First draw is set for 4 p.m. at Unitas Stadium. The game will be streamed live on Lax Sports Network for a nominal fee and live stats are available at caastats.com. JMU had the week off last week, but the last time out on April 23, it suffered a setback at Delaware for its lone CAA loss. UD has won two straight with a most recent win, 16-9, at Drexel last Saturday to clinch the fourth and final seed for the CAA Championship. The 2017 season is presented by O Neill s Grill. BREAKING DOWN THE SERIES This is the 43rd meeting all-time between the Dukes and Blue Hens with JMU leading JMU holds a 4-0 record against UDel on neutral ground, all of which have occurred at the CAA Championship. The Dukes are 5-1 all-time against the Hens at the CAA tournament, with the lone defeat coming back in 1995 at home. JMU has ousted UD in its previous two CAA Championship appearances, claiming a 13-9 win in Williamsburg in 2014 and earning a 10-7 triumph at Delaware in Last time the teams met, the Blue Hens won to hand the Dukes their sole CAA defeat for the second straight season. UD never trailed, as Coley Ricci had a career-high five goals. Becky Gohsler tallied four goals and two assists, and Megan Santoleri added four scores. Delaware used a 5-0 run over 5:27 to mount a 10-4 first-half lead and led by as many as eight, at 13-5, in the second half. Four Dukes tallied multi-goal games, led by Margaret Tucker Fogarty s three goals. HISTORY IN CAA TOURNEY JMU is making its 23rd appearance in the CAA Championship since joining the league in The Dukes are (.717) all-time in the CAA postseason, claiming nine tournament titles, with the most recent coming in 2015 when Delaware hosted. JMU has been either the No. 1 or No. 2 seed now in each of the last eight seasons, including one seeds in 2010, 2016 and The program holds a record of 11-3 when holding the No. 1 seed since the formation of the conference. The Dukes have advanced to the title game in all six of their seven previous appearances as No. 1. JMU is looking to make its fourth straight berth in the CAA championship game and 16th all-time. WARDEN, KLAES-BAWCOMBE REEL IN CAA MAJOR AWARDS For the second straight season, JMU brings home the CAA s top player and coach of the year accolades, as Haley Warden was voted Player of the Year, and Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe was named Coach of the Year. JMU has now won CAA Player of the Year 13 times and in five of the past six seasons, while Klaes- Bawcombe earned her fourth CAA Coach of the Year nod, including her third as coach at JMU. Warden scored 22 goals, to go with seven assists, but her play in the midfield and defensive third makes her the complete player. She led the Dukes with 56 draw controls, 47 ground balls and 40 caused turnovers, ranking in the CAA s top three in all hustle categories. 2 Warden ranks 12th nationally in caused turnovers per game (2.35), as she is one shy of JMU s single season record. She is also third in JMU single-season history in draw controls and tied for 14th in ground balls. Klaes-Bawcombe earned her fourth career CAA Coach of the Year award, and third at JMU. She was first named the CAA s top coach in 2005 at Hofstra, and has earned the laurel in 2010, 2016 and 2017 while at the helm of the Dukes. She guided JMU to JMU s sixth outright CAA regular-season title and the program s 11th overall regular-season crown since the league s formation in SEVEN DUKES ON ALL-CAA TEAMS JMU had seven individual garner All-CAA accolades, led by three First Team members. Earning First Team All-CAA honors were attacker Kristen Gaudian and midfielders Elena Romesburg and Haley Warden. Joining the trio on the Second Team were attacker Katie Kerrigan and defender Rebecca Tooker. Emma Johnson and Maddie McDaniel were also named to the All-Rookie Team. All seven players will return in 2017 and this is the sixth straight season JMU has had at least three players named First Team All-CAA. CAA ONCE AGAIN PREMIER IN RPI James Madison s body of work this season has provided for a top-20 RPI ranking, as it came in at No. 16 in this week s ranking. JMU is one of three CAA schools to hold a top- 20 ranking, while all four CAA tournament teams rank within the top 25. Towson is 15th, Elon is 17th and UDel is 25th. The CAA as a whole ranks fourth in conference RPI as the seven-team league averages a ranking of 33.71, which is close to the Ivy League, which is third with an average ranking of The ACC leads the nation with a 16.5 average RPI ranking from top to bottom, while the Big Ten is second at The Dukes