3 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland lacrosse team opened the Dave Cottle era with what has been the staple of the program for the last few years -- defense. The No. 6 Terps shut out visiting No. 23 Hobart for the first three quarters, building a 9-0 lead, on the way to a 13-6 victory at the Artificial Turf Facility. Sophomore Dan LaMonica led the Terps with five points on two goals and three assists, junior Mike Mollot added three goals and an assist. "I thought we played very well in the first three quarters. Our defense was strong," said Cottle, who joins all previous seven Maryland lacrosse coaches with victorious debuts with the Terps. "I thought our young midfielders did a great job and Brian Carroll really set the tone with his face-offs." On face-offs, senior Brian Carroll won 12 of his 18 draws, including eight of 11 in the first three periods. Junior goalie Danny McCormick, making his first start as a Terp, tallied 14 saves and allowed just three goals before giving way to freshman T.C. Behm with four minutes left in regulation. The win improved Maryland's record to an amazing all-time in season openers, dating back to the start of the program in The Terps have won nine straight openers now. In building the 9-0 lead, Nate Watkins and Dan LaMonica each scored two goals. LaMonica also assisted on three consecutive goals after the Terps went up 1-0 on Watkins first score, just 1:51 into the game. LaMonica fed J.R. Bordley, Matt Brock and Watkins -- for his second -- to make it 4-0 2:05 into the second quarter. After Alex Poole made it 5-0, LaMonica scored consecutive goals bridging the second and third quarters to make it 7-0. Craig Hochstadt and Willy Passavia scored to close the third with a 9-0 Terp advantage. Hobart finally got on the board after taking 15 shots with no success through three quarters as Scott Harvey scored the first of his four goals at the beginning of the fourth period. The Statesmen offense went to work in the fourth, outscoring the Terps, 6-4. But it was too late as Maryland had built an insurmountable lead. In that quarter, Mollot recorded a hat trick with three goals over a span of 7:29. Mike LaMonica also got on the board with a pretty behind-thehead shot to beat Hobart goalie Mike Borsz. COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland men's lacrosse posted its first shutout in 32 years as the Terps blanked Mount St. Mary's, 18-0 at Byrd Stadium. The Terps' last shutout came in a 19-0 whitewash of Duke on April 20, Maryland moved to 2-0, the Mount goes to 0-3. The shutout was the first in all of Division I mens lacrosse since April 24, 2001 as Dartmouth blanked Boston College 12-0, for the only shutout in lacrosse last season. It was a career day for several Terps, led by senior captain Mike Morsell, who posted his first career four-goal game and added three assists for seven points. Morsell's only other career hat trick also came against the Mount in the 2000 meeting. Junior Matt Urlock equaled his career-best with three goals. Sophomore J.R. Bordley posted his first-career multigoal game with a pair as did freshman Andrew Schwartzman. Junior Mike Mollot also tallied twice to give the Terps five players with two or more goals. Five other players scored goals: Mike LaMonica, Nate Watkins, Matt Brock, Sean Leary and Craig Hochstadt. Freshman Dave Matz recorded his first two collegiate points as he assisted on both of Schwartzman's goals. Junior Ryan Moran also posted his first college points with a pair of helpers. "I think we played unselfishly," said coach Dave Cottle. "We got the offense going, scoring a bunch. Defensively, the coaches have gotten the players to do a great job. As long as we keep getting the goalkeeping, we will be alright." The 18-goal margin was the largest since a 21-2 shelling of Radford on April 1, Between the pipes, junior Danny McCormick made four saves before giving way to Matt Rzepkowski and T.C. Behm, who made six saves. The Terps piled up 65 shots, the most since they also had 65 against Providence on Feb. 27, They also had 60 groundballs in each quarter-- the most since scooping up 63 against Delaware on March 15, Mount St. Mary's goalie Tom Dryer made a career-high 28 saves. DURHAM, N.C. -- Freshman Matt Monfett's first career goal came with two seconds remaining in the second overtime period and lifted ninth-ranked Duke to a 9-8 win over sixth-ranked Maryland in ACC men's lacrosse action at a rain-soaked Koskinen Stadium in Durham, N.C. The Blue Devils improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the league while the Terrapins fall to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in conference play. Maryland jumped on top 2-0 early in the first period on goals by Mike LaMonica and Ryan Moran, but Duke responded with two goals from Kevin Brennan in a 50 second span to tie the game at the 5:02 mark. Craig Hochstadt then scored on an assist from Mike Mollot to give the Terrapins a 3-2 lead with 4:13 remaining in the quarter before Duke knotted the game with a shorthanded goal with just under three minutes left. Lieske put Duke ahead with an extra man goal from Kevin Cassese early in the second quarter, but the Terrapins tied the game at 4-4 when Matt Urlock found the back of the net on a pass from Mollot. Lieske gave the Blue Devils a onegoal lead going into halftime with an unassisted score at the 1:11 mark. Moran scored for the Terrapins at the 11:23 mark of the third quarter to tied the game at 5-5 before Brennan pushed Duke back on top less than three minutes later. Maryland responded with three unanswered goals - single scores by Mike LaMonica, Moran and Mollot - to claim an 8-6 advantage on Mollot's goal with 10:39 left in the fourth quarter. Cassese pulled Duke within one on a goal from Brennan, and then tied the game with just eight seconds remaining in the period to force overtime. Duke goalkeeper A.J. Kincel was credited with 17 saves while Maryland's Danny McCormick registered 12 saves. Brennan paced the Duke attack with three goals and two assists while Lieske added three goals and one assist. Maryland was led by Moran's three goals - the first three of his career - while Mollot added one goal and three assists. The final 2:02 of the fourth period and both overtime sessions were played without the benefit of a scoreboard due to weather-induced technical problems. 