assist. The hat trick is the first of his career. Seniors Michael Kimmel and Steven Boyle added two goals and three assists apiece and Wharton (2g, 1a) and freshman Zach Palmer (2g) also netted a pair of goals for the Blue Jays, who held advantages in shots (46-31), ground balls (42-39) and faceoffs (16-of-29). Freshman Pierce Bassett made his second straight start in goal for the Blue Jays and posted eight saves while allowing six goals in just under 55 minutes of action. Brock led the Great Danes with two goals and one assist and Daley Baker scored twice, but Albany went more than 24 minutes without scoring after taking the early 1-0 lead and finished the first half with nearly as many turnovers (10) as shots (11) in falling behind 7-1 at halftime. John Carroll posted 15 saves in goal for the Great Danes before leaving the game with just over nine minutes remaining. He allowed 16 of JHU s 19 goals in the game. Game 11 Smartlink Day of Rivals #4 Maryland-10, #15 Johns Hopkins-9 April 17, 2010 M&T Bank Stadium BALTIMORE, MD The fourth-ranked Maryland men s lacrosse team used an 8-1 run that bridged the second and fourth quarters to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 9-5 lead and the Terps held off a furious late-game rally by 15th-ranked Johns Hopkins to post a 10-9 win over the Blue Jays in the second game of the Smartlink Day of Rivals at M&T Bank Stadium Saturday evening. Maryland improves to 8-2 with the win, while Johns Hopkins slips to 5-6 with the loss. Maryland trailed 4-1 less than 17 minutes into the game, but goals by Ryan Young and Adam Sear just over two minutes apart midway through the second quarter sliced the deficit to 4-3 at the half. The one-goal deficit could have been much worse, but Maryland was able to kill off six man-down situations in the opening 30 minutes a figure that would come back to haunt the Blue Jays in what was eventually the onegoal margin of defeat. The lead and any momentum the Blue Jays built in crafting the 4-1 lead were gone less than three minutes into the second half as junior Travis Reed scored from a nearly impossible angle along the goal line just 1:51 into the third quarter and sophomore Drew Snider added #4 Maryland (8-2) /10 #15 Johns Hopkins (5-6) /9 Goals: M: Catalino-2, Reed-2, Young, Yeatman, Sear, Bernhardt, Snider, Cummings. Senior Michael Kimmel used a hesitation move on a dodge of his own from the top of the box to knot the game at 5-5 six minutes later, but Maryland would score three straight extra-man goals in a span of just under six minutes to push out to an 8-5 lead less than a minute into the fourth quarter. Joe Cummings got the first of the three straight extra-man goals for Maryland with 4:55 remaining in the third quarter and Reed and Grant Catalino posted extraman markers in a 21-second span in the first minute of the fourth period. When Will Yeatman split a double team and bulled his way to goal and fired home his 12th of the year with 12:12 on the clock, it looked like the Terps might run away with it. The Blue Jays had other ideas and Maryland s attempt to run out the clock nearly cost the Terps. An extra-man goal by Steven Boyle just over a minute after Yeartman s tally made it 9-6 and sophomore Marshall Burkhart got to the middle of the field and fired home his first of the year four minutes later to make it 9-7. Maryland got what looked like it would be the insurance goal just eight seconds after Burkhart s goal as Jesse Bernhardt scooped up the loose ball on the ensuing faceoff, raced into the offensive zone and blew home his second goal of the GREELEY year to make it 10-7 with 6:56 remaining. The Terps had possession several times over the final seven minutes and tried to run out the clock, but Hopkins forced three turnovers in the final 2:30 and cashed in twice to make it interesting. Boyle s third goal of the game with 1:55 remaining made it a two-goal game and Kimmel capped off a slow developing transition opportunity 55 seconds later to make it 10-9 with exactly one minute remaining. The Terrapins won the ensuing faceoff and milked more than 40 seconds off the clock before freshman Tucker Durkin forced a turnover and senior Sam DeVore came up with the loose ball and raced up field. The Terps did a good job of cutting off the Blue Jay attack and with time winding down DeVore had the ball checked out of his stick and