consistently play a top-tier schedule, which includes games against RPI No. 1 North Carolina, No. 2 Maryland and No. 3 Penn State. JMU has a pair of top-20 RPI wins against Elon and Towson. DUKES STRONG COMING OFF BREAK JMU was the only CAA team to not play during the final week of the regular season, but the elongated break hasn t deterred the Dukes from capturing a win off a bye. In the previous three seasons ( ), JMU is 4-0 in its first game coming off a bye. In 2015, JMU claimed a 13-8 triumph against Tech after an 11-day layoff, and also triumphed 13-9 at Delaware in the CAA semis after a 12- day break. In the four games, JMU has scored at least 12 goals while limiting foes to an average of 6.25 goals per outing. CLINCHING NO. 1 FOR CAA TOURNEY For the second straight season, JMU secured the top seed for the CAA Championship in the Drexel road win. The Dukes finished CAA play at 5-1, marking the seventh straight year JMU has only lost one conference game. The Dukes clinched the outright regular-season crown for the sixth time since 1992 and has now won at least a share in 11 seasons. Since the creation of the CAA lacrosse conference, JMU is (.716) during CAA play in the regular season. SCOUTING DELAWARE The Blue Hens enter Friday s matchup with a 9-7 overall record and 4-2 mark in CAA play. Delaware wrapped up the regular season with a 16-9 victory at Drexel to clinch the No. 4 seed. UD is led by All-CAA First Team member Becky Gohsler, who ranks fourth in the league in goals (2.62) and sixth in points (3.31). She is also fourth in draws (2.92), fifth in caused turnovers (2.0) and sixth in ground balls (2.54). The Hens also get strong contribution from All- CAA Second Teamers Coley Ricci, Mary Abram and Taylor Carpentier. UD averages goals per game while leading the CAA with an 8.44 goals against average. Kateri Linville is in her seventh season at the helm, accruing a record. She has led the Blue Hens to now five straight winning seasons. JMU AWAY FROM HOME The Dukes have been solid outside of Harrisonburg, earning a 6-3 record, including a 5-3 mark in true road games. In the nine outings, JMU outscores opponents to 9.89, on average. The Dukes lead the hustle stats, with advantages in draw controls ( ), caused turnovers (88-82) and ground balls ( ). JMU s pressure has been solid, as its clear percentage is 23 points higher than opponents. She is closing in on the single-season record in caused turnovers, as she ranks tied for second with 40. She needs just two more to become the outright record holder. She also ranks third in draw controls (52) and tied for 14th in ground balls (47). For her career, she is seventh all-time in draw controls (124), tied for 11th in caused turnovers (67) and needs just five ground balls to enter the top-20 list. JMU DROPS LONE CAA GAME AT UDEL Delaware led wire-to-wire to hand JMU its only CAA loss in a decision on April 23. The Hens, who used an 8-1 run to bridge the halves, were led by Coley Ricci s five goals. Becky Gohsler and Megan Santoleri each tallied four scores. Margaret Tucker Fogarty led JMU with three goals and an assist while three other Dukes scored twice. It was JMU s second straight season losing at Delaware to mark the team s lone CAA defeat. Halle Duenkel led the defense with a careerhigh four caused turnovers, two draw controls and a ground ball. Haley Warden tallied four draws and three ground balls. JMU opened the game with three straight goals and used a five-goal run late in the half to up the lead to 14-4 before halftime. The Dukes scored the final five goals of the game to extend the margin to double digits. DUKES DOMINATE HOFSTRA Haley Warden scored a career-high six goals, and JMU used three big scoring runs to roll past Hofstra 17-9 on April 14 in Hempstead, N.Y. It was JMU s fourth straight win, as they clinched a spot in the CAA Championship. Warden tied her career high for scoring in the first half alone, notching four goals in a span of less than 11 minutes. She also had six draw controls - one off her career high. Kristen Gaudian scored three goals while adding an assist, and both Hanna Haven and Elena Romesburg scored twice. After conceding the first goal of the game, JMU scored six in a row. Leading 6-4, the Dukes closed the half with five straight to build an 11-4 advantage. The Dukes used another five-goal run to lead by as many as 10 in the second half. In JMU s wins over Elon (14-5) and William & Mary (11-5), she tallied nine caused turnovers six ground balls and six draw controls. In the Elon win, she recorded 13 hustle stats off five