4 COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's trio of Mike Mollot, Mike LaMonica and Dan LaMonica combined for 11 goals as the No. 7 Terps (3-1) opened up the offense and downed No. 5 Towson (2-1), on a rainy afternoon at Byrd Stadium and before a live television audience on WMAR-TV Channel 2. Mollot finished with a career-high five goals and each LaMonica added three tallies as the Maryland offense blitzed Towson, outshooting the Tigers, The LaMonica brothers Mike (18) and Dan (12) combined to outshoot the entire Towson team, "I really thought our offense worked well," said head coach Dave Cottle. "We had lots of opportunities and were able to spread the ball around and put it in the net a lot." The total of 15 goals represents the most goals Maryland has scored against a top-10 team since the '98 Terps which notched a 19-8 win over No. 1 Loyola, in the NCAA Semifinals on May 23, The win also avenged the Terps' 2001 NCAA quarterfinal loss to the Tigers when Towson knocked the third-seeded Maryland team out of the tournament, on May 20, Mollot added two more assists to finish with seven points, tying his career-high of seven previously accomplished twice before. Dan LaMonica also posted a career high with six points (three goals, three assists). "I scored a lot, but honestly as long as we come away with the win, I'm happy," said Mollot, who posted his sixth career hat trick. "It's about winning and that's what we did today." With the scored tied 6-6 late in the second quarter, Mollot started an 8-2 run as he scored an unassisted goal with 1:49 left in the first half. He scored four of his five goals in the run which bridged the second, third and fourth quarters. After a Nate Watkins' goal 1:50 into the second half, Mollot put the Terps ahead 9-6 off a pass from Alex Poole with 9:54 left in the third quarter. Nine different Terps scored goals as junior Matt Brock led the way with his first career hat trick, finishing it off with the Terps' 16th and final goal. Senior Mike LaMonica did his best to prevent it from being his last game as he recorded a career-high six goals and eight points in the win which lifted the Terps to 9-4 on the season. "If we had lost today, it would've been about us," said Maryland head coach Dave Cottle. "We think we're one of the best six teams in the country. Now, it's up to the NCAA committee to decide. All of our games through April were onepoint games. To win today by over ten goals, that was our goal. We played the way we wanted to play. Again, we feel we are one of the best six teams in this country." Maryland has now won its last two games and has outscored its opponents this season, losing all four games by just one goal -- three in overtime. The 19 goals were the most by the Terps since a 19-3 defeat of Mount St. Mary's on Feb. 27, The Terps broke the game open in the first quarter after falling behind 2-0 on quick goals by the Retrievers Scott Steele and Justin Smith, Maryland coach Dave Cottle called timeout. Maryland subsequently went on to score seven consecutive goals to build an insurmountable 7-2 lead with 10:20 left in the first half. In that run, Dan LaMonica scored a pair of man-up goals -- both off assists from brother Mike. The duo has now combined on nine scoring plays over the last two seasons. Maryland tallied seven goals in the second quarter -- its second most in any quarter this season to lead 11-4 at halftime. The LaMonica brothers had each posted hat tricks in the first half on the way to combining for nine goals in the game. The third quarter was more of the same with the Terps dominating the play. Junior defensive midfielder Brett Harper scored his second career goal and first since his first game as a freshman in 2000 just 2:50 into the third quarter to give Maryland a 12-5 lead. After Justin Smith's third goal of the game for UMBC, Mike LaMonica reeled off three consecutive goals bridging the third and fourth quarters giving his new career of six goals in a game. Ryan Moran scored his third of the game to equal his career high for the third time this season to bring the Terps lead to 16-6 with 12:59 left in the fourth quarter. Watkins scored his second of the game to make it 17-8 as he took a pass from junior Frank Luciano-- for his first career assist and beat UMBC's Tim Flanagan with 6:09 left in the game. Junior Matt Urlock and freshman Andrew Schwartzman closed out the scoring for the Terps in the 19-9 win. Face-off specialist Brian Carroll was sensational on faceoff again, winning a career-high 20 of 26 draws. Over the last two games, Carroll has won 38 of 51 (75 percent). He also corralled six groundballs for the second game in a row. Junior All-American candidate Michael Howley had a career-high eight groundballs as the Terps piled up a advantage in the category.