it rolled harmlessly away as the final seconds ticked away. A late-game rally didn t seem like it would be necessary in the first 17 minutes of the game as the Blue Jays their freshman class in particular struck early and built a pair of three-goal leads. Freshman John Ranagan opened the scoring off a nice cross-field dodge that never drew a slide from the Terps and classmate John Greeley scored off an assist from Ranagan just over five minutes later to make it 2-0. Boyle s first of the game came just under two minutes later off a nifty no-look pass from Kimmel to the doorstep, but Catalino answered with a one-timer from just off the crease off a nice feed from Young. Greeley added his second goal of the game also off an assist from Ranagan 69 seconds into the second quarter, but the Blue Jays went cold for the next 23 minutes. By the time Kimmel broke the scoreless drought with 5:51 remaining in the third quarter, the Terps had taken a 5-4 lead and would never trail again. Eight different players scored for Maryland with Catalino and Reed netting a pair to lead the way. Both added an assist to go along with their two goals. Young also added a three-point night as he had the one goal and two assists. Boyle paced the Blue Jays with his 14th career hat trick and he also became the 19th player in school history to reach the 150-point mark. He now now has 152 in his career. Kimmel (2g, 2a), Greeley (2g) and Ranagan (1g, 2a) also recorded multi-point games for the Blue Jays. 7 Navy s only goal of the fourth quarter came at the 9:39 mark as senior Patrick Moran blew home an extra-man goal home from 13 yards out. While neither team scored again until Warner s game-winner, it wasn t for a lack of chances. Navy s R.J. Wickham twice came up with big saves in the final nine minutes of regulation and Johns Hopkins Pierce Bassett stuffed Warner in tight less than a minute into overtime. Wickham then kicked aside a shot by Michael Kimmel with 2:39 remaining in overtime and Navy forced a Kimmel turnover 15 seconds later. Warner s goal came just over a minute after a Navy timeout and seconds after Nikk Davis missed an open net on a nifty back-door feed. The Blue Jays had hopped out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter as Kyle Wharton and Kimmel both scored a pair of goals and sophomore Tom Palasek added a goal of his own to spark the game-opening spree. Palasek and Wharton went back-toback in a span of 17 seconds late in the quarter to fuel the run, which ended with Kimmel s second goal with just 46 seconds remaining in the period. The Blue Jays outshot Navy 13-6 in the opening 15 minutes, but as quickly as they had crafted the five-goal lead, it was gone. The Midshipmen needed just 40 seconds of the second quarter to get on the board as Moran dodged hard to the goal and scored from in tight. The margin remained four until midway through the period when Navy erupted for three goals in a span of just under two minutes. Bucky Smith s first goal of the season started the three-goal flurry, which was capped by a Joe Lennon goal and included an own goal. A minute before Lennon actually scored his own goal, he was stopped by Basset on a drive to the cage from the side. Hopkins Matt Dolente tried to scoop up the loose ball, but instead directed it past Bassett just inside the far post. A Jay Mann goal with 2:30 remaining in the second quarter and the first of Connors two goals on the day with 43 seconds remaining accounted for a 6-5 Navy lead at the half. In keeping with the first half flow of the game, it was Hopkins turn to answer with another run of its own. Palasek slipped inside his defender and scored from in close with 11:30 remaining and senior Steven Boyle dodged from behind the goal and bounced one home to give the Blue Jays a 7-6 lead with 5:55 on the clock in the third quarter. Palasek completed the first hat trick of his career just over two minutes later, but that would be the last goal of the game for the Blue Jays, who went more than 19 minutes without scoring twice in the game. Navy got a team-high three points from Wanter (1g, 2a), while Moran and Connors both scored two goals to pace Navy offensively. Wickham, who entered the game ranked second nationally in save percentage, posted eight saves in goal and Navy held advantages in shots (40-32), ground balls (35-21) and faceoffs (13-of21). Johns Hopkins