draws, four caused turnovers and four ground balls. She followed that up by tying her career high with five caused turnovers, to go with two ground balls and a draw control JMU ROLLS PAST ELON JMU used three big scoring runs and a stout defensive effort to earn a 14-5 win on April 7 against Elon. The Dukes dominated every stat category, outshooting Elon 34-13, including 28-3 in shots on goal. JMU also led in caused turnovers (18-8), draw controls (14-6) and ground balls (22-11). All three starting attackers recorded hat tricks, led by Kristen Gaudian s four goals. GAUDIAN TAKES HOME CAA POTW Junior Kristen Gaudian was honored by the CAA for the first time in her career on April 3, as she was named the conference s Player of the Week following the Towson win. She tied her career high of four goals, which included three in the first half. She added one draw control and a ground ball. It was the first time since April 4, 2016, that a Duke was named CAA Player of the Week, and it is the fifth CAA weekly accolade for JMU in 17. STRONG FINISH IN LOSS TO TERPS JMU outscored No. 1 Maryland in the second half, but the Terrapins used a big run to bridge the halves to hand the Dukes a loss on March 25. Maddie McDaniel scored a career-high four goals, including three during an eight-minute span in the second half. Katie Kerrigan tied her career high with four assists, and Leah Monticello added three points. Haley Warden became the 12th JMU player in history to reach 100 career draw controls, as she won four to up her total to 102. She also tied her career best of four ground balls. Leading 5-2, UM limited JMU to just two goals in nearly 23 minutes while scoring nine goals to up its lead to 13-4 with just over 20 minutes to go. JMU outscored UMD 7-3 in the last 17:24. JMU STUMBLES VERSUS VIRGINIA Despite surging out to a 3-1 lead, JMU managed just three more goals over the final 47:30, falling 9-6 to No. 19 Virginia on March 22. Kelly Reese and Besser Dyson each had three goals and Rachel Vander Kolk made nine saves on JMU s 15 shots on goal. No JMU player was able to score more than a goal, but hustle stats is where JMU saw positives. Rebecca Tooker and Caroline Sdanowich each had a career-high four ground balls. Tooker also had three caused turnovers and two draw controls, while Sdanowich added two caused turnovers. UVa used scoring runs of 3-0 in both the first and second halves to earn the road win. DUKES CONTROL ALL PHASES AT UR Hanna Haven had a career night and JMU controlled every facet of the game to earn a 14-8 win at Richmond on March 15. Haven scored a career-high six points off a career-best four goals and two assists, which matched her single-best total. Elena Romesburg and Haley Warden each had hat tricks. Hannah Jablonski produced a career-high six draws. JMU used a 4-0 run over the final 12 minutes of the first half to take an 8-4 lead at the break. Leading 10-7, the Dukes scored four straight in five-and-a-half minutes to put the game away. 20-GOAL WIN FOR THE DUKES A total of 12 players scored and JMU dominated all phases in a 21-1 win against Longwood on March 3. It was JMU s sixth win all-time by 20 or more goals and was just one goal off the program s win-margin record. It was the first time winning by 20 since a 22-2 victory against American on April 13, CAA HONORS WARDEN & JOHNSON Following the 20-goal win versus Longwood on March 3, Haley Warden was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week and Emma Johnson was tabbed CAA Rookie of the Week. Both players racked up eight hustle stats in the 20-goal win. Warden had four ground balls, two caused turnovers and two draw controls, while Johnson had a career night with four caused turnovers and four ground balls. The Dukes blanked the Lancers in the second half, conceding just one shot over the final 20. WARDEN ON TEWAARATON WATCH LIST Haley Warden was one of 25 women s players selected to the Tewaaraton Award Watch List, which recognizes the top male and female lacrosse players in the NCAA. Last season, Warden was a Second Team All-CAA selection. She led the Dukes in ground balls and was second on the team and third in the CAA in draw controls. This season, she s one of the league leaders in draw controls, ground balls and caused turnovers. COACH SHELLEY SETS WINS RECORD On Feb. 25, Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe became JMU s all-time winningest coach with her 119th win at the helm of the Dukes. She passed JMU Hall of Famer Dee McDonough, who won 118 games in 15 seasons. Now in her 11th season, she has guided JMU to four NCAA Championship appearances, has been named CAA Coach of the Year twice and is a three-time CAA champion. The Dukes have been ranked in nine of her 11 seasons while leading the program. DUKES ROLL IN HOME OPENER Five players scored two or more goals, as JMU cruised to a 15-4 win over High Point on Feb. 25. Maddie McDaniel produced her first career hat trick, while Kristen Gaudian had two goals and two assists. Hanna Haven and Elena Romesburg both had two goals and an assist. Katie Kerrigan also had three helpers. JMU dominated defensively, led by Haley Warden s four caused turnovers and four ground balls. TOOKER NAMED CAA S TOP DEFENDER Following a road win at Virginia Tech and neutral-site win versus UConn, Rebecca Tooker was named CAA Defensive Player of the Week. She tallied six caused turnovers, four draw controls and three ground balls in the sweep. In the two wins, JMU s defense forced its foes into long scoring droughts. The Dukes held VT without a goal for 19:08 in the second half, and UConn went spans of 21 and 17 minutes without scoring. DUKES BEAT UCONN AT US LAX COMPLEX In the first NCAA women s lacrosse game at the new US Lacrosse Complex, JMU held off UConn s late rally for an win on Feb. 19. JMU led 11-6 before the Huskies scored four straight over the final four minutes. In a lastditch effort to force overtime, UConn s shot with two seconds left went just wide of the cage. Elena Romesburg was the all-round best player on the field, producing two goals, one assist, five ground balls, two draw controls and a caused turnover. 4

5 DEFENSE POWERS DUKES AT TECH JMU overcame a deficit, scoring four straight goals and holding Virginia Tech without a score for over 19 minutes in a 9-6 triumph on Feb. 15. Hanna Haven had a career-high five points off three goals and two assists, while Elena Romesburg had three goals and an assist. Defensively, Rebecca Tooker had four caused turnovers, and Corinne Schmidt tallied two caused turnovers and three ground balls. Haley Warden won seven draw controls, and Romesburg added three draws and four ground balls. DUKES ROLL MICHIGAN FOR 1ST WIN Three Dukes recorded hat tricks, as JMU rolled to an 18-6 victory at Michigan on Feb. 11. Eight Dukes scored, led by a career-high six points of three goals and three assists from Katie Kerrigan. Kristen Gaudian netted a gamebest four goals, while Hanna Haven turned in her first three-goal outing. Emily Poelma made eight stops between the pipes for her first career win. Leading 3-2, JMU scored four straight to claim a 7-3 lead. After a Michigan goal, the Dukes closed the half with four more to go up HALL OF FAMERS MEET IN ANN ARBOR JMU s game in Ann Arbor featured a pair of JMU Hall of Famers with JMU Head Coach Shelley Klaes-Bawcombe and Michigan Head Coach Jen Ulehla. Klaes-Bawcombe played for Ulehla in the mid- 90 s, winning the CAA in 1997 and making a pair of NCAA Tournament appearances. Ulehla coached JMU to its lone Final Four appearance in 2000, tallying a overall record from 1995 until Klaes-Bawcombe was enshrined in the JMU Hall of Fame in 2011, while Ulehla followed her in the 2013 class. JMU TAKES #1 CAROLINA TO THE LIMIT JMU led 8-5 in the first half before a surge to bridge the halves lifted UNC to a win. Down 14-9, JMU mounted a comeback, coming to within a goal at with under six minutes left. UNC added insurance and neither team scored in the final five minutes. Kristen Gaudian and Margaret Tucker Fogarty both scored four goals. Haley Warden and Hanna Haven each had four points (2g, 2a). Emily Poelma made a career-best 16 saves, which was the most stops dating back to the start of the 2009 season. The 14 goals were the most ever by JMU in the UNC series. DUENKEL NAMED CAA S TOP ROOKIE In her first career game, Halle Duenkel recorded two goals within the first 15 minutes at No. 1 North Carolina. For her efforts, she was named CAA Rookie of the Week. It was the first time since 2015 that a JMU player earned the league s Rookie of the Week laurel. DUKES PICKED SECOND IN CAA JMU was predicted in a vote by the head coaches to finish second in the seven-team Colonial Athletic Association. The Dukes won a share of the regular-season title last season and advanced to the CAA title game before receiving an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship. Madison finished 2016 with a overall record and 5-1 mark in the CAA. The Dukes return four starters, including Preseason All-American Haley Warden. Warden, along with Leah Monticello, Rebecca Tooker and Elena Romesburg, were all recognized on the Preseason All-CAA Team.