was led by Palasek s three goals, while Boyle (1g, 2a), Kimmel (2g) and Wharton (2g) also registered multi-point games for the Blue Jays, who got a career-high 14 saves from Bassett. Game 13 Johns Hopkins-13, #11 Towson-6 April 28, 2010 Homewood Field BALTIMORE, MD The Johns Hopkins men s lacrosse team jumped out to an 8-0 lead at the half and never looked back en route to a 13-6 win over 11th-ranked Towson at Homewood Field Wednesday evening. A transition goal by junior Matt Dolente opened the scoring in the second period, which also included another goal by Kimmel and unassisted goals by sophomore Tom Palasek and senior Steven Boyle. Palasek got inside his defender and dodged hard to the goal from the side, while Boyle dodged from behind the goal and bounced home the first of his two goals on the night. Towson broke through with its first goal of the game on a nice individual effort by Carl Iacona with 11:39 remaining in the third quarter, but the Blue Jays answered with goals by Palasek and Boyle midway through the quarter to push the margin out to The Tigers sliced the deficit to 10-4 with three straight goals bridging the third and fourth quarters, but the Blue Jays answered with a three-goal run of their own to make it 13-4 before the Tigers added a pair of late goals to account for the final scoring. Kimmel led a balanced Johns Hopkins offense with three goals and one assist, while Boyle added two goals and three assists. Wharton and Palasek both chipped in two goals and one assist for the Blue Jays, who also got 12 saves in goal from freshman Pierce Bassett. The hat trick was the 11th of Kimmel s career. Stephen Norris was the only multi-goal scorer for the Tigers, who fell for the 15th straight time to Johns Hopkins and the 35th time in 38 all-time meetings. 8 6-1 JHU run that turned a 3-3 tie late in the second quarter into a 9-4 Hopkins lead midway through the fourth. The first of Chris Hurst s three goals tied the game at 3-3 with 6:25 remaining in the first half, but a 15-yard laser by senior Dave Spaulding just over 30 seconds later and an extra-man goal by Wharton with just over three minutes remaining in the half gave the Blue Jays a 5-3 halftime lead. As it turned out, the Greyhounds were never closer than two over the final 33 minutes. Wharton pushed the lead to 6-3 early in the third quarter when he one-timed a nifty pass from Tom Palasek past Loyola (9-4) goalie Jake Hagelin from in tight. A Patrick Fanshaw goal for Loyola two minutes later temporarily halted the run, but Wharton blew home a 10-yarder after some nice ball movement 51 seconds later to make it 7-4 and senior Michael Kimmel and Wharton both scored in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter to make it 9-4. Hurst added his second of the game with 7:25 remaining, but Bassett made five saves in the fourth quarter and the Hounds didn t find the back of the net again until Hurst completed his hat trick with 58 seconds remaining to close the scoring. Chris Basler opened the scoring in the game with a nice cut to the crease and finish off a Copper MacDonnell feed from goal line extended, but the Blue Jays led 2-1 less than three minutes later as Palasek and Wharton scored back-to-back goals in a span of 43 seconds. The 2-1 lead held until the opening minute of the second quarter, when John Schiavone scored after a long scrum on the opening faceoff of the period. Kimmel scored on an ally dodge less than a minute later and Hurst forced the 3-3 tie seven minutes after that. That tie lasted until Spaulding s first of the season ignited the game-turning 6-1 run. Bassett s 20 saves are the most by a Johns Hopkins goalie since Michael Gvozden had 20 in the 2008 national championship game against Syracuse. Over the last three games he now has 46 saves while allowing just 19 goals (.708 save percentage). Wharton s five goals, which came on just five shots, matched a career high that he originally set against Hofstra on March 7, The hat trick is the ninth of Wharton s career. Kimmel added two goals and one assist, while Palasek added the one goal and one assist. Hurst s three goals are a career-high, but he was the only Loyola player to register a multi-point game. Hagelin entered the game ranked 10th in the nation in save percentage (.571), but allowed seven goals and posted just three saves in just under 38 minutes of